The Barefoot Sisterhood #1

The Inn at Walker Beach

Rate this book
A dream years in the making becomes reality with the inaugural meeting of The Barefoot Sisterhood...

Jenna Wakefield has been through a lot in her twenty-seven years—losing her mother, becoming a teen mom, and battling depression, just to name a few. And working a dead-end job, barely paying her bills, and fighting unrequited feelings for her boss aren’t exactly part of the life she always imagined.

With her six children grown and her husband constantly traveling for work, Elise Griffin finds herself utterly without purpose for the first time ever at age sixty-three. But “retirement” isn’t as wonderful as it might sound—it gives her far too much time to think about the affair her husband had a year ago ... the one she’s never told anyone about.

When both women are invited into the mysterious Barefoot Sisterhood and asked to help restore an old beachside inn for a good cause, they find themselves supported and encouraged in new and exciting ways. This inspiration leads to dream seeking ... and new romance as well.

Discover what happens when women give each other the space to finally dream—and in doing so, make the world a better place.

I love women's fiction. I fell in love with this cover and I had to have a copy after seeing it.
This was a heart tugging read, yes, I had to get a box of tissues.
These two ladies friendship goes to show us no one is perfect yet we still love unconditionally.
I can't wait to get my hands on book two.
This is a 5 star must read. I HIGHLY recommend.

“Because she knew that forgiveness didn’t merely appear one day like a gift on her doorstep, all wrapped up neat with a pretty little bow. She had to fight for it. She had to choose it.”

I have enjoyed all of my adventures in Walker Beach but this inaugural book for the Barefoot Sisterhood series has to be my favorite so far. This new series is a spin-off from Walker Beach Romance series. And though it’s not necessary to read the previous series, reading them will definitely give you a better sense of the small tourist town and the people who make it so special. The book leans more toward clean women’s fiction than inspirational romance and so gracefully addresses the need for true forgiveness, second chances, and finding and being true to yourself.

I loved Elise and her broken, humiliated voice looking for a sense of purpose. Her surprisingly dramatic journey made me weep tears of empathy as she battled low self-esteem and knee-jerk reaction to please everyone. Jenna and her determined spunk - despite the weight of depression, anxiety, and regret dragging her down - made her a lovable heroine. I can’t wait for the next book as the renovated Barefoot Refuge opens its doors and Quinn takes center stage.

I received the book from the author and via JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

Oohh this one is giving me all the feels! After meeting Jenna in Lindsay's earlier book "All At Once" I really wanted Jenna to have her own story and HEA. This is that book! So I obviously loved that Jenna got her story told. I also love the premise of this new series about bringing together a group of women with scars in their pasts for friendship and restoring an old BnB to help battered women find a safe place. What an awesome idea for a series! In this book we meet a group of about seven women brought together to be a part of the Barefoot Sisterhood, and it focuses primarily on two of the women: Jenna and Elise. Their stories intertwine beautifully and make for a charming and sweet read as we get Jenna's story and Elise and her husband's story as well, all while working on restoring the BnB. A fantastic read! Can't wait for book two! I need it NOW!

I received this book as a member of the launch team and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

For me, there is always something powerful when women comes together, support each other and motivate each other to be what God planned for them to be. This series has that feel and promise and I'm excited to see where the author will take us.

This series follows on the Walker Bay Romance series. You don't have to read that series to enjoy this book, but, you will understand some of the struggles of the main characters and appreciate the growth.

Elise was a new character introduced (I don't remember her from the other series). First of all - raising sextuplets and not losing your mind! Her story was sweet, heartbreaking and filled with hope! Her struggles were real and I hope we see more of her and her reconciled relationship.

Jenna I liked from the Walker Bay Romance series, and totally loved her story and finding out her true worth and what is important. Cameron I adored and I enjoyed their friendship to more relationship.

I want to see more of Jules and the rest of the group.

Oh, this book was amazing! It tugged my emotions apart and slowly put them back together again in the best way. This is the first book in the new Barefoot Sisterhood series that is connected to the author’s Walker Beach Romance series. You can easily pick this book up and enjoy it if you haven’t read the other series, yet I am so glad that I did read that series this summer because it made returning to this community even more special to me.

