The fight for alliance has just begun.

Scarred and shaken by months of imprisonment, Princess Cistine Novacek takes the newest battlefield before her: Valgard's treacherous political landscape. With her cabal at her side, she faces the daunting task of healing from her trauma and securing the treaty her kingdom needs...while in the shadows, sinister threats arise.

A kingdom away, Ashe and Maleck walk a tenuous line. It's dangerous enough convincing Mahasar's Mad King of a treaty that doesn't yet exist - harder still while battling their own specters and the disastrous attraction growing between them. The future of both kingdoms rests in the hands of two warriors who were once sworn enemies; if they can't learn to be something more, together and apart, war may come before Cistine fulfills her mission.

Alliances shift. Old and new enemies storm the gates. Healing comes at a cost. And with their own fears threatening everything they hold sacred, the cabal must learn how to trust one another with an unshakable faith.

Nothing less will survive the coming storm.

This is too hard to review but I promise I will soon!

*takes a few minutes to sulk*
Okay, I will try...

Let's start this with saying I have very mixed feelings, and 99% of them because of very personal reasons that are not of Renee's making (I didn't want to say fault but couldn't find the right word either). Finishing this book's got me thinking about the way we review books, about what matters, and about how easy it is to focus on the negatives when we find something we don't like.. Or maybe something we're not ready for. Or that is not what we expected.

This book is great. It is, in some ways, a perfect continuation of a saga that gripped my heart in a tight fist from the moment I stepped into this universe.
A lot of the things I've loved so far are still here, but still... There's something so different in this book. And I think I might have understood this a bit when I read the acknowledgements at the end. For me, this book was in a parallel universe only one choice away from the original. I don't know if that makes sense, but I feel like there was one tiny little thing here that wasn't the story I was reading before, and that threw me off a little.

That being said, I also know this book is everyone's favorite in the saga, so maybe I'm biased because of all the tropes used here that I'm not fond of. So, read this knowing that this is probably a very very biased review😂

I did love the way trauma was dealt with, the way the characters grew and how the story seemed to take on so many different paths, making this story so much... Deeper. (words are not my friends today).
But, at the same time, having so many povs and so many different stories going on at the same time had me a little lost. I lost my eagerness between pages that took me from one end of the kingdom to the other. Lost myself a little because I think I've read way too many book, and managed to guess so many of the plot twists before they happened (was still surprised by a few, which was great!)

I think what got me feeling all weird was the love mostly. I don't know if it is because it wasn't what I expected or because all the relationships seemed similar in many ways. Every character in this book is so unique, so interesting, so full of depth and intricate personalities.. Yet when it came to them being in love, one part of me felt like it was all too similar. Also, don't get me started with founding "the one", I have a very personal issue against this hahaha. But hey, this is me being super biased again because I do kind of hate it when everyone ends ups with a partner. There, I said it! I'm a sour bitch that hates it when everyone ends up in a couple😂 and I think I'm feeling nostalgic over the found family because I liked them better when they were all single... Hahaha. There. Roast me 😂

If you're normal and love love and relationships, you'll love this book. If you're in the 1% like me and want to SPOILER ALERT *gag when you read marriage proposals* then this book might not be your fave of the saga either xD (I will hate it every single time, its not about how it's written haha)

Anyway, sorry for such a long weird half rant half praise review.

I can't wait for book 5, because there will be war and blood and less love (? Hahahaha Let's go to waaaarrrrr🙌🏻

(I know, I'm not always the cute girl you though I was)

There are no words to describe just how much I love and adore this book! I was lucky to be an advanced reader for LIGHTFALL, and yet my heart and mind still think about this beautiful story constantly.

After the heart-wrenching struggles of Nightwing, most of the cabal return to Stornhaz after years of exile, while Ashe and Maleck run off to help Cistine's father with the imminent danger with the southern kingdom. They attempt to bring wrongs to justice, are forced to face their pasts, and struggle to accept what their future may look like as the book goes on. There are battles, romance, twists and turns. Just when you think you have a handle on the plot, Dugan throws a plot twist to constantly keep you on your toes.

Besides a much anticipated romance FINALLY coming to pass (SERIOUSLY MY HEART WAS FULL WITH MY FAVORITE OTP!!), the standout part of LIGHTFALL has to be all of the characters internal journeys. This book talks about so many important issues that aren't always discussed in the fantasy genre: trauma recovery, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, PTSD, and the dark struggle to overcome it all. We watched these characters go through so much, and to now be a part of the recovery is a journey that is relatable, beautiful and inspiring!

