Cornwall Misfits Curiosities and Legends: A Collection of Short Stories
Cornwall: Misfits, Curiosities and Legends
sparkles with surprises and entertainment. Action shifts between land and sea; locals and newcomers; from times past to times beyond time.
This anthology has a rich variety of stories - of different genres, time periods and moods. No single story gives any clue to the next. The stories weave together as contrasts: each enhances and is enhanced by those around it. Beginning with an engaging holiday read set in Cornwall, the collection ends with a place in Cornwall waiting for someone to visit and love it. There are ebbs and flows, surprises and entertainment throughout.
The ideas and words for our theme have many meanings and creative angles. Our aim is to provoke curiosity in whoever picks up the book.
Words can suggest particular genres, so we voted on three favourites that combine into a theme open to a wide interpretation. The theme became the title - Cornwall: Misfits, Curiosities and Legends.
The Cornwall Writers Short Story Project is a community of writerly friends committed to honing their writing and editing skills and learning how to publish, market and sell books. This project began in January 2019 and has taken 18 months to complete. The contributors have had the pleasure of seeing each other's stories develop and grow into the works contained in this book.

3 books2 followersT J Dockree's first novel, The Chart Makers Daughter: Timeline 67, is inspired by the shipwreck of the schooner Voorspoed and the rescue of its crew on Perranporth beach in 1901. The novel creates a fictional journey for a fictional crew, including a woman and a girl escaping from Amsterdam, and their adventures with Cornish residents they meet: Padraig the Irish railway worker who also cares for the pit ponies, Lad (still to be named!) the asthmatic son of a miner and a local archaeologist helping at the dig at St Pirans Oratory. She wrote the first zero story draft in November 2017 during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). She has since drafted other novels during NaNoWriMo: The Dream Walker, Bait, Mine The Light and Leviathan. She’s now editing those zero drafts and hopes to publish The Chart Makers Daughter: Timeline 67 sometime during 2024/25.
Her poem The Maiden won first prize at Poetry Today – Beyond the Horizon in 1997. Since then she has had several other poems published in collections with other poets.
Tracey loves encouraging others on their writing journey. She is regional co-ordinator for Cornwall for NaNoWriMo and regularly meets up with other writers in Cornwall throughout the rest of the year. She set up Cornwall Writers and their short story project, producing 2 anthologies with other Cornish writers and currently working on a third to be published in the spring of 2024.
Two of her short stories appear in the Cornish anthology Cornwall: Misfits, Curiosities and Legends – Little Bear and Knights on a Train. She also has two stories in the anthology Cornwall Secret and Hidden – Slagoon’s Breath and Pure of Heart.
Her day jobs are editor for Ethical Rebel magazine and ethical fashion and costume designer as Tracey Dockree. She is based in Truro in Cornwall.

This Anthology combines all sorts of storytelling in the one book, with the spirit of Cornwall infusing each piece. It moves from moor to coast, from past to future and covers a multitude of genres including historical, fantasy, romance, magic realism and sci fi. Additionally, there is poetry and a script alongside the short stories and with such a wide variety of styles, I defy any reader not to be able to find a piece that resonates with them. Cornish history and mythology are bought to life, illustrated and built upon and I greatly enjoyed reading this anthology from a group of writers whose love of Cornwall shines through their work.

As i live in Cornwall i loved this book. It's full of inspirational stories, set in Cornwall by a talented few Cornish writers. Loved it!
