Linda Winstead Jones is the bestselling author of more than eighty romance novels and novellas across several sub-genres. She’s easily distracted (Look! A squirrel!) and writes the stories that speak to her in the moment. Paranormal. Romantic Suspense. Twisted Fairy Tales. Cowboys. Her books are for readers who want to escape from reality for a while, who don’t mind the occasional trip into another world for a laugh, a chill, the occasional heartwarming tear. Where will we go next?
Clint's Wild ride is about the youngest Sinclair brother. The most laid-back and easy going one.
Clint Sinclair was a rodeo champ, after he had an accident he became a ranch owner and rodeo clown(bull-fighter). Clint is easy going and loves his family but is not sure about commitment, he thought he was ready four years ago but after his accident his fiancee ran out on him. When his sister asks him for a favor he can't refuse. The favor train FBI agent Mary Paris to be a rodeo clown. Clint agrees but he has conditions and will take the final decision.
Mary is the opposite of Clint in every way. She doesn't let her hair down and is too serious and not at all trusting. Her mother walked out on them and her husband died, since then her work is all she has got and depends on. The case of a killer in the rodeo is personal to her, her friend was a victim. So she puts up with the training, sometimes stubbornly not accepting her limitations. She comes to like Clint and tells him why is he so perfect that ends in a kiss.
When they are about to end up together, an honest Clint tells her that she is not ready to be a clown, Mary is angry but the next day apologizes and decides to come in a different capacity.
I enjoyed the book but never really warmed up to Mary that much, she was very prickly. Clint gets them adjoining rooms and tries to keep an eye on her but she doesn't like this. He sees through her and her attempts to be bait. Even after things get intimate between them she puts a stop since it is interfering with what she is doing. Clint on his part continues to protect her. I don't know but Mary kept on putting barriers.
In the end though I did enjoy it when she threw herself over him to save him. They talk about how different their lives are and how things would work out long term. Not my favorite Sinclair Connection book though.
I enjoyed “Clint's Wild Ride” apparently first published in 2003. I found the main characters - undercover FBI agent Mary Paris and retired rodeo bronc rider, occasional rodeo “safety” clown, small town rancher Clint Sinclair - both determined, independent, capable and very likable (and I can be picky). The story kept my attention especially the rodeo aspect, read quickly, and by the end I hadn’t solved the suspect’s identity. I enjoy rereading books that somehow touch my heart, and I can see myself rereading this story again.
Clint’s “Wild Ride” was my 3rd Linda (Winstead) Jones book. I previously read her western “Running Wild”, which she Co-authored with Linda Howard, and her newest release, “Bigfoot and the Librarian,” a paranormal-shifter novel which I enjoyed very much. I’ve purchased a second book in this Sinclair series, and another from LWJs time-travel novels. I will be watching for her next release, as well; hopefully another book in her new paranormal series.
I recommend “Clint’s Wild Ride.” It was a quick and easy read for me, and sometimes that’s just what I want. It was positive (without excessive emotional angst) and a HEA. It did not have any offensive language; but there were a couple intimate bedroom scenes and SPOILER: a pregnancy resulting from 1 evening of unprotected sex at the end, so please be advise.
