She wakes to the sound of footsteps outside her secluded home. Moving toward the window, she scans the dark woods around her and freezes. A tall figure in a long dark coat holds a crossbow pointed right at her. She blinks as lightning cracks overhead. But when she opens her eyes, the figure has vanished…

When the body of a man is found in the dense forest surrounding Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton immediately sees disturbing similarities with a past case—the same murder weapon, the remote beauty spot, and the way the victim is perched against a tree with no sign of a struggle. But the killer in that case was jailed for life.

Jenna suspects a copycat killer and her fears are confirmed when, during the town’s Halloween festival, the bodies of two tourists are found further down the remote trail. They too had been hunted down and murdered in another picturesque spot and all Jenna can hope is that the man behind bars can help her catch the twisted monster behind these new deaths.

As she comes face to face with the vicious murderer who has haunted her dreams for years, she is sure he knows more than he’s telling her. Looking deep into Jenna’s eyes, as if they’re two old friends catching up, he promises to take his final revenge on her for locking him up. But before she can learn more, he is dragged away by prison guards.

When a sudden emergency call takes Jenna and her deputy David Kane deep into the woods, Jenna senses something is very wrong about the situation. As a strange calmness falls over the forest, a familiar face emerges from the shadows. Will this killer be the one who finally takes down Sheriff Alton, and can they make it out of the forest alive?

Another winner from DK Hood! Book 12 and still no signs of letting up. Kane and Alton. The stories, the series tings, the characters... all still as strong as ever. Set at Halloween in Black Rock Falls, it is dark and creepy and intense.. just how I like them.

Why anyone would want to go to Black Rock Falls is beyond me! It feels like the murder capital of the world and we have plenty more bodies this time to add to the count. Starting with Jenna being attacked in her home during a storm which Dave is away and leading into a puzzling case f bodies being found in very similar circumstances as a case that put away a vile psychopath. But he is still behind bars... Is this a copycat or something more sinister?

Thanks so much to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read.

Cross My Heart is the twelfth instalment in the Detectives Jenna Alton and David Kane series set in Black Rock Falls, Montana. It's October and approaching Halloween in the serial killing capital of Montana — despite only being a small, scenic town — when Sherriff Alton is home alone during a dry storm and her evening turns into a nightmare-inducing hell. She's shaken up already by the thunderous claps above her head, the huge flashes of lightning streaking across the sky and the brisk wind, but nothing could've prepared her for what was about to happen. She heads to bed for an early night but is rudely awoken by the snarling of her black cat, Pumpkin. She hears thumps and the lights refuse to turn on when she rises to investigate. The intruder has managed to bypass the extensive security system, turn off the main power supply and the backup generator and make their way inside. Although she manages to flee to a panic room before she can be attacked, the one person she would've called upon for help, Kane, had taken the opportunity of attending a criminal profiling seminar out of town. Meanwhile, married couple June and Peyton Harris had been camping on a wildly windy Thursday night in Stanton Forest when June had awoken to the startling sound of a thud and a desperate cry. But when she reaches for her husband his sleeping bag is empty and he has seemingly vanished. The campfire burns away just outside the tent flap but he isn't out there either.

The pair are tourists to the area and sadly June discovers Peyton’s body propped up against a tree nearby, glassy-eyed and with a crossbow piercing his forehead: dead. When Kane and Alton are called to the crime scene, not only do they discover that June has vanished, but they also recognise the modus operandi as that of a brutal convicted serial killer and stalker of Sherriff Alton, James Stone, but how could he be involved when he's in a maximum-security prison with no contact permitted with the outside world? Then, a short time later, another couple is found dead in the exact same fashion as the killers previous handiwork, and Kane and Alton are bewildered when the two suspects they pinpoint both have seemingly rock-solid alibis. This is a scintillating, multi-layered and compulsively readable procedural and undoubtedly the most enthralling so far in this excellent series. The seasonal, autumnal weather and the Halloween timing creates an oppressive and bleakly atmospheric undertone to the whole story, which adds a deepening sense of doom to it all with the overcast days and dark, stormy nights. There are twists, turns and several incidences of dizzying misdirection, a possible copycat killer on the loose, someone seeking revenge against Jenna who is more exposed than ever during this episode with Kane out of the picture. This is nothing less than a riveting and superbly woven thrill ride from beginning to denouement. Highly recommended.

