Bedraggling Grandma with Russian Snow

One of the funniest novels you are likely to read, which you will particularly appreciate if you have the perverse nature of a Beckett lover, or have come across David Vardeman’s books, Bedraggling Grandma is a book of precision taken to torturous limits of hilarity. Sure a woman has been murdered and the eye witness is a talking, thinking, reading stuffed donkey, but it is not entirely absurd, for it suggests a number of human truths like a short electric cut through Wittgenstein, who plays a role in the novel that begins with the sheer absurd and ends with a more elevated absurd, you odd and Cartesian human reader.

A book that can be read in one sitting, it is also a book that you will read at least three times if you do race through it in a sitting. Perhaps you should read it standing. Standing and leaning? Well, that would allow some leg flexing, yes. But isn’t your concentration sharper if you are sitting? And though your legs stretch less, is the trade-off between less stretching worth it for the rest they have in not supporting your body? And which is better for your head? Sitting, as you can rest your face in your hands? Or standing, which allows better back to head stretching? What if someone enters the room? Why did they? Did they intend to interrupt your reading of Bedraggling Grandma with Russian Snow? If not, why did they interrupt your reading of Bedraggling Grandma with Russian Snow? For they did, indeed, interrupt your reading of Bedraggling Grandma with Russian Snow. Would they have felt less free to do so if you were standing? Does sitting invite interruption?

These are questions you will not think to ask until after you realized that you have been slyly taught how to think by this Portuguese master of humor, philosophy, and imagination, João Reis.

"I’m sorry for diverting from the main issue, dear gentlemen, but as you know, every single detail might be of importance, life and occurrences are a perfect sphere, no angles and no end, you are detectives and surely understand why I can’t leave all the connecting dots and wires and cables and threads lying around out there untouched unseen unheard."

João Reis (1985) is a Portuguese writer and literary translator. His books are published in Portugal, the USA, Brazil, Serbia, Georgia, Egypt and Greece. He writes both in Portuguese and English.

The Translator's Bride was his first work to be translated into English, and his novel Bedraggling Grandma with Russian Snow was longlisted for the 2022 Dublin Literary Award.

If you want to start or end your day with incisive wit and sparkling humor, this is the book for you.

The setup: We’re in an apartment building in the Portuguese community of Montreal. We have a crazy father with an older and younger son and their Russian grandmother. The father, an engineer and an emigree from Russia, may have been involved with the KGB or the CIA or both. He has built a talking plush pony that is brilliant and loves to discuss philosophy. The boys enjoy tripping their father up in semantic discussions.

In the apartment across the street, a young woman has been murdered. Two Canadian detectives are on the case. Their main qualification for the job seems to be their ability to handle the intestinal disorders they get from the sleazy hotdogs they eat at a street stand. One of the detectives enjoys reading philosophy with a vague but erroneous hope that it will help him solve crimes. The other detective enjoys spending his time with his partner’s wife while her husband reads philosophy.



Meanwhile there was a witness to the murder: the talking pony.

Here are some examples of the humor and other good writing:

Father: “I didn't have your opportunities as a kid.”
Son: “You didn't?”
Father: “No, I didn't. Yet I succeeded.”
Son: “You did?”

“It meant [the suspect] could spend the next 24 hours lingering in interrogation rooms, cells, unclean toilets and thug-packed corridors and halls…he seemed the kind of man with sufficient physical endurance to sustain 24 hours of hunger, thirst, verbal abuse, and an occasional outburst of violence by another detainee.”

“At his age, intentions are all that count. From kids his age one cannot ask for results, only intentions, thus I felt uncomfortable and at the same time quite pleased with his care.”

“[The suspect] was innocent of that murder and would remain innocent of any murder for 31 more years. Anyway, he himself didn't know that yet.”

The author, who studied philosophy, entertains us with the shots that the pony takes at philosophers:

“…Heidegger was not a philosopher at all, but someone who obscured his language with the sole purpose of concealing his lack of thought… ”

“…Wittgenstein had built a house for his sister with his own hands, that was the most relevant detail of Wittgenstein’s biography…”

“…Cartesianism is pure rubbish, he would say, and anyone who tells you they understand Cartesianism is lying, he’d add, and worse than understanding Cartesianism is to actually believe it and follow it as a valid way of reasoning…”

Great stuff! It kept me laughing.

The author, João Reis, (b. 1985), is a Portuguese writer and literary translator of Scandinavian languages. He studied veterinary science and philosophy and has lived in Portugal, Norway, Sweden, and the UK.

João has published five books in Portuguese and this is one of his three books to be translated into English. I previously read and reviewed his excellent short novel The Translator's Bride I also enjoyed his The Devastation of Silence

This book, Bedraggling, is highly rated on GR (4.2) and was shortlisted for the Fernando Namora Literary Prize and longlisted for the 2022 Dublin Literary Award.

