Grave Concerns #2

Hell Raising and Other Pastimes

Rate this book
People have told me to go to hell—I guess they finally got their wish.

I’ve finally accepted the fact that I might not be entirely human, but still life doesn’t give me a break. Instead, I’m sucked into hell at Lucifer’s demand, and realize death is even more complicated than my life was.

I have to survive hell—where everything wants to kill me—so I can confront the devil himself. My love life is even more complex, though. Troy is terrified of his werewolf side hurting me, Kase and Grant are lying to me and Hunter is keeping his own secrets. I know better than to trust anyone, especially the men who have taken over my life.

Get to Lucifer’s Court, find out the truth about the missing spirits, figure out exactly what I am and try not to die along the way. Oh, and don’t fall in love with the men who will for sure break my heart and possibly get me killed.

Easy enough, right?

Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of violence, bloodshed and death. There are references to parental abandonment and tattooing a child.

**2.5**

While I like the general story of this series, the FMC started to seriously grate on me in this book. She's whiny, occasionally bitchy, and at times just breath-takingly stupid. If not for the fact that the next book ends the series, I'd seriously reconsider continuing onwards.

Folks are also really slow on the uptake. Like, all the characters in this book. I felt like the author telegraphed pretty obviously what Ava is right from the first book, so everyone in the damn universe being obsessed with finding out what she is just felt like it was a bit...too much. And dumb.

So given that what she is isn't much of a newsflash, I hope the last book clarifies why/how she is, given that the series has made a big deal of how impossible her existence is.

I have been waiting for this since I finished the first book in this series and I was not disappointed! Jayce pulled me back into Ava, Troy, Hunter, and Kase’s world and had me ordering take out to avoid having to cook so I could continue reading. My love for Ava didn’t cease, this heroine is one of the snarkiest and hilarious females I have run across but this time around she had some tricks up her sleeve she didn’t even know about. Her smexy trio of men are at her side as they venture thru Hell to visit Lucifer and I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the pages as the plot grew thicker. Just when I thought I had an idea where things are going, Jayce would completely surprise me with a twist and I loved every single minute! This is so full of action, mystery, suspense, and steam I swear I shushed my husband to avoid interruption while I was reading it. Add in a meeting with Lucifer, some unexpected games to the mix of trying to figure what Ava truly is, and the villain reveal I didn’t even think of to get the result of seeing this reader down on her knees begging the author for the next book without any sort of shame. In this installment, I got to see the characters show a little more of their vulnerable sides when their insecurities come to light - yet their bonds strengthen because Ava isn’t giving up on them and they aren’t giving up on her (their banter is epic!). Even immortals can have mere mortal insecurities and I loved that.

I have never really been a big fan of supernatural romances, but this series is turning me into one quite quickly. Jayce has created a world with characters that are lovable in their own way and a plot that has kept me engaged to the point where I don’t want this story to end. I can’t wait to see where takes Ava and her men next!

Ava and the guys are in Hell, and need to find their way to Lucifer. Of course, nothing is as easy as it seems, and once they get to Lucifer, it’s even more complicated. I really liked A a and I liked that we get some answers about her. The guys seem to still be keeping some secrets, but they are sharing more. I’m really liking the twists and adventures in this series and am looking forward to book 3 :)

When I read the blurb for this book, I knew I had to read it, and I’m so glad I did. It is such a great read, full of excitement and a little darkness.

The characters are created so well and the world is full of detail. All of that truly brings the book to life and kept me interested, from start to finish.

Overall, I highly recommend this book!

Good story...terrible editing!

I would rate this higher except for the terrible editing. It seemed like it got worse the more I read. Misspelled words are one thing, but so many instances of left out words drove me crazy.

Another great addition to a delightful series

The adventures of Ava and her men carry forward in this sequel to Grave Robbing and other Hobbies. Just the irreverent names of these books alone should be an indication that the author has a great sense of humor indeed. The events of this book take place in hell, where our cheeky protagonist has been summoned by Lucifer himself. Her four lovers; Troy, Kase, Hunter and Grant accompany her to Lucifer’s palace and they find themselves contestants in what amounts to a supernatural death match with no rules. Ava still has unanswered questions about her own supernatural abilities and solving the problems regarding the missing souls - which was the main theme of the first book.