A lush, heart-gripping continuation of THE STARCHASER SAGA, full of engaging character growth, intoxicating romance, and unforgettable conflict at every turn. LIGHTFALL will remind you that no matter how far you fall, you have the strength to pull yourself back to happiness if you are willing to fight for it.

Where do I even start with this book?

Lightfall is everything I've ever wanted in a book. It's a turning point in the Starchaser saga in so many ways, but first and foremost, it feels like the book where Cistine truly comes into her own. She's been growing and changing throughout every book in the series, but Lightfall made me root for her like nothing else. Is it normal to be proud of a fictional character? I don't really care if it's not, because I was so proud of Cistine in this book. Renee does a brilliant job of something so few fantasy authors bother to do: she doesn't fast-forward through the trauma Cistine or the other POV characters have been through. We're allowed to spend time watching Cistine and Thorne struggle, watching them work through their separate and shared traumas together and individually, and it's so much more emotionally satisfying than if it had been glazed over and hurried along. And while Tatiana's arc isn't as focused on those themes, it's always a delight getting to spend time with my favorite inventor's daughter and her troublemaker raven-taming husband.

But while I adore every single facet of this book, there's one arc in particular that felt like a beam shone right on my heart: Asheila Kovar's arc.

I was reading Lightfall during one of the darkest times in my life, and Asheila Kovar’s pain sang to me in a way I can’t really describe. It felt, and sometimes still feels, like a mirror held up to my heart. And watching her come back from what she thought were unredeemable mistakes was a comfort and an inspiration I desperately needed then and still need now. As much as I identify with Cistine, being a softy myself, Ashe means more to me as a character than I could ever say. She inspires me to pick myself up after every “fight,” to stare my mistakes and failings in the face and whisper “I’m not afraid of you.” She inspires me to keep going even when everything in me is screaming to give up, that I can’t become any better than what I am. When I started this series, I needed a princess who could save the world with her gentleness, and while I still need that, by the time I hit Lightfall, I needed a beast-slayer and rain-dancer, someone who made herself Lady of the hive that tried to break her, someone who could feel her weakness and her cowardice and still call herself Fearless. Someone who was broken and became unbreakable. Someone who could look into a future that seemed hopeless and say no, I’m going to form this into something new. Asheila Kovar is my favorite fictional character of all time, full stop, bar none. This is a story of coming back from unbearable lows and forgiving yourself for falling that far in the first place, and EVERYONE needs to read it.

Also my husband Maleck actually talks a lot in this one and my other husband Sander shows up often and my other other husband gets briefly introduced so like. I'm super biased toward this one <3

I had the extraordinary privilege of beta reading this book and I've read it several more times since!

In many ways, writing LIGHTFALL was my greatest triumph. It was SUCH an overhaul from first to second draft in ways I wasn’t originally sure I could manage. And it required more than a year of reflection, healing, and meeting the right people to bring out the heart of what this book was meant to be.

I'm so very proud of this one. ♥️

Oh my heart. So much happened in this book and I'm still reeling from the impact of it all. I highlighted so many beautiful quotes, took note of telling plot points...but I'm currently in my feels processing. SO I'll get back you you all with my review...

...for now all I can say is. READ THIS SERIES. It will hurt your heart but I KNOW my heart is still better off, having read it...thus far. I'm going to have to build a small fortress around my heart and have augments at my disposal when I approach book 5. Which I simultaneously want immediately and don't think I can ever prepare for...

Review:
I was given the privilege of an advance copy for a review but all opinions are my own.

“When I look at you ______ _____, I do not see a warrior. I see a tide-turner and fate-changer, a woman who could rewrite the paths of the stars if she chose. And I would like to be part of your choices, because a woman like that is someone I can entrust my wings to.”

You will never guess whom this quote is about nor whom the conversation is between. You just WILL NOT. And when you reach this quote your heart will swell, your eyes will fill and you will experience a renewed faith in all things hopeful and fantastical. ...but...I get ahead of myself.

Allow me to rewind: We find our beloved heroines and heroes on the precipice of a new adventure. Albeit an adventure that is a mixture of politics, intrigue and...healing. Going into this book I truly wondered: how will our cabal recover from what they have been through? They have been driven to the precipice of breaking time and time again. They have not broken, but oh have they come so very close.

