Doc Brady #4

Act of Negligence

Rate this book
Something unusual is going on with the dementia patients at Pleasant View Nursing Home.

Dr. Jim Bob Brady, Houston orthopedic surgeon and amateur sleuth, finds himself in the midst of a different type of medical mystery. His friend and colleague, Dr. James Morgenstern, refers him a series of dementia patients with orthopedic problems from Pleasant View Nursing Home. Each patient dies, irrespective of the treatment, a situation that Doc Brady is unaccustomed to.

Each death prompts an autopsy, performed by another Brady colleague, Dr. Jeff Clarke, who discovers unusual brain pathology in each patient. Some of the tissue samples show nerve regeneration, a finding unheard of in dementia patients.

Doc Brady, enraged by the loss of his patients and obsessively curious about the pathologic findings, begins to investigate the nursing home, as well as its owner and CEO, Dr. Theodore Frazier. This leads Brady and Clarke on an adventure to discover the happenings at Pleasant View—an adventure that sees them running for their lives.

Many thanks to Net Galley, FSB associates, and the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.

John Bishop MD, the author of this medical thriller Act Of Negligence was an orthopedic surgeon for 30 years and as such reading this story made me feel like a fly on the wall in Dr. Brady’s life. I had also checked the author’s website before reading and the book literally transported me to the world of medicine with the kind of effective writing and imagining the author himself as the character Dr. Brady. On that note, I think this is surely one for TV adaptation as an excellent medical series.

Medical thrillers are always a dicey option, some may work coz they don’t overburden the reader with too much information that may sound Greek and Latin to a casual reader but also provide the necessary facts that would authenticate the unfolding drama. In this, Dr. John has worked wonders, yes of course there are terms of orthopedics that went over my head but there’s a good balance that provides the easy acceptance of the info.

The mystery that surrounds the experiments on dementia patients was fantastic and the doctor has clearly used his experiences of a hospital culture in rendering the story. The villains are known beforehand but the painstaking effort by Dr. Brady and Dr. Jeff to get to the truth of the matter keeps the reader entertained till the action-packed end. The frustration of convincing insurance personnel of the necessity of admitting patients comes thru brilliantly. It was easy to empathize with the medical professionals when they are forced to offer treatment on the basis of being insured or not. The sexy relationship between Dr. Brady and his wife was exciting, conveying a feeling of warmth and coziness which also adds to the kind and loyal character of the protagonist.

Cuddly!

A Medical Thriller

Doc Brady book #4

Dr. Jim Brady, a Houston orthopedic surgeon and amateur sleuth finds himself in a medical mystery when a colleague of his from a Nursing Home refers dementia patients with orthopedic problems to his care, irrespective of the treatment each patient dies....Autopsies are performed that revealed unusual brain pathology...Unaccustomed to these findings, both Dr. Brady and Dr. Frazier, the pathologist, need to get at the bottom of this mystery.... Time for sleuthing.....and plunging us into one of those medical mysteries none of us would like to be involved in.....

Although this latest is part of a series it stands well on its own. The story is unique and captivating, along the way the author, a medical specialist, delves with minutia into the progress of Alzheimer’s and other dementia’s conditions. Actually he does that extensively, may be a bit too much for the average Jo like myself. But the mystery is so intense it is easy to overcome all the technical medical terms, move on and get into this cracking tale of mystery and suspense. I was riveted in this saga from start to finish omit its educational side let yourself be pulled into a fast-paced and exciting mystery who brings curious men on an adventure that sees them running for their lives.

This story is written with expertise and is played out by pleasant characters that are entertaining even the evil guys. This drama captured my attention.... could this really happen? Do doctors experiment on dementia patients supposedly for their good....scary...

Well-said

My thanks to Mantid Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book

Detailed passages involving orthopedic surgeries and pathological findings of dementia patients from Pleasant View nursing home. Much of the story involved Jim Bob and Mary Louise and their love life interspersed with the medical mystery. While informative, the details detracted mystery portion of the book. Fans of Dr Brady are sure to enjoy and welcome this addition to the series.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

Out today, another mystery featuring Doc Brady, an orthopedist in Houston, Texas. Here is a summary of the book.

“Something unusual is going on with the dementia patients at Pleasant View Nursing Home.

This leads Brady and Clarke on an adventure to discover the happenings at Pleasant View-an adventure that sees them running for their lives.”

The early parts of Act of Negligence are seeded with a lot of good humor. Dr. Brady has a great relationship with the hospital, his staff, and his wife. His wife Mary Louise is a charming woman, very much in love with her cowboy-boot wearing medical husband. Additionally, he has an interesting relationship to his practice. For example when his friend Dr. Jimmy Morgenstern calls, he says, “Okay, my friend. I’m glad you called. I need a break from answering another question about an operation I’ve performed ten thousand times…I feel like a recording today, just spewing out the same tired old information to a new face who’s all bright-eyed about hearing details of an operation they know very little about. Know what I mean?” This must be the reason that Dr. Brady appreciates solving mysteries. There is something new every day to deal with.