I absolutely LOVE this series. Ava is such a fun character, I can’t get enough of her snarky personality and hilarious repartee with her guys and also Lucifer. Although she does self regulate in this book a bit more, afraid that Lucifer will turn her into a smoking pile of ash if she pushes too far. But it’s such a fun read! I love all her guys, but I admit that I’m solidly “Team Hunter.” He’s got the BEST lines and he’s so unapologetic for who he is that I find him utterly charming.

World building and plot development are top notch. I do feel that character building could be improved a bit. We get a better glimpse into the back stories of the men, and it’s not always pretty. One issue I have with RH stories is that there are so many main characters that it always seems that the men are never fully fleshed out. I do feel that way here with Kase and Grant. While we get some history on each of them, most of it was hinted at and glossed over, so that I don’t really feel I know them as well as I do Troy and Hunter. I hope this is rectified in the next book. I want the author to state what happened in their pasts, rather then “tippy toe” around it and the reader is left to fill in the blanks or draw their own conclusions. There were also some editing issues, but nothing that dulled my enjoyment of the book.

I highly recommend this book, and the series. It’s funny, intriguing and steamy. What’s not to love about that?

3.5, round down

This was a fun continuation of the Grave Concerns series. I’m still liking Eva and her guys. (Notice I said still liking, not liked, because while the book comes to a natural stopping point, the villain has yet to truly be defeated and the series is obviously not over, even if there aren’t yet any more books.) Speaking of villains, I did find them and their motivation super cliched. But to explain why would be a spoiler.

This book is more steamy than the last, which is nice. But on a point of personal preference, I hate the word cunt in my sex scenes and Carter uses it almost exclusively. But for the most part, I like Eva and her guys together and there was a concerted effort to give them all some backstory. Almost exclusively tragic backstories, which is a little predictable, but whatever. I liked them.

Again, the editing could be touched up, and there were moments in which Eva knew things I didn’t know how or said someone said something that isn’t actually in the narrative. Here’s an example, “His words came back to me, when he’d said his true body resembled a dragon…” I read these books back to back, Hunter never says his body resembles a dragon in either book. These moments yanked me right out of the narrative.

For the most part, however, I’m still enjoying the sarcasm and easy flow of the story. I’ll be looking for a book three whenever it’s released.

Hmmm, nope don't like that. Just because you get hurt after triggering someone doesn't make you entitled to their trauma.

Seriously getting tired of this woman's need to be a bitch and pick at other people's wounds. This is looking like it's ramping up to a DNF situation. I'll give it a couple more pages but I'm about done.

Yep. That's one fit too many for me. I don't have the patience to endure on the off chance she gets her shit together. It's one thing to have a delicate flower that needs to be coddled and comforted, another one to have a stubborn mule that just refuses to get with the program or deal with her shit.

Great follow up.

I knew she had to be something but didn’t see that coming. Also Lucifer certainly lived up to his name and I didn’t expect the bad guy to be who it actually was. Definitely looking forward to the next book and wondering who her new friend is.

This book picks up where Grave Robbing and Other Hobbies left off…in Hell. And it is hot, hot, hot in more ways than one.

What had Ava’s life come to when she, a mortal psychic with other strange unknown powers, is summoned to Hell with a stoic vampire, a surly werewolf, an arrogant mage, and a playful Hellhound? Kase, Tony, Grant, and Hunter are her new family of protectors and lovers. Yes, they are idiot obsessive men going all alpha all of the time, but Ava can take care of herself. In her own words, she’s “a lot harder to kill than she looks” And she’s full of sass and snark and is capable of holding her own…even with the devil himself. But the question is, what does Lucifer want? The answer will force her to find out who she is and risk everything for the people she cares about.

