I just finished reading The Adventures of Lady Ellen Montagu trilogy. Despite a slow build at the beginning of Lady Ellen, it quickly pulled me in as the plot grew more complicated and intriguing.

It was sad when Lady Ellen was forced to choose between remaining on mainland Ireland and marrying Mr. Martin or being banished to the Aran Islands to live with her aunt. The life on Inis Mor really grew on me and I feel that Lady Ellen truly became one of “them”. Everyone on Inis Mor was so friendly and there were many humorous and romantic elements to these chapters. The book has a lot of adventure and danger, too, and some of the events left me feeling shocked and heartbroken for the characters.

Some of the highlights of Two Paths were how courageous Lady Ellen is in various instances. For example, she helps Sorley at the ball at Grady’s place, and she assists Adhamh during a traumatic incident as well. She shows compassion and doesn’t rest until she convinces others to do the right thing. At first, Cormac’s character seems stubborn and unflinching, but after a time, his character really grew on me. I thought he became more tolerant and loving of people. His relationship with Lady Ellen became nothing but respectful and loving. Their connection develops even more during Two Paths. The change in settings was captivating.

New London is also well written and shows a lot of research was done to ensure the facts are accurate. I like the mix of humour, sadness, and historical facts portrayed throughout the book. For example, some of the things Cormac does are quite humorous, which contrast with the more serious topics discussed. When Lady Ellen learns about the roles of women outside her own aristocratic station, it shows an innocence of the culture of the era. I like the idea that she’s naive, because people are too hardened, too young, nowadays. When everyone sets out to travel, it takes them a long time, but I am as delighted as they are when they reach their destination. In addition to the humour conveyed, this book also describes sad moments, too, which touches the reader deeply. A mysterious character emerges in the story that gives me a bad feeling, but I like the way Lady Ellen always protects her children and Mara. I like the idea of Lady Ellen experiencing confusion at times; it is realistically portrayed.

The Adventures of Lady Ellen Montagu is a thoroughly entertaining & enjoyable series from start to finish, and I give it five stars. Highly recommend.

Lady Ellen: The Adventures of Lady Ellen Montagu by Author J.G. MacLeod

Book I in Lady Ellen: The Adventures of Lady Ellen Montagu is my first encounter with Author J.G. Macleod and I doubt it will be my last. This historical romantic novel captured my attention from the first page to the last. It is well-researched, beautifully descriptive, and mesmerizing. It is very easy to envision each scene that is so vividly described. I consider it to be a fine work of literature.

The story of Lady Ellen and the challenges she faces is most enjoyable. Her father is less than admirable and banishes her to a remote island to live with her spinster Aunt Jacqueline for refusing to marry the man of his choice. Lady Ellen prefers to marry Cormac, the man she loves, rather than consent to her father's unreasonable request.

Grady is sent to pick up both her and Mara, her lady's maid, and cross the waters to the sparsely populated island where a simple life style exists. Grady plays a huge role in helping her adjust to her new and challenging situation. With many twists and turns, Lady Ellen is educated in life, love, rivalries, and near death experiences.

I hope to read Book II in this well-written series as Book I left me with an unsettling feeling between Grady and Lady Ellen. I know this lovely tale is left unfinished and there is much yet to unfold...

Immediately after reading Book 2 in this historic/romantic trilogy, I dove right into New London to continue reading the adventures of Lady Montague.

Cormac still agrees to marry Lady Ellen although she is expecting Grady's child. However, Cormac decides to move to Canada to open a new business and Lady Ellen, despite her reservations about travelling to a new and unknown destination, agrees to go along. While on the ship, she goes into labor and has an early and very difficult delivery. Lo and behold, and much to the surprise and chagrin of Cormac, Grady comes to the rescue and helps in the birth. Neither Cormac nor Lady Ellen were even aware that Grady was on the ship. Now, they are all making their way to start a new life in a foreign land which offers many unknown and rigorous challenges...

I must say that J.G. MacLeod is one talented author. Her work is both well-researched and well-written. I thoroughly enjoyed all three novels in this series and will continue to read her other works. Thank you for sharing your talent with all your readers!

Absolutely Amazing!
All three books kept me on the edge of my seat. I devoured them and was swept away on an emotional rollercoaster. This author is brilliant and really knows how to spin a tale. My favorite part of this series is the author defies the norm. This story is not a cliché. Prepare yourself for a wild ride!

Loved the story.
Sure thing, meantime I was getting angry and disagree with Lady Even, was very disappointed in her.
What proves that Author knows her work, because while reading I met different emotions and feelings, from sympathy and empathy to anger and hatred.

Lady Ellen Montagu is the daughter of the Duke of Manchester. Although there are issues in her aristocratic family, including her father’s gambling and risk of bankruptcy, she is who she was born. For her, titles and rules of decorum are important. That’s why she makes decisions that can seem illogical to modern people. But if you think deeper about the realities of the 19th century, you see a completely different picture.

It was fascinating to read about Lady Ellen’s adventures and her gradual transformation into a more balanced person. She doesn’t become a different person, and her transformation doesn’t happen overnight. Still, despite some things staying the same – things that are extremely difficult for any person to change in themselves – she gradually learns that there are things outside the rules of aristocratic society and adapts to a new lifestyle in another country.

“The Adventures of Lady Ellen Montagu: An Irish Historical Romance Trilogy” is set in Ireland and in Canada. The author draws such vivid pictures with her words that the places she describes in the books are now on my want-to-visit list.

Lady Ellen Trilogy

It was a pleasant surprise when I realised that I had acquired all three books at once but the surprise got better the more I read. A character Cormac Guinness based on a member of a real family was a bold move and giving him the title Lord Ardilaun thirty five years before the first Baton Ardilaun was created took a slight liberty with history but what a wonderful character as was the magnificent just Brady and the main person Lady Ellen herself. The descriptions of the small island, Ireland and Canada were breathtaking, all three books made me want to learn more of Guinness, Ireland, the potato famine in which the English behaved horribly and Irish folk music. These were three of the finest books I have read in recent years and I heartily recommend them.

I started out on Team Cormac; he is dashing, articulate, & appreciates Lady Ellen's personality. But then, I met Grady. When Ellen is banished, Grady fills a void. He also challenges her in ways she's not used to. She is definitely a strong woman, perhaps due to her father's abuse. I wonder if this is why she acts so hot and cold at times. I was surprised that I felt so passionately about Grady in the middle of the story, especially when I thought I wanted Ellen to marry Cormac. I won't spoil the plot, but the book is worth reading to the very end. Immigration to Canada provided completely new conflicts that I wasn't expecting, and also brought out new sides of all of the characters. The resolution is unexpectedly emotional, yet perfect!
