An excellent addition to reading through the Gospel of Luke! I love John MacArthur’s Bible Studies. He is a sound theologian and his books are truly easy to relate and understand what the Bible is depicting in each chapter. Highly recommend all of his Bible studies!

This is mostly just a copy of the scriptures. There are a few small points in the margins about the scriptures and some good discussions questions along the way, but there is not much here to aid in the actual study of Luke. So I would say it is good for a small group discussion of the scriptures but not for a deep study.

I really liked that the Scriptures to be read were included in the text. I read this on my Kindle, often in a doctor's waiting room, so I appreciated not having to go to a separate Bible. One problem with the Kindle edition is that the comments about specific verses, words, and phrases often don't show up in the right place. Apparently in the print edition, the comments are to the side of the verses. However, in the Kindle edition, some are above and some are below the verses. The book could have been formatted differently so that the comments always came after the verses so they would be easier to read and understand in context of the Scripture. Another thing I liked was that cross-references were included, for example, Matthew's version of the same parable or Paul's commentary on a subject.

Short review: This is a bible study of the book of Luke. I think overall it is ok. It has the complete book of Luke and some comparison passages to other passages outside of Luke. The weakness is that there are some very clear theological biases in the text. MacArthur wants to synchronize Luke to the other gospels in a way that I do not believe is consistent with the text and also minimize the physicalness of Luke's gospel.

The content in the book of Luke is at the crux of Christianity, so it makes a study guide a daunting task. McArthur does an adequate job with some interesting insights and highlights. What makes it effective is that one studies and reads the Book of Luke. It is a life transforming storynif you take it to heart!
