In 1994 I had a wonderful, extremely interesting trip to Malaysia but I still regret that I did not have time to visit Borneo. After reading Lau’s book I know that I never could have seen, and understood, what he saw and captured on black & white film in the period between 1959 and 1999. During that 40 + year period he was still able to document 15 remote, diverse, ethnic groups of the Sarawak and Sabah areas of Borneo. Much of what he saw, and worked to understand is starting to slip away as the attire, customs and ways of life have become somewhat modernized. This book is a look at those incredibly interesting ethnic cultures as they were before 1999.
