In the second book of Nicole Warner's Three Times Blessed Series, Eadred and Anais navigate a politically charged future. Drawn together by forces they can't fathom, haunted by the requirements of honour and commitment, the two young royals persevere with their unconventional relationship. Continuing their story in this thrilling historical fantasy, duty takes Eadred and Anais closer to a destiny neither wants.

With her wedding to King Edmund imminent, Anais faces the heartbreaking reality of her new life.

Eadred, struggling to come to terms with a shocking loss, must overcome his shortcomings to become the leader and healer his country needs.

As arcane forces of good and evil jostle for supremacy, Eadred and Anais, all unknowing, are caught in the middle. Their friendship could be the one element to save everyone they love; or the choice that tears their world apart.

"Who can guess why the path of fate takes such unexpected turns, weaving our tales into something greater than ourselves? The way the present informs the past as much as it does the future, testing us with trials both dark and light, changing us in ways we can never foresee.
So it was for us. Forced to set aside childish dreams for duty's sake, our innocence torn asunder.
Look away if you have not the stomach for it. I would not blame you.
I only ask that you take solace. Our courage gave rise to the greatest part of us: our most precious hope and faith.
Remember always, this story is yours."

Wow. The second novel in this series didn’t disappoint. Again, I loved that the author didn’t gloss over the truth of how life would have been in such a time. This world is rather stacked up against females, the way the King changes her name just on his say so is one example. I can’t imagine ever living in such a way, but I loved that this book allowed me to experience it in such an enjoyable way, again immersing me fully.

Our two main protagonists face a difficult time. The fact she is to marry, and that there is no way out of it, is an obstacle beyond their ability to overcome. The fate of two kingdoms stand in the balance and I liked the way the author didn’t try to resolve the novel with some fairy tale ending in book 1 where the two could end up together. I wasn’t quite sure where this book would take them and maybe a part of me would have like some neat little resolution, but that would have drawn the story to a very fast close and I love it too much for that to happen. There is a heart to this story that is rooted in real-life situations and as someone who enjoys historical fiction, I loved that it didn’t divert from what would have happened were this a real situation set some three hundred to four hundred years in some European civilization. Yes, women were married off to older men at terribly young ages and yes, if they went against their parent’s wishes and defied the marriage, there were often incomprehensible consequences. And quite often, their husbands were philandering monsters! No wonder Anais can’t stop thinking about Eadred.

If I was going to come up with an impossible romance scenario, this would definitely be it and I haven’t come across many writers who are willing to take that gamble. There is no love triangle to be found here but a sometimes-heartbreaking story of two people who are clearly destined to be together but with a huge number of obstacles stacked against them. I’m in for the long haul as Eadred and Anais’s story unfolds.

And I haven’t yet mentioned the fantasy side of it, the way further details are teased out and I can begin to see that there is a lot more to be revealed. The ending took away my breath and their final conversation when they are brought together through magical means was filled with such undercurrents it revealed such a heartbreaking truth. And then the way it ends! I didn’t see it coming at all. So again, this author leaves me wanting more! Highly recommend this to anyone who loves to read a series of books with action, romance, fantasy and sometimes gritty realism. I’m looking forward to reading book 3.

Sensational follow up to the first instalment.
'Invocation' begins directly after the events of 'Grace' and continues building in an ever growing fantasy world carefully crafted by the author. The introduction of new characters is done in a manner that never burdens or overcrowds the core of the story and proves to broaden the expanse of the rich fantasy environment. The novel is written elegantly and vividly; with sentences such as "Breathless and dizzy, cloudy blackness clawed consciousness aside with greedy, consuming fingers" stimulating evocative imagery that is truly authentic and a pleasure to read. The book is thoroughly enjoyable front to back and cleverly sets up for another instalment in the colourful universe the novels take place in.

This second book in the Three Times Blessed series will leave you with just enough knowledge to keep your interest in the story satisfied but also wanting desperately to know what happens next! The author brings together sentiments of love, suffering, duty and honour so carefully. Set within a beautifully created world, with all the pomp of a regal court, whose citizens hold close a religion which is as mysterious as some of the characters that dwell there. Will have to reread both of the first 2 books awaiting the third!
