I was sooo excited to finally see Book 6 in the fantastic Breakthrough series. This review is more for me than for you, because unless you have the earlier books you won’t follow this one. I’ve read the previous 5 and loved this series so much because, unlike a lot of the dark stuff I read, this is filled with good people and good intentions and hope.
In the previous 5 books: computers have been able to develop translations between human (English) and dolphin clicks and whistles, the team has discovered evidence and artefacts of alien visitations to earth, also discovered a strange alien substance which has amazing regenerative powers, they can now also speak to gorillas, have discovered vaults of alien seed banks. Now they are trying to decipher the controls of an alien spaceship on the sea floor. But it’s not really about aliens. Are you lost yet, I thought so.
Anyway these books are so much fun - part sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, heavy on the adventure (a la Matthew Reilly), with a little romance thrown in. But this is not fluff, the dangers are many and the science sounds so plausible. For my own info. In this book they find another part of the alien ship in Ethiopia, Li Na stays behind, Clay proposes to Alison, Neely Lawton has worked out why some people can take the DNA changes of the wonderful liquid while most can’t. Sally has given birth to a male (dolphin) calf and Alison has surmised that the dolphins want human help in deciphering the alien craft. I have no idea what will be next but I will certainly be reading it.

Michael C. Grumley has taken series readers on quite the adventure, positing much in the realm of science, sci fi, and even evolutionary beliefs. In what started as an attempt to bridge the communicative gap between humans and dolphins, Grumley has used the series to connect on a deeper level with where it all began and what influences may have been present, as well as how human evolution may have included species never thought part of the mix. With the IMIS team still using a cloak of secrecy, one of the senior members of the US administration is killed, perhaps for what he knows. John Clay and Steve Caesare are asked to look into it, only to discover that someone has been working to develop a powerful and unstoppable force that could make America more of a superpower. While Alison Shaw continues to work with her dolphins, she learns that they have more of a communicative interest than first imagined, about a vast array of topics and in much depth. When news that the next piece of the evolutionary puzzle exists in Europe, the team travels there, only to discover that it is much more complicated than at first glance. Another stellar piece of fiction with hidden truths the reader will have to decipher for themselves. Grumley is amazing and makes it all come together seamlessly. Series fans will love this newest instalment, though I would caution no one to use this as a starting point, as they will be completely flummoxed.
The fact that the IMIS team has been able to keep their missions and abilities to speak with other species completely secret is surely baffling to many. Through the use of a complex computer program, speaking to dolphins and, more recently, gorillas, has helped reveal some of the evolutionary truths that humans had yet to realise. However, when a senior official in the US Government is murdered, there are concerns that the truth may have leaked out and things could go sideways. It will be up to former Navy SEALS John Clay and Steve Caesare to get to the bottom of it all.
After following a few leads, it would appear that someone has been using some of the revelations and technological discoveries to create a super soldier, one who can not only withstand a great deal of injury, but also morph its DNA to better adapt to any situation. While the early tests have not been entirely successful, there is one out there, seeking some form of retribution on those who did them wrong.
All the while, marine biologist Alison Shaw continues to work with her dolphins, Dirk and Sally, as well as many others, trying to learn more about their intelligence and the evidence of an alien presence over the past millennia, leaving clues to the originis of Earth and species evolution. Shaw, having seen the magic of the life-enhancing substance the aliens left behind, seeks to use her connection with the dolphins to understand the narrative they offer, as she crafts a better understanding of human existence and where things are meant to go.
Sally and Dirk appear to have a larger interest, seeking to interact with Li Na, a Chinese teenager who was given an injection of the alien substance and whose abilities seem heightened. The curiosity to seek communion with Li Na has Alison wondering what her dolphins know or wish to understand. Li Na herself has been showing some odd premonitions, things that show a cognitive connection to other species that is, as yet, completely misunderstood by the scientific community.
After Clay and Caesare return from their mission, they are told that the next piece of the alien narrative lies in a small European city, one that houses a relic that could help explain the evolutionary story. Travelling first to France and then to the African continent, Clay leads a team to uncover some old religious and historical artifacts, only to become more confused along the way. While the truth is out there, it is certainly not in plain sight. With moments of intense adventure and others of contemplation, this is another piece in Michael C. Grumley’s series that will have readers wondering and demanding more. The final novel in the series (as I was led to believe)? One can hope not, as there is much yet to be understood!
Michael C. Grumley keeps the reader on the edge of their seat while crafting a collection of detailed novels where complex plots are the only thing that can be assured. The simple idea of inter-species communication has ballooned into something much more complicated, yet also highly intriguing for those who are patient and can handle a little science fiction with their thrills. This is yet another book that pushes the limits of the reader’s imagination, weaving together some portions that may be a tad fanciful with a great deal of history and science to keep the mind spinning. The narrative is ever-evolving and advancing, which adds another spark to the series and keeps me coming back for more. Keeping track of everything may be a little much for the reader seeking a superficial read, but those who want adventure and to think as they flip pages, this is a series perfectly catered to your desires.
Grumley has does a wonderful job in developing his key characters throughout the series, adding depth to their personalities, as well as roles. There is a great deal of development as it relates to the larger narrative and where each character fits, but the personal connections between those who grace the pages of the book are not forgotten. Friendships, romance, and even some deeper banter create a wonderful contrast to the struggle for understanding of the larger human evolution theme that the series presents. Grumley has found the perfect balance and those readers who like to enjoy their characters will find the author has not skimped when it comes to that part of the series advancement.
Rather than focusing on secondary characters here, I thought I would mention that Grumley has been able to effectively push history, science, and philosophical thought in the novel, which has also been present in the entire series. The reader cannot sit idly by, flipping pages, and hope to absorb all that the book has to offer. There is a strong ‘active reading’ expectation, though the benefits pay off exponentially for those who invest themselves. While not written in a highly technical manner, there is a lot to digest and comprehend, pulling on threads from past plots and novels. The story is ever-advancing, but requires acute attention to detail to understand things properly. Fair warning to readers (though, by this point, one should have read the previous five novels to understand 99% of what I have written).
Grumley has ensured that the narrative advances continually for those who seek action and thrills in their reading experience, peppering in the science and history needed to illicit some ‘aha’ moments. The strong characters continue to reveal themselves in new and exciting ways, but do not impede the larger narrative as it relates to science, technology, or evolution. While there are some eye-rolling moments, I was able to set those aside and completely lose myself in the writing, which never leaves the reader feeling less than enthused by what is presented. Puritanical readers may want to stay away, as Grumley has created a more... realistic presentation of dialogue, which does include the odd naughty word. This is a strong series and keeps the reader thinking, begging to better understand where we (humans) came from and what connection we have with other species on more than a superficial level.
Kudos, Mr. Grumley, for another stunning read. While rumours that this was the final novel made it to me, I am prepared to retract that statement, as much remains unsolved! I cannot wait to see what you have to say next.