The mouth on Ava is a treasure. She’s been told more than once that it could get her killed. But she is who she is and screw everyone else. My favorite kind of protagonist. Don’t let all the bravado fool you though. She’s also afraid and vulnerable. She has always wanted to be normal, but that is proving to be further out of reach the more she delves into the depths of hell. But she has her sexy alpha team behind her. Lucky girl! In this book, we get to read about the men’s stories in more detail as they become more unguarded and reveal their unhappy and destructive lives. Also, expect some sexy hookups along the way. The Troy, Kase, and Ava scene is hot! More importantly, we find out what Ava is and it’s a shocker.

Once again, Ms. Carter has written an intriguing paranormal comedy with a plethora of extraordinary characters old and new who make love, fight to the death, and discover their true selves. Give the series a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Thank you to Ms. Carter for giving me the opportunity to review this book with no expectation of a positive review.

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript is clean, with no typos that I found and well constructed sentences. The world building is vibrant, with the creatures and landscapes of Hell coming to life. The characterization of the heroine especially was great, with her being a sympathetic, nuanced character. The development of the four heroes was less vibrant, primarily because the novel takes place entirely from the heroine’s Point of View. The development of the romantic relationship was okay, with a heat level of three chili peppers. It was not the main focal point of this story, since it tended to be more on the urban fantasy side. The plot was action packed and exciting, the real strength of this novel. The pacing was consequently quick and gripping. There was low angst and high stakes throughout this novel, which tends to be one of my preferred narrative structures for a romance novel. This novel used the Road Trip trope and the Chosen One trope. The world building, plot, and pacing were all five stars. The characterization was four stars and the development of the romantic relationship was three stars. I detracted one star from the overall rating because of the cliffhanger ending. I therefore gave this novel a combined rating of four stars. Unfortunately this novel ended on a cliffhanger instead of a Happy For Now or Happy Ever After ending. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy urban fantasy and reverse harem romances and do not mind cliffhanger endings. I will probably read the next novel in this series, though I will probably not pick up book four if book three also ends on a cliffhanger. I do not plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novel, though I did enjoy it.

** Cliffhanger-ish Warning! ** I really like this book. This is the second book in the series, and it has more of the wonderful insanity that was in Grave Robbing and Other Hobbies. It's still a fantasy, reverse harem romance with a mystery or two, fast-paced action, funny moments, and all kinds of supernatural beings. Since Ava, Kase, Grant, Hunter, and Troy are traipsing through Hell, things are much more dangerous and hotter (in all meanings of the word).

This journey to the infernal palace of Lucifer is overflowing with hell-beasts, demons, grody liquor from creepy plants, and sizzling sexiness. As Ava and her guys travel to their destination, the dangers don’t end: Battles are waged and deals with the Devil are made. I am still loving Ava’s sassy mouth, her stubbornness, self-esteem issues, and her confusion about her past and what she is. The guys do a good job of keeping things interesting, too. While there isn’t much in the way of mushy love stuff, there are gestures of affection as well as super spicy scenes.

I thoroughly enjoyed how the mystery of what Ava is almost eclipsed the mystery of who or what was causing the vampires and werewolves to go berserk back in the land of the living. However, both questions are answered by the end. The problems are not resolved, so I’m looking forward to the next book.

Lots of typos, but nothing too distracting.

We start off in hell and Ava has to find her way to Lucifer's court without dying and with the company of her slightly irritating men. Hunter is in his element because this is his home, Kase is trying to mend bridges, Troy is ignoring her and Grant is trying to cast wards.
Ava is still feeling hurt about their deception and lies concerning what she is and is hoping she can find out in hell. The journey through hell is dangerous from all sides with evil spiders, hellhounds, reapers and beasties a plenty.
With many things going wrong and enemies emerging... Will she get there in one piece with everything intact?

This book made me laugh out loud in several places... I loved the humor and pace of the story.
This is an extremely well written reverse harem story with plenty of naughtiness thrown in for good measure.
I absolutely loved this book and think a very talented author can add sparkle to your life.

