The GodWar is upon us. Nyarlathotep's plans are coming to fruition, the city of R'lyeh is rising, and Cthulhu is almost here. I'd say god help us all, but it's far too late for any of that.
For an arc titled GodWar, there's very little God Warring going on here. Lucifer and Sheriff Dirk return, as does Cy Morgan, and this volume's more about moving them into position for the final battles than actually having the final battles themselves. There's some action, yes, but it's a lot more posturing and things getting worse than anything actually coming to a head. It's all really more prelude than actual war.
That said, it's nice to see all the pieces coming together. All the characters and plot points from the previous three volumes are present and accounted for here, and I'm glad we're getting to see Nelson's plot come to fruition.
The artwork's also solid all the way through, since Mateus Santolouco is again present for this volume, though he only pencils issue 1. Mark Dos Santos pops in for the other three issues, and while they're not quite as detailed or possessing of as much depth as Santolouco's, his pencils are still a far cry from the confusing mess that plagued the first volume of this series so I'm calling it a win.
GodWar loses points for misrepresenting itself as the end of everything when really it's the penultimate stage of the story. The excitement is building, but it's a bit of a false start.

Moving pieces
Much like the 2nd book in the series, this feels more transitional as a story. Yes the plot moves forward, but mainly (and almost exclusively) in geography. The characters themselves don’t arc, which is a shame considering their potential.

Not gonna lie, I only read this as Hexed is in my top ten favourite comic series and this is where Lucifer was hatched. Did NOT disappoint. For anyone who loved Buffy or Supernatural or Charmed you will love this series. Nelson weaves super plots driven by interesting and funny characters that are easy to love and invest our time with. This series is a bit darker than Hexed but Definitely RECOMMEND!

This series continues to go down hill. It's been hampered all along by the poor drawing, but early on the story telling kept the ratings hire. Now, that's not even keeping it going. I'll finish it because I've come this far and because I enjoy Cthulhu stories. But that's pretty much the only thing keeping me going to the last installment at this point.

This volume had the unfortunate transition place in the series. Its ok, but the story slows, things aren't as interesting, things that were hidden are coming out in the open so a lot of the tension and creepiness are gone, and it all adds up to being the least interesting volume of the series.

Still enjoyable enough, but the title is somewhat misleading: it’s more about the eleventh-hour events before the Godwar. Nice to see the plans actually start to come into effect though, and it does a good job of showing just how insignificant humans are when faced with gods.

Plays out with the same feeling of dread and fascination I had while watching seasons 3, 4 and 5 of Supernatural. Really satisfying twists, and a great sweep through history to really show how inevitable all this was.
Our "heroes" are playing with a really small hand, and don't have a prayer against these awe-inspiring forces - and still they persevere, or at least resist their own damnation.
The great forces are really drawing the strings together into the fabric of a crazy outcome (at least to me, a Cthulhu novice).
I'm really impressed with Nelson's attention to detail, his ability to vividly draw the different personalities into something I can relate to (at least other than the purely evil ones). And for the pure evil personas, they feel rich or at minimum original - as in "I didn't just read that same character with a different name in ten other books".
I will continue to lament the art - not that the different artists aren't reasonably talented in their own way, but that it's pretty obvious they're being brought in not because their style fits a few pages or a chapter, but because they're able to deliver product when a previous artist fell down. -1 star for that sad circumstance (and the jarring quality it creates in the storytelling).

Continuing on now...these 5 comics are the first ones where the "subtitle" was prominently part of the title. (Prior, "The Fugue", "The Gathering" and "The Gray Man" all were inside the cover). It's just a continuation of the whole story of the Fall of Cthulhu though. Now things pick up the pace as both protagonists and antagonists race to R'lyeh....
Some highlights:
1) The trip to Miskatonic where 3 professors grill Lucifer about how she managed to get one of the Harlot's boxes out of the Dreamlands... "how did you avoid the Carter Effect?" one asks. Priceless!
2) Cy's obsession with being back in a box
3) The fight between Nodens and Nyarlathotep
4) Sheriff's Dirk's response when Cthulhu appears... "click click click"

The Harlot released CY from one of her boxes, God War has descended upon Earth and Cthulhu is about to be awoken. It wasn't too bad except I didn't like the art work and the last issue in this volume.

Can humanity survive the coming war amongst the Ancient Ones? Maybe, but probably not still sane! Glad my library picked up the rest of these--fun.