Not his best
I looked forward to reading this book. I loved the first five installments, but “Echo” fell well short of his usual excellence. He had an interesting take on the Ark of the Covenant, but the forays to France and Ethiopia were less than believable and the dramatic rescue by characters suddenly and miraculously appearing for the first time in the book (although not the series) was too far-fetched. The “super-soldier” plot line was interesting but did not add much to the story. Li Na not getting on the helicopter was poorly explained as was Ali’s revelation for how she concluded the dolphins were prescient. I liked that several references to the ongoing pandemic were made. Sadly, the story floundered more than it advanced.

And so it ends...or does it?
This is supposed to be the end of the series, but it doesn’t feel anything like an ending. This book, this series, combines science, technology, politics, ecology, history and discovery, using relatable characters that quickly become like family. The writing is tight and cohesive, giving all the details you want without drowning you in them. I warn you, you won’t be able to put the books down once you start!

If only this could be
Story continues to unfold to a reality that I would love to believe possible. The question regarding dolfin intelligence is without a doubt true and continues to mystify Experimental Psychologists, Aquatic Biologists, Neurologists, and just guys like me. Astounding
As with all the breakthrough series books I could not put it down. I waited over a year for this one to come out, definitely worth the wait. Now I just don't want the series to end but all good things as they say.
Mr. Grumley is simply amazing.

