Poor setting and characters.

This book is a strange mix of fantasy and Sci-Fi. The problem arises when the setting is so poorly described. Instead of talking more about it, the author spend pages and pages in shopping scenes, and shopping of the most common stuff. The other characters are so poorly introduce, and their dialogues are just plain. In fact, the secondary characters are describe as just -- “You don’t have to be modest, especially since that pay includes your services to him.” -- The actions scenes are short and the story is not original.

When it comes to waking up and fighting for one's life from the get-go, Satou Takahiro's lucking into the skills of an ace fighter pilot aboard a highly customized, state-of-the-art military starship is the best of the best. Granted, he has no idea what star system he's in, he has zero clue how to navigate the cultures and customs of the nearest trading depot, and the chances of him slipping by crooked government officials unscathed are slim. Still, all that aside, Hiro's got it pretty good.

REBORN AS A SPACE MERC…#1 spits Hiro into the middle of a growing intergalactic conflict as a rising bounty hunter. Thanks to the guy's past life as an obsessive gamer with killer FPS skills, navigating high-end starships and wielding laser pistols are second nature. Now, if only he could figure out how to use the automatic cooker on his ship, remember which clothing store wouldn't leave him pennyless, or find something to do with the busty girl he saved from thugs in the crappy part of town. Hiro is a nice guy, but his comically immense naïveté could make his life as a space mercenary a little difficult.

This novel fits comfortably into the realm of a soft sci-fi epic that errors on the side of overexplaining. One may wish to stay away from this title if uninterested in reading whole chapters dedicated to Hiro nailing down the daily routine of ship maintenance, grocery shopping, and cajoling his sort-of girlfriend. Hiro is 27 years old, and thanks to his exploits in the cockpit, moderately wealthy. As such, he simply takes life as it comes. A day at the shooting range? Bickering with a bureaucrat? Hunting for soda at an import retailer? Sneakily reprogramming the training room's artificial intelligence to ensure his lover keeps her curves?

Half of REBORN AS A SPACE MERC…#1 is of the weirdly domestic variety, while the other half toes the line of intergalactic dog-fighting. To wit, Hiro blows up space pirates just as often as he ponders the efficacy of upgrading his shower to a fancier version that recycles water and saves cash.

Not to say Hiro himself is entirely boring. He's kindhearted but naïve, which results in hysterically cutting remarks or circumstances when his obliviousness is the perfect recipe for disaster ("She does fancy herself a veteran," he says of someone piloting a certified death machine. "Uh, she's probably fine, though. Probably," p. 132-133). The guy saves a young woman from being raped in an alley (but stumbles into buying out her debts and recruiting her into his crew). The guy tips off the regional Grakkan Empire on the whereabouts of local pirates (but is routed into serving as fodder in an ambush of the pirate hideout). He's helpful but hapless (Hiro: "[W]hat kind of fool dies without even using their trump card?" p. 135).

The book's lack of emphasis on technical jargon and its casual approach to worldbuilding puts readers in a rather learn-as-you-go rhythm. One only learns about the unflappable but curious Lieutenant Serena Holz, with royal blood, and her eagerness and attraction to Hiro, as circumstances dictate. One only learns about the quirks of working as a mercenary, how to pal around with the local guild, and all the minutiae of running a ship, because Hiro accidentally rubs elbows with a cute but irritable, tsundere elf, named Elma. However much info Hiro ported over from his previous life pales in comparison to what he must learn on the fly. Sometimes, this is ideal, as when Hiro shuts down his ship's core temperature to cloak its heat signature during battle. Brilliant.

REBORN AS A SPACE MERC…#1 is not fast-moving, it's not dramatic, and it's not chock full of interstellar thrills. But it does have warm characters and an earnest, mature narrative. For example, the characters, all consenting adults, have sex (multiple times). Elsewhere, the brutal reality of facing death amid a sea of stars either astounds or paralyzes those who rush into battle every day. There is poverty, violence, corruption, and more. But then again, Hiro won't hesitate to debate the importance of adding an air purifier to his ship, discuss the value of keeping a super-secret hidey-hole compartment for contraband, or articulate the significance of negotiating a fair payment for rare cargo (which he stole from somebody else).

