The book I am reviewing is “On the Devil’s Court” and is written by Carl Dueker and this book is more sports based with a little bit of family base pulled in with it.
This book takes place in present day Seattle. Joe Faust the main character moved from Boston to Seattle because of his dad's work and is not quite settled in yet in fact he feels out of place. He is big into basketball but did not make the varsity team, but still tries his hardest yet nothing is working until he makes a deal that mi

OK...I am not a "sports literature" guy...nor am I a basketball fan...but this book is really about engaging characters...and don't let the title fool you...it really ISN'T about a face off with Satan (I don't want to spoil...but a lot of what drives the book is paranoia and anxiety).

What I loved most about this book...and the reason I am giving it 5 stars...is because it is the BEST YA BOOK I HAVE READ TO DATE. Drugs? no! Rape? no! Swearing? no! (I'm not a prude...but I HATE IT that so many YA

On the Devil’s Court is a book written by Carl Deuker. It tells a story of a 17 year old boy named Joe Faust whom happens to be the grandson of a notorious legend about a scientist and his hunger for power. Joe loves to play basketball, attends a private school, and his dad is a world famous scientist. The setting of the book is in Seattle, Washington.
There are many reasons to like a book like this one, from basketball to the devil (which brings about mystery in how this ties into basketball) t

I am currently reading the book On Devil's Court by Carl Deuker. Where I am at in the book the son just moved to a new town and his father is letting him try a public school for once, this has always been his dream. He had made some new friends at the park who share the same love for basketball as he does. As the days pass he is always playing basketball at the park, improving so he can hopefully try out for the team. I really enjoy this book so far. The book really gives off The feeling of you ...more

Joe is beginning his Senior year in a new city. His Harvard Professor father has promised Joe that this year he can go to a regular public school instead of a fancy private school. Joe wants to play basketball in a competitive arena and feels public school offers better competition. He makes friends quickly with Ross, who plays for the public high school, by joining a pick-up game at the park. Ross is impressed with Joel's basketball ability. But when Ross becomes a bad influence on Joe, Joe's p ...more

Book review.

The book On the Devil’s Court is about a high school student about my age; his name is Joseph Faust. The story starts just shortly after his family moved from Boston to Washington. They moved because Joseph’s father was given a job at the University of Washington as the head of the Genetics department. Since his father was smart as a kid and is still very intelligent he wants his son to have a good education. So he sends his son to a private school, were

On The Devils Court by Carl Deuker, takes place on the devils court for Joe. Joe has never succeeded at anything until he made a deal with the devil. Everything has chenged for him. All of a sudden everything seems out of place and weird for him. Like he doesn't belong in his own body and as if he weren't doing the things he was doing. Joe is playing varsity basketball which he wished on doing but didn't think was possible. He use to be a C student and now he gets straight A's. He's also popula ...more

If you want a sports book with a bit of attitude then I recommend this book. It’s about a young boy who believes he isn’t good enough to play basketball in Seattle; so he turns to the devil for help by having him give his power for twenty-four games.

In my opinion the book needs a sequel. It left you wondering what happened after it ended. I’m a huge basketball fan; so I might find it more enjoyable then others, however, if you are only mode

The author's purpose in writing this book was to engross audiences in his version of a story that has been told over hundreds of years. The main plot to this book was Joe, the main character, sold his sole to the devil so that he could experience happiness and success for a short period of time. Of course, this success did not last for very long and he found out that working through a hard time is better and more effective than finding a short cut. This is the same story that has been told for a ...more

Joe, the main character of the novel frequently expresses qualities of determination and perseverance, however he is also very naïve, making some of his actions seem foolish to the reader. Joe desires nothing more than to be a basketball star and despite his lack of height and extreme athleticism, he still performs at a decent level of play by training hard and perfecting every part of his game to the best of his ability. His extreme determination is displayed most vividly during his training, i ...more

Key Issues: Some key issues are when Joe must move to Seattle and start all over. He must make new friends also decide whether to go to Emerson a private school, or Loyal High a public school. Another key issue is Joe doesn’t know whether to go to school for basketball or to focus on his education. His dad is a scientist and wants Joe to focus on education. Joe wants to focus on basketball. There is many more key issues some involve evil force.

The way I picked this book is I saw it on the shelf at the library and the title and cover looked interesting. This story takes place in Washington state in the Seattle area. The main character of the story is Joe. Joe is a senior in high school and is just moving to the area from the Boston area. Joe is having problems with his dad, his basketball abilities, and the struggle of moving to a new area and making new friends. But to fix all of this Joe regrettably makes a deal with the devil to giv ...more

The purpose of this book is to entertain readers about basketball, as well as the fears of moving to a new school. The main character in this book, Joe Faust, has a father who is successful in whatever he does, and he does not feel he is impressing his dad with his basketball talents. Many teenagers experience this, and many other things that happen in this book.

The theme of this book is not directly stated, but it is implied that the theme is that you can become talented at things that you wor

On the devil's court is a great book that always keeps you thinking. I never knew if his bet with the devil was fake or if it was real. This book explains the character's feelings really well and you feel like you are in the story. There is a lot of basketball action and suspenseful moments where you don't know what will happen next. Each of the characters has something different about them and are like real people.
On the Devil's Court is about a high school boy who really dreams about being a

The author’s purpose of this book was to entertain readers. This book is a combination of family, friends, school, and basketball. The main character, Joe Faust, has always tried to impress his father, even though they both haven’t always seen eye to eye. Moving to a new place, and going to a new school will be hard for Joe trying to make new friends, and especially good friends. I think many kids can relate to this book, because teenage years can be difficult at times.

On The Devils Court by Carl Deuker, the main character Joe Faust shows a variety of positive and negative traits. Throughout the book Joe shows that he has intelligence, and athletism. The downside is he lacks confidence and happiness. "My whole life is one short, boring story of mediocrity." (Deuker. pg 2). That's a statement from Joe that straight up says his life is boring and plain. If you're not enjoying life your obviously not happy. On a brighter side Joe says "Once in my room I stood be

I love the literary allusion to Goethe's Faust, which raises the question, "What would it take for you to sell your soul to the devil?" Throughout the story, the protagonist, Joe, deals with being the son of extraordinary people with high expectations. He feels he cannot fulfill these expectations because he is not artistic like his mother nor scientific like his father. One thing that Joe is great at is basketball.

In private schools, Joe was used to being the best ball player. When his family
