Not many know about the home at 1300 Brookshire Lane, or what goes on inside of the white, aged and weathered Victorian style home. Yet, residents nearby will tell you of the flickering lights from random room windows, and the periodic faint high pitch tone of what sounds like a whistle, coming from the dark forest behind it.
Owen is all too excited to move into this sizeable two-story home with his children, but soon discovers himself questioning whether or not something, or someone is present in the home with them. The grim, negative energy weighs heavier by the day. Every room feels of vexed, desperate eyes pursuing their every move. Furniture moves, doors slam shut, and shadows seem to inhabit every dark corner.
With no where else to go, Owen finds help and discovers one thing for sure. The house wants something, and it will not rest until it has it.
TERRENCE DAMON SPENCER is an Amazon bestselling author known for his gripping horror and mystery novels, crafting chilling tales that have captivated readers since 2007. A veteran of the US Marine Corps, Terrence shares with his wife a deep fascination for exploring haunted locations—experiences that often find their way into his eerie narratives.
Terrence’s journey as an author began after years of spontaneously entertaining his wife and children with vivid, imaginative stories during family road trips. It wasn't until one unforgettable day at the movies—when a preview mirrored one of his impromptu stories so closely that his family's jaws dropped—that his wife finally dared him to write his first novel.
Now, Terrence’s novels, including favorites such as *Premises* and *Strong*, grace the shelves of his local Barnes and Noble, delighting readers with spine-tingling suspense and unforgettable characters. When not delving into supernatural mysteries or crafting his latest thriller, Terrence enjoys spending time with his family, including his five adult children, two grandchildren, and their loyal Mastiff/Dane, Tank, at their home in Pueblo, Colorado.
First, this book is a strong 10/10. Second, I am an English major, and this book is by far one of the best I have read. Even without the multiple unforeseen plot twists, the story of a grieving family unknowingly dropped into the center of a home's unfinished turmoil stands strong. Terrence Spencer brilliantly weaves about six plot twists into this exceptional edge-of-the-seat thriller.
Seriously, the novel is among the best I have ever read. I hope that he writes more thrillers. He has an amazing talent. I rarely read a book where I do not see what is coming, and I did not see any of the twists coming.
His attention to detail is freaking amazing!!!! I am a visual person, and his writing allowed me to escape into Owen’s, Kyra’s, & Jacob’s worlds and experience their emotions. The author marvelously crafts each scene and does not overwhelm the reader with the multiple characterizations.
I only meant to sneak peek a couple chapters of this novel before I started book three of a series I am currently reading. I was immediately hooked; however, chapter two entranced me. Two days later, I am finished. <3
I absolutely loved this book! Mystery, intrigue, suspense all creatively packed in. I couldn’t put it down. If you’re considering reading this, I highly recommend it!
Excerpt: She closes her eyes—wishing it away, like she had seen in so many movies—hoping this, bad dream, will all just disappear when she opens them; then she could escape this soundproof prison. She mashes her eyelids even tighter, breathing heavily through clinched teeth, her back and hands pressed flat against the door.
Hints of sound gradually returns around her. She could now hear the water gently sloshing inside of the tub. It worked. Her eyes stretch open wide. To her horror, the curtain is now fully open. Then, something speaks from it, in a faint, raspy, and shaken voice.
So Koh…Kohuk…
The words were choked and gargled.
She slams her eyes shut again. “Go-away, Go-away, Go-away.” She chants, yanking, and twisting at the doorknob behind her. The water continues to splash, with the faint sounds of pounding in the tub that grows louder by the second—as though something or someone were thrashing about inside of it. “Go away!” She yells.
Abruptly, the room falls silent beside her rapid breathing. Her eyelids flutter, hesitating before opening fully. She’s horrified when she realizes, she’s now standing beside the tub—a tub not filled with clear water as she thought—but with, what seemed like, black…
Before she could think, gasp, or scream, two hands—with fingers thin, narrow, and completely covered with the black goo—spring up from the dark pool, instantaneously grabbing her wrists. She tries to pull away, but its strength is too much, yanking her inside of the bathtub, headfirst. She kicks frantically, while slumped over the side of the tub, with her head fully submerged in the thick muck. The black liquid travels up her neck and back, in a veiny, web-like fashion. She gradually gives up the battle as her arms and legs weaken, then fall limp to the floor
Premises is a solid book. Readers will discover that the strength of this novel lies in great character development. The backstory of the main characters serves the novel in a fashion that reaches beyond the plot of a family living in a haunted house. There are plenty of disturbing and scary moments and a fun, ghostly mystery that will keep the reader guessing and turning pages.
