As sixth grade draws to a close, Brynn Finley and her friends reflect on everything they have been through together that year. Not only have they defeated Phaedra the sea witch several times, but they have also learned important life lessons that have made them better merfolk. However, their education is not done yet. When an unexpected substitute teacher takes over Brynn’s math class, she discovers deep seated prejudice that she must navigate while teaming up with her friends to put a stop to Phaedra’s newest act of mischief.

This fifth installment in the A Mermaid in Middle Grade series takes a firm stance on both acceptance and conservation. Brynn is immediately distrustful of her substitute teacher, Mr. Aquarius, simply because he is a dagon, like Phaedra’s henchman Ian Fletcher. Instead of giving him a chance, though, Brynn jumps to conclusions and wishes to oust Mr. Aquarius without a compelling reason. As Brynn begins to realize the error of her ways, she comes across a human boy and makes a different choice than she might have made otherwise. Seeing their chance, Brynn and her friends share ways the boy, and the reader by extension, can help protect the ocean from harm.

Short chapters and an action-focused storyline keep the pages turning in this delightful book. Mid-level middle grade readers will appreciate this stepping stone as they become more comfortable reading independently, and they will learn important lessons along the way. Though Brynn sometimes goes over the top in her behaviors and the mistakes she makes, these dramatic moments embed themselves in readers’ minds. After all, stories are meant to help readers see familiar human situations in a new light, and Brynn’s adventures aid middle grade readers in managing similar challenges in their own lives.

This prolific series is a highly recommended and enjoyable escape for middle grade readers who love mermaids, friendship, conservation, and building a better world for all.

In this book, 6th grade is coming to an end and summer vacation is about to start. But Brynn is confronted with a new substitute teacher who is a dagon. She instantly doesn't like the poor teacher just because he reminds Brynn of Ian Fletcher who is Pheada's bad guy dagon assistant. Brynn must navigate all these new feelings and learn that everyone should be judged by their own actions not others' actions. And of course, she and her friends must foil Phaedra's next evil plan to destroy humans. Still enjoying reading this series to my nine-year-old daughter.