“I don’t hate this kingdom, nor do I need to know its heart to know its worth. Only yours.”

Ashe has quite the journey ahead of her...I’m afraid to spoil anything because it it a dark, messy path that you need to walk with her to truly appreciate the depth to which she will crawl. She is struggling with her demons and with her self-worth. We see her set forth with our beloved Mal...and the development in their relationship...let me tell you is a whole lot of up arrows, side arrows, spiraling down arrows and then...a golden arrow finally finds its mark. But that’s all I’m going to say about THAT. (Oh and Mal is perfection and I love him and he has some of the BEST quotes and the end) The takeaway is: they’re off to help Cistine stave off King Jad’s menacing presence on the southern border and they’ll need all their cunning, strength and also vulnerabilities to do this. They encounter friendly faces, treacherous scoundrels and VERY unexpected allies. And I LOVED the tension-filled relationship Ashe has with King Cyril. Complicated, strenuous and yet…

“The beat of their blades pounded out the imperfections of her sorrow, fear, and anger like a hammer on new steel.”

Our dear Cistine. Is suffering. And this is where the brilliance of one R. Dugan comes in...we see Cistine floundering, not sleeping. Trying to work out her trauma on the practice grounds one lunge, one feint, one pounding of her fists at a time. But, it is wearing her down and she is stuck in a dark place. As are many of the cabal. They’re all still reeling from the events of the previous book and all are coping in ways they know how. With the impending trials and events tethering they are still being tested and and still fighting the good fight.

“Change precipitated by pressure can’t withstand the storm. I’ve learned this the most difficult way.” Mira tapped a finger over her heart. “Change begins when we choose light over whatever darkness hunts us. I’ve had to rise from my share of shadows, not because anyone begged me to, but because I grew tired of living in the pit. Are you tired, Cistine? Are you ready to rise?”

What I particularly loved about this book, however, was the introduction of a counselor-Mirasseh or Mira. Cistine is developing her abilities but encountering barriers within herself to fully embrace them. She starts to speak with Mira, as do other characters, and THIS is something I want to see more of in Fantasy! I highlighted SO many quotes from her discussions with Mira, and other character. So many reflective, thoughtful observations. For the characters’ benefits but also for our own, ultimately, as readers. Mira’s words were both a balm and a strengthening tool. She soothed and steeled the characters, and us, for what was yet to come. For, boy oh boy, do they have a lot thrown at them.

“I wanted everything I have now so badly, the treaties, this chance…” Her gaze flicked to him, a silent conclusion that that sent his stomach into somersaults: you. “But I can’t enjoy any of it with all this chaos tangled inside me.”

The trial is the ever-present, hovering dark cloud throughout the book. Progress is made only to have a wrench thrown in the whole carefully crafted machinery that is their case against Saltator. Evil incarnate. (I’m not biased). Members of the cabal steel themselves to face him in court and they are all tested with the stunts he pulls, manipulations he spins and lies he sows. He’s a masterful villain...and I hate him so much. I hate how he made our characters feel so small. I hate that he infiltrated their thoughts, left scars on their bodies and doubts in their minds. Our characters have been embattled on so many fronts...yet they still keep battling. This cabal has been through so much but they always find their way back to one another. And even manage to grow a bit in numbers and allies...

“They were a strange entourage: five warriors, a Tribune and one of his twenty-seven lovers, a young girl, and a princess in armor, all led by a wolf. The only held silence in common on the way to the ceremony where Thorne would finally accept the power to change injustice, cruelty, and imbalance in Valgard.”

What I love about this book in no particular order: Mental health advocacy!! People of all different genders, sizes, races, abilities, traumas, ages! MAGIC. Surprises (good and bad). Heart gripping action sequences. Heart-breaking, difficult scenes. GROWTH. So much character growth. So many moments that made me so proud! Tati and uncovering the truth, getting back in touch with her passions. Quill: I’m just so happy he has his selvenar and sister. Their scenes warm my heart and he is a steady presence in the cabal. And reliable for snark. Ariadne: her strength, grace, dignity and how she fought her was back to herself. Aden: This poor man has been through so much. I’m just happy he is slowly finding redemption and peace. Thorne and Cistine: finding their way towards healing. However, these characters do not use one another to heal. The work on healing themselves, in a healthy way. And grow ever-closer as a result.