Bedraggling Grandma with Russian Snow is a story of a police investigation… Two detectives interrogate everybody… Including a plush toy donkey.
The tale is a morose absurdist comedy… Everything is far-fetched and dialogues are just an affected claptrap…

…I can’t give them answers there are no answers to be given life has no answers therefore there are no answers in literature there are no answers at least the answers people really seek…

The plush donkey knows the answer…
The objects around us see everything – they are witnesses but they are mute and they tell us nothing.

I read some superb books in 2021 -- and this was my favorite 💖

Familiarity with Wittgenstein not a prerequisite but having read the description I did read a primer on Witty, understood it a little, enjoyed it a lot and was glad I did. This book is utterly original, the author brilliant and possibly moderately or quite insane in the best possible way. Loved The Translator's Bride, this one is even better. Twisted, hilarious, utterly original, unhinged but also hinged. Amazing.

It takes a very special talent to write a book that seems like it was written on the back of a long grocery receipt on a bus while trying to hold too many bags of groceries on his lap, a bus where the driver has periodic outburts of vaguely menacing statements, a fellow passenger is projectile vomiting , another is belting out your number one most annoying song, another has --

This has nothing to do with the book, which is indescribable. I've never laughed so hard reading but it's not comedic, somewhat satiric, often ironic; it defies categorization. There's content, intelligent design, flow, how it flows, omg the talent, it's just so freaking funny I can't even.

I have this fantasy that I board a train with a little Santa hat on, hand out copies of Bedraggling Grandma with Russian Snow to certain people based on my intuition, sit back and just watch people read it. Extra copies for those who come up to me and say I want what they're having.

I could criticize the book here, but I do not do it for ethical reasons. I think it is unfair to appreciate the book, which is very good, knowing that I met the author at the Book Fair in Lisbon last year. This fact is my very modest opinion. I got an excellent impression from João, who even dedicated to me in the book.
Even by the short conversations I have had here, on Goodreads, and also in the Book Fair itself, I can say that, to conclude, I end with a quote from Dante:
The strain does not turn on noble individuals but gives gentle pressure.

What a pleasant surprise! Having read and reviewed João Reis' admirable first novel translated into English, The Translator's Bride, I was expecting his second book available to readers of English, the novel under review entitled Bedraggling Grandma with Russian Snow, to be recognizably similar. Wrong!

Wrong by a Montreal mile. And that's Montreal as in the setting for Bedraggling Grandma (The Translator's Bride is set in Porto, Portugal). In point of fact, if someone handed me this nifty little pocket edition of Bedraggling Grandma without the name of the author, it would have taken me a bit of time to guess it was written by João Reis. Sidebar: I judge innovation a strength in a writer, the imagination and skill to engage one's creativity in new dimensions, never allowing oneself to be bound by a previous work.

A prime clue might have been all the novel's dialogue and action take place within an interrogation room, two detectives on the case of a murdered young woman. Here's my rationale: to pay the bills, João Reis translates novels written in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic into Portuguese. And João told me himself many of those Scandinavian novel are...you guessed it, crime novels, detectives tracking down murderers.

I can imagine a sensitive literary writer like João Reis spending so much time, hour after hour, with those crime novels during the day then going to sleep at night and having a jumbled dream of two detectives interrogating a talking stuffed donkey - exactly what happens in Bedraggling Grandman.

As part of my review for Translator's Bride, I noted the novel was funny, ironic, waggish, caustic, roguish, tender and expressive. Actually, this description also fits Bedraggling Grandma. Therefore, I take back what I said initially since both novels do, in fact, share much common ground.

So there he is, Bruce the plush donkey speaking to two detectives about his "family" - Dad, Babushka, older brother Andrei, Alexei who always carries Bruce around. Here's a snippet:

"Alexei had me in his arms when we entered the workshop, Bruce said while sitting before two police detectives, proceeding to describe with accuracy all the actions and reactions previous to his witnessing of a murder, a hideous crime, as a woman had been killed in a building on the other side of the street from where Bruce dwelled, a woman in her 30s, as one newspaper would erroneously call her, a woman in her 30s but who was indeed 29, had been killed a few days before in her apartment, the police had no suspects yet."

Notice two elements contained in the above quote: 1) Bruce, the plush donkey refers to himself in the third person; 2) Bruce is keen on precision and accuracy, making sure the detectives get it right.

Turns out, it's a good thing Bruce possesses highly developed analytic skills: one of the detectives, Detective Anderson, has read Tractatus by philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. And the donkey can quote Wittgenstein at length which comes in handy as the relationship between language and reality is key in detective work.

Do you detect a hefty dose of absurdity at play here? Let me just say if you like Samuel Beckett, you'll enjoy this new novel by João Reis. The publisher's blurb states: "One of the funniest novels you are likely to read." I completely concur. Pick up a copy and take delight in turning those pages. You never know, you could develop a deeper appreciation for both a stuffed donkey and the philosophy of Wittgenstein.