Detectives Kane and Alton Book 12

She wakes to hear the sound of footsteps outside her secluded home. Moving towards the window, she scans the dark woods behind her and freezes. A tall figure in a long dark coat holds a crossboow pointed right at her. She blinks as lightening cracks overhead. But when she opens her eyes the figure has vanished. When the body of a man in found in the dense forest surrounding Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton immediately sees disturbing similarities with a past case - the same murder weapon, the remote beauty spot, and the way the victim is perched against the tree. But the killer for that case was jailed for life.

It's approaching Halloween in Black Rock Falls. While Kane is away on a business trip, Jemma Alton is under attack in her own home. Then a dead body is found in the woods, his wife is missing. Then another couple are found dead in the woods. Is this another serial killer Jenna and her team have to find?

Sheriff Jenna Alton thinks it's her old nemesis James Stone that's behind the killings but he's serving a life sentence in prison. The pace is fast with plenty of twists. I did kind of guess what was happening but not how it all slotted together. This intense crime thriller had me on the edge of my seat. My all time favourites book in this series so far.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Boukouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #CrossMyHeart in exchange for an honest review.

“It was a perfect day for hunting humans”

Oh My Goodness! How I so wish that I had been in on this series right from the beginning, as this tight knit little team of crime busters tick all the boxes and then some, for me!

Don’t get me wrong. This book works more than well as a stand alone story. However all those tantalising titbits of backstory, which are woven into the plot so adroitly by the author, only made me want more, and I strongly suspect that this series has just been getting better and better with each new episode.

I hit the ground running right from the very first page. The action was then non-stop and frenetic throughout, with so many heart-stopping moments that I don’t think I actually had time to draw breath until the very last line had been devoured. Especially as I do quite like my protagonists to live to fight another day and on this occasion Jenna and Dave only made it out by the skin of their teeth.

There is no doubt that this author has a very vivid and one might almost say, ‘twisted’ imagination, in a nice way of course, and I loved the direction she took with this well structured storyline, which definitely stirred all the emotions along the way. A wonderfully textured, truly gripping and desperately intense experience, written by a born storyteller, with consummate ease, complete confidence and total authority. The complexities of introducing multiple suspects in such a unique way, certainly tested the mental stamina of both Jenna and myself, as neither of us really knew what was actually happening until almost the eleventh hour, so we were both left clinging to reality by a thread for much of the journey through this mind-bending, killing frenzy. When events from the past come back to haunt their present and indeed, their very future, Jenna and Dave need to keep their wits about them and stay strong for each other, which Dave in particular prides himself on being able to do. Jenna however, is definitely not out to take any prisoners this time, forcing all of her doubts and vulnerabilities to one side, especially when their adversary sets out to convince her that her troubled mind is playing tricks on her.

It sounds as though this rural area of Montana has seen more than its fair share of serial killers, however Jenna and Dave, as law enforcement officers with a past they would rather have left behind them, definitely seem to be attracting more than the usual amount of attention from a disparate cross-section of the criminal population, all with one thing in common – the thrill of the hunt and the sickening satisfaction of the kill! When off duty, they live as virtual prisoners inside a remote and highly guarded, hi-tech compound. When on duty, they have the support of a highly qualified, professional team, whose hard work and loyalty are unparalleled, which is just as well when the body count is stacking up and disturbingly, your main suspect is tucked away in virtual solitary confinement, behind bars.

If you are an ‘armchair traveller’ with a nervous disposition – beware! Skilled at channelling the powerful imagery of her words, the author exploits some assured, observational and descriptive narrative, to evoke a genuine sense of time and place, putting me at the front and centre of the action, in the dark and foreboding mountains of Montana during the dry storm season, where every crack of thunder or bolt of lightening had the potential to start an uncontrollable fire, or at the very least frighten me into running for cover knowing that there is at least one sadist out there, hunting me with both gun and crossbow and a crack shot with both!

The author has developed an excellent cast of totally believable and lifelike characters to populate this series, who have obviously grown into their roles over the course of time. Even taking into account the more than slightly shady reputations many of them seem to have acquired previously in the various security and agency sectors they are drawn together from, I found myself liking and relating to them all, even though I probably shouldn’t have. The synergy between them, together with the unspoken, tacit understanding of any given situation, was like bearing witness to a silent film, as they each went about their individual tasks in hand, towards capturing an assailant who had made this personal vendetta against Jenna a ‘do or die’ mission, and which they had collectively decided means, ‘take on one of us, be prepared to take on all of us!’