“She was in no place to tell him how to heal his pain, and he was in no position to heal hers.”

I want to conclude with a note that: this book can be heart clenching but it is also full of hope and so much humour! Pippet causes mischief to no end, as do other characters. They find time for beautiful moments together, as a found family. Which is so precious and heart-warming. A LOT happens in this book, one of the most exciting events belongs to the mystery quote at the beginning of this review… And the ending definitely has me itching for the next book because I NEED ANSWERS and RESOLUTIONS. Also I can’t wait to see what Cistine does in this next chapter...and Ashe...and everyone. Overall: Such a wonderful continuation of a truly excellent series!

Some particularly heart-stirring quotes in no particular order:

“What did you do to your hair?”
“Preparation for today’s ceremony. I thought of dyeing it fuchsia, but tatiana refused.” Laughter danced in his eyes…’

“What we see as different, the gods often deem miraculous.”

“Salvator that stars-damned bandayo

“I’d sooner wreck every promise of our peace between our kingdoms than watch these men tear you down.”
...
“She’d claimed her freedom but forfeited her sanity.”
...
“It’s curiosity that makes tinkers and inventors of us all.”

“...Book after book slid off the shelf revealing the true benefit of training: the ability to carry more books.”

“The truth is, I don’t think wholeness is a place we’re going. It’s a lifelong journey. We’ll never escape what happened to us because it’s a part of our story now, but we get to choose is we live on that page forever or move on and write the next one.”

“She was in no place to tell him how to heal his pain, and he was in no position to heal hers.”

“She walked in that darkness with you so you could find the light together.”

“Clear as moonlight in this empty, endless desert, he was just like her: riddled with mistakes, hung on hope, desperate to make amends.”

“A woman with battle in her blood and fire in her gaze, with the power to change the stars.”

Renee's writing is, as always, absolutely incredible. These truly are characters that will stay with you—in "ensemble casts" in books I sometimes lose track of who is who when there is a lot going on but I honestly have not found that with the cabal. They are so well defined, their stories and backgrounds so clear-cut.

This is a story of healing, and it resonated with me in a lot of ways. Many of the cabal have past traumas to face, and Renee deals with this in an exceptionally sensitive manner. I found this book to be very character-driven, and I really enjoyed that because there was so much to learn from each of the characters.

The ending was absolutely jaw-dropping, and I can't wait to see what the next book has in store. If you haven't already read any of the Starchaser Saga you absolutely should because this epic high fantasy continues to blow me away.

Lightfall is a sigh of relief, a comforting hug, the calm between storms. Following the fast-paced, traumatic events of Nightwing, Lightfall gives Cistine and the other members of the cabal time to breathe and process and heal. We need more fantasy books that show characters acting like humans and struggling with mental health, slowing down after enduring trauma, and seeking therapy.

As much as I love Cistine and her character growth throughout the series, Ashe continues to have the standout arc for me. I thought she had reached her lowest point in Nightwing, but NOPE, Renee continues to put her through the ringer. Losing everything that defined her, feeling utterly worthless, facing her past mistakes, and being forced to choose who and what she wants to be for herself… HER JOURNEY IS EVERYTHING!

Maleck’s increased presence was wonderful. And the romance was wonderful. Everything was wonderful.

As book 4 of 7, Lightfall is a turning point in the series, revealing the resolution of plots set into motion in book 1 and charting a new direction for the series. This book has so many sweet, soft, joyful, and emotional moments to balance the pain, but when I started feeling like it was all too good to be true… I was right. The ending was shocking and absolutely heartbreaking, but also strangely satisfying.

BEAUTIFUL.

Vague review to keep spoilers away.

This was a gorgeous middle book filled with some necessary healing and loving scenes that I was swooning left and right over. I loved many many moments and even highlighted some quotes (I’m terrible at remembering to highlight parts I love).

The character development is as always, first and foremost in my mind and Lightfall brings it. I loooove seeing how these character continue to move forward from trauma and intensity of all the things that have happened.

I like how Cistine stays at the forefront of this group, but that each book seems to highlight another’s journey. This one followed Ashe the most and while I occasionally wanted to shake her, I’m so happy to see where she is now. The focus on therapy and speaking your truths is a theme throughout.

The PAIN of that ending though has me on pins and needles and I NEED ANSWERS.