Setting: Brisco Rodeo and corresponding hotel rooms; ranch in north Alabama near Scotsboro; Shea’s home;
Theme: love, risk, protecting one another, strong vs weak, stopping a serial killer,
Characters: Clint Sinclair – part of a loving family… an all around good guy… successful bull rider until gored by a bull and his fiancé walked away when he decided he’d had enough… when his friend is hurt bull riding and almost loses his leg, and his woman stands by him, he buys the ranch he kinda dreamed of so that they had a place, making him foreman and her housekeeper… for last 3 years, he has spent 2 months in the Brisco Rodeo as a bullfighter/clown – challenging, fun… he likes to go where life takes him… and someday thinks he might find the right woman – still a bit protective of his heart after hurt by his fiancé… he has money from his rodeo days, his ranch, and from investments. Shea/Nick; Boone/Jayne; Dean; sister, brothers, spouses – Shea is a reporter, and she gets the family together to introduce Clint to Mary and to ask him a favor. She has been working on a story about a man convicted of a woman’s murder – and Mary goes to Shea to question her, and they became friends. Wes/Katie – foreman/housekeeper – in love, pregnant – Clint is building them a house on his property. Their presence allows him the freedom to move around the country, doing what pleases him. Mary Paris, Special Agent FBI aka Mary Mary Quite Contrary – strong spirited… loved her husband deeply but he died 2 years earlier, hit by a drunk driver – and she’s angry at the senselessness of it and that she couldn’t have protected him – and she’s emotionally numb, never expecting to find love again… she finds most men a nuisance, and has had to work hard to prove herself in the FBI… she was as close as she could be to her college friend Elaine – Elaine was blonde, pretty, but shy and reserved – and killed last year. While Mary was looking into it she tied clues together – 8 women (2 each summer, for last 4 years, in time and closeness to the Brisco Rodeo) blonde, 4 with missing gold earring, raped, slashed or strangled, retiring & not missed for a while, bodies hidden is remote locations – 2 men convicted of 1 of the murders each – FBI do not find the clues compelling enough to say it is a serial killer, so she takes a month vacation off to investigate herself… She wants to go in as part of the rodeo, and thinks being a bullfighter/clown is the ticket, so Shea asks Clint to tutor her and make the introduction to the Briscos. Oliver Brisco – owner of the rodeo… has a blonde, earring wearing, mean spirited ex wife and is Mary’s prime suspect. He is brusque with people. Brett Brisco – his nephew, the accountant for the rodeo, was sleeping with Kristin when she was married… when Kristin broke up with Oliver, she cruely told Brett he was worthless and terrible in the sack. Brett both loved and hated her. Summary: Mary and Clint spend 2 weeks at his ranch… Clint trains her hard hoping she’ll withdraw her request, but she keeps up with him… She rides a horse for the first time with him… but when he puts her in a pen with a bull, she is too hesitant… so he decides he can’t endorse her being a rodeo clown… At first she is bristly and resentful of his laid back attitude… but by the 2nd week, she’s warmed up to him – and they share a few kisses… She insists on going with him to the rodeo, and they compromise with her clowning it in the audience, making balloon animals and loopy lassos… and they get Oliver to agree… She is just there to gather evidence – so she keeps telling him, but Clint can see she fits the profile in looks (though not attitude) and suspects her of trying to pull the killer’s interest to her… He watches her as much as he can… they have sex a few times – and she is the one to initiate it (one time without a condom)… but then she pulls back… and on their way to the 2nd stop, after he had his brother look into her background, he finds out that she is doing this on her own and it infuriates him… when gold earrings are delivered to her in a brown bag, Clint gets his 2 brothers to come out to back them up… Clint agrees to ride a bull when Oliver is short riders and threatens to fire him otherwise – and Clint, knowing that mary would not leave, agrees… when he falls off the bull (after 8 seconds), and the bull is stomping, Mary rushes into the ring to try to protect him – and the crowd is very entertained… We get a glimpse into the killer’s mind – he is proud to be outsmarting the cops, convinced that they have not tied them all together… he thinks it would be worth it to take Mary, even though she’s a bit more high profile… but then Kristin shows up… and Oliver has sex with her (she’s bored)… and after the rodeo she goes with Brett to his trailer – and he loses his temper and kills her and puts her in the park until he can arrange to move her to a better place… but the body is found… Oliver is arrested… Brett approaches Mary at the end of the rodeo and when takes her… Clint is looking for her, and when he calls for her it distracts Brett, she knocks him on his butt, and Clint restrains him… They admit they love one another… not sure how it could work out… she goes back to Washington DC, he completes the rodeo… they talk on the phone a lot… he makes arrangement to move to Washington and buys a ring… she arrives with a frozen peach cobbler, a book on gardening, and a badge to work in local law enforcement – she’s staying – and they’re going to have a baby…. ahhhh
Memorable scenes: Watching a meteor shower at midnight, making out, and Clint stopping to admit that he was not letting her clown with the bulls before ‘going all the way’ – allowing her to pull away.

A bull rider turned rodeo clown. A FBI agent undercover as a rodeo clown, looking for a serial killer. Sparks seemed to fly as soon as Clint and Mary met. They continued to fly as they got closer to each other and the killer. Mary had a personal reason for wanting to catch the killer. Clint wanted to catch the killer to keep Mary safe. Terrific storyline, very well written. Kinda Jones is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. Bring on the next one....