No good story would be complete without the inclusion of a canine companion and in this instance, Dave’s bloodhound Duke, proves to be as protective, faithful and obedient as any handler could wish for.

D.K. Hood provides a strong series, adding to it with a stellar novel here. Building on past stories and adding great ideas for future novels, Hood creates a wonderful reading experience. A killer has been hunting people with a crossbow and sending chills throughout the community. Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane rush to help, discovering that the killer has been emulating someone they put away in years past. The killings ramp up and the terror increases as Hallowe’en creeps closer. Hood keeps things on track to stay of the highest quality and provides the reader with a sensational experience.

With sounds of footsteps echoing in her house, she wakes and wonders. A sight outside the window provides an additional chill as a shadow lurks just out of the moonlight. Outside, a man waits for her to realize, a crossbow pointed in her direction. She sees a flash of lightening before the figure disappears, leaving her wondering what’s to come.

The body of a man is found in the dense forest around Black Rock Falls, a crossbow bolt rammed in the head. Sheriff Jenna Alton arrives at the scene and sees a number of similarities to a past case she worked. The weapon and locale are
eerily familiar, but that killer has been securely kept in prison for years already. This adds to the confusion and worry:

Jenna presumed this must be a copycat killer. During the town’s Hallowe’en festival, all is confirmed as two tourists are murdered along the trail in the same crossbow fashion. It appears they were chased and hunted down, before being killed by a skilled hunter. Sheriff Alton turns to the man she put away, hoping that he can help shed some light on the killing and how to catch the perpetrator.

Bracing herself, Jenna faces him head on and hopes for some answers. However, it appears as though he knows more than he will share, hoping their past prior to incarceration will spark anew. When he agrees to help, things take a turn and the prison guards drag him off before he can share too much.

An emergency sends Sheriff Alton and Deputy Dave Kane into the forest to investigate. There, a killer comes face to face with them and shows just how cunning he can be. In a moment of weakness, neither Kane nor Alton are ready for what awaits them and the killer’s motives come to life. Now, it will be a race to see if they can survive and bring justice to pass. Hood does a great job at keeping the reader hooked.

D.K. Hood does not stop with these great serial killer stories. The narrative provides a strong guide to keep the story moving in a forward direction. I cannot wait to see what is to come, as Hood never appears to run out of ideas. This story builds on a past piece, but shows some of its own individuality. Hood keeps the momentum going and the reader highly entertained.

Character development is key to the series’ success, which has proven to be key to many of the novels. Jenna Alton and Dave Kane have numerous layers, all of which are developed effectively. Their ongoing connection keeps series fans wondering when things might transpire. Secondary characters stay rooted and provide a form of entertainment, linking to the protagonists easily, while also engaging the reader stories to provide something substantive.

The series relies on major twists and story arcs. Hood never disappoints with her development, building on the past while looking to the future. The suspense this creates is sure to impress the reader, particularly series fans. These novels continue and the series has not waned.
I am always excited about where things are headed.l, particularly as each story appears to build on the tension fostered by the last few novels.

Kudos, Madam Hood, as you keep things exciting and intriguing.

Ooh I love this series!
Jenna really gets put through her paces in this book and Kane is there to support her, but can tell she is struggling.
The book begins with an attack on Jenna’s home and with Kane away for the weekend she’s on her own. This is a terrifying attack and with the phone lines down she has to take cover in the safe room.
Kane returns the next day to see the devastating damage and with Jo and Ty with him, they offer to help find who did this.
Due to a storm Jenna couldn’t see the person on her property very well but the message left behind takes her back to a case that her and Kane very nearly didn’t survive.
Jenna is sure Stone is involved when a man is found having been shot by a crossbow, which was Stone’s signature weapon.
More people are found dead also with the fatal wound caused by a crossbow and Jenna keeps seeing a man in the shadows, watching her.
The story builds to a nail biting conclusion in the forest and we finally find out who wants Jenna dead.
This is a gripping crime thriller and a great addition to this brilliant series.
I can’t wait for the next one!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

This is an utterly terrifying mystery. A vicious serial killer, arrested by Jenna and Kane a couple of years ago, is stalking Jenna again. But he is locked up in prison. Isn't he?

