In the fifth book in this charming chapter book series, a human boy and a young Sasquatch set off on an eventful treasure hunt through the North Woods
Hugo and Boone were having a bad case of Nothing-to-do-itis: They have free time but can’t think of a single thing to do! Finally, they decide to head to Uncle Figgy’s Toy Store, where they discover the legendary Mad Marvin presenting his new invention: the Marvelous Monster Magnet! I've been reading the Big Foot and Little Foot series to my four-year old daughter and found it a perfect intro to chapter books. With illustrations every few pages or so, this has been the perfect step alongside authors like Roald Dahl. We've really enjoyed following Hugo and Boone on their adventures and every night it's a battle to stop reading after five or so chapters. Throughout the series the imaginary world of sasquatches has become more and more lush and we've gotten to know the characters well. I hope this isn't the last book in the series - although the ending of book 5 seemed to be setting us up for that.
I so enjoyed sharing this series with my two older sons and look forward to introducing my two younger boys to the friendship of Hugo and Boone, the inventive world building of the Sasquatch community and the deep north woods, and the examination of what makes a “monster,” or “creature.” Ellen Potter uses kindhearted humor and fun to drive home the idea that normalcy is in the eye of the beholder, and we can all find a common ground if we allow ourselves to be led by curiosity instead of fear. I’m sad to see the series end, but this fifth installment delivered everything my family hoped to see and then some.
Fifth in the series Hugo and Boone set off to earn money to buy the latest toy created by one of their heroes. Their adventures bring them to new locations in the North Woods. They meet new sasquatches and learn to treasure their adventures more than the latest and greatest toy.
This series has been so engaging and fun. My 5y/o daughter absolutely loves the adventures between these two friends. I’m sad this is the last one for the moment. I hope there are more of these to come in the future.