Act of Negligence is the fourth book in the Doc Brady mystery series, written by real-life orthopedic surgeon, John Bishop, who, not surprisingly, lives in Houston, Texas. The other books in the series include Act of Murder, Act of Deception, and Act of Revenge. I have read them all, sent to me by the publicist. You don’t have to start at the beginning of the series to enjoy the books. Each works well on its own. And besides in each book the reader gains a little bit of medical knowledge as well as a medical mystery.

Originally posted on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Act of Negligence is the 4th Doc Brady medical mystery by Dr. John Bishop. Released 15th June 2021, it's 282 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.

This book and this series are entertaining and well written with cleverly crafted medical procedural mysteries starring a good-guy orthopedic surgeon and his colleagues, family, and friends in the highest echelons of Houston society. Dr. Brady is a bit of a southern conundrum, well educated and urbane (and he really loves his wife), but who's also a Silverado driving, smoking, drinking, cowboy-boots-wearing patriarchal white-guy who has never once questioned the order of the universe or his place in it. All that being said, he is appealingly written, competent, and has a strong desire to see justice done.

The author doesn't shy away from using correct medical and procedural terminology, and it gives the book verisimilitude. Medical terms are used in context and will (mostly) be easily understood by the majority of readers without any problem.

This is a series which has achieved a degree of success despite being independently published, and, in my opinion, deserves a much wider exposure and following. Although this is the fourth book in the series, it works fine as a standalone. There are some minor references throughout this installment which hearken back to things in the earlier books, but no major spoilers, and they can be read in any order.

The language is PG/R rated with some realistically raw cursing. There is also some strongly implied consensual sexual content. Main character Jim Bob likes his wife a lot and the feeling is emphatically mutual. It's nice to see a middle aged married couple who still love one another. They even have a good relationship with their adult son. It's wholesome and I really like that aspect of these books.

Four stars. I am looking forward to reading more.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the other books in the Doc Brady series so I jumped on this one and dived into the novel right away (I could not put it down!). John Bishop did not disappoint – this novel exceeded all of my expectations.

In this novel, the story centres around Pleasant View Nursing Home and the patients that are arriving in Dr. Brady’s care and who are passing away from typical every day orthopedic procedures (very unusual for him and his practice). Dr. Brady is not satisfied with the obvious reasons given for their passing (age and comorbidities) especially when they all have in common: dementia, thyroid issues and the same nursing home. Something just doesn’t add up to him and despite multiple warning signs, he is determined to seek justice for his patients.

What he uncovers blows your mind away – unethical practices, lies, murder and even medical success (but with great cost and not done ethically). Once again, Doc Brady puts his own life on the line to defend and protect his patients and to bring to justice those who have harmed them.

I loved the plot in this story although it hurt me to see someone prey on the emotions of the elderly and their children, who just want to see their parents in their ‘normal’ state again. We learn about nerve regeneration in this novel, something that sounds almost too incredible for words which makes me understand why some would go to the extend we see in this novel but this does not make it right. And while there are technical terms in the novel especially as tied to the nerve regeneration (I had to reread some of the very excited Pathologist sentences over to make sure I understood), it does not take away from the intensity and plot.

This novel is intense, well paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The plot is unique and I love the way he brings Doc Brady to life. He is just a naturally curious, down to earth, good person who loves to question why (which is always to the betterment of his patients!). I loved every moment of this book and can’t wait to see what Doc Brady gets up to next!

John Bishop MD has done it again !! Act of Negligence is the fourth book in his Doc Brady Mystery series and it will blow you away !!

The Doc Brady Mystery series follows main character Doc Jim Bob Brady around as his spends time with his beautiful wife Mary Louise and as he works as an orthopedic surgery at the Medical Center in Houston Texas. Normally he enjoys his job fixing people’s joint pain with surgery so that they can continue on with their active lives. However in Act of Negligence Doc Brady operates on a number of patients that were sent over from a nursing home, Pleasant View Nursing Home, and shortly after their surgeries the patients die from the same thing. As Doc Brady is not use to losing patients, especially that many in that short of a period, it weights heavy on him. Luckily he has a nurse that works on that floor and is use to seeing death more that him set his might at ease a bit. Unfortunately when Dr. Jeff Clarke, the pathologist handling the autopsies, finds some interesting results, he teams up with Doc Brady to find out what is going on.

All of the deceased have more in common than they should and it looks like the director of the nursing home, Dr. James Morgenstern, may be doing more to them than he should be. Unfortunately they are going to need solid proof and not just their gut feelings to bring a stop to Mortgenstern’s experiments…..