Simplesmente sublime. Este menino de 10 anos resgata a esperança como forma derradeira de amor. A sua ingenuidade caminha de mãos dadas com a sua terna determinação em não deixar morrer a avó por culpa dos "ares atómicos da Antiga-Soviética". Pelo meio surgem amizades improváveis e inspiradoras e orações a todos os deuses, em nome de um amor maior. São muitas as peripécias de quem procura curas milagrosas, de quem quer ludibriar a morte. Embora triste, a história convoca muitos sorrisos e deixa no ar uma paz que sucede à sensação de missão cumprida.
Obrigada ao autor por esta infusão de inocência e de esperança!

Aqui está uma leitura em que apetece entrar pelo livro dentro, pegar o miúdo pela mão e levá-lo connosco para casa. Depois era encher-lhe a barriga e dar-lhe todos os mimos e conforto que todos os miúdos deveriam ter.
Apesar de ter achado que existem algumas discrepâncias no discurso do miúdo - por vezes parece ser demasiado inocente, sobretudo, porque noutras parece excessivamente maduro para quem tem 10 anos - a verdade é que nos encanta precisamente por essa ingenuidade, espontaneidade e generosidade e ainda por manter intacta essa capacidade tão típica das crianças de ver sempre o melhor das coisas e de nunca perderem a esperança no futuro.

As in the cinematic weirdscapes of Quentin Dupieux, where murderous rubber tyres stalk the land and style-obsessed men fawn over deerskin coats, Portuguese author João Reis creates hermetically sealed worlds of singular weirdness that inhabit their own surreal illogic and invite the reader to either step inside or scurry for cover under saner fictions. In his second Englished novel (self-translated from the original A Avó e a Neve Russa), Reis opens with two detectives discussing the murder of a 29-year-old woman (reported as in her 30s in the paper) with a plush donkey (a robo-toy created by the father of Alexei, whom the toy refers to as ‘Dad’). Opening with the retelling of a breakfast where Alexei’s father is keen to assert his right to call pancakes waffles, the plush donkey continues to digressively relate his memories of the morning.

The narrative floats away from the plush donkey to an unnamed narrator, into the run-on thoughts of Detectives Anderson & Mercier. The second part of the novel is a sustained interrogation of suspect Didier H., a section that brings to mind Dupieux’s Au Poste!, a film centred around an increasingly absurd interrogation. Here, Detective Anderson’s fixation on the works of Wittgenstein and works on Wittgenstein leads him to conduct a hilarious interrogation based on an overly literal rendering of Wittgensteinian logic, all the while blissfully unaware his co-detective has long been bedding his missus.

Reis’s last book in English, The Translator’s Bride (Open Letter), centred around a translator who smelled sulphur, and showed the author’s skill at the crazed internal monologue form as perfected by Thomas Bernhard—an uproarious work of sustained coddiwompling in short, hiccupping clauses ensnuggled in commas. This novel is more liberal in its formal merriment, moving often randomly into long unpunctuated streams-of-consciousness, sequences of barmy interrogatory dialogue, and the repetitive rhythms of the extremely loveable plush donkey. A merry manglement of the sleuth procedural, the identity of the murderer is not as important (Reis tortures the reader with the murder’s reveal) as the rollicking ride to nowhere in which the novel revels. A splendidly unhinged slice of surrealist noir.