Overall audience notes:
- Fantasy
- Language: a little
- Romance: closed door
- Violence: high
- Trigger/Content Warnings: murder, physical and magical altercations, battle themes, torture, loss of loved ones, PTSD, mentions of rape and sexual assault

My heart is still trying to calm down after finishing Lightfall. God, I love this series and can't get enough of it. I'm so invested in Cistine, the Cabal and everything they encounter. This book just like the ones before it will take you on a epic journey, which is want I like to experience in a fantasy novel.

The stakes in this book are higher because there is more that can be taken away. The decisions that Cistine, Thorne, Titiana, Quill, Aden, Ashe and Maleck have to make are harder than before. I'm glad there was more on Ashe and Maleck in this one, which I believe the author does a great job with each book putting one or two of the main characters in the forefront.

I'm just trying to prepare myself for what's in store when I start Book Five.

If there was an option to give a book more stars on this website, this would be the only Book I ever give more than a five. I've been in love with this series from the beginning, and the Cabal will forever have a place in my heart. While Dugan continues to push the plot into darker territory with each book, I think the most beautiful and impressive feat of this one is her ability to allow her characters to heal. I've never seen a more beautiful depiction of healing trauma in fantasy, and this book will stick to my soul for the rest of my life. I can't wait for the next installment.

Before I drone on, I'm just going to say that Lightfall is the 6/5 star book in the series. All the other books are wonderful examples of Dugan's writing, but this one... this one is gift for the soul.

Let's go on a journey of Piper's feelings about each book in this series so far...

#1 - Darkwind
My first marathon, for which I did not well train. It was long and I wasn't sure if it would finish well, but DANG! That twisty-turny ending gave me a sweet taste of a victorious book.

#2 - Dawnstar
My second marathon, brutal but necessary. Gruesome unexpected character deaths, slave fights, cabal disagreements, and absolute shredding of Ashe's pride (and, well, her flesh). But Cistine grew exponentially and looked like a real queen, finally!

#3 - Nightwing
Okay. Okay. I almost died during my Nightwing-a-thon, which took a while. Reading this book was like hitting the wall during a run, chest-heaving, dying and about to throw up any second (not that I know what that's like, but I'm sticking with the running analogy).

#4 - Lightfall
Compared to all the others, this one felt like *nothing* to get through. Like I finally caught my second wind. Don't get me wrong, all the books are great, but this one was the definition of healing. All the trauma and pain and lingering sourness of it was addressed, cradled, and finally felt like my lungs weren't going to give out because it was so harsh. If I hadn't known that the characters were going to tackle healing, I would have been afraid to open this one. But it was beautiful.

There was a part in the series that essentially said "stand alone or fall together" and I was not feeling it, especially when a large swath of the book didn't come back to it, I was like "oh no. It's going to punch me in the face when I'm not expecting it." But then, it didn't. It gave me a hug when I wasn't expecting it. Like the kind of hug that's anguished, like you're saying goodbye for a while, but it has to be there. And probably none of this makes sense to anyone but me, but that's ok.

It's the best book of the series. Fin.

Okay whatever you're doing right now, stop and go order Lightfall😂 (or if you haven't started the Starchaser Saga yet, it begins with 'Darkwind', by Renee Dugan. Lightfall is book 4!)

It has:
- Found family
- Caracters you connect with deeply
- A princess working on her combat AND negotiation skills
- Unique twist on the 'chosen one' trope (it's not the defining trait of Cistine's character by any means)
- Realistic progression through trauma & fear
- Brilliantly-crafted courtroom scenes
- Heartfelt, realistic friendships, relationships, kinship & sisterhood
- Humbling & empowering character arcs
- The most beautiful prose

Lightfall is a pivotal point for the saga, and feels like a 'step up' not only in its storyline but in its execution. While Nightwing was brilliant, Lightfall is on a whole other level. It hits harder, runs deeper, climbs higher, and shines brighter - I can see just how much has gone into writing it. We also hear from three other viewpoints in this one, so the tension between each chapter is nail-bitingly good!

Seeing Cistine overcome trauma and growing stronger is so humbling to read. The presentation is so gradual and realistic, with relapses as she realises healing is a process (see 5th slide). Every chapter, I felt like I was learning and understanding more about life.

