If you’re ever at a casino and hear a great big roar, it’s probably coming from the craps table – you know, that long table covered in felt with words like COME, FIELD and PASS LINE, plus a bunch of numbers, on it. Nowhere but the craps table can you get up to 16 players (plus onlookers) screaming their lungs out about the outcome of a rolled pair of dice.
I received this book as a Christmas present from my dad, who loves playing the game. My younger brother does, too. Now I understand why. I know how to play blackjack and poker. But with craps, I was intimidated by all the jargon: “seven out!” “boxcars” “snake eyes” “Yo-leven” “all the hardways” “high/low” “Hop the 7” ... Um... what?
Well, this introductory book explained it all for me: the pass line, odds, come-out roll, proposition bets (i.e., long shot bets, where the house has a huge advantage), place bets, buy bets, etc. Besides the basic rules, it explains who the employees at the craps table are, where they’re positioned and what they do. That was very helpful.
Thanks to this book, and a few YouTube videos, I eventually built up the confidence to go to the craps table, throw down my money, and play. And guess what? I won a few bucks! I’ve since played over a dozen times. So far, my wins exceed my losses, mostly because of the advice in this book.
One of the great things about craps is that there are certain bets where the casino has minimal built-in advantage over the player. When you make certain bets, and you win, you’re paid off at the true odds of the chances of the dice rolling a certain way. That’s almost unheard of in most games of chance.
That’s one of the draws of the game. Others are: the camaraderie of the table (see above, with people cheering you on); the fact that you can shoot the dice yourself (and hence, feel you have some control over the outcome); and the possibility of getting in on a long shooting streak before a shooter “sevens out.”
Written in a serviceable prose, there are chapters on things like casino comps, cheating, and credit; there are many anecdotes from the author’s decades of gambling experience. And there’s a very entertaining story about him being a consultant on an old Matt Damon movie called The Big Town.
But mostly this is a bare bones manual about one of the most exciting games ever created.
So… DICE OUT! And get ready to play!

May 1, 2025Craps has always been one of the most thrilling casino games for me. The energy around the table, even online, is something else. I’ve found that sticking to basic bets like Pass Line and avoiding the complicated ones really helps manage my bankroll. Practicing strategies in demo mode first also gave me more confidence.