Adding to this, Jenna suffers a vicious attack on her home during a lightening storm. It is a man in a slicker and cowboy hat who is shooting crossbolts at her.

The reader is treated to the return of Kane, Jenna, Wolfe, Rowley, Rio, Jo, Carter and of course, Duke and Zorro in this, the latest offering in the Jenna and Kane series.

A man is found tied to a tree in the forest. He was shot through the head with a crossbow and is soaked with gasoline. His wife is missing. The locals noticed this man speaking to the couple and the man is arrested and charged. The man is arrogant and acts just way too cool. However, while he is incarcerated, another murder takes place. He couldn't have committed that one. What is going on?

Another suspect is interviewed and he is just as cool as the first guy.

Jenna and Jo decide to interview Stone in prison. He is rude and acts very familiar with Jenna. She feels marginally better with Kane and Carter in the next room. The warden assures the detectives that Stone has absolutely no contact with the outside. But, does he?

The current killings are too much like his past murders.

This book describes a conspiracy of bizarre proportions. In a very exciting climax, it all becomes clear.

This book is extremely well written and plotted. The transitions are flawless. We learn a little more about the main characters, but it doesn't intrude on the story at all. I like all of the main characters. Kane is wonderful, Jenna can be a little obsessed. Jo and Carter are very competent. Wolfe adds a wonderful dimension to the story.

I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this most exciting book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Cross my Heart, the twelfth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane of the Black Rock Falls, Montana Sheriff’s Office.

When a body is found in the local forest the way he is killed reminds Jenna of an old case and a psychopathic killer she put behind bars. When more bodies are found she is convinced he is manipulating events from prison, Dave thinks it’s more likely to be a copycat.

I thoroughly enjoyed Cross my Heart, which is a heart pounding read full of thrills, spills and tension. As ever the narrative switches between the investigators and the unnamed killer and it works well. If the opening attack on Jenna’s home doesn’t give the game away, that his focus is on her, then his thoughts certainly will. It ratchets up the tension with Jenna frightened, convinced that her nemesis will come for her, and him confirming it.

I wasn’t too enthusiastic about what I saw as a reworking of a previous novel, but I have to admit that the author has outdone herself. She takes an old premise, makes it into something completely different and totally fooled me. It won’t go down as the most realistic novel ever written, but that’s hardly important when it’s so entertaining. There is rarely a dull moment and the final showdown scene and denouement are even better than the norm in the series. 10/10 for imagination.

Black Rock Falls is serial killer central in this series as they seem to get a new one every couple of months, but that isn’t an issue for the Sheriff’s Office because Jenna, Dave and the medical examiner, Shane Wolfe, all have pasts as top level government operators and access to restricted equipment. It’s another reality pushing scenario but who cares as it makes the read fun. Jenna and Dave have grown closer as the series progresses, so I keep hoping to hear the patter of tiny feet as it seems like a natural progression but I suspect it would end the series. They could hardly risk life and limb on a regular basis with dependents.

Cross my Heart is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Cross My Heart is the twelfth book in the police procedural series featuring Detectives David Kane and Jenna Alton. I picked up this series with Whisper in the Night (book 6) and I also thoroughly enjoyed books seven through to eleven.

Set in Black Rock Falls, Montana, Sheriff Jenna Alton makes a very likeable detective. Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small town, which has certainly seen more than its fair share of murders! Her deputy, David Kane is a former Special Forces marksman with exceptional profiling skills.

In this instalment, Halloween is fast approaching in Montana. Jenna is at home on her own during an electrical storm. She turns in early and is later awoken by her cat. She hears noises but the lights aren't working when she goes to check them out. An intruder has managed to bypass all her security systems and gain entry into her home, but she flees to her secure room.

Meanwhile, June Harris is camping in the area with her husband, Payton in Stanton Forest when June is startled awake but she finds Peyton's sleeping bag empty. June discovers Payton’s dead body propped up against a tree nearby with an arrow sticking in his forehead. The way in which he has been killed reminds Jenna of another case and a psychopathic killer she put behind bars. When more dead tourists are found Jenna is convinced that the psychopath is controlling events from prison, but there could be a copycat killer.