The Title caught my eye, on Rightstuf, so I bought the first two volumes. That might have been a Mistake. A japanese It guy, wakes up in the world of his favorite Space Opera video game. He is piloting an overpowered warship as a Mercenary. He meets a Space elf, rescues an attractive young girl, and fights a few battles. It turns into a Harem anime thing, which is not that great. The novel seems to be the Author writing his space Fanservice dreams. Not sure if I will read volume two.

The main character faces no struggle or conflict in any way. They start at the top and stay there. The MC is also a creep.

This is trash. There are better light novels out there. Don't bother with this one.

The fusion of isekai with space and science fiction elements was always something I wanted and this comes nearly closely to what I most wanted (still waiting for a space mecha isekai, gundam esque). This ends up being as compelling as I always thought the setting would be and although it is still focused around video game elements (the writer was inspired by Stellaris afterall), it ends up avoiding some of the trapings of those elements by ditching a mythical voice in your head level up system and what not. There's no HUDs that only the reborn lead can see or characters grinding and raising levels in dungeons and what not which is a relief.

I like the vibe of the series and the balance between living life as a space mercenary aligned with good, while building and developing a crew of unfortunate misfits who just want a second chance at life. The peanut gallery of observers and those who want Hiro and his beloved Krishna on their side are great, and lastly the space nations politics is a interesting and unexplored backdrop. Overall it is fun.

One thing that does set this apart from a few others is the romance. It feels a bit refreshing to have everything be cautious and full of consent full with characters still blushing at the things they can do aboard the ship, but it feels a bit more mature than what we get. The wording offers just enough of a tease to keep things T rated while cutting away at just the right time to never let romance send the plot on a tangent. I am curious how things will develop if more crew is assembled and if the writer will put more guys aboard the Krishna and what not.

Probably, the only thing that may be a concern to some readers is the power dynamic and savior dynamic presented from how things transpire (both girls are basically saved by Hiro throwing wads of cash to pay off their debt, they in turn thing he is doing it for them due to how the colony works, but he is naive and just doing it to be a good human being). But the characters do have a revelation that he is a good person and wasn't doing it for that.

Overall this is as good as I wanted and will get the next volume expeditiously.

Sounded great, but it was one of the worst I've read. The plot is just kind of gross. The main character shows up and uses his incredible power and wealth to buy a harem of space slaves who throw themselves at him after being purchased. I couldn't even make it to the end. Worst impulse buy I've made in ages. A depressing waste of a great concept.

I don't know. Maybe if you are looking for space harem erotica this would be good material? But I picked this up on the pitch that I was in for a space Isekai, and it did not deliver.

This was a pretty simple but enjoyable light novel about a guy who wakes up as his character in an open-world space RPG. If you are in the mood for it and don't mind the impending harem, you might enjoy it.

Plot - 6/10, Character - 5/10, Setting/Game Mechanics - 5/10, Writing - 6/10, Enjoyment - 6/10

The plot is fairly simple, simple enough that I covered most of it with my opening paragraph: a 27-year-old Japanese guy who enjoys playing a space RPG in his spare time wakes up as his game character. Luckily for him, he also wakes up in his one-of-a-kind spaceship that he won in a contest. Also luckily for him, he has a one-of-a-kind laser pistol that he won in a contest. And lastly and luckily for him, his ship's cargo hold is full of rare metals he's able to sell for a few million. You can probably see where this is going and if you expect that most generic power fantasies end up becoming harems, you aren't wrong there either.

