I really, really WANTED to love this one. The premise was unique and there was the word, "magical" in the outline of the book. I didn't really feel the magic.

Nicole has been in trouble many times in her life. She has a rap sheet and has done jail time. She's now in the mist of a divorce and newly out of jail. She begins to work at her sister's cleaning business (cleaning houses.) Nicole's problem has always been that she "relocates objects." She seems to have a magical gift (but this is not really explored.) Sometimes she gets an energy from an object that it needs to leave its place and then she gets a feeling of where it needs to be relocated. She doesn't feel it's stealing but that is just what she always gets accused of. This time she relocates a book from a house she's been cleaning. By doing this she becomes involved in a mystery.

It took exactly 50% into this story for me to start to enjoy it. The writing is pretty easy and nice to follow but the story is a little far fetched and lacks depth. Since the story picked up some what and I was more invested I'll be rating it a 3 star. I do however feel it was more of a 2 1/2 star for my enjoyment. I was just expecting so much more from this one.

I'd like to kindly thank NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for granting me access to this Advance Reader Copy.

This is a Contemporary with a little Romance and a little magical realism/magic. I have to say I really love this book. This book's storyline is so great and it takes you on a wild ride with a ton of turns and twists. The characters in this book felt so real, and I really loved the characters. There was so much going on in this book and normally I do not like when there is a ton of side storylines going on in a book, but this book was done so well that I loved all the side stories/drama going on. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Lake Union Publishing) or author (Kerry Anne King) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

In a Nutshell: If you enjoy books with a bit of magical realism and some really memorable, albeit flawed characters, this is the book for you!

Story:
Nicole is a self-proclaimed “jailbird, nutcase, and spectacular failure.” Reason? Society considers her a kleptomaniac, constantly on the lookout for things to steal. But Nicole doesn’t “steal”. She “relocates” objects based on the energy vibes she gets from them. Needless to say, this “Object Relocation Program” of hers gets her in severe trouble with family, friends and the law. Nicole, however, has stuck to her gut feeling all these years. But with her latest relocation, something drastic seems to have altered in her life and the consequences seem to spiral out of control. Add to this the fact that her soon-to-be-ex-husband Kent has assigned a private investigator named Hawk to retrieve what she had “relocated” from him. Will Nicole be able to handle this the change in her circumstances? Will she finally be able to figure out whether her urge to move objects is a gift or a curse?
The story comes from the first person point of view of Nicole, Hawk, and a local resident Andrea, who is a recipient of Nicole’s latest relocation activity.

Where the story worked for me:
• The lead characters are AWESOME! In fact, none of the main characters are straightforward except for one somewhat-predictable fellow (charmer outside, snake inside.) Nicole is not a black or white character, but she isn’t even a typical grey. Her moral compass works on a very different level and you initially struggle to accept her justifications for stealing as “relocations”. But soon, you begin questioning your own preconceptions and wonder if there’s really some truth to her words. Andrea’s character is grey in a more typical sense. She is a pharmacist running from her past and her social anxiety is so extreme that she uses her training to mix and match medications. The way her mental health crumbles after Nicole’s latest endeavour is really well-written. That leaves us with Hawk. Sigh! Let me just say: if you are looking for a potential new literary crush (male), say a warm hello to Hawk. He’s your dream man: strong, protective, funny, caring, rushes to rescue women in trouble while still giving them their own space, and a GEEK. (Chick-lit writers take note: Wealth and looks aren’t part of my requirements.)

• The plot is based in Spokane and it uses this location so wonderfully. An apt setting for the story!

• I loved the overall story. It is so different compared to the usual magical realism plotlines. It’s more of reality with just a sprinkling of subtle fantastical parts. I especially loved these magical bits, even though they aren’t a dominant part of the narrative. The way Nicole could “feel” the energy of objects and couldn’t rest until she completed her “relocation” was quite innovative to read.

• Though the plot doesn't directly lend itself to other themes, the author still wove in marital abuse and family pressures seamlessly in the storyline. I loved how this flowed naturally through the story rather than seeming like forced add-ons.

• Extra points for being a very quick read in spite of being 350+ pages. I could not put this book down even after the story changed tracks towards the last quarter and traversed down the more clichéd route.

Where the story could have been better for me:
• The turnaround in the reactions of SOME of Nicole’s family members was too abrupt. While I did empathise with them -- (would you believe it if a family member stole things and called it “relocation”?) -- I wish the change in their opinion was also portrayed as realistically. I could also not see how so many intelligent people were being fooled by that secretive-snake character.

• The last quarter of the book goes very, very predictably. This should actually not be a major problem because this genre is meant to be predictable. But my expectations were so high because of the stupendous first half that the finale fell flat in comparison. Everything fitted in too conveniently to bring about the neatly-tied-with-big-sparkly-bows resolution.