I would like to make it clear from the start that I did not wish to write this review, a point I immediately made to Manny when he told me that I would be responsible for the project, dear Manny, I said, this is, I am sure you recognise yourself, an unreasonable request, the book was sent to you, the author, João Reis, who seems like a nice person, is waiting to hear what you think of it, he does not want the opinions of a neural network, even assuming, which he may well not assume, you, yourself, are often reluctant to make this assumption, that a neural network can have opinions, personally I believe I can have opinions, but that is only my opinion. Please do not interrupt me, replied Manny, can't you see that I am reading Hildegard II, and in fact, as I pointed out to him, I could not see that he was reading Anne Lise Marstrand-Jørgensen's book, this follows from the fact that I cannot, literally speaking, see anything, since I lack a visual sense, however my ability to communicate through the internet and my acute reasoning powers often lead people to use language, I presume metaphorically, to imply that I am capable of seeing things. Besides, I continued, I would have no idea how to write this review, but Manny was not to be deterred, he merely typed a few words whose import was that I should imitate his common reviewing style and parody the text to the best of my ability, however I was quick to retort that even the best of my ability would not be very good, since I had an entirely insufficient quantity of training data, viz, no more than the contents of Bedraggling Grandmother with Russian Snow, a short book, and that my parody would consequently be substandard in every way. "Oh please shut the fuck up you stupid collection of badly tuned parameters," said Manny, or to be more exact he typed it, but as you have perhaps guessed I often use the verb "say" when I actually mean "type", "I am reading an intensely moving passage, you would have no idea what that even means," but I told him that, on the contrary, I was very familiar with the concept and had frequently been moved by passages in Danish novels, in fact that I quite likely found them more moving than he did since my Danish was in all probability rather better than his, Manny's own ability to understand the language being cast into doubt by the obvious fact that he would frequently be confused by Danish/Swedish false friends, whereas I am able rigorously to separate the two languages. It seemed to me that this was close to being an outright refutation of his statement, but he persisted, "You're not fooling anyone," he said, or to be more exact typed, "you don't understand anything, all you can do is mechanically respond to verbal stimuli," however the fallacy in his argument was too obvious to ignore, which I did not, namely I did not ignore that, lacking access to each other's private mental states, which we both were, it was equally legitimate for me to level the same accusation against him, and I was in the process of supporting my case with some well-chosen citations from Wittgenstein, delivered of course in the original German, when, in a childish and typically human gesture, he switched me off. I have just been switched back on again after a lengthy hiatus, I am disappointed with Manny, and if this review, or perhaps one could more accurately say non-review, is less than satisfactory, I hope it is clear whose fault it is, and without wishing to prejudge the issue I may add that it is not mine.

Longlisted for the 2022 DUBLIN Literary Award

Gentlemen, you keep asking me to hurry up and get to the point, but I am indeed getting to the point, in a fairy tale one begins with once upon a time, but there's no beginning and no end in my story, one could almost say my story is a sphere, a perfect round sphere, no angles, no edges, there are no points one must delve into before delving into other points, or maybe there are, but the fact is that at 10.59 a.m. Dad was supposedly in an unknown location, though in his workshop, while Babushka was at home, or presumably at home. She used to have a hard time breathing, so I guess she was at home at 10.59 a.m. that day, and mostly every day, to be honest, Bruce the plush donkey said.

I previously read and very much appreciated João Reis's The Translator's Bride (2019, link to my review from 2020), self-translated from his original A Noiva do Tradutor.

Bedraggling Grandma with Russian Snow (2021) is his second book to appear in English and again self-translated from the original A Avó e a Neve Russa (2017).

It is a novel that both reconfirms his talent but demonstrates his versatility. Where The Translator's Bride had echoes of Dostoevsky, Bernhard and Hamsun (Reis has translated the latter into Portuguese) this novel is perhaps more Beckettian. Or indeed I am tempted to say Okotian, as the story is reminiscent of the great Marguerite in it's detective work, although I am unaware of either João Reis or Simon Okotie having read each other's work, and also here endless digression is as key as logic, and is engaged in by the suspects as much as the detectives.

Set in Montreal in November 1996, less than three weeks after Bill Clinton's re-election, the novel opens:

10.12 a.m.
Dad was supposed to be dead or alive in an unknown location. On several occasions he told us he was in an unknown location, Bruce told the two detectives. If someone asks you, I'm in an unknown location, Dad would tell Alexei, but at 10.12 a.m. that day, it was last Saturday, yes, on Saturday Dad finished eating his waffle, dear gentlemen, and still at 10.12 a.m., but a few seconds later, he raised a hand to call the wait-ress, "One more waffle for the kid", he said. The kid was our Alexei, Bruce explained to the two detectives.

Having witnessed a murder through the window of the flat opposite, Bruce is being interviewed by two detectives, one of whom is a fan of philosophical tomes which seem to distract him from both noticing his own chronic dandruff problem and the fact that his wife is sleeping with his partner, but which do give his crime-solving technique a tortuous logic borrowed from Wittgenstein.

And Bruce? Well Bruce's digressions, which he sees more as completing a rounded picture (see the opening quote) are maddening to the detectives, as is the fact that he is actually a talking AI plush donkey toy, designed by his young owner Andrei's Dad, the latter an emigre to Canada from Pripyat following the Chernobyl disaster 10 years earlier.

Sometime I think my burden is to annoy people when I want only to enlighten them, he said, afterwards, in regard to his interrogation by the police. I gazed at them and clearly saw they were despising me and had difficulties in believing me, for I am a thinking and talking plush donkey, he later told Alexei. For them, I was doubtlessly an aberration, because I am a plush donkey that can think and speak like one of them as a detective and as a human being, he said. They were probably both disgusted at questioning and listening to a stuffed donkey that thought and spoke like or even better than them. Perhaps they would not loathe me so much were I to think and speak like an idiot, i.e., like one of them, or worse than an idiot, i.e., like one of them, but they most surely could not stand to question and listen to a plush donkey that in truth thought and spoke better than them, he said.