On the topic of harem stories, when I see the harem tag, it lowers my likelihood of reading the book by about 20%. I picked it up anyway, hoping it would focus on the story more than the harem. I'll say this volume is probably 50% space mercenary and then 50% shopping dates and random things with the girl characters. I should mention that there is sex in this book, so it's not the typical spineless MC who's surrounded by women and acts dense the whole time. So that might be a pro or a con depending on the reader.

The characters didn't have any personality beyond the standard tropes you've likely seen before. The MC is simultaneously the weak-willed salaryman type while also the mildly gross pervy guy who spends half his perspective thinking about a girl's chest size when she enters the scene. The girls are a tsundere elf mercenary, and then a big-tiddy orphan who ends up on the street after her parents die in debt. Honestly, the more I think about the characters, the more I think I should lower the score.

I'm just going to merge the setting and writing categories into the same talking point because it's basically "okay." Nothing too special, but also nothing that gets in the way. Other than when the author describes ships arriving from FTL travel with a loud popping noise, which I don't think happens, among other science snafus. Most people will probably be familiar with these things from tv shows and might not think twice. But if you are a stickler for science, this is not hard sci-fi.

From an enjoyment standpoint, if you are a reader looking for an isekai space mercenary story that plays like a power fantasy mixed with harem, then you will probably find exactly what you're looking for. Everyone else, your enjoyment might vary. I enjoyed this first volume since I was in the mood for it and it was quick, but I likely won't continue this series further.

A typical isekai story that would be decently entertaining but it's tainted by some very gross scenes. The MC saves a girl from thugs and pays off her massive debts, he talks about not wanting to take advantage of her and she is obviously traumatized and feels she has nothing to offer other then sex. Rather then be a decent human being and reassure her he takes her virginity. Then later in the story another girl has a massive debt and is at risk for being sent to a prison full of pirates the MC pays the debt and then has sex with her when she believes that was the reason he paid the debt. The MC comes off as a complete creep.

This volume 1, is the beginning of this isekai (transported to the game space world) with an Over-Powered (OP) spaceship (Krishna). Hiro is a Japanese person that used to play a space video game and somehow got sent to this game world as an alternate reality space world. It seems to become a harem series as well. It is atypical in the sense that it is not a land-back in medieval times-cliche isekai series. Volume 1 has 200+ pages, 10 chapters and 2 side stories.
Main character gains retinue and harem members through paying their debt. A sort of space-like indentured service with benefits.
The main activities of Hiro and his spaceship Krishna are to battle space pirates and then loot their cargoes, turn them in for rewards. The rest of the time, they eat, shop, exercise and enjoy each other's company. It is not action-filled-nor is it interesting. Although it has action, the plot arcs feel flat. The illustrations look well done. The end series goal, for the main character, Hiro is to make enough money to buy a home with land (a luxury for the most rich in this alternate reality space world).

The underlying story is not that bad, but the entire book just feels like the longest unplayable unskipable intro into a video game ever. Too much time is spent re-explaining the same things over and over (i get how the fancy space microwave works, please dont tell me everytime you need to eat), and the relationships that are "built" seem rushed, and honestly kinda creepy at times. Again, underlying story is not that bad ... but I will not be reading the next installments.

Reborn as a Space Mercenary: A Hilarious and Action-Packed Sci-Fi Isekai Adventure

Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship! by Ryuto is a hilarious and action-packed sci-fi isekai adventure. The story follows the protagonist, Satou Takahiro, who is reborn as a space mercenary in another world. Satou quickly learns that this new world is a dangerous place, but he is also equipped with the strongest starship ever built, which gives him a significant advantage.

Satou uses his new powers and wealth to become a successful mercenary, but he also finds himself getting involved in all sorts of trouble. He has to deal with space pirates, corrupt governments, and even intergalactic threats.

Ryuto's writing is engaging and humorous, and he creates a cast of memorable characters. Satou is a likable and relatable protagonist, and his relationship with his crew is well-developed.

