This is a good story about how the past affects our present and how hard it is to open up to love again. We follow the lives of three main characters, with one couple's initial encounter being a few hours of wondering if they are ever going to see the next morning.

They were the last two to be evacuated because of the snowstorm but the snow lift is bouncing around perilously. Levi gets injured and while Jane is tending to him, things look grim as the gondola threatens to plummet to the ground far below. So, Levi calls his family but before he can get a word in edgewise, his mother gets e the setup…

Long story short, Levi tells her she is his girlfriend, thinking if these are his last words, at least his mother will be happy that he was in a relationship. Did I mention that Levi and Jane only met in the gondola? Oh, and they both survive. Now Levi has to convince Jane to be his fake girlfriend, at least for a while.

the heart of the story…
The fun begins following Jane and Levi’s rescue. She’s fine but he suffered some head trauma and has an extended stay. Sunrise Cove is Levi’s hometown but he’s only recently returned for a temporary visit and his family is all over them. They provide many hilarious moments as they try to surreptitiously get to know Jane before his parents’ upcoming anniversary celebration, which she has to attend and deliver a command performance. Meanwhile, Levi shortly realizes that there’s a lot to like about Jane and he’s shifting from fake to real feelings. Jane comes from a trouble family background and doesn’t do relationships but is struggling to resist him. I loved how Levi got past her barriers and his family inadvertently helped because of their nosiness. It’s not all lightness, though, as Jane has to come to terms with her grandfather and their fractured relationship, overwhelmed by all that entails.

the narration…
I’m used to witty banter and humor in any Shalvis novel and the narrator nailed it! The pacing was perfect and I particularly loved her interpretation of Levi, capturing his wry humor that’s touched with warmth and kindness. It was a wonderful performance.

the bottom line…
It’s been a while since I read the author but it didn’t take long for me to be reminded why she’s one of my favorites and an auto read. Jane and Levi have a lot of depth to balance the humor and airiness of the story. I also loved the secondary storyline involving Charlotte Dixon and Mateo Moreno, both doctors and she with a history that is crippling her ability to be in a committed relationship. Both are connected to Jane and Levi so it all felt intimate. I really enjoyed my time in Sunrise Cove and am eager to continue the series. It’s good to be back in Shalvis land.

Thank you to Headline Press for sending me an e-arc of this book. Honestly, I hadn't even heard of The Family You Make, it wasn't even on my radar. In fact, I hadn't even heard of Jill Shalvis. However, that has now changed. Something I didn't see coming, this being my first five star read of the year.
Outstanding! I loved everything about this book. The writing is fantastic, I've gone ahead and bought 3 more of Jill's books, and I'd love to read more of her backlist. The characters, ALL OF THEM ...more

I’ve always believed that family is what you make of it, thus the new series by Jill Shalvis, The Family You Make, struck a chord with me.

My 2022 reading started off spectacularly with Jill Shalvis doing what she does best and that’s delivering the perfect read. The start of the new Sunrise Cove series offered up everything I want in my contemporary romance. Likeable but flawed characters, a funny dog, family shenanigans, a cute kid and a snooty cat.

I went into the book with fairly high expectations and this story lived up to every one of them. I got the heartwarming romance that I had hoped for along with a wonderful cast of characters that came alive on the page.

This book opens with a pretty intense scene. Jane and Levi are on a gondola during a storm when things go wrong and the one in front of theirs falls to the ground. Things don’t look good for the pair and Levi places a call to his mother hoping to talk to her one last time but instead ends up telling her that Jane is his girlfriend just to make her happy. What a great way to start a story! These two bonded right away because of the situation that they survived and I felt like they seemed perfect for each other from the start.

I fell in love with Jane and Levi right away. They both had some issues to deal with and I enjoyed watching each of them work through everything. They had fantastic chemistry together and the only real obstacle to a relationship was their own fear. Add a little fake dating into the mix and I knew that I would get the happily ever after that I craved. The secondary characters were equally wonderful. Jane’s friend Charlotte has been her rock but she had her own issues to deal with. Levi’s family was just a lot of fun. They were not perfect but you could tell that they cared for each other and only wanted the best for Levi. I really appreciated the fact that we were treated to a secondary romance and I loved being able to see both couples find happiness together.

I would highly recommend this book to others. I found this to be a wonderfully written story featuring characters that were easy to fall for. I cannot wait to read more of this amazing author’s work.

I love the start of a new series. So much to look forward to in Shalvis' books. Alway the hot male character and so much emotions all the feels.
The Family you Make made me long for a family. I was sucked in from the very first page. You won't be able to put it down once you start it.

Picture this, you're near beautiful Lake Tahoe, a blizzard is taking place and the ski lift you're in loses power so you're stranded in it with a handsome man and he's reassuring you the crazily rocking with the high wind car isn't going to have the cable snap on it.

The Family You Make by Jill Shalvis Enjoyable romantic story with two couples, Levi and Jane and Mateo and Charlotte. Both couples are perfect for each other, they just have to overcome personal past issues to trust their feelings. The Family You Make had joy, heartache, laughter and hope laced throughout the pages. With a story that was filled with richness and depth, intricate characters and a happily ever after, this book had it all. She didn't want to react to his statement, but she honestly couldn't remember when anyone had done such a thing for her, stranger or otherwise.

