When I recently stumbled (just last night in fact, to be exact) across Régis Hautière's (et al) Sterben für die Freiheit: Sophie Scholl und Frauen des Widerstands as a Kindle download on Amazon (its German title basically states that Sophie Scholl and the other three women presented died as martyrs for freedom, and I guess for the German translation singling out Sophie Scholl's name does make a bit of sense, although the French original title indeed is considerably more general in scope, simply Femmes en Résistance, which in my opinion is actually much better and even considerably more truthful since there are four specific women depicted in this book and not just Sophie Scholl), I with interest downloaded the tome without having realised that Sterben für die Freiheit: Sophie Scholl und Frauen des Widerstands is actually a comic book, a graphic novel. For let's face it, I am not (and have never been) all that much a fan of most graphic novels, period, and especially a graphic novel on the horrors of WWII (and Nazi atrocities) really does not all that much appeal to me on a personal reading level. However, since I now had Sterben für die Freiheit: Sophie Scholl und Frauen des Widerstands on my Kindle, I decided that I might as well try perusing it to see, to discover if this here graphic novel would or could perhaps be more to my tastes than others I have read in the past and if I might even in fact enjoy and be enlightened by Sterben für die Freiheit: Sophie Scholl und Frauen des Widerstands.
And no, I am truly sorry to say that I still am not really all that much (if at all) enamoured of the graphic novel format and especially for such serious and heartbreaking themes as WWII and Naziism. For one (and this is an entirely personal quibble with which many might well and understandably disagree) I do most definitely find (and have found) reading about Amy Johnson's, Sophie Scholl's, Berty Albrecht's and Mila Racine's lives and tragic deaths a bit too much and annoyingly trivial in a comic book (graphic novel) type format. And for two, and yes even more important and frustrating for me, the font size of the printed words of Sterben für die Freiheit: Sophie Scholl und Frauen des Widerstands is so ridiculously minuscule on the Kindle that I have had massive troubles even being able to adequately read Régis Hautiére's (translated) text, so much so that I often had to make use of a magnifying glass (and with subsequent anger ended up simply skimming and then finally giving up and for the most part just concentrating on the indeed excellent supplemental historical knowledge provided, although that the information and details on Amy Johnson, Sophie Scholl, Berty Albrecht and Mila Racine are ALL presented without any type of supplemental notes, without sources or bibliographical suggestions for further reading, that is so annoying I really cannot give more than one star for Sterben für die Freiheit: Sophie Scholl und Frauen des Widerstands, as the combination of graphic novel format and lack of proper, of adequate academic sources really does most massively rub me the wrong way, my joy of enlightenment especially with regard to the the two women with whom I am not familiar, Mila Racine and Amy Johnson, quite in every way notwithstanding).

Alfa yayınlarından çok iyi bir çizgi roman daha. Güzel bir eseri bulup dilimize kazandırmışlar. Çok teşekkürler.
Çizgi romandan çok bir tür biyografi tarihi roman tadındaydı. Savaş zamanı kahramanlıklarıyla tarihe adlarını yazdırmış dört kadının öyküsünü okuyoruz. Bir de kadın bir alman ajanının, karakterinin değişimini görüyoruz.
Enfes diyebileceğim bir gerçek hayat öyküsü. Okunmalı o zamanlara gidip, bu insanları okumalı.

Çizimler ve konu güzeldi.

Des dessins précis et sublimes (rien que les couvertures, avec les regards pleins de conviction portés au loin, de chacun de ces 4 tomes mériteraient d'être des posters !), des scènes marquantes (par exemple le jetage de tracts de Sophie Sholl quand son frère la retient, puis son entrée dans la salle de guillotine), et la découverte de personnages de résistance inconnus (du grand public), font de cette série une idée magnifique et une réussite plus que totale.

Me niego rotundamente a seguir con este cómic. A pesar de que el tema me encanta y me parece tremendamente interesante, está desarrollado de una forma tremendamente aburrida e insulsa. Las dos estrellas son sin duda para el arte, las viñetas son una delicia.

Mir hat es sehr gut gefallen. Vor allem kannte ich bis auf Sophie Scholl die Frauen noch gar nicht und es war schön ihre Geschichte kennenzulernen.

