காதல் கடிதம் [Kadhal Kaditham]
வைக்கம் முகம்மது பஷீரின் அச்சில் வெளியான முதல் நாவல் ‘காதல் கடிதம்’. 1943 இல் வெளியானது. ஒரு ‘தமாஷான கதை’ என்று எழுதியவரே குறிப்பிட்டாலும் இது வேடிக்கையான கதை மட்டுமல்ல. எழுதப்பட்ட காலத்தின் சமூகப் பழக்கத்தை எள்ளி நகையாடவும் காதலின் சிக்கலைப் பேசவும் காதலர்களின் சாதுரியங்களைப் பேசவும் செய்கிறது. பிற்காலத்தில் பஷீர் எழுதிய படைப்புகளின் ஆதார குணங்கள் இந்தத் தொடக்க கால நாவலிலேயே புலப்படுகின்றன. அநாயாசமாகச் செல்லும் கதையாடல், தனித்துவமான மொழி, கதாபாத்திரச் சித்தரிப்பில் மறைந்திருக்கும் நுட்பம் ஆகிய இயல்புகள் இந்தப் புனைவை முக்கியமானதாக்குகின்றன. எழுதப்பட்டு முக்கால் நூற்றாண்டுக் காலத்துக்குப் பின்பும் வாசிப்புக்கு உகந்ததாகவும் காலத்துக்குப் பொருந்தியதாகவும் இந்த நாவல் நிலைபெற்றிருப்பது பஷீரின் மேதைமையால் மட்டுமே. காலம் பஷீரைக் கடந்து செல்லவில்லை. மாறாக பஷீர் காலத்தைத் தாண்டிச் செல்கிறார் என்பதை ‘காதல் கடிதம்’ உறுதிப்படுத்துகிறது.

This is one of the best love stories ever written in Malayalam. Basheer wrote it when he was in jail in 1942.
A feel-good evergreen love story is the best tagline for this novel. The peculiarity of works by Basheer is that we will feel that it is his best work while reading it.
This is indeed a beautiful love story that transcends generations and is relevant even today even after almost a century after first publishing it.

ബഷീറിന്റെ പ്രേമലേഖനം എന്ന നോവല് ഞാന് ആദ്യമായി കേള്ക്കുന്നത് ഒരു കഥാപ്രസംഗരൂപത്തില് ആണ്.
സ്കൂളില് പുസ്തകമേള നടന്നപ്പോള് ഞാന് ഈ പുസ്തകം 40 രൂപയ്ക്ക് വാങ്ങിച്ചു.ഇതു ഞാന് കുറച്ചു കുറച്ചു സമയം എടുത്തു രണ്ടു ദിവസം കൊണ്ട് വായിച്ചു.ഒന്നിരുന്നാല് ഒരു അര മണിക്കൂര് അത്രയുമേ ഉള്ളൂ.കേശവന് നായരും സാറാമ്മയും ആണ് ഈ കഥയിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്.കേശവന് നായരെ പ്രേമിക്കുക എന്നുള്ള ജോലിയാണ് സാറാമ്മയ്ക്കുള്ളത്.മാസം ഇരുപതു രൂപയ്ക്ക് സാറാമ്മ കേശവന് നായരെ പ്രേമിക്കുകയാണ്.ആലിംഗനം ചെയ്യണം എന്ന് കേശവന് നായര്ക്കു അതിയായ ആഗ്രഹം ഉണ്ട്.ആണല്ലേ.പക്ഷെ സാറാമ്മ വഴങ്ങുകില്ല.പെണ്ണല്ലേ.അപ്പോഴാണ് വേര്പിരിയലിന്റെ സമയം എത്തിയത്.കേശവന് നായര്ക്കു കുറച്ചകലെ ഒരു സ്ഥലത്ത് ഒരു നല്ല ജോലി തരമായിട്ടുണ്ട്.സാറാമ്മയും കൂടെ വരണം എന്ന് കേശവന് നായര് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു.പക്ഷെ സാറാമ്മ പിടികൊടുത്തില്ല.പക്ഷെ ചര്ച്ചക്കിടയില് തങ്ങള്ക്കുണ്ടാകുന്ന കുട്ടിക്ക് എന്ത് പേരിടണം എന്നുവരെ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.പിറ്റേ ദിവസം രാവിലെ പോകാന് നേരം സാറാമ്മയോട് യാത്ര പറയാന് ചെന്നപ്പോള് സാറാമ്മ മുറിയില് ഇല്ല.മേശപ്പുറത്തു അപ്പച്ചനും ചിറ്റമ്മയ്ക്കുമുള്ള കത്ത് കണ്ടു.അതില് എങ്ങനെ എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നു.എനിക്ക് കുറച്ചകലെ ഒരു നല്ല ജോലി കിട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു.കൂടാതെ ഒരു നല്ല ഭര്ത്താവിനെയും.ഞാന് പോകുന്നു.ഇതു കണ്ട കേശവന് നായര് നേരെ റെയില്വേ സ്റ്റേഷനില് ചെന്നപ്പോള് അവിടെയുണ്ട് നമ്മുടെ സാറാമ്മ.പിന്നീട് ആഹ്ലാതത്തോടുള്ള ഒരു നീണ്ട ചൂളം വിളിയാല് ജീവിത യാത്ര ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു.ഇതാണ് കഥയുടെ ഉള്ളടക്കം.പക്ഷെ എല്ലാറ്റിനും ആദ്യം കേശവന് നായര് സാറാമ്മയുടെ പിറകെ കുറച്ചുകാലം നടന്നിരുന്നു.അപ്പോള് ഒരു പ്രേമലേഖനവും കൊടുത്തിരുന്നു.ആ പ്രേമ ലേഖനത്തോടെ ആണ് കഥ തുടങ്ങുന്നത് അവസാനിക്കുന്നതും.അത് ഇങ്ങനെ ആണ്;"പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട സാറാമ്മേ ജീവിതം യവ്വനതീഷ്ണവും,ഹൃദയം പ്രേമസുരഭിലവും ആയിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ അസുലഭകാലഘട്ടത്തെ.......................................