I really felt the highs and lows of these characters as I read this story. There were moments that made my heart ache for both Elise and Jenna and there were moments that made my heart soar. These two women each had difficult decisions to make and they both had to determine what they wanted out of life, including what was most important to them. This was a powerful story and the author has set up the Barefoot Inn and the Barefoot Sisterhood as a great way to tell the stories of a wide variety of women. This novel is a beautiful combination of women’s fiction and romance. I am really looking forward to reading future books in this series.

First I am so glad this author has decided to continue with the Walker Beach characters. I really enjoyed that collection and the first in this series is no different, definitely enjoyable. We meet Jenna in the previous series and she definitely needed her story told. She has a unique journey. A teen mom, raising her son with the help of her sister. Feelings of unworthiness and depression dominate her at times. She seeks to find worth and be worthy often. I received a copy of this book from the author. All views stated are my own.

I’ve read all of Lindsay Harrel’s Walker Beach series and was sad when I thought it had ended. But she’s surprised us again and now we get a different series to read set in this wonderful quaint town of Walker Beach. It’s like coming home to visit friends and family. We know many of the other characters and love the wonderful setting. The beach and the laid-back pace of life in this coastal town.
Now, we are introduced to a whole different group of ladies and share with them their struggles and dreams.
This story focuses on two main storylines, but there are so many others that pop up and we know we will be hearing about them in the future.
One of the storylines I felt the author did a fantastic job with is the story of Elise. She’s an older woman who has some fairly deep self-issues and she questions whether she can be a help to these younger women when she feels her life is falling apart.
The other storyline was about a single mom who always feels like she’s failing those around her. She has dreams but feels she can’t reach for them because she’s caused too many others to have to give up their dreams.
The whole book is a story of women coming together to support each other and encourage each other to pursue their dreams.
Lindsay Harrel is an author I will go to whenever there’s a new book out. Her stories are rich with deep lessons of what God can and will do in our lives if we trust in Him. Her writing flows so well from the dialogue to the settings. The reader can get captured and taken to a place that is real and relatable.
To me, this is what makes a fantastic author. When a reader becomes so invested in the story they are reading, that they feel all that the characters are feeling.
This book is a sweet tale of family relations, friendships, tender love, heart desires, and a beautiful lesson of how God really does want to take our burdens, our dreams, and bless us more than we could imagine. It’s a story of finding a voice and a purpose.
I highly recommend you read this book! It's a sweet story that will touch your heart!
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I fell in love with Lindsay Harrel’s style of writing last year after reading The Joy of Falling. So, I knew I needed to read this book I saw it on preorder.

Lindsay Harrel has a unique voice and a creative way of expressing the relationships between friends. It is something I have come to expect from her books.

In this book I loved Elise and her background, it was so realistic, and easy for me to envision happening. The quotable moments were many and had so many applicable life moments.

I genuinely enjoyed this story, and I am looking forward to going back and reading the other books set in Walker Beach. 5 Stars.

If you enjoy women's fiction, you will not want to miss the new Barefoot Sisterhood series from Lindsay Harrel. In The Inn at Walker Beach, Jules Baker has invited a group of women to help her restore an old B&B. The women don't have anything in common except for the fact that they were on Jules' heart. Though some are quick to open up, others are more cautious. Each has talents and giftings that can bless the whole group... but only if they are brave enough to share.

We first met Jenna Wakefield in Harrel's Walker Beach Romance series, and though it's not necessary to read those first, it was really her story that made me want to read this one. Jenna was a teen mom who has struggled with depression and self-worth issues, and I wanted to see her blossom. With the encouragement of Jules and the other women, Jenna decides to go back to school. But will getting her degree open the right doors? Or have the desires of her heart been waiting in Walker Beach all along?

Elise Griffin is searching for meaning after her grandchildren start school. Her relationship with her husband has grown distant after forty years of marriage and a recent affair. Can she ever trust Charles? Does she even want to still be married to him? Looking for identity and healing, Elise doesn't know where to turn. Will the women of the Barefoot Sisterhood help her find her way?

I've heard many readers say they enjoy stories which involve more mature couples. Harrel does a great job with the relationship between Elise and Charles. I felt like the twists and turns were very real and relatable. I enjoyed all the different storylines and my interest is definitely piqued for more books to come in this series.

Note: This story was written for the general market, and I truly missed the inclusion of a faith aspect. Lindsay has written some of my favorite women's fiction over the past few years, including The Secrets of Paper and Ink and The Joy of Falling . Don't miss those as this new series rolls out.