Ava is still up to stubborn, pig-headded ways. All of them really are a lesson in how to miscommunication. It's no wonder they drive each other into situations that require some to say sorry or have make-up smex. Hopefully it's just a male thing, but it's a paranormal thing too because Ava is just as bad.

This whole book is basically the gang crossing hell. Fun hellalious times there. Ava's inner dialog is like a minefields at times - overwhelming and dangerous. Lots of whining and bonding going on amongst everyone, some naughty smex too. Are the mysteries of who and what Ava really are finally going to be revealed?!? You wish, beware the Cliffie. Hehe

Overall, I really hope the there will be some more character development and tightening of the story lines, as there is a lot going on. We will see in the next book

Ava considers herself to be a fairly good medium. She’s handled her fair share of ghosts. She has spent her life alone and trying to be normal but she is starting to realize she might not be normal at all. Lucifer has summoned her to hell. Not that she had a choice. Along with Hunter a hellhound, Kase a vampire, Grant a mage, and Troy a werewolf, their journey is difficult. There are lots of obstacles along the way where everyone is trying to kill her. While she is very attracted to all of them, she’s trying very hard not to fall in love with them. They are keeping secrets from her and she doesn’t know what or who to trust. This paranormal romance has mystery, humor, and lots of steam. Can’t wait for the next part.

Ava and the guys, Hunter, Grant, Troy and Kase, are trapped in Hell and have to find their way to Lucifer in order to return home. The path is harrowing and lots of challenges are in front of the group as they try to hide Ava from the other demons in Hell. Ava is able to confront Kase and Grant about their deception and they are able to work through their issues and the group grows closer as a result of their shared troubles. Each character is well developed although we know Ava the best since this is told from her POV. Tons of steam (despite the setting) and lots of action keep the book moving. Some answers about who and what she is, the source of the "shadow" is revealed and sets us up the next book in the series for a hellacious fight. Looking forward to the next in series.

4 1/2 stars

Ava Hardin has been summoned to Hell by Lucifer and when the story begins she and her 4 companions are navigating the unpredictable and treacherous terrain. They run into a lot of interesting characters (and a few really unnerving ones – but that’s what you’d expect in Hell) all leading to the ultimate meeting with Lucifer himself.

This was a fun mix of paranormal reverse harem, humor and of course a good bit of sexy times. I enjoyed the interplay of the characters and the entertaining blend of hot scenes and amusing interactions. The ending provided a few twists I didn’t expect – which is always good. Though things are wrapped up at the end, it felt like the door was open to continue with additional stories.

This is book two of what is (so far) a two-part series and I’m interested in reading book one since there are some references to what happened previously.

You reap what you sow........

Just as Ava was pulled into Hell, I was pulled into another gripping installment of the Grave Concerns series.
Ava is special, not just because of what she is (you'll find that out soon enough!!) but for how she manages to cope and adapt to different situations. She may have a wobble but she's a fighter....as she shows in the last chapter. There's a vulnerability to her that is endearing yet slightly heartbreaking.

As with the first book there are some pretty dark, horrific events......and sex, of course! I may be getting a tad jealous of Ava having four hot, talented guys to play with and rely upon ha ha.

This is most definitely an adult book, that I struggled to put down! Read with chocolate or your favourite sweets and a tall glass of something cool as you're about to step into the hot as hell world of Lucifer!

I am absolutely enamored with this series. I love reverse harem's and this book had a wonderful and snarky heroine and three hot males who stuck by her side while she was in hell. The writing in this book was very interesting and the story line was exciting and extremely interesting. I have been waiting for this book since I read the first one and I was not disappointed. The book was funny, exciting, and adventurous. I was sad at the cliff-hanger ending and now I am anxiously awaiting the next story to see what happens. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves adventurous reverse harem reads.

Nowhere near as good as the first book. This one made me really dislike the characters. Every last one of them. The fmc has zero self-respect in that she's chasing after mmcs that at different points have disrespected her, lied to her, or outright rejected her. A few seconds alone with them and everything is suddenly forgiven so she can have sex.