I have read all 6 books of the Breakthrough series the last being Echo. The entire Breakthrough series provides a refreshing science based science fiction read. The science is accurate and believably extended into the realm of science fiction. The character development throughout the series is complete and compelling allowing one to feel that they really know and understand the motivations of the various characters. Michael Grumley, the author, has done an outstanding job of developing vivid images and setting the scene for each chapter. you can literally transport yourself into the scene and sense the adventure and/or danger. The action of all the books in the Breakthrough series is fast and furious making it very difficult to put the books down. Echo is outstanding in this series. I highly recommend it.

Good finish to the series. Binged the series. Going through them so soon after one another made them possibly feel a little repetitive, but I would certainly read them again!

Man Smart, Dolphin Smarter, The Adventure Continues.
Sixth book I've read in this exciting series of interspecies communication and interstellar visitors. Grumley has done an excellent job of moving the megastory forward as it careens around the world from talking dolphins to crashed spaceships to international tensions rising as news of startling new discoveries slowly but inevitably leaks out into the world. It's a juggling act that the author handles with aplomb. An enjoyable read with great characters, believable science, and action that never lets up.

This is the last book of the Breakthrough series and is beautifully written as are all the others in this series. This one concerns Echoes from the past, the present and future. It illustrates how all living creatures on this planet are connected and how human actions either hurt or help our brothers and sisters in whatever form they are found. The characters are all present from the other books, and by now, we know them very well. They are the good guys doing research for the betterment of mankind as well as our animal friends. Echolocation is discussed which is a process used by Dolphins, bats and blind humans for a few examples. Prepare to be amazed as the story continues to unfold and comes to an ending. Though this is the last book in the Breakthrough series, it is not the last we will see of the characters we've met and come to love and respect. You won't want to miss this one and if you've not read the others in this series, you're missing the special treats they all are. Author does extensive research about his subjects, so you will learn much from his books and enjoy them thoroughly in the process. Happy Reading!

7/2021 I read the first of the six book series in 2018. It was a fun beach read, complete with interesting science ideas, intrigue, and alien encounters. This month I read the other five books in the series. The first four were fun. There was exciting science ideas (perhaps a bit too much crammed into the story), lots of intrigue (grew a bit formulaic as the series progressed), and developing relationships with aliens. However, the plot of book 5 with the CIA being the bad characters was upsetting, and the lack of a strong conclusion or satisfying revelations in book 6 was frustrating. To end book 5 with a big reveal about the aliens and then to not mention the situation until the very end of book 6 was crazy. All in all, the books kept me entertained during a time I needed some fast reads, but my frustration with the story line towards the end would keep me from recommending them to others.

I am telling all my friends about this series! I cannot begin to describe how much I enjoyed and appreciated Michael C. Grumley’s excellent Breakthrough book series and Echo was just as good as all the others. The books should be made into a movie or series! I agree with previous reviewers that it is sad to see it end, but as one reviewer mentioned, trust Michael that this is the way it should be. Descriptive words found in other reviews that I agree with are: thought provoking, well written, includes amazing information on history, politics, religion, and man’s attempt to manipulate our world. What stands out the most is Mr. Grumley’s concern for our planet, hope of our future, and the wisdom he has to share with us. Bless you Michael!

After reading ECHO, it reminded me why I loved the BREAKTHROUGH series. After BREAKTHROUGH, I was totally all in for anything Michael C. Grumley wrote. His knowledge of dolphins blew me away. He writes with empathy for these beautiful animals, and how they become to interact with humans. I'd read all of the series, and was so pleased to see there was another coming out. I read ECHO in less than 24 hours, there was no way I was putting it down! Any fan of his will be will laugh, cry, sit in awe of how Grumley weaves this tale. I recommend it to any reader as a 'can't put down book'. I know you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

It has been two years since the last Breakthrough story, but the wait was worth it. Most of the previous characters are back with interesting new twists as they hunt for the Lost Arc and face other challenges. I read it in one sitting. Could not put it down.
But we need to know the rest of the story. Please write faster. I am 79 years old. I need more of these books while I can still read.