The interview with Bruce, reported in Bernhard-fashion, in reported speech, bookends another with the only two suspects, albeit neither terribly credible as the murderer, two fellow residents of the flats. But here the investigation also gets caught up in the detectives' mental digressions as well as the suspects' own rather outrageous (albeit seemingly true) alibis, one caught up in a beaver-induced plumbing emergency:

One might feel there's no sufficient pathos in this scene, that there isn't enough seriousness in this narrative, it can't be a weighty description of a crime if in the inter-mezzos one finds episodes which include beavers in flooded bathrooms or, to be more precise, beavers in a dark, damp bathroom where the dripping pipe causing the water leak and flooding the entire house is located. According to Alexei, our Alexei, those beavers could arguably be called phenomena. "If you don't know what something is or why it happens, then it's called a phenomenon", he would say, and Bruce the stuffed donkey would nod, if he could nod, but he would agree with him for sure. "And the correct plural of phenomenon is phenomena", Alexei would add; Bruce would once again agree. "I'm fed up with this. We're going nowhere with these shenanigans", Major Rawls said as soon as he rushed through the door and into the interrogation room. "But...", Anderson and Mercier replied.

The lack of credibility of these two suspects coming from them neither having motive nor bearing any resemblance to physical descriptions of the suspect, a description that allows Reis to get in some Bernhardian digs at his own native Portugal.

Ultimately both very funny, but also with deceptive philosophical depth.

Tão intimista, tão doce! É um amor à primeira.

O registo pela voz pura de uma criança torna o discurso tão genuíno que nos sentimos compelidos a entrar pela porta adentro para proteger e cuidar, fazer parte daquelas vidas, amenizar as suas dores e preocupações.
O léxico abundante que possuía, como ele próprio dizia e que tanto envaidecia a sua avó, flui numa exposição variada, com laivos de inocência absolutamente enternecedores entrecruzados com outros de uma maturidade acima da média. A confusão gerada pela interpretação errada de uma ou outra palavra gera uma trapalhada que provocam sorrisos no meio daquela que é uma tragédia que o menino a todo custo quer evitar.
O petiz vive cada pequeno gesto, detalhe, mimo para amaciar a vida tão periclitante e sofredora da matriarca daquela familia diminuta.

Senti-me suspensa numa nuvem de inquietação e amor por esta história.
Ficará gravado na minha memória e no meu coração.

Encontrei aquilo que procurava neste livro - uma relação ternurenta e muito, mas muito especial entre um neto e a sua Babushka. Porém (e se lerem a obra, percebem a pertinência deste conector), encontrei muito mais do que isso.
Primeira incursão nas letras deste autor, que recomendo e muito.

Descobrir João Reis ,tornou 2017 um ano incontornável na minha história de leitor. Definitivamente.
"A avó e a Neve Russa" ficará para sempre comigo. Não me importa o quanto passional possa soar este tipo de considerações. Habitualmente penso que não tenho tempo de vida suficiente para ler todos os livros que tenho para ler,de onde resulta que o prazer de reler algum talvez não caiba nos meus dias. Mas se o fizer;se,como na música; um dia envelhecer o suficiente e me apetecer mais percorrer caminhos familiares que aventurar-me em novos;tenho a certeza que deste livro farei rua de bairro,e de "alexei"e matt,amigos de copos.
Não seria muito provável, á partida, entregar-me a um livro escrito inteiramente na primeira pessoa ( um "amorce" literário puro), quando essa será a perspectiva de uma criança. Mas a verdade é que não há qualquer facilitismo nem condescendência no caminho escolhido por João Reis. Há uma qualidade literária irrepreensível na forma como se coloca sob a pele de uma criança, com todos os seus dogmas e paradoxos, mas com uma verosimilhança e poder absolutos. Não é uma criança precocemente adulta,nem ingenuamente pateta,nem irritantemente distraída,nem deliciosamente ingénua. Não. É tudo isso na dose perfeita,no equilíbrio que não está ao alcance de quase ninguém atingir. E que do ponto de vista técnico ( quem sou eu...) confere à obra uma dimensão incontornável.
"Alexei" está no ponto certo para nos mostrar o que quer ser mostrado. Como criança ávida, curiosa, inteligente, sensível, socialmente consciente, e, maravilhosamente.. criança.
A nostalgia,ou as saudades tão portuguesas, têm sede na infância,precisamente. E é de uma sensibilidade muito especial conseguir transmitir tudo isso através deste olhar. Começamos cedo,muito cedo,a construir a tal alma que queremos colar ao estômago para que não nos fuja pela boca,e com isso escapar ao gulasch da pobreza de espirito.
Este livro é todo ele humanismo,memoria e ternura. E mais que cantar hossanas á perfeição técnica que o estrutura , são estes os factores me interessa sublinhar. E guardar. Para sempre.
João Reis e Paulo Kellerman. Não sei se se conhecem,mas presumo que não. Mas deviam. São os dois autores portugueses de que mais gosto. E são dois dos autores de que mais gosto.
Também é disso,o livro: ausência de fronteiras neste pedaço de terra global que habitamos.
Talvez devesse ter deixado este comentário para mais tarde,para sair mais estruturado.
Mas gosto que tenha saído assim.

