Understanding student and teacher motivation and developing strategies to foster motivation for students at all levels of performance are essential to effective teaching. A Review of Motivation for Achievement: Possibilities for Teaching and Learning by M. Kay Alderman

Rating: Three Stars

Edition: Second Edition Paperback

Genre: Education

Motivation for Achievement: Possibilities for Teaching and Learningis an educational book by M. Kay Alderman. As the title implies, it focuses on aspects of motivation with students. I originally purchased this book while I was still in a teacher education program. Alas, looking back through it, this book is geared more for beginning teachers and does not contain as many strategies as I'd like. However, it is still worth the read.

The book covers the following aspects/chapters:
-"Setting the Stage for Motivational Possibilities
-Social-Cognitive Processes That Influence Motivation
-The Classroom Climate for Optimal Engagement and Motivation"
These three are the main categories but they go in-depth with other sub-categories.

Overall, I was able to find a few things to add to my teaching toolbox after a second and third read-through. I really wish the book gave more specific strategies, instead of mostly research and theory. I do think that it is worth the read, though, especially if you have students who need motivation (what teacher doesn't?). Three stars.