Hands down one of my all-time favorites. I learn something(s) from each book in this series. It has everything! Action, suspense, sci fi and dolphins! Breakthrough has some of the best writing and cohesive sub-plots I have ever read. Michael Grumley is magnificent at spinning tales that you never want to end. I really hope there are more Breakthrough stories.

Echo Review
This was my least favorite book in this series. Too much of it seemed like it was going nowhere and when it got there you wondered why. What they found on the small island left me wondering how it fit and no one seemed to know what it was or what to do with it. If it really was what they were looking for, they seemed to low play it.

Wonderful!
As with every book in this series I have thoroughly enjoyed this latest instalment, the author weaves a a fabulous main storyline peppered with so many side plots it's a fast moving ride from start to finish.
The characters I have grown quite fond of throughout the series all popped up which helps the overall feel of the story from the first book to the present one.
The complexity of detail in this authors work always makes me think! Which is a great skill as I like clever books, words that make me as a reader think about what I am reading not just float along for the entirety lol

Stunning
Michael Grumley is hands down one of the best authors out there. This amazing series has been incredible. The characters are almost like family because he has the rare ability to bring the cast to life. I've devoured his books solely on his concise, crisp telling of the story. I know this is supposed to be the end of the series, but there is so much left to be told. The dolphins, Dirk, Sally, and new baby need to have their story expanded. Allison and John, Steve and Neely, Li Na, the explanation of the writings on the ship, these subjects need some further telling. Also, the ending when Director Andrew Hayes was told he was relieved of duty made my jaw drop. What the neck was that all about.
So, I'm sorry Michael but you need to get writing yesterday to put my mind at rest. Just a small suggestion, if you want to read one of the best authors around, get the first book, read it and I guarantee you'll be getting all 6 in the series. Would I recommend Michael Grumley, oh most definitely.

I know this is supposed to be the end of the series, but there is so much left to be told. The dolphins, Dirk, Sally, and new baby need to have their story expanded. Allison and John, Steve and Neely, Li Na, the explanation of the writings on the ship, these subjects need some further telling. Also, the ending when Director Andrew Hayes was told he was relieved of duty made my jaw drop. What the neck was that all about.
So, I'm sorry Michael but you need to get writing yesterday to put my mind at rest. Just a small suggestion, if you want to read one of the best authors around, get the first book, read it and I guarantee you'll be getting all 6 in the series. Would I recommend Michael Grumley, oh most definitely.

Fantastic!
What an exciting, thrilling ride this final book was. The entire series was spellbinding. Grumley is a talented author. I loved the characters in these stories both human and animal. The science is extremely interesting as well. Every book in this series was enjoyable. That is quite an accomplishment.

Endings bring new beginnings
Echo continues the astounding story of humans learning what other living things have known for ages. Through selfless devotion to their causes, the crew and their protectors are shown to be honest human beings with as many flaws as the rest of us. Author Brimley has a unique grasp and skill illustrating recognizable people in unusual circumstances. He also continues the important idea of deep friendship between diverse species. It's a very timely gift he gives his readers lately. The ending brings some stories to a happy conclusion while others have far yet to go.

It is a pleasure to leave a response to the wonderful book and series. It has been awhile since a book has been so thought provoking and enjoyable. The numerous story threads and group of solid characters kept me intrigued on every page. I learned things about new subjects and locals. The connection of the story threads to each other was creative and build a solid adventure played out in locations around the world. Treat yourself to this author's inventive story telling. What a treat!

For the entire series, I give 5 stars. This series has been a fun and entertaining read. There were moments I would get lost in some of the technology stuff but really enjoyed getting to know all the characters and especially the dolphins and primates.
For Echo, I felt like something was missing. I have physical copies of all 6 books and can see myself rereading again (maybe).