As I knew it would be, this novel was a well balanced, electrifying and solid police procedural that had me glued to the pages. I didn't want to put it down as I was desperate to know the outcome of the story. This really was a spectacular, chilling and atmospheric crime-thriller that grabbed me hook, line and sinker. The team embarked on an exciting and exhilarating mission and all the time the tension snowballed as D.K. Hood launched at me some captivating misdirection. The writing flowed effortlessly and swiftly in a story rich in drama, action and revenge, culminating in an explosive conclusion.

I will be seeking out the first five instalments of this masterful series. A brilliant, compelling, pulse-pounding and very highly recommended crime-thriller.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Cross My Heart' by D.K Hood.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for D.K Hood, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 7th July 2021.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the twelfth book in the 'Detectives Kane and Alton' series but can be read as a standalone.

I was originally drawn to this book by its gorgeous cover and gripping sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'If you love heart-racing crime books by authors like Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot, you will love this exciting thriller from USA Today bestselling author D.K. Hood.' I am a huge fan of Lisa, Melinda and Kendra so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 52 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Black Rock Falls, Australia 🇦🇺.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Sheriff Jenna Alton and Detective David Kane. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

What did I just read and why have I not read any of this series before?!?! What an absolutely page turning, heart racing read!!

Before I start reading any books I always double check to see if I have read any books by the author before and I was absolutely shocked to realise this is the first book I have read by D.K Hood. I could have sworn I've read her books before. Well I most certainly will be reading more in the future!!! This book is fantastically written and had me hooked from the first page until the last. The descriptions were so vivid and realistic I felt myself hearing thunder and seeing shadows in the forest. The storyline is packed with tension, suspense, murder, tension and filled with twists and turns. I was absolutely shocked when everything was revealed and was not expecting it at all!!! A HUGE congratulations to D.K Hood, it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you did it well!!! I also enjoyed the fact that everything was explained at the end as I hate loose ends and when something is mentioned or happens in a book and then is forgotten about. D.K Hood has obviously done her research on police procedurals which is yet another bonus as I've read many crime novels where the authors make massive mistakes due to not doing enough research. This may be the 12th book in the series but I had no problems reading it as a standalone. Any relationships, friendships and past cases mentioned are explained in just the right amount of detail so new readers of this gripping series understand what's happened previously but not too much that previous readers get bored by repetition. This is an absolutely unputdownable page turner and I cannot wait to read the previous and future books in what is promising to be an addictive series.

The characters are realistic and I became completely invested in them. I love that Jenna is such a strong female lead that has history and has been through so much but doesn't cower and stands strong. I enjoyed watching her relationship with Kane and I am looking forward to going back to how they met and moving forward to see where it goes. Kane is another fantastic character that I became invested in and I adore how protective of Jenna he is. The team dynamics worked well and I also enjoyed getting to know more about Rio, Wolfe and Rowley and I look forward to meeting them all again. I must say my favourite had to be Duke though!!!! What an absolutely fantastic addition, I just love it when pets play such large parts in books.

Congratulations D.K Hood on what promises to be a huge success!!! I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your books and I would like to welcome you to my favourite crime author list!!!

Overall an absolutely addictive, heart racing and unputdownable crime thriller that will keep you up all night

Genres covered in this book include Police Procedural, Suspense, Mystery, Thriller, Noir Fiction and Crime Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh, Angela Marsons, Carol Wyer, Kendra Elliot and anyone looking for a heart racing new series to start

290 pages.

This book is just £2.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

How is this book 12 when each book is so new and captures your whole attention? I was on the edge of my seat and terrified more than once. Halloween in Black Rock Falls - NEVER! A serial killer and stalker of Jenna keep the team very busy. No more out of town weekends for Deputy Kane. Please let me have the next, the 13th book soon. I am scared already. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for the privilege of reading and reviewing this book.

Cross My Heart was a heart pounding book in the Kane & Alton series. This book was especially thrilling as it sees Jenna come face to face with a disturbing individual from her past. I loved that the book had so many twists, so much action and so much thrill. The number of red herrings in the book couldn't let me pinpoint as to who the perp was so the end was a surprise! The plot was brutal but interesting. There was a lot of blood involved but Black Rock Falls does attract the very depraved individuals. Statistically its near improbable but I read the books for the thrill and it delivers each and every time with each installment.

Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture & D. K. Hood for the arc!

The books just keep getting better and better, this one had some chilling parts and I had a few oh no moments. I was worried that now that Jenna and Kane are romantically involved that it would take away from the dynamic of the story but thankfully it didn’t. I got this as an Arc to review and I would like to thank the publishers and Netgalley for letting me have the book to read

First off a huge thank you to the publisher Bookouture , the author D.K.Hood as well as to NetGalley for the invite to join the blog tour as well as letting me read and review it and for letting me continuing on with one of my all time favorite series. This is a series I will never get tried of reading, and just like the others I got lost in it, loved how it was even more twisted then the last one was and I got to see more of my all time favorite characters, and revisit my favorite town plus other thing about this series I love is I can read it out of order which I tend to do sometimes with series. As for the plot of the story its will written and is non stop from the start, and ever turn of the page has you on the edge of your set as well as trying to guess who is the killer or killers. As will as like I said its even more twisted then the others , it'll give you goosebumps and send shivers down your spin, like it did me, and I was reading doing a thunder storm which is the perfect time in my opinion to read a thriller.

Thanks so much to #netgalley and #bookouture for the opportunity to read and review "Cross My Heart", the 12th and newest book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series in return for a fair and honest review.

Well, wasn't that a rollercoaster ride! Just when I think that DK Hood's series can't get any better, it does.

Welcome back to Black Rock Falls, where the temperature can go from zero to serial killer in a second, it's coming up on Halloween (and friends, if I lived there I'd make sure I was far, far away at this time of year - like maybe a war zone - where I'd be safer) and the terror meter has been ramped up to 11.

It starts with a brutal assault on Jenna Alton's home in the middle of a 'dry storm' (thunder, lightning, wind, but no rain) that leaves her shaken to the core. Even though she was unhurt, the attacker managed to get by the security system, disable the power, turn off the back up generator and get inside! Leaving Jenna trapped in the impregnable safe room until help could arrive. Subsequently, the entire system has to be rebuilt - at the order of the most powerful man in the nation.

While recovering from this invasion, Jenna and Dave and the rest of the crew are called to the Stanton Woods, where the body of a man has been found - and his wife is missing (although a clue was left at the scene of the ranch assault). And the MO of this killing is identical to that of convicted serial killer - and stalker of Sheriff Alton - James Stone; but he's locked away in maximum security and has no contact with the outer world, so how could this be.

And when another couple is found dead in the same manner as James Stone's previous killings, Dave and Jenna end up with two suspects who have two alibis! And the man who Jenna saw during the assault on her home seems to keep popping up around town, whenever she's alone. (Ms. Hood amps up the scary with many days and nights of fog swirling around town.)

This highly-charged book is simply one of the best in the series, and Ms. Hood's understanding of her characters is evidenced by some of the dialogue:
"Oh, that can’t be good." (Fowler)
"Cute little town you have here." (Ty Carter)
"We’ve had our share of unusual cases, but this is the first one to leave an ear as a calling card." (Dave Kane)
"What happened to this place?" (Rio) "Murder." (Rowley)

It all comes to a head when one of their crew is kidnapped, and Dave and Jenna head off into the Stanton Woods to rescue him - and end up in a fight for their lives during a lightning-strike-caused forest fire. Fasten your seatbelts, readers, it's a gloriously bumpy ride.

You really should read the whole series, but this book and the others can work on their

back in the world of kane and alton...love it

jenna has the place to herself as kane is off to some meeting that he wanted to attend...but during the night the cat and dog wake her up at first jenna thinks it because of the electric storm raging overhead but not before long jenna realises that someone is trying to break into her house

she cant ring out as the power is out and as the attack gets closer and closer jenna retreats back into her safe room with the animals...before long the perp is trying to get into her safe room and they totally trash her house...she only has to wait till morning before help comes but its a long night..

unaware of the danger jenna is in kane is about to have breakfast when the call goes up.. jenna isnt answering her phone

wow this was a pretty gruesome ride as more people go missing and turn up mutilated, can kane and alton work out what is going on before things escalate

and why do all roads lead back to stone as each crime scene is reminiscent of his crimes....but hes in jail..