I picked out so many quotes to save, squealed, gasped, and sometimes just had to stop and reread a paragraph because it was so beautiful, in absolute awe of Renee's writing and the masterful way she has crafted this story. It highlights how she has improved EVEN MORE as a writer, and (much like her characters) in Lightfall, the progression is stunning.

If you've been looking for a fantasy series free of typical tropes (but has cute heartwarming ones when it counts😆), great depth to its characters, gorgeous passages, and beautiful aesthetics (castles, princesses & warriors!!) - this is your series.

Seriously, it's in my top 5 favourites - and we're only halfway there.

Lightfall is a beautiful book of healing, and the therapy rep is incredible. So many fantasy books skip over the trauma their characters endure, but Renee did a wonderful job of keeping their pasts centered without keeping them from moving forward. The ending stressed me out though, and now I am eagerly awaiting the next one.

Wow. That was an emotional journey for sure! This is by far my favorite book out of the series! Especially since it focused on my favorite OTP in this one 😍

Seriously, though, everyone has gone through so much, and all the baggage everyone has been carrying literally just spills all over the floor in this book and it’s heart wrenching. Especially for the ladies and what they went through. I admire their strength to keep going despite the horrors they went through(especially Ariadne omg). Cistine has to face her inner turmoil, especially since it’s so fresh for her, but I love how the cabal takes their time with her, with each other. They know how to help without being over burdening, but are always there, always available to help, to talk.

And then poor Ashe! I feel for her so much because here she is thinking she belongs no where and deserves no one after her mistakes, and to see her struggle with herself and her thoughts was just agonizing! Her journey is one of my favorites probably because it’s relatable. We all make mistakes, and we may feel like we don’t deserve forgiveness, but it’s what we do after those mistakes to fix them and be accountable for them and learning that you do deserve forgiveness(from others, but also from yourself), especially if you are sorry and look forward, not back. It was slow going for Ashe, and she went through a lot before she finally forgave herself, but once she did, she came out so much stronger for it.

Then the romance 😍 I just have no words for it. Like I said, my favorite OTP in this one, and loved every moment of it 😁

And after that ending, I’m going to be rather impatient waiting for the next book to see what happens next!

Thank you to the author for a free e-arc copy to read and review!

Green isn't my favorite color but it certainly is Lightfall's! This book was an emotional roller coaster that made me laugh, cry, smile, and smuggle the book into school so I could keep reading it!

Cistine and Thorne's relationship has to be my favorite out of all of them in the series. When his face and voice reminds her of her abuser, he is patient and gives her the time and space to recover. When a special something happens at the end of the book, I was so happy!

I am very excited to watch Ashe's relationships with herself and her new "co-worker" mature in Bloodsinger! I am also very excited to watch the Cabel work together to defeat the enemy because they function so well together!

I look forward to seeing the New Cistine functioning where she ends up at the end of the book, I think it will be very interesting to see how people treat her and continue to treat her.

All in all, I loved this book even more than the last one (I'm not surprised anymore because Renee Dugan is such a fantabulous writer, I expect nothing less)! I eagarly await to add Bloodsinger to my shelf because not only did this book leave off on a huge cliffhanger, but I can't wait to see how all the characters are going to grow and mature in the face of this daunting challenge!

The author, Renee Dugan got me this time. I found myself tearing up and crying a few times due to how much I have fallen in love with the characters in this book. Their pain, love, and strength was felt at every page.

Most of the time the first book of a series is the best and the favorite. Not with this one. I loved each book more and more and this is now my favorite. Bring on book 5!!

I loved this book. It was my favorite one in the series so far. The storyline was a little softer and really focused on healing the characters from the trauma they experienced in earlier books. It ended so differently then I thought it would and left me excited for the next one.

I was super lucky to receive an E ARC of LIGHTFALL and let me tell ya, friends, Renee has surely done it again. Like, when I’m saying she out did herself, I’m putting that lightly bc LIGHTFALL was truly a masterpiece!

I’ve been rooting for each and every one of these characters (well, not Salvotor) since book 1 and their journeys throughout LIGHTFALL brought them on a path to recovery and healing. Cistine, Ashe, and the rest of the Cabal have been through absolutely TRAUMA (that also might be putting it lightly 😅) in the events leading up to book 4 and seeing them persevere and push through it something so special to me as a reader. I’ve always loved Cistine’s character arc, from starting as an oblivious pampered princess into becoming a full blown badass warrior who fights for those around her. But what makes it even better is that Dugan doesn’t make the process an easy feat for Cistine. Unlike her early life, everything doesn’t come easy and served to her on a silver platter, and she has to learn how to handle those challenges, and she does so with grace and dignity. I’m so glad we got to see more of Cistine’s internal battle and how it mixed with her healing from the brutal events in NIGHTWING.