ഇത്രയും സന്തോഷം പകരുന്ന ഒരു കൃതി മലയാളത്തിലില്ലെന്നാണ് എനിയ്ക്കു തോന്നുന്നത്. അവിശ്വസനീയമാം വിധം ചിരിയുണർത്തുന്ന ഒന്ന്. എത്ര തവണ വായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നു തന്നെ ഓർക്കാനാകുന്നില്ല.

ബഷീറിന്റെ എല്ലാ കൃതികളും സാധാരണക്കാരന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ ചലനങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ട്ടിക്കാൻ പോന്നവയാണ് .. ! തന്റേതായ, തനതായ, ഒരു ശൈലി കൊണ്ട് മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിലെ നിരൂപകന്മാരുടെ വായ മൂടികെട്ടിയ പ്രതിഭാധനനാണ് അദ്ധേഹം ..!! കേശവൻ നായരുടെയും സാറാമ്മയുടെയും വ്യത്യസ��തമായ പ്രേമകഥ അന്നത്തെ സമൂഹത്തിനു കല്ലുകടി ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിലും, ഇന്ന് അത് എത്ര ശെരിയാണ് .. ബഷീർ എന്ന മഹാനായ എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ മഹത്തായ മറ്റൊരു സൃഷ്ട്ടി .. :)

One can't just get enough of the works of the Sultan of Bepur. His unparalleled way of story telling shows us only one thing. Only one who has truly experienced life can laugh at it. His ability to struck chords with the readers while saying the most simplest stories is what makes him so great. Same is the case with Premalekhanam. One has to read it to experience it.

This was such a funny story and Basheer manages to say so much using only a few words. The writing is witty, descriptive and so engaging. I fully laughed out loud when at the end they refer to each other as Sky Candy’s mum or Sky Candy’s dad. The characters are a bit pathetic but sympathetic as well and so insanely well written which is seen in how they balance each other out. For example the guy is not too smart and a bit annoying. The girl in turn often takes joy in spurning the guy and being excessively harsh (although I would say he has it coming in the beginning.)
Their romance is inter- faith and the discussion they have around the logistics of this shows depth and is simultaneously hilarious.

ബാങ്ക് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായ കേശവൻ ഒരു ലോഡ്ജിൽ താമസിക്കുന്നു. അതിന് തൊട്ടടുത്താണ് സാറാമ്മയും കുടുംബം താമസിക്കുന്നത്. സാറാമ്മയുടെ വീട്ടിൽ അച്ഛനും രണ്ടാനമ്മയും മാത്രമേയുള്ളൂ. ജീവിതം ആണെങ്കിലോ ദുരിതപൂർണ്ണവും. കേശവൻനായർക്ക് ഈ സാറാമ്മയോട് പ്രണയം തോന്നി. അവൾക്ക് പ്രേമലേഖനം എഴുതി ചുരുട്ടി എറിഞ്ഞുകൊടുത്തു. അങ്ങനെ തുടങ്ങിയ ഒരു പ്രണയത്തിന്റേയും ഒരു നല്ല പ്രണയ പര്യവസാനത്തിന്റേയും കഥ ആണിത്. വായിക്കുന്ന ആളുകൾക്ക് ഒരു മാനസിക സുഖം തരാൻ കഴിവുള്ള നല്ല രചനകളിൽ ഒന്ന്.
