Kirill and Arika run a trading wherry, braving the Blight to sail between the cities of the fenland nation of Vehn, trusting to the protection of the runes on the wherry when a Blight storm hits between harbours. The Blight dates back to the disastrous war with Akhavar, Vehn's continental neighbour. Ever since that time, there has been an uneasy peace between the countries, although Akhavar has had its own problems to deal with. Kirill and Arika don't think much about the past; they've got their hands full enough dealing with the present, with their two-year-old daughter and a succession of passengers, some more annoying than others. But their own histories are intimately entangled with their countries', and the long-delayed consequences of past decisions can't be evaded forever...

About the author

Morag Lewis is an author and comic artist who writes and draws fantasy stories, with occasional forays into science fiction and mystery. Her book Sun Fish Moon Fish won the Wishing Shelf Gold Award in 2012, and her short stories and comics have been commended in competitions such as the Yeovil Literary Prize and the Aeon Award. She is part of Sweatdrop Studios, a UK-based comic collaborative and independent publisher which has been producing comics for more than 15 years. She loves telling stories with and without pictures, and finds worldbuilding enormous fun as well as very distracting. I always enjoy this artist's work and this is no exception. I enjoyed the slow build-up of the couple's past and the quiet unease of the blight even before you learn of its devastation.