Author Bishop has a way with drawing the reading into the story. Doc Brady and Mary Louise are a great couple and reading about their every day lives is entertaining enough but when you get to go along with Doc Brady to his job and see everything he does through the doctor’s viewpoint, it is a real eye opener. But we can be rest assured that no matter what the case involves, Doc Brady will find out the truth in the ends…..even if it is way above his pay grade and he could end up looking down the barrel of a gun before it’s over.

Thank you to #Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read "Act of Negligence", the new medical thriller by John Bishop, MD in return for a fair and honest review.

Having read one other in this series - and planning to read the other two - I jumped at the chance to read the latest adventure of Dr Jim Bob Brady, Orthopedic Surgeon, along with his wife Mary Louise and his associates.
This time, Jim Bob is involved in the world of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and other dementias, as well as medical experimentation.

When four patients referred to Dr. Brady die after what should be routine surgeries - for age-related issues such as broken bones - and all due to rapid heart failure, Dr. Brady becomes suspicious; especially when all four were referred to him by the same doctor at the same Long Term Care facility. And it appears that a) they are early-onset AD sufferers.

Enlisting the pathology head to examine the brains of these patients, it soon becomes apparent that there is 'something fishy' about both their diagnoses, treatments and deaths. So, it's Dr. Jim Bob, amateur detective time.

As in his previous novels, Dr. Bishop delves into the minutia of his operating procedures, sometimes a little too deeply, but if you've read his other books, this should not come as a surprise. Sometimes I feel as if I could perform the same surgeries after his exhaustive explanations and step-by-step expositions.

We are introduced to extensive explanations of the reasons for Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias, but along the way we're also treated to a cracking good mystery, with a hair-raising climax.

Certainly this book can be read as a standalone, but it would be a good idea to start at the beginning of the series, so you get a feel for Dr. Bishop's style. Recommended for anyone who enjoys an in-depth mystery with a lot of medicine thrown in.

Today, I read an advanced reader copy of Act of Negligence, A Doc Brady Mystery by John Bishop MD.

Bishop is an orthopedic surgeon and keyboard musician and this is the fourth book in his Doc Brady Mystery series.

Most of us know that there can be many potentially life-threatening complications from surgery. But what if you are an orthopedic surgeon following the usual precautions and in a period of 24 hours you've lost multiple patients?

Well in this storyline the orthopedic surgeon, Doc Brady, pairs up with the pathologist, Dr. Clarke, to investigate Pleasant View Nursing Home.

Genuinely, I like the relationship between these two doctors. They are passionate about their profession and teach great coping strategies. I appreciate the range of musical interests displayed. They show us that some doctors are disarming, vulnerable, and can provide witty banter.

The story speaks of moral responsibility and values. It points out qualitative and quantitative approaches and a need for responsible management of data. It demonstrates why the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) is necessary.

Dr. Jim Bob Brady and his wife Mary Louise are still a love story for the ages. Her unwavering support helps him chase his wild ideas and helps get him out of some sticky situations again, as in previous stories.

Dr. Jim Bob Brady is an orthopedic surgeon who appreciates the fact that very few of his patients die on him. When four die within a week, he’s hoping they have something in common besides him. Since they’re also patients with dementia, he’s left feeling he really never knew much about them either. It’s a medical mystery not really suited to his skills as a surgeon, so luckily he has plenty of friends in other areas of medicine.

With input from nurses, doctors of pathology, and friends and family of the deceased, he starts putting together what sounds like a very unlikely case, but sometimes that’s exactly what can make it true. As he keeps thinking how unbelievable his findings are, more and more evidence is pointing to the impossible.

This was an engaging book from start to finish, and I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars. I’ve enjoyed both of the Doc Brady mysteries I’ve ready, and either of them could also stand alone just fine. While it’s fun to know a bit about the characters, the author also gives us plenty of detail and background to understand the current book. I’d recommend any of the Doc Brady mysteries I’ve read to those who enjoy medical mysteries. They’ve been fun and distracting without the medical part being too graphic.

Jim Bob is back and better than ever. I was disappointed in the smaller role of his wonderful wife, but the nature of the story warranted it. As Alzheimer’s/dementia patients are passing away in excessive numbers following routine surgeries, the good doctor’s curiosity gets him involved in investigating what’s causing the deaths. Fast-paced, educational, and very exciting! I received an advanced digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review.

Another excellent medical thriller in this series. The story covers all aspects of the disease and the suffering. The medical terms might be too much for those without the background. But with the fast pace it could be overlooked. This time the sleuthing is done by a colleague and Brady only plays second fiddle. Still a joy ride. Enjoy it.

I read this as a standalone without realizing that it was a part of a series but I enjoyed it quite a bit and didn't feel like I missed anything by not reading the prior books. It was a fast paced page turner for sure!

I enjoyed this one! It’s definitely very medical heavy so if you don’t at the very least, have some interest in healthcare, I’m not sure if this one would be for you. I thought the storyline was interesting and I enjoyed the characters.