Die Graphic Novel “Sterben für die Freiheit” vereint die Biographien von vier Frauen, die jede auf ihrer Art für die Freiheit gekämpft haben. Dabei dürften in Deutschland lediglich die britische Pilotin Amy Johnson (1903 – 1941) und die Widerstandskämpferin Sophie Scholl (1921 – 1943) bekannt sein. Die engagierte Frauenrechtlerin Berty Albrecht (1893 – 1943) und die jüdische Widerstandskämpferin Mila Racine (1921 – 1945) genießen hingegen in Frankreich ein hohes Ansehen, so dass diese Graphic Novel sich sehr gut eignet, auch die Taten dieser Frauen hervorzuheben.
Vier Geschichten
Emmanuelle Polack hat zusammen mit den beiden Autoren Régis Hautière und Francis Laboutique eine fiktive Rahmenhandlung verfasst, um diese Biographien miteinander in Verbindung zu bringen. Diese Rahmenhandlung ist nicht nur schmuckes Beiwerk, sondern bietet auch die Möglichkeit, genau dann künstlerische Freiheiten in die Biographien einfließen zu lassen, wo Historiker keine gesicherten Erkenntnisse haben.
Die vier Biographien bleiben zwar dicht an der bekannten Wahrheit, aber es fließen immer wieder Details fiktiver Natur ein. Sehr gut in diesem Zusammenhang ist die Zusammenfassung der jeweiligen Biographien am Ende eines jeden Abschnitts, um dem interessierten Leser die wahren Hintergründe aufzuzeigen.
Eine weitere Besonderheit dieser Graphic Novel ist sicherlich die Optik, für die jeweils ein anderer Künstler verantwortlich ist. Besonders hervorheben möchte ich dabei die Zeichnungen von Marc Veber, die die Biographie von Sophie Scholl gezeichnet hat. Die realitätsnahen Zeichnungen sind eine Klasse für sich und es ist ein Augenschmaus, diese tragische Geschichte auf diese Weise mitzuerleben. Aber auch die anderen drei Künstler Pierre Wachs (Jamy), Ullcer (Berty) und Olivier Frasier (Mila) verstehen sehr eindetuig ihr Handwerk.
Fazit
Vier Frauen, vier Schicksale, vier unterschiedliche Stile. Mit der Graphic Novel “Sterben für die Freiheit” wird dem Ansehen und Wirken der vier Frauen auf ganz besondere Art und Weise gewürdigt und stellt in meinen Augen ein Kunstwerk gegen das Vergessen dar.

Très belle découverte, l'intégralité de 4 histoires, 4 portraits de femmes fortes et resistantes.
Je l'ai trouvé à la librairie du Jeu de Paumes à Paris. Le titres et la couverture à interpeller ma curiosité. Et je confirmes que ma curiosité à bien réagi.
Nous découvrons 4 femmes qui vivent sous l'occupation Nazi et sous la seconde guerre mondiale. 4 femmes que tout oppose, chacune à son combat, et chacune n'ont aucun liens entre elles. Le fil conducteur est une femme allemande, et son carnet que découvre Eve une femme française qui vient de perdre sa tante. Et à travers ce carnet notre héroïne va découvrir la vie sous l'occupation, mais surtout qui est son ancêtre.
Le fil conducteurs, le fond de l'histoire est possible, il n'y a pas d'anachronisme, ni même de contre sens historique.
On apprend beaucoup sur la résistance allemande face au nazisme et au totalitarisme. Un pan de l'histoire allemande que je ne connaissais pas trop.

À travers cette fiction, une jeune femme découvre un étrange carnet de notes noir légué par sa tante. Y sont inscrites les notes prises par une espionne allemande sur 4 missions durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
Au fur et à mesure, Anna, notre espionne, découvre des femmes qui se battent pour la liberté.
La célèbre aviatrice britannique Amy Johnson, l’étudiante allemande Sophie Scholl, la française Berty Albrecht, bras droit de Frenay, et enfin la française Mila Racine, qui aide les enfants juifs à passer la frontière Suisse.
Chacune de ces femmes connaît un destin fatal, mais aucune n’a jamais baissé les bras, toujours animées par leurs convictions. Tant et si bien que notre espionne finit par ne plus savoir quel camp choisir.
Des graphismes différents pour chaque personnage, mais un seul et même fil directeur qui nous fait découvrir ces femmes, bien souvent disparues des mémoires.
