Guy de Maupassant's very first published short story, 'Ball of Lard' (Itiboolaya) is hands down the greatest short story I have ever read. This anthology has 10 Maupassant short stories and I loved them all except for one. This will be ranked as one of the best K G Karunathilaka's translated anthologies. A great variety of stories showcasing the masterful storytelling ability of Guy de Maupassant. This book proves why Maupassant is one of the top 3 greatest short story writers of all time, along with Edgar Allan Poe and Anton Chekhov.
K G Karunathilaka is known for his detailed prologues which are so informative and beautifully presented. But it's advisable to read the prologue last because they often contain spoilers. But do not miss the prologue!