Troy is a great example. Barely talks to her this book, pulls away from her over and over again, yet she has sex with him so the vampire can feed from him and heal. Like, Troy even says before they have sex, "Let's get this over with." ugh

I just really can't stand the fmc anymore, and I really hate the dynamic between her and her supposed love interests. DNF 66%.

I loved this book. It is the second in the series, but I read it without having read the first yet. As a result I was missing a lot of the background, but enough hints are dropped early on I had no trouble following or getting into the story.

And what a fantastic paranormal story! Layers of mystery, character and relationship development, excitement, and anticipation of what might come next. Nothing about it was expected. It doesn’t bring you one climax point, but builds up several, each a little bigger than the last. I loved every minute of the ride. Can’t wait for book 3.

Ava and her men find themselves trapped in Hell in the second installment of the series. As they try to find their way to the center of Hell, Ava starts to discover even more powers she didn't know she had. She makes deals with Lucifer and tries her best to keep her men safe. There are some pretty major reveals and some shocking moments.
There are more sexy times in this book and the dynamics between Ava and the guys seem to be better known. Ava's discovery into her past and what she is progresses nicely in this book. I'm not sure how many books will be in the series but this one sets up for an amazing fight to go down.

Wow! This second book in the series did not disappoint! We continue to learn more about Ava and her “men”. Their dynamic continues to be so hot and steamy! As they travel through hell to get to Lucifer, there are so many situations they stumble on that keep the story moving right along! I could not put this book down once I started! I needed to read just one more chapter to see what would happen and before I knew it, the sun was coming up and my eyes felt like sandpaper...but it was so worth!! I can’t wait to read the third book!

Digging Deeper . . .

Ava has been summoned to hell by Lucifer, and her guys go along with her. Hunter is a hellhound, Kase is a scary and secretive vampire, Grant is a powerful mage with attitude, and Troy is a possessive werewolf detective.

Their journey is difficult as there are many attempts on Ava’s life. She also knows the guys have secrets they are not revealing, so she doesn’t know who she can trust. And when Ava discovers more powers of her own than she knew about, that hope of ever being “normal” gets further away. Will they finally figure out what’s going on with the missing spirits?

Not a bad story

I’ve enjoyed this series but the FMC does get on my nerves. Ava always seems to have her head in the sand and shes always getting pushed around. I really hope that she bucks up in the next book and kicks some ass. It would also be nice if she demands what she deserves from her men bc right now she’s just an easy lay. The relationship aspect is just not there.

I do like the men though. They are diverse and have their own personalities.

My second problem with this book is that it cost 5.99 but is only 200 pages. I purchased before I saw the page count. I wouldn’t have continued the story if I knew.

Not as good as the first in the series

Fun trip through Hell, complete with weird flora and fauna. The story progressed well. Then the author used one of the most cliché plot mechanics and the one I’ve always hated the most: someone important to the hero/heroine has to die for them to get off their butt and save the world. Everything was going great and then we get smacked with the big wet fish cliché. I’m sure other people will enjoy it but now I’m not sure I will continue with the series if cliché writing is all I have to look forward to. Four stars for good plot and writing - would’ve been five if you hadn’t killed that character the way you did.

Ava and the guys have been sucked into hell to meet with Lucifer. I will say that I think Kase and Grant need to make it up to Ava a little bit more or at least communicate with her better in the future. There are definite steps forward for Ava and all her guys, along with some steps back. We get a lot of answers and a million more questions. I’m looking forward to book 3band seeing how her relationships evolve more.

Ava, a medium, and her supernatural men, Hunter the hellhound, Kase the vampire, Grant the mage, and Troy the werewolf, are back in book 2 of the Grave Concerns series by Jayce Carter. This book is not a stand alone so you have to read book 1. Something is attacking the community and it's up the Ava and her men to figure things out. This book is well paced, some twists, turns, action, and steam. I hate a cliffhanger and we are left with one...yuck But let's see what happens in book 3.