I received my copy of the book from the author. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Wonderful story for fans of women's fiction! An uncommon sisterhood is formed as the dream of revitalizing an old inn for a wonderful cause comes into being. The women of the sisterhood carry their own secrets and burdens and slowly find the strength to dream again. I absolutely loved the premise of the Refuge at the Barefoot B&B. Ms. Harrel has penned one of her most endearing cast of characters yet, bringing some familiar characters from her Walker Beach series, but also some new.

Be prepared to have a box of tissues ready as Jenna's and Elise's separate stories will tug at your heart. The Inn at Walker Beach celebrates the power of friendship and family to overcome past mistakes, bringing all the warm cozy feelings of belonging, hope and love in a fictional small-town readers will want to return to again and again.

This is women’s fiction at its finest. Lindsay Harrel combines life with light-hearted and heart-rending moments in The Inn at Walker Beach, and it is an absolute delight to immerse yourself in this world.

This book is about living your dreams but accepting when they change. It’s about being vulnerable in your broken places and allowing others to come alongside you in the healing. It’s about friendships, family, falling in love (for the first time or all over again), rebuilding trust, and so much more.

The Inn at Walker Beach tells the stories of Jenna and Elise while introducing readers to the rest of the Barefoot Sisterhood. The moment I finished the book, I was ready for the next installment because these women have become friends I want to visit again.

I might have blitzed through the Walker Beach Romance series when they came out over the last year or so–so when I heard about “The Inn at Walker Beach,” I immediately jumped on it.

Every single book of Harrel’s is my favorite–every single book is better than the last! Just when I think it can’t be topped, she surprises me in the best way. I really think I mean it with this one (so just wait until book 2 comes out, eh?); it reminds me of Robin Jones Gunn’s “Haven Makers” series and even, to a degree, Sharon Garlough Brown’s “Sensible Shoes” books. The premise and characters drew me in; their diversity in all stages of life, and support of each other through varying struggles, encouraged me in my own walk alongside friends in difficult situations.

And, of course, having read the Walker Beach Romance series, of course I enjoyed seeing familiar characters! As the book summary notes, reading those first isn’t necessary–but I sure enjoyed it, and thought it lent depth to the read.

Harrel’s juggling of plot points, characters, multiple narratives, and more is admirable. She’s truly at the top of her game with this release! 5/5.

I received an eARC of the book from the author. All opinions are my own.

HEARTWARMING!

Author Lindsay Harrel has written another book set in Walker Springs and this one is truly heartwarming! Yes, she has an element of a love story (or several!) but there is so much more to this plot! This is the story involving the Barefoot Sisterhood. Several women receive invitations to a meeting of this Barefoot Sisterhood and when they show up, they are presented with an unbelievable plan for revitalizing the Walker Inn. It will take everything each of them has to offer as well as a whole lot more. Mainly, it will require the most of two of the most unlikely of them all. At least that is what the two of them think. In reality, each of them was created for their appointed tasks! This is a beautiful story of women supporting, encouraging, challenging and loving one another. It shows friendships that are tested and come out stronger and in some ways more like family. It shows relationships that are tested and proven to be worthy. It is a wonderfully heartwarming book!

I must say that Harrel has done a marvelous job with this book.
Her characters are simply so realistic that I felt like I was in the story with Elise and Jenna.
I think that Elise is my favorite character. Why? Because I feel just like her most of the time. Out in limbo, nowhere to fit in etc. I found myself rooting for her really I did.
There's some places in the book that will make you laugh, cry and want to hug these women simply for being who they are. To me, they are perfect example of our everyday heroes.
I love Harrel's style of writing! I'm always looking forward to seeing what she comes out with next!
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Oh I loved this story! It's not necessary to read the Walker Beach Romance series, but they are delightful, and you will find many of the inhabitants from Walker Beach make an appearance in this wonderful new women's fiction series The Barefoot Sisterhood by Lindsay Harrel. Several young women receive mysterious invitations to appear at a gathering by an unnamed hostess. This hostess has a sense about people and she provides a place for these women begin to find their purpose. She also invites Elise to join them and help organize a wonderful project they will all be involved in.

Elise, a 63 year old wife and mother of sextuplets, is struggling to find her self worth as a person, wife, and mother, in a marriage that seems to have fizzled out for one serious reason, and other distances that gradually happened over time.