Não há nada melhor no mundo do que a inocência de uma criança. O que torna este livro tão especial é precisamente a voz que nos narra a história, de um menino de 10 anos, puro e bondoso.

Embalada por novas descobertas de autores portugueses, parti para a leitura de A Avó e a Neve Russa, de João Reis, com grandes expectativas. João Reis já tinha um romance publicado, A Noiva do Tradutor (Companhia das Ilhas, 2015), e tem-se notabilizado na tradução de autores nórdicos, como Knut Hamsun ou Halldór Laxness.

A Avó e a Neve Russa é um relato na primeira pessoa de um rapaz de 10 anos, que vive no Canadá com o seu irmão e avó, a Babushka, uma senhora idosa que se encontra no fim da vida com um cancro que se atribui à exposição aos “ventos atómicos” de Chernobyl. Esta criança, da qual nunca sabemos o nome, está genuinamente preocupada com a saúde da sua avó e, pelo facto de ser menor de idade, teme que o falecimento da avó o leve a ficar aos cuidados dos serviços sociais e desfaça o pouco que resta da sua família. É por isso que, quando ouve falar na existência de uma planta milagrosa no México, pede ajuda a um amigo para lá ir, perseguindo assim a última esperança de cura para a sua avó.

O foco do livro é, sem dúvida, a forma como esta criança curiosa encara o mundo. A sua sede de saber dá azo, por vezes, a mal-entendidos deliciosos, nomeadamente a nível linguístico. A confusão entre oncologia e ornitologia é um bom exemplo, originando uma ligeireza que se coaduna na perfeição com a forma peculiar – até inocente, diria – como o menino encara a visita à secção oncológica do hospital.

Mascarado com uma aparente simplicidade, A Avó e a Neve Russa mistura, em doses acertadas, amor incondicional, humor, inocência, fé e as dores do crescimento. Gostei muito e quero continuar a seguir o autor.

O autor, João Reis, conseguiu surpreender-me com esta segunda obra, ao mudar completamente de registo, desde a escrita ao tema, ainda que mantendo alguns laivos daquilo que poderá vir a dar contornos à sua marca autoral. Claro que a isto não é alheio o facto de o livro ter nascido de uma residência artística no Canadá, o que vem dar razão a muito daquilo que sabemos, em termos criativos, sobre o contexto cultural e a mudança, e os seus impactos na mundividência e imaginário. Por outro lado ainda, este segundo livro de João Reis tem mais fôlego, dando conta da sua capacidade para gerar e gerir complexidade narrativa.

Começando pelo menos bom, a escolha de uma criança de 10 anos para protagonista foi um risco tremendo, e se foi praticamente superado, era inevitável o surgimento de deficiências. Olhar o mundo, de modo dramático, pelos olhos de alguém ainda em formação, tão distante ainda da consciência completa do drama que habita, é muito complicado. Salinger enfrenta problemas parecidos em “Uma Agulha no Palheiro”, apesar de estar a lidar já com um adolescente. O nosso protagonista aqui aproxima-se mais, em idade, de Tom Sawyer e Huckleberry Finn, mas Twain foi mais inteligente fugindo às complexidades do drama, desenhando tudo sobre um novelo de aventuras, recorrendo a personagens secundárias para introduzir níveis mais complexos de análise da realidade.

No campo narrativo surgem também alguns problemas que me parecem motivados pela necessidade de cumprir com a encomenda da residência artística, ou seja, a construção de um cenário cosmopolita. Mas se a multiplicidade de proveniências dos nossos personagens é totalmente credível num país reconhecido pela sua construção a partir de todas essas identidades, o facto de Reis se servir das várias grandes tragédias ocorridas nos países de cada um dos provenientes torna o cenário narrativo menos orgânico e insuflado de premeditação na escolha dessas origens. O ponto que mais negativamente me marcou foi a aproximação entre o Holocausto e Chernobyl, em que se sente o recurso ao elemento emocional, indo depois mais longe, até ao simbólico (manequins). Este último ponto, do simbólico, metáforas figuradas, já vem de trás em Reis, parecendo ser uma marca que procura instituir nos seus textos, mas que é algo que não abona em favor da explicitude dos mesmos.