The plot of the novel is well-paced and full of exciting twists and turns. Ryuto does a great job of balancing action, adventure, and comedy.

One of the things that makes **_Reborn as a Space Mercenary_** so enjoyable is its unique setting. The novel takes place in a vast and diverse universe, and Ryuto does a great job of bringing it to life. The reader gets to visit different planets, galaxies, and dimensions, and each location is unique and memorable.

Another thing that sets the novel apart from other isekai novels is its focus on action and adventure. Satou is constantly getting into dangerous situations, and Ryuto does a great job of describing the action in a way that is both exciting and easy to visualize.

However, the novel is not without its flaws. One minor issue is that the characters can be a bit stereotypical at times. Additionally, the novel's ending is somewhat abrupt, and it leaves some unanswered questions.

I should probably admit up front that I am a little biased because this was one of the first manga I picked up years ago, so it has a bit of nostalgia for me. This was a really fun start to the series. The isekai premise is not new to me, but the sci-fi space quest is definitely new. The book kept a good balance of action, humor, and lighthearted adventure. The pacing was quick and easy to follow, which made it an enjoyable read from start to finish.

The MC is not super deep, but he is likable enough to carry the story, he isnt the typical incompetent MC common with these situations, and his interactions with the crew added a nice dynamic. The space battles were entertaining and written clearly, which kept the tension up without getting bogged down in technical details.

It is not trying to be a heavy or groundbreaking sci-fi, but it delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, fast-paced adventure with a bit of charm. I am definitely looking forward to continuing the series.

If you an anime fan looking for a quick read it's good.

Easy read. I would give it four stars but I would really like more detail or maybe that would ruin it. It's so simple I really felt like I was watching an anime when I wasn't reading this book. Example. I get on hull looking for that space anime I was watching when it was actually this book. So still good writing. If you want a quick read full of sci-fy fun you would like it. I loved taking a break from over detailed stories. I might go ahead and get the next volume.

When "Hiro" realizes he is now living in his dreamed spaceship inside the game he loves playing he is in disbelief but seeing the proof in front of him goes ahead with his new life. He is now on his new path, become a space mercenary and survive planetary adventures.
He is still mostly from Earth and this makes him get involved with a girl about to be raped. After saving her and making her part of his crew, he goes to war. Just to end up saving an Elf. Elma from indentured service. Al in all a fun book.

The book was entertaining enough, but it read like a male power fantasy. I had hoped for more space, ship, action, and less awkward teenager with two female crewmates drama. The author also wrote out every exclamation anyone in the book made. Just say the yelled, don’t feel the need to type it all out. That’s the mark of an amateur.

Great first book

Found this series first by reading the first chapters of the manga, liked it and decided to read the novel version for more.

This first book is just as great as the manga but with more background information.

The plot, while simple; it’s easy to follow and enjoy. The MC and his girls are good and funny to read about.

Looking forward to the next book.

The space battles are so stupid. Why can everyone hear what everyone else is saying? You can literally hear what your enemy is saying... HOW?

One pirate says "I'm going to launch homing missiles". The main character then says, "well that was easy to dodge, because he told me what he was going to do". THEY ARE FIGHTING IN SPACE. How are they hearing what everyone is saying!!!!!????

In battle, the pirates all talk like 12 year olds. They say stuff like: (these are direct quotes)
“Dammiiit! I’ll kill you!”
“Wargh!”
“Wha?! He’s fast!”
“S-stop! Mommy—!”

Was a nice easy read. I thought the plot was interesting, once you got past some of the cringe anime/light novel stuff. I think it has potential to be a really good story, it’ll be interesting to see what obstacles they put in his way to make him struggle. Things were so easy for him and his crew this time around, that there has to be bigger challenges as he goes through the other 18 books

Entertaining

I am a little thrown off by it switching to first-person with each character (using I did... rather than They/He/She did...) but other than that great story I plan to keep reading...