Jenna, a 27 year old single mother that has fought hard to get a handle on her depression suddenly finds new doors open to her. How will that impact a new relationship? What does she really want?

One of my favorite quotes from this book:
"The world is a more beautiful place when each one of us brings our talents to it, when we pursue our passions."

Other wonderful quotes:
"How was she ever going to help other women conquer their problems if she kept ignoring her own?"
"It's not easy to look your past in the eyes and say, "You don't own me anymore," but that's exactly what you've done."
" No go and do what you do best. Love on people and remind them that they aren't alone."
"Oh, it always felt good to be together. Didn't matter how old her children were or how far away, she would always be their mother. Always worry about them. And things would always feel better when they were close."
"Every woman's life has a purpose, and every woman has a strength inside of her even if she doesn't know it."
"You aren't alone."

Lindsay Harrel has a unique gift to be able to get in the head of each character, no matter their age or situation, and portray each one in a totally authentic way. Her characters are real, their situations believable, and they are endearing! I find myself rooting for each one!

I highly recommend The Inn at Walker Beach and I cannot wait for more stories in this series!!

I loved this book, but more importantly I needed this book. I am closer to the age of Elise than of Jenna. And I think the story of Elise and Charles was an important reminder of how important communication and paying attention is in a marriage.
I loved the premise of this book
I loved the variety of the characters in this story and that there were so many hidden depths in them. And there is the promise of their stories to be revealed in future books. I’m all in for this series. Great job Lindsay!

My first time reading this author, and I am surprised she has not been on my radar. I loved the group of women working together to revitalize what will be the Barefoot B&B. Lots of feels and heart-tugging moments, but the sisterhood created by these characters makes this a must-read.

I really enjoy Fiction Romance books and this was a new to me author. The Inn at Walker Beach by Lindsay Harrel is Book 1 in the Barefoot Sisterhood Series.

I began reading it as soon as I got the book and did not stop until I was done. I really like the concept of "Sisterhoods" and this book is about 2 women who are a part of a larger Sisterhood Group. Elise and Jenna are the featured characters in this book. The setting is an old B&B that is needing to be restored. Elise is looking for something to do in life as her grandkids are going off to school and her 40yrs marriage is in turmoil due to a recent affair. Jenna was a teen mom who has been through a lot and suffers from depression. The 2 women are part of the crew renovating the Walker Inn.

The Friendship, Encouragement and and LOVE and Support of the Sisterhood is really remarkable. The Sisterhood is what helps Elise and Jenna be able to make some life altering decisions that they were both needing to make. Jenna's so young at 27 and going back to school became easy with the Sisterhood encouragement. Elise was able to make some changes to help her marriage. I cried, I laughed and fell in LOVE with the characters in this book. Women need the support and love of their Friends and this book really proved this still exist in todays world! I am excited to read future books in this series! GREAT BOOK!

If you’re looking for a read that has all the feelings, you’re in the right place!

Jules decides to carry out her friend’s dream of renovating The inn and create The Refuge, a place we’re women who escaped violent relationships can heal and learn new skills. The Sisterhood was formed to bring The Refuge to reality, and out of this wonderful group of woman relationships were formed, pasts were healed and families grew closer.

There are two main storylines, one for Jenna, a single Mom and Cameron, her boss. Another for Elise and Charles, parents of six adult children and who have been experiencing troubles of their own. Relationships are hard, no matter the age, and decisions have consequences. These consequences can bring people closer or lead to heartbreak. Which will it be? I don’t write spoilers, so you’ll want to read this to find out.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

This was my first read by Lindsay Harrel and I cannot wait to read the next book in this series as well as some of her backlist. This book was engaging and tackled some hard topics like the importance of mental health. I appreciate the author working through real-life issues in the characters’ lives.

I did have some trouble keeping the supporting characters straight at the beginning of the book but I think that is because I hadn’t read any of the Walker Beach series before this one. Harrel did provide some background on the characters that helped me sort out who was who before long.

I really enjoyed this opportunity to return to walker beach. I liked hearing jennas story and getting to know her better.
I've loved reading Lindsay Harrel's particular style in contemporary women's fiction, and this continuation of the Walker Beach stories was just what I was wanting to read!