Loved it! Big series by D.K. But what a thriller. I’m hit or miss on grabbing these books in order but they never fail to make me squirm. This one takes place during Halloween and the psychos are out in force!

What did I like? Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane investigate some terror on the hiking trail that look a lot like a copy cat murder. These kills give me the chills as they investigate more than one possible killer. The terror does not slow down in this one and keeps you on your toes. Five stars!

Would I recommend or buy? I’d recommend the whole series to be honest! Thrills and chills! Need something to keep you awake at night? Highly recommend this intense thriller!

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review.

I’ve been reading this series for a while now and every time I pick up a new book, I feel like a child when get a new type of candy.

To say that I’m enjoying them immensely is an understatement but what makes me more intrigued every time is the complicated twists that I know I will always find in any of these books.

I hate Halloween and probably that’s why this one was even more creepy for me. But I powered through from the beginning to the end and wasn’t disappointed at all.

The description says it all in the most part, it’s gripping and interesting plot will keep you on the edge to find out who is the culprit.

So if you’re looking for a great quality time spending reading a thriller that will keep you engaged and wondering throughout the book, this story is a must read then.

**Hold, please, while I catch my breath**
Holy smokes! This book is one intense ride, I didn't want to put it down. I was up until 2 am and had to force myself to go to sleep. Then I woke up and needed to finish it! The Detectives Kane and Alton Series is one of my favorite crime thriller series and this is book number twelve in the series.

A body is found in the forest Black Rock Falls and there similarities to a previous case that are eerily familiar to Sheriff Alton. That monster is behind bars with no contact with the outside world so it has to be a copycat killer. How does the killer know details that were never released to the public? The only way to find out is for Jenna to face the psychopath she put behind bars years ago. One thing is for sure, they need to find the killer before he kills again.

I think this might be my favorite book in the series. You can read it as a standalone, but I recommend reading them all. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

What can I say about this book? I think there are not enough superlatives to describe how good it was yet again, but I am going to try anyway.

You might remember I crowned this author my queen of creepiness and she delivers another amazing and brilliant book that had chills running a marathon up and down my spine.

Jenna and her team are dealing with another psychopath. Nothing new there. They are quite used to having them using Black Rock Falls as their favorite playground, but this one seems to be the emperor of the psychopaths.

He is a smart cookie and up to a point his scheming really works. It drives the whole force crazy, but when push comes to shove, the good ones succeed each and every time even though it sometimes is a very close call.

You sometimes think, this series is so good and every book is a piece of art, can the next one still be as good? Well, yes, it seems it’s possible and I can even say more. They get better and better. It will be a sad day when and if Kane and Alton decide to retire. I would miss them terribly.

It’s an amazing feeling being able to read such wonderful books. 5 stars.

Thank you, D.K. Hood and Bookouture

3.5 stars

Cross My Heart by D.K. Hood is the 12th in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background:   (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Former DEA, Jenna Alton is now the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana.  Her past is a secret.  Deputy David Kane's background is also a secret.  He was a Special Forces sharpshooter, and a bodyguard to the President.  Then there is Forensic Scientist Shane Wolfe, who is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Jenna's ranch is broken into while Kane is away.  Power is cut and so is the generator. Jenna has no cell phone  or land line, but she does have a safe room, which is where she stays until she is rescued. The destruction is immense, and the worst is the woman's ear that is attached to her porch by the bolt of a crossbow, with a message only one person could have left.  But he is in jail, with no outside access.

When the body of a man is found in the forest and his wife missing, Jenna immediately sees similarities to the past case which saw both herself and Kane in trouble.  But Stone is in jail for life, so Jenna suspects that there is a copycat killer out there, and someone is hunting them, just as Stone had done.

Yet Jenna is still convinced that Stone is behind everything, although she doesn't have a whole lot of backers.  Even Kane believes she has an over-active imagination.

My Opinions:
Again, this author has the female "lead" playing the damsel in distress.  If that isn't bad enough, they call in the FBI because they couldn't possibly solve a case on their own.  Therefore, I'm not overly fond of either of the main characters.  As well, I am still having a few problems with a couple of the secondary characters, but Carter wasn't quite as obnoxious in this one, and Rio was useful.

If the plots weren't so good, I would not be reading this series, just due to my dislike of the characters.  However, the plots are really good, and discovering the perpetrator amid the numerous suspects is always fun.

