“Wild Miami” is a phenomenal work of scientific art! This book should be in everyone’s bookshelf regardless if you are a Miami native or not. This book is vital, important, educational and impressive. The four authors who brought this book together injected their knowledge and expertise for all things natural into this project and it paid off. The beginning of the book goes through the history of Florida followed by chapters that introduced the reader to the many state and national parks we have in our backyard. Some parks that grabbed my attention were Arch Creek Park, Simpson Park, A.D. Doug Barnes Park, Castellow Hammock Nature Preserve, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and of course our two resident NVP’s (National Valuable Player), Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park!
Afterwards, the book gets broken down into chapters delving into South Florida’s unique flora and fauna that are found in three different ecosystems within Miami. The categories are Terrestrial, Freshwater Wetlands and Coastal. The wealth of biological information I learned within these chapters enlightened my brain and it will enlighten yours too. We are all environmentalists at heart and we have to do our duty in reducing pollution, supporting our national parks and promote native species in our city. Let’s make a difference. Mangroves, seaweed and sea oats are our natural barriers to storms and coastal erosion and that’s just the beginning!

Friends of mine have been trying to convince me to visit them in Miami for a couple years now and so I took it as a sign when this Wild Miami book came up for review. Yes, even the universe wants me to visit Miami it seems. And after delving into the pages of this stunning, informative guide, I can see why.
Aside from a comprehensive overview of the local flora and fauna, I love that I also got a history lesson into the city and the authors also didn’t shy away from coastal crisis issues.
There are maps, trip suggestions and just a wealth of knowledge any visitor can benefit from. I dare say the people of Miami would find this book equally fascinating.
This has definitely added some destinations onto my Miami itinerary.

This was an amazing book! The pictures are beautiful and so vivid. The outline was well thought out and easy to follow. I found the information to be so useful and so interesting. There was complete info about animals and flora and land areas. I really wish that I had this book two years ago when I was in Miami. This gave some walk ideas and tour ideas that sound great. I would find this book to be very useful for an outdoor trip in the Miami area. Greatly impressed.