I loved the characters, and especially enjoyed seeing life from Elise's viewpoint. Married for many years and still having things to work through, that's real life for ya....
And then there's Jenna, having gone through some hard things, even though she's still young, looking for a good cause, something to put her heart into.
Yes, this book is heartwarming, soul stirring, and an all-around good read.

If you love contemporary stories with a hint of romance, then be sure and read this one!

I look forward to reading more about this Barefoot Sisterhood!!

The Inn at Walker Beach was such a heart-warming story about the true meaning of friendships. In it an unlikely group of women of all ages and walks of life are invited to become a member of the Barefoot Sisterhood. Their purpose is to revitalize the old Walker Inn which will be an intimidating challenge.

I loved everything about this book! It was encouraging to witness the development of friendships among the women and seeing those caring women draw others out of their shells. Each and every one of them had a specific purpose designed for them by their maker. It was a true example of how parts of the body are meant to work together.

The author not only managed to bring this ragtag group of women together for a worthy purpose but she made me feel like a part of the group too. Such a beautiful illustration of following the dreams God gave you along with examples of restoration and emotional healing.

I highly recommend The Inn at Walker Beach and cannot wait to read the next installment of this fantastic series.

This was an emotionally satisfying story as we see two women in very different stages of life really come into their own and start to see their worth. I loved the romance for Jenna, falling in love with her boss and friend but also needing to work through her fears of failing and not measuring up. Elise's story was also good but I have a harder time reading stories about infidelity. She really wanted to make her marriage better so started to do the work of figuring out what was at the root of their problems and it was interesting to see that unpacked. There was a little bit of faith in the story and I loved the idea of a sisterhood who supported one another and helped each other achieve their dreams. And the setting of Walker Beach was just gorgeous. I'm excited for the next book in the series about the two more women from the sisterhood!

Author Lindsay Harrel pens an contemporary novel, set in the small tourist town of Walker Beach, where her Walker Beach Romance series took place. Although it is not necessary to read that series first, some of the characters make appearances in this new series.

In The Inn at Walker Beach, a diverse group of women are invited to become the Barefoot Sisterhood and help restore an old beachside inn which then would serve as a refuge for battered women. Each has been prayerfully chosen for this invitation: a teen mom now in her late twenties, a retired mom wondering what her purpose is now, and more.

Working together to physically restore the old inn leads to new friendships and inspiration for their dreams. The women themselves come from all stages of life and support one another in their struggles. They learn about doing life together as they remodel the inn and their lives are knit more closely together.

More women’s fiction than a romance, The Inn at Walker Beach has faith elements, memorable characters, and descriptive narratives. Throughout the book, one sees the themes of forgiveness, second chances, and being inspired to be who God called you to be. Harrel doesn’t shy away from hard topics: abuse, depression, marital affairs, etc. and does a wonderful job handling them sensitively. The second book, A Refuge by the Sea, is expected in August 2022.

Disclaimer: Book reviews are my honest opinion of books I either purchased or received free of cost from the publishers, publicists, and/or authors.

What a way to start a new series! I absolutely could not get enough of this beautiful story! Lindsay Harrel has such a way of creating beautiful characters that draw you into their lives, and The Inn at Walker Beach was an absolute prime example of that!

The first book in The Barefoot Sisterhood series focusses on single mom Jenna who has battled with depression for many years, as well as sixty-seven year old Elise who is searching for her new purpose now that her children are grown and she's in a new stage of life. These two women are at very different stage in their lives, but I must admit that there were parts of each of them I could relate to, and I think that this is something that women are definitely going to see throughout this series as well--- so many different women were introduced that they are likely to see themselves in bits and pieces throughout each of them. And while we may have only gotten glimpses at some of these other women so far, it was certainly enough to draw me in and have me wanting to know more about their stories too. Of course, I personally enjoyed the romance in the story too, but I definitely feel like even those who aren't particularly looking for a romance novel will be able to appreciate this story too. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series!

Oh, what a delightful women’s fiction read The Inn at Walker Beach was to tuck away into. It was cozy, heartwarming, inspiring, genuine, and feel-good, and simply a beautifully told story of friendship, forgiveness, and purpose. The author did a fantastic job creating genuine characters to root for and love coming alongside. Plus, the tiny, charming beach town it all took place in was like the icing on the cake. This one will have you grinning and laughing one minute, and tearing up the next. So be sure to have a box of tissues at the ready. I truly loved this book for how relatable and real it was, and it’s definitely one I will highly recommend! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author.