Guess what echo means.
I definitely liked reading this book, but I did have some problems with it. For instance, this is just an interlude in a serial. It is so long in coming, I lose a bit of what happened before. It does not conclude. The name comes from the last ten pages or so of the book, and seems a minor issue to this book even though it might become a major issue later. The story was too short. I have no idea how the cavalry from Rwanda got to Ethiopia in such a timely fashion no matter all the clues about what was happening in Rwanda. Also we're exposed to two completely different stories and left hanging as to a third. Story two didn't finish either. Story one, our supporters are being killed one by one. The team sets out to stop the killings. Success (I think). Story two, there's a correlation in some historical notes that indicate a piece of the alien starship power plant may be something they can find. They go in search, and get into a lot of trouble with backstabbing government officials, and secret religious groups. They escape by the hair of their teeth, but one gets left behind (story three). They are now in possession of secret knowledge, but their treasure hunt did not come back with the power plant. Oh, a vocabulary lesson. It's unkempt not unkept. Mr. Grumley writes a highly interesting and entertaining tale, but one is best served by reading the volumes before this one before tackling this volume, and Mr Grumley would be better served making his books more integrally complete. Buying this book is committing oneself to the next volume in sequence, since this volume merely dropped hints of further things needing investigation in the future. That's good enough for your fans (I believe I am one), but not for others.

Echo was disappointing. Having read all but the second book in this series, I had become a fan. This story was disjointed from the start devoting much of the first half to a subplot that didn't have much, if anything, to do with the ongoing saga to understand the alien technology premise of all these books. The second half rambled on and on in a world wide search instigated by computer genius Will Borger's AI software. The team is rescued from certain death by friends who had no rational reason for being in the vicinity. At the conclusion of that contrived adventure, the Chinese teenager central to finding the artifact they sought decides she will forge out on her own in a country she has no connection with. The dolphins who are at the core of all the other stories have little to do in this one beyond having a baby. After reading Echo, I'll not be waiting with bated breath for the next installment in this series.

Is this series ever going to end?
I think the author has an interesting concept for his series, BUT he has WAY too many things going on in one series. The dolphins are talked about a lot in every book. DeeAnn and the primates were discussed a lot in the second book but their story has gotten lost along the way. There was a teaser for Palin and his world’s story in Mosaic, but that hasn’t gone anywhere yet. We still haven’t learned where the elephants come in. There are now the parts of the alien ship to be found and either returned or who knows where that will go. Li Na is now floating in the wind. And now we have Sally and Dirks baby.
A new plot line is brought into the story in almost every book, while others seem to get lost or forgotten. This could be the never ending series, but with that being said, the author takes a long time to put a new book out. Who knows when we’ll learn how this series ends.

This thrilling, captivating, and complex story is absolutely brilliant and thought-provoking. There is so much to this story from interspecies communication with Dolphins, Monkeys, and Gorillas and understanding their intelligence, the search to understand the workings of an alien ship, to danger, mystery, and a beautiful romance. This story is so well written, and the research on history and cultures mentioned in this story was absolutely outstanding. I have followed this amazing series from the beginning and this author's amazing work just blows me away. It really leaves you with the feeling that we are not alone and there is so much more to learn about our planet. I can not wait to see where this series takes us next. I highly recommend this book and all this author's fantastic work.

The entire "Breakthrough" Series is a thoroughly enjoyable read!
Original, exciting, compelling, and extremely well-researched, this is a delightful adventure for any reader! The characters are well developed and the dolphins are marvelous! The plot is compelling and definitely a page-turner – I found it difficult it fit in some sleep while reading!
I am especially impressed by the breadth and detail of research! Fascinating insights into everything from military details to the latest in biology, genetics, palaeontology, archaeology, history, world geography/culture/politics… I definitely felt it was “real” and was enthralled to travel the world with the characters!
This terrific series has everything a young reader could wish for in page-turning adventure, and everything an extremely jaded and pedantic bibliophile such as myself could hope for!

It's been a fascinating ride...
Through the whole series. If you've arrived at this point with me and have read the whole series then you know what I mean. If you are reading this review wondering what it's about, whether you should begin the trip, think no more. Go back to Breakthrough and start from the first book. this is scfi at its finest. Good writing, not an amateurish attempt at learning to put down ideas and thoughts into coherent sentences into a well written story. A finely crafted story at that, well researched and based on real science woven into the fiction.
From the first scenes of communication between different species to the political intrigue influencing scientific research we're taken on a wild and fascinating ride virtually around the whole world and then some. I can't recommend this series enough and hope that there is more.