This book was a fast, entertaining read.

Bottom line, as long as the plots remain good, I will continue reading this series.

Black Rock Falls is not a place for the faint hearted, murder central could be its alternative name! It does however have red hot deputies and a totally committed sheriff to catch the serial killers who head towards its vast swathes of forest and mountain resorts. When a visiting tourist is found dead with his wife missing it seems as if Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team have a copycat killer as this isn't the first person they have encountered who murders this way, but he won't ever see the light of day again.

With her trusted chief deputy, Dave Kane, at her side, Jenna begins an investigation which chills her to the bone. The original killer still haunts her dreams and has pushed her to the brink more than once. This time however, the whole investigation seems to teeter on the edge between reality and a nightmare world of deja-vous even though Jenna knows it can't be him. With Halloween just around the corner it appears not all the monsters in town are just for decoration.

Once again D K Hood has put Jenna and Dave through the emotional wringer and taken her readers along with them! The storyline is as original and scary as ever with hints at what happened in a previous book adding to the tension levels which are pretty high right from the get go and never once let up. This can still be read as a standalone but is part of such a terrific series that starting at the beginning means you get to experience the whole terrifying effect of living in Black Rock Falls!

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is brilliant, nothing more needs to be said.

What a tense and exciting detective novel and it’s set during my favourite time of the year, Halloween. I loved the stormy weather, mist and pumpkins. They added a sinister backdrop to the most heinous of murders taking place in Black Rock, Montana. This brings me onto the location. I can only imagine a place as splendid as this but I got a real picture of it in my head. I loved the streets, the woodland and the cafe.

I really enjoyed Jenna’s character and that opening... what an explosion of action. I found myself instantly hooked especially as the dangers ramped up. I loved the use of the horses, and the bloodhound was adorable. The relationship between David and Jenna was a real treat too. I took to the crime fighting duo with ease. Gripped by the each of the main characters chapters, I found myself rooting for them throughout.

As for the investigation, the chapters with the inmate were a nail-biting treat. Such great cat and mouse interplay, and psychologically intense too.

This was my first Kane and Alton read and I felt more than happy that it could be enjoyed as a stand-alone even though there are earlier books in the series.

The ending was an absolute heart hammering cracker, and if you love detective fiction, ‘Cross My Heart’ is a must read!

If you enjoy crime thrillers with a serial killer, make sure you check this amazing book – and series – out!

In this latest story featuring Sheriff Jenna Alton and her Deputy David Kane the danger percolates through every page, keeping you on the edge of your seat ready to react to the unfolding deadly drama. An attack by a man armed with a crossbow on Jenna’s home shows someone with knowledge of her security measures and his aware that David was away – is threatening her again! When bodies start being discovered they fear a copycat killer is out for revenge as the original perpetrator is safely locked up and isolated in jail ….

This is a brilliant read, with great characters, packed with suspense and intrigue involved in an investigation where the tension continues to mount as a skilled manipulator reveals few clues and plenty of red herrings. It is a story which keeps you turning the pages, reluctant to let life make you put the book down for any reason. It is a fascinating addition to this fabulous series and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I can’t wait to read more from this superb author!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.

I was home alone when I read the first chapter, and I will never do that again when I read a D.K. Hood novel. I should know better I have read or listened to the all in this series. This certainly can be read as a stand alone, but I say invest in yourself and read the entire series. Get to know each of the characters and the little things that come out along the way. This was a fast read full of suspense, mystery, a rocking good thriller. I love the way D.K. Hood addressed the premise of this series, killers in small town of Black Rock Falls. Such a treat to come back to Black Rock Falls as I have become invested in all the characters and I know that I will be reading with my feet in my chair, no touching the floor, with the lights on and making sure my fur babies are with me. Thank you for the true entertainment you provide, and of course the heart check each book provides! Thank you for the arc, DK Hood, Bookouture and Netgalley, I freely share my thoughts an opinions, unsolicited.

Yet another fast paced, original and exciting thriller from the author. The series never disappoints and is one of my favourites. Good character development and a clever plot makes this one of the best series around at the moment from an author at the top of her game. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

A great police procedural where the duo were back along with the black hearted killers. I loved the author's writing that kept me engrossed in the story, linking the subplots seamlessly.