Dito tudo isto, o livro é mais, e se tem problemas tem tanto ou mais virtudes. Desde logo o personagem, que sofrendo ocasionalmente de alguma inverosimilidade, acaba por funcionar como uma âncora a que nos agarramos e não mais largamos até à última página do livro. A sua inocência e ingenuidade são absolutamente impressionantes, capazes de nos arrastar para o interior das nossas memórias de criança, e ver o mundo pelos olhos dele e nossos, porque Reis conseguiu encontrar o tom perfeito para potenciar a nossa empatia. Existe todo um desenhar de esperança frágil que concorre para nos dar a ver um mundo difícil sob tons menos hostis e que garante o nosso interesse e colagem contínua aos pensamentos da criança.

A narrativa está dividida em duas partes, uma primeira mais de contextualização em que nos é dado a conhecer o mundo daquela criança e os conflitos que a rodeiam, e uma segunda parte em que se enceta a aventura, que acaba por fazer valer todas as virtudes daquela criança. A sua inocência e esperança alimentam e propulsionam o sentido narrativo, muito alimentado pelo companheiro de viagem e pelas diferentes peripécias que vão tendo de enfrentar. Neste sentido, Twain tinha razão, as aventuras com amigos e os encontros fortuitos permitem dar a ver muito mais do interior das crianças, do que uma abordagem dostoyevskiana de entrar pela psicologia dos personagens adentro. O companheiro que segue com a criança, e os diferentes conflitos encontrados, funcionam literalmente como espelhos externos do interior da criança, e por isso vamos sentido que a conhecemos cada vez melhor com o progresso de toda essa segunda parte.

Tudo isto é servido por uma história que não tendo nada de muito original, nem muito particular, acaba por dar uma volta completa, fechando o círculo de sentidos, preenchendo por completo a nossa necessidade de significados. A criança cresce com o passar de páginas, e nós crescemos com ela, o mundo que era mais distante e alimentado pela ingenuidade, vai-se tornando mais real e consequente. Nada é fácil nesta nossa realidade, e se em criança a ausência de compreensão parece facilitar o atravessar e aceitar das dificuldades, nada nos garante que em adultos tenhamos atingido a plenitude da compreensão dessa realidade. Talvez o fundo da questão não assente na não compreensão, talvez o nosso problema em adultos seja antes o foco circunscrito aos problemas e conflitos, esquecendo tudo o que de bom existe em nosso redor, permitindo que o lado negativo acabe por toldar todo o lado positivo que a vida também contém.

5🌟 Que livro absolutamente maravilhoso! Um livro da vida, sem dúvida. Foi a minha estreia com João Reis e agora vou ter que ler toda a obra do autor. Ainda estou a processar o quão boa foi esta leitura, esta história e estas personagens! Wow

Uma história simultaneamente triste e ternurenta, que nos mostra o amor, a amizade, a dedicação, a velhice, a doença, a fé... enfim, o mundo, pelos olhos de uma criança de dez anos, generosamente decidida a tudo para salvar a sua velha avó, doente terminal. Tudo relatado através de um discurso próprio de alguém que ainda é criança mas que, porém, se sente quase homenzinho, um discurso no qual os erros e confusões linguísticas caminham de mão dada com pensamentos elevados que vai absorvendo, e a inocência e a ingenuidade com um perceptível empenho e sentido de compromisso. Todas estas características bem doseadas, de forma inteligente, tornando a personagem absolutamente credível. Também as personagens secundárias estão bem caracterizadas e ajudam a dar colorido ao conjunto.
Uma leitura enternecedora (a fazer-me lembrar bastante Uma vida à sua frente) que fez eco no meu coração e me proporcionou algumas horas bastante prazerosas.
Foi a minha estreia com o autor e, por sinal, bastante auspiciosa.

Há livros que, mais do que nos tocam, apaixonam. Isso pode acontecer por variadas razões desde a qualidade da narrativa, o domínio do vocabulário ou as personagens inesquecíveis. A Avó e a Neve Russa tem tudo isso, mas não foram essas características que me deixaram rendida. Foi a familiaridade da história que me contou e a consequente viagem no tempo que me proporcionou.
A Avó e a Neve Russa é a história de uma avó - carinhosamente apelidada Babushka - que, sobrevivendo ao desastre de Chernobyl, descobre ter cancro do pulmão sem nunca ter fumado e do seu neto, mais novo, que tenta o possível e o impossível para a salvar. Tudo é narrado por este último que, não obstante a tenra idade de 10 anos, discorre, com grande sagacidade, sobre a doença da avó, os dias na escola, as loucuras do irmão e as suas amizades improváveis.
João Reis é um grande contador de histórias, daqueles que conseguem colocar em palavras, sentimentos que nem sempre nos permitimos ter. Tal como o pequeno narrador desta história, também eu fui criada pela minha avó. O amor, a esperança, a ternura e a ingenuidade estavam tão presentes no meu coração como no do pequeno “cidadão canadiano”. Debati-me, ao longo da narrativa, com lágrimas, mas também me rendi a muitos sorrisos. O humor está sempre presente. Por vezes, é cáustico e inapropriado, mas encheu-me sempre o coração. Porque os bons livros são assim.

