People tend to do all manner of mad things when a summer heatwave hits in York, teenagers most of all. However, then a growing gang of teen ruffians turns wild summer hijinks into arson, it falls to DCI Darren Mitchell to put a stop to it before someone dies. The problem is, no one seems to believe his theory of conspiracy or the growing threat. It's a race against time for Mitchell to gather the evidence and turn some of these poor lads around before something more than buildings burn!
Oliver Davies was born in Sussex and raised in London, but never felt at home until he settled in the soggy but beautiful Yorkshire dales. Brought up on crime novels borrowed second-hand from his dad, he's always wished his life involved less laundry and more car chases, though writing is probably safer. Between tussling with his several dogs and rambling the moors, Oliver finds time for writing moody police detectives, playing the guitar, and occasionally even communicates with the outside world.
Who wrote and proof-read this book? Every page had at least one Americanism on it - y'know, gonna, gotcha, wanna, kid etc. This, mixed in with mardy, aye, son, lad and one sentence that referred to a character's strong Yorkshire accent to the point where I had to ask myself whether it was set in Yorkshire, England, New York or New England. Raymond Chandler it wasn't. It was, however, jarring and completely unnecessary.
Not even the great 20th Century American writers put that much slang in their books. And you could forgive them if they did as their novels are based in America.
I have read the other Oliver Davies series and they have been very good, with little or no American slang in them. It is a shame there was so much of it in Heatwave because the plot line was good. I won't continue with the rest of the series.
Couldn't stop reading! Hot summer tale of teen arson. DCI Mitchell gets in a few good runs, banters with DI Hux!ey, and with some bruises and some difficulty brings the perpetrators to justice. Series continues with interesting plots and characters.