Renee Dugan has an absolute power in her words in the Starchaser Saga that has readers rooting for this ensemble cast of misfits. The internal struggles of all these characters are something that is so relatable to many readers and that is something that is truly appreciate in the book world as we get lost in these stories. So, LIGHTFALL is an absolute powerhouse of a book (as usual with all of Dugan’s books) and you are all not ready for this fantastic story of the beauty of healing and recovery! I probably end every Starchaser book with this but- IS IT TIME FOR THE NEXT ONE YET??

Thanks for yet another incredible book, Renee!!

The entire Starchaser Saga stole my heart from book 1, and LIGHTFALL just took it to another level. The beauty of healing that's conveyed between these pages is spot on. After everything that's happened to this Cabal, they needed a break, a time to recoup and a time to heal their many wounds before the next round of threats weighs them down.

LIGHTFALL makes me want to write this entire review in heart-eye emojis for all the beautiful love stories that were presented. The romance (and justice) in this story was my absolute favorite part. I gushed happy tears and yelled "yes!" while reading, far too many times to count.

I love being in this world. I love every hero. I love every emotional rollercoaster Renee Dugan takes me on. Her writing is spectacular and this series is one of my all-time favorites, ever. This story, and all the ones before it, will immerse you into a world you don't want to leave and into relationships you're convinced are as real as you are.

I will never stop singing my praises for this series, and LIGHTFALL just became my new favorite.

This series just keeps getting better and better. Ever since finishing Nightwing, I'd been excited and scared to see what happens next and Lightfall sure didn't disappoint. This book really deals with the aftermath of Nightwing in such a transparent and caring way. I love the cabal and the way they support each other and bring out each other's strengths. The prose is beautiful as per usual and the subtle dread that trickles through is just perfection. Salvatore is a delightfully vile and despicable person and I absolutely loved him as a villain. The whole time he had me on edge, wondering how things would go horribly wrong because how could they not? And I loved seeing Cistine's plan finally play out in Talheim and how much she's grown as a person and future queen. And the ending! I was NOT expecting that turn. OMG. I can not wait to get my hands on the next book.

Infuriating and enticing

I was wholly unprepared for the twists and turns, highs and lows, and ever deepening plot in this installment. Both infuriating and enticing, I gobbled up every moment of agony and triumph, yelling out loud at the last page, “Now what?!” Which is pretty much the highest praise I can give a book; needing to know how the story ends. Here’s hoping I don’t have to wait too long to find out!

I love it. It continues the saga with depth and emotion. I wept. I fell in love with the characters again. And I wait in anticipation and fear for these characters I adore so much. Highly recommend this fantasy series.

I have loved this series since its beginning, and though I have been busy with school and put off reading so many good books, I am glad I got to this one. First of all, I have been trying to read more indie recently because you guys - these books are something else. Books like this one, for example! The first three were great, and this one was the same. The characters remain consistent but grow, the writing is so amazing and really takes you in so you can experience everything as though you are with these characters and not just reading the book. Cistine has dealt with so much and grown, but she is also healing and broken, and Dugan writes this really well - balancing strength with damage and the pain you have gone through. And in this book, Cistine has really grown. She’s gone from kind of naive in the first book to this young woman who has realized her strengths. She is a character that means a lot to me because I am a lot like her. Ugh I just loved this book so much. Dugan, once again, you have entranced me. Thank you for this series, and I am so excited to read the fifth.

By now, it shouldn’t be a surprise that I loved this book so much. I already KNOW the next 3 books are going to be 5 star reads as well. I just love this series. I LOVE every member of the cabal.

This one was slower, the calm before the storm. The cabal was processing their grief and trauma, taking the much needed time to heal. I loved that.

There were so many beautiful moments, happy moments, heartbreaking moments. I cried several times both in joy and sadness. All the feels!

The entire Starchaser Saga so far makes me regret handing out 5 stars to most of the other books that I have previously read. Lightfall was a 5+++☆ read. SO GOOD. I dont know how else I can gush about this series. Just read it already!!