The beginning of this story had me glued to every single word. As someone who snowboards on the weekends and lives in the Lake Tahoe area where this story takes place I now have a new fear of gondolas LOL! But the beginning completely pulled me in and I was obsessed. With Jane and Levi finding themselves in a life or death situation on a gondola, I was beyond nervous for them. And even injured, Levi tried to crack jokes and I couldn't stop smiling. So when Levi called his family to say goodbye, he couldn't do it. He told them instead that he was finally happy and had a girlfriend named Jane. But then Jane and Levi ended up surviving, and their lives would never be the same again.

His laugh floated down to her. “Thoughts you weren’t afraid of anything.”
Turned out, she was afraid of plenty, including how just looking at him could change the rhythm of her heart.

Jane was the queen of running. She didn't ever stick around long enough to form attachments, or for her to be told she wasn't wanted anymore. Which suited her perfectly because that was how her childhood went. She was shuffled from one place to the next and it hardened her heart. So going into this story, I'm so glad Sam @ WLABB told me to have patience with Jane. Because she desperately needed that from not only those in her life, but from us the reader too. Her past had damaged her, and she didn't see herself worthy in others eyes. Her walls were impossibly high. But as the story started to unfold, Jane realized that others did care for her, and want her in their lives. That she had formed friendships with Charlotte, Cat and even Levi. She just wasn't sure what to do with that, especially when it came to Levi.

"Maybe another time."
"Why?"
"You're not ready."
And then he walked off. She found herself watching him go. "When will I be ready?"
He turned and caught her staring at his ass, and the smile hit his mouth. "Maybe sooner than I thought."

I loved Levi right away. Even when he was fighting for consciousness in the beginning, he cracked me up. He was so charming, but like Jane, he also felt alone. Levi was different from his family. Even though they loved him deeply, he hadn't ever fit in. And with a heartache past, he tried to distance himself from those that cared for him. So Levi had a lot of healing to do too. But being back in Sunrise Cove, he started to find life again and mend relationships with his mom, dad, sister and even an old best friend. I loved every single thing about Levi. He was patient, kind, sweet, caring, thoughtful and considerate. Sigh.

She put her hands on her cheeks. "Are you always such a flirt?"
"No."
"So why me?"
He smiled at her. "Because when I'm with you, I feel like . . . me."
Everything inside her softened at that.

I couldn't stop smiling when Levi and Jane were together. They were both outcasts in a way, and understood one other. And with a life or death situation pushing them to a friendship, I loved watching how they progressed. They were comfortable around each other and it all felt so seamless. So when they continued “dating”, to keep up the lie to Levi’s family, I absolutely loved it! Throw in Levi's in your face family that pulled some funny antics, and friends that cared deeply for them, this story rounded out so well. There was a side story about Jane's good friend, Charlotte, who she stayed with when she was in Tahoe. And their neighbor/coworker Mateo, who had a tie into Levi's life. I absolutely loved their story too and was rooting for them to have a HEA since we got a few povs from them also.

"This is just a kiss," she informed him, her voice annoyingly soft and breathy.
This had him laughing softly against her as he nibbled her lower lip, then sucked it into his mouth. Someone gasped. Her. Dammit.

Redemption in yourself comes in so many forms. Whether it was Levi, Jane to even Charlotte, they all needed that desperately. The Family You Make showed their emotional path to healing, friendship and love. This story was an emotional journey, I cried multiple times, and it took some longer than others to get there. But it ended with a fabulous epilogue years in the future and I closed the book oh so happy. I just love happily ever afters, and this book too!

She lifted her head again, suddenly having trouble drawing air into her lungs. "But you promised. You promised not to fall for me."
His gaze met hers, his own warm and loving. "Some promises are meant to be broken."

PS The peaches…..I was dying laughing and had tears pouring down my face. Peyton, Levi’s niece, is the cutest!

Once again Shalvis delivers a sweet, lovable story. Jane and Levi need each other almost as much as Charlotte and Mateo. Throw in a zany family, complete with a temperamental cat and capricious six year old and it’s pure warmth in Sunshine Cove. I’ve never read a Shalvis book I didn’t like. They have an instant attraction and then the near death incident where Jane saves Ivey’s life adds to their connection.

The secondary couple is Charolette and Mateo both doctors at the local hospital. They’ve worked together and been neighbors for a few years. They have been fighting their attraction for a while, well Charolette is the one really fighting. Mateo continues to flirt and ask her out. They both know Jane because she’s a nurse and when she returns to Sunrise Cove every winter season she rents a room from Charolette.

Levi and Mateo are best friends from school but have lost touch over the last couple of years due to Levi leaving home to start his business in San Francisco. Oh and Levi was engaged to Mateo’s sister but after she died, Levi couldn’t face Mateo and his family so he cut off their friendship out of guilt.

The Family You Make is a great story of friends supporting each other while they try to navigate through some family issues. Both romances, Levi/Jane and Charolette/Mateo are sweet, fun and sexy. I really enjoyed sees them all get the HEA they all deserved even if at times they didn’t think they deserved it. Levi’s family were great supporting characters and brought some comedic relief.

After reading the summary for the next novel, The Friendship Pact, I feel very confident that the Sunrise Cove series will be a set of stand alone stories with only the setting as the connection, much like Shalvis’s Wildstone series. ...more
