If I could do half ratings, I’d give this book 3.5 stars.

This book is a set of 10 short stories where each story is encompassed in a single chapter. When I say short, I mean short as some of them are really only a few pages, and others are not really stories at all.

I think that the thing about Japanese graded readers is that there is a wide scale for what can be considered Intermediate. I read this with about N3 knowledge and found it far easier than I was expecting, powering through it in 2 days. The grammar and vocabulary felt like it was at the very beginning of intermediate, and that’s how I would pitch it to anyone wanting to read this book.

That said, the book was good practice and certainly helped to cement the words and grammar that I already knew just that little bit more. I also got to learn some new words in context, which is extremely valuable to anyone learning another language.

Similar to other graded readers, each chapter had select words that were in bold which were included in a glossary/dictionary a few pages later. Along with that, there was also a short summary (in Japanese then directly translated to English), as well as a set of questions about the contents of the chapter and answers.

If you’re at the upper end of intermediate and have experience reading other books in Japanese already then you might want to give this a miss. If, however, you’re looking to break into reading stories in Japanese and you’re not sure where to start, you should definitely give this a go.

Yey, that's a whole book in Japanese I've read. And it is superb!
I esspecialy liked a story called 肝試し. Did not expect this level of creepyness from a short story collection.

It was quite easy for my N4 level, so it's more beginning intermediate than really intermediate.

Don‘t know if I‘d call this an intermediate level book, I think it was pretty easy to read and I thought it‘d be a bit more challenging, but I enjoyed it a lot for what it was. To be honest, it wasn’t much more difficult than the beginners book. Anyway, quick, easy to grasp stories before going to bed to keep my Japanese up. They were really fun and feel very natural. Hope they‘ll release an ‚advanced‘ version, I‘d be happy to read that as well.

Overall I liked the book, the idea and the prepared vocabulary list. Lots of N3 vocab to see in context, with, generally, easy grammar and easy-to-follow short stories. Speaking about stories... well, I wasn't a fan of them at the beginning, but they were well written and, all in all, enjoyable to read.

The stories have nice quality, interesting and are easy to understand. Some of them are like bollywood movies. JLPT N4- N3 level students can easily read the book.

Quite a decent collection of stories. The translations of less common words were welcome. Completely appropriate for the N3 level, though maybe a bit basic at times.

Part of my JLPT N3 Japanese reading challenge 2024 - book 2

The chapters were easy to read at my intermediate level and include vocab lists and short quizzes as well.

Recommended for anyone wanting to get into reading beyond the most basic of Japanese.

However, it also made me decide to avoid anymore books intended for learners as it felt like a step backward from the first book of my challenge that was written for native young Japanese people in a more challenging and natural style. I'm going to stick to books in Japanese for Japanese people for the rest of my challenge.