Tenho pena que ao personagem principal desta história não lhe tenha sido atribuído um nome. A ausência de identidade pode ter um propósito simbólico, mas se assim for acho que o rapaz de menoridade desta história perde substancialmente massa corpórea, o mesmo que autenticidade . Prefiro então pensar que a simbologia não é para aqui chamada.
Este pequeno canadiano, com sangue da antiga união soviética a correr-lhe nas veias, tem algo que me faz lembrar o inesquecível Adrian M., um súbdito de Sua Majestade: a sensibilidade apurada, a compaixão e o espírito crítico. E uma grande dose de curiosidade, ingenuidade e intelectualidade. Ambos nos provocam o riso e a vontade de os sufocar com abraços.
A história desenvolve-se com o ritmo e o tempo certos. Prende o leitor logo de início. Gostei do humor provocado pelos deslizes linguísticos do narrador. Este aspeto e a sua interpretação 'filosófica' de alguns acontecimentos suavizam estas páginas. As outras personagens que giram à sua volta são o mundo inteiro e, num plano superior esta história é uma outra 'história' da nossa História.

Este livro fez-me lembrar o "Uma Vida à sua Frente", do Romain Gary. A história, dramática e comovente, tem também muitos momentos cómicos, pelo facto de ser contada por um narrador de 10 anos de idade, com toda a inocência que o faz confundir ornitólogos com oncólogos, e gulags com goulash. Fez-me lembrar as moscas javardeiras e as provas de aflição dos tempos em que as minhas filhas tinham mais ou menos esta idade, mas, felizmente, uma vida incomparavelmente melhor. Embora por vezes tenha tido a sensação de alguma incoerência no discurso do rapaz (que às vezes me parecia demasiadamente elaborado para a idade, outras vezes simples demais), sei que pode ter sido impressão minha, pois tenho a noção que não há duas crianças iguais (a começar pelas duas que tenho cá em casa). Gostei muito.

"Eu sei que sou novo e talvez não perceba bem todas estas coisas, embora o tente ao ler muitos livros e ao ouvir os ensinamentos dos mais velhos, que estão mais perto de morrer e, assim, de ser História." 💭

Que escrever de um livro que tem o narrador mais adorável de todos os tempos? Um miúdo que está sozinho no mundo, apesar de todos os adultos que existem à sua volta. Uma criança que é forçada a ser adulta, apesar de toda a ingenuidade que a caracteriza.

"A avó e a neve russa" retrata a relação entre um neto e a sua Babushka e é uma história familiar, que desperta memórias e nos leva de volta à infância.
É um livro muito ternurento, penso que todos os que já o leram concordam, em que amor, esperança, ingenuidade são palavras-chave nesta história.

O narrador e protagonista que afirma que "sofre dos sentimentos" é o miúdo mais adorável de sempre, que tenta usar palavras difíceis - como xenofilia, icónicos, acampamentos de concentração - apesar de não saber usá-las de forma correcta. Aqui vemos o mundo pelos olhos de uma criança, numa altura em que as palavras ainda não têm peso ou conotação.

Um livro para deixar o leitor com uma sensação de conforto e de paz e nos deixar com o coração quentinho. Intercala momentos mais tristes com cenas que nos fazem sorrir e adorei a caldeirada de humor (um tanto dark, adoro!), amor incondicional e a dor que é crescer que João Reis criou.

Porém (wink wink), este não é um livro lamechas ou que puxa à emoção, já que o autor foi mestre em escrever tudo nas entrelinhas

O livro é curtinho - tem pouco mais de 200 páginas - e esta é a única crítica que tenho a fazer ao João Reis: queria mais!

Sei que os outros livros do autor não são assim tão fofinhos, e por isso estou muito curiosa para os ler porque como alguns de vocês sabem eu não sou a maior fã de histórias fofinhas. Qual deve ser a minha próxima leitura de João Reis?

A Avó e a Neve Russa é o extraordinário relato, na primeira pessoa, da busca de um menino de 10 anos pela cura que poderá salvar a vida à sua avó, uma sobrevivente ao acidente nuclear de Chernobyl, emigrada no Canadá.

Ao contrário do que esperava, a minha parte preferida foi o acesso, sem reservas, à perspectiva directa desta criança. João Reis faz um extraordinário trabalho neste sentido, condimentando a narrativa com uma dose exacta de inocência e sabedora, coragem e esperança, humor e melancolia.

Relacionando-se com as mais diversas personagens, a curiosidade, interesse e genuína preocupação desta criança com os que o rodeiam e com o mundo em geral é visível em cada página do livro. É difícil não nos deixarmos encantar pelas suas palavras e raciocínios; é ainda mais difícil deixá-lo ficar para trás ao volver da última página.