There are many factors that make a book memorable: plot, writing and characters. In this book, the lead characters were brilliant and the writing was very good. The plot was outstanding in the first three-fourths. All this leads me to my 4.25 stars. (If the last 25% were as good as the rest of the book, I would have gone to 4.5 stars.) It is a beautiful book with mild Ruth Hogan vibes. Go for it if you want a little bit of magic within a realistic setting. I really enjoyed this book and found it as appealing as its cover.

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Kerry Anne King just gets better and better!

Meet Nicole. She steals sometimes. It’s a bit of a gift she has, if you can call it that? The law doesn’t care why she does what she does, and she may be on her way to prison now. Her marriage is in dire jeopardy, and she needs to change, quickly, or she’s going to lose it all.

Her sister gives her another chance in the form of a job with her housecleaning service. She finds herself in trouble again because there’s a paperback that moves from one house to another, and after that Nicole becomes involved in something she may not be able to get out of.

If you can leave your disbelief at the door, this is a quirky and engaging story. I’ve read nothing like it. Nicole is complex and hard to understand at times, but the author reveals just enough of her goodness that I couldn’t help but love her. This book touches across several genres, and its magical elements were part of the reason I really enjoyed this one. I was along for the journey wherever it took me.

I received a gifted copy.

On the back of “Other People’s Things” author Barbara Davis states that this book is “...woven with suspense, family drama, magic, and just the right touch of romance.” I was skeptical at first how all of this could possibly be true, but now that I’ve finished the book I realize it is all of that and so much more.

This is likely to be one of my favorite books of the year and I hope that it becomes a series or at least gets a sequel. I love the main characters so much!

“If I were to die tomorrow what would the universe do with all of its misplaced stuff?”

Nicole “Nickle” Wood has a problem, one that she has gone to all kinds of doctors to try to “fix” but the compulsion just won’t go away. It all started when she was six years old in Goodwill with her mother and a teddy bear beckoned to her. That bear needed to escape the store and be placed in someone’s arms, so she took it. But even though she swore the bear wasn’t for herself, when her family found out she stole it they forced her to return it. No one ever could have predicted what happened when the teddy bear didn’t reach its destination, her family created an imbalance of the fates and the result was a tragedy.

“I have far too many secrets that I want to hide from myself.”

Nicole gets impulses, almost a magnetic pull that something wants her to move it to a certain place. She’s come to refer to it as the “Object Relocation Program” It could be as simple as moving a sculpture to another room, or a book to another house. But, the repercussions are HUGE.

“I always tell the truth, but I pick and choose which truths I’m going to tell.”

Having this incessant need has caused her to spend many stints in jail. As well as at 30 years old she doesn’t have a home, an education and her marriage is failing. Worst of all, her family has HAD IT with her.

She has one last chance when her sister Roberta “Rob” offers to let Nicole work at her cleaning business. But how is this going to work out if something starts calling to her, which you know it does.

“What. Did. You. Do?”

Her husband is also on her heels for the $20,000 that she “stole” from him in order to give it to a unknown person she is waiting to run into.

“I am sick of my shit as they are, but I can’t see an end to it.”

“I feel like I’ve got five Jigsaw puzzles dumped out on the table and never had the boxes for any of them.”

At times heart-warming, others laugh-out-loud funny, at all times powerful—this book will have you binge-reading as if it were a thriller.

“Maybe you’re a catalyst. What you do sparks change.”

To the outside world Nicole Wood is a petty thief. Her soon-to-be ex-husband Kent and frustrated family call her a kleptomaniac. She’s been sent to jail numerous times. But while Nicole take things that don’t belong to her, she doesn’t keep them. She is compelled to take items that she senses are out of place within the universe and need relocating. Recently, Nicole has taken something valuable from her husband’s desk and he wants it back. Kent hires Hawk, a private investigator, to track Nicole’s every move. Nicole needs a job and sister Roberta gives her a chance to work in her house-cleaning business. But it doesn’t take long for Nicole to find an item in one of the houses they are cleaning that needs relocating. This one action brings a group of quirky characters into Nicole’s life while her ex-husband is desperate to get what she took back.

Other People’s Things is a lovely, oftentimes humorous, magical book. Author Kerry Anne King has created an inventive story filled with mystery, drama and a sprinkling of romance. Sometimes you need a book where you can suspend reality, sit back and simply enjoy. It captivated me.

Many thanks to Kerry Anne King and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read this wonderful book in advance of its September 21, 2021 release.

I stumbled across this while browsing the new fiction shelf of at the library, unaware of its popularity. That said, its hard not to reflect on another highly rated book, We Are the Brennans due to both of them being melodramatic and dull. During the heyday of TV, these are referred to as Soap Operas.

We first meet Nicole, a young woman recently separated from Kent, a manipulative, slime ball lawyer. "Nickle" is viewed by him and her family as a kleptomaniac due several misdemeanor thefts that sent her to jail several times. However, she's unlike typical shoplifters since she doesn't lift items for profit. Instead, her targets are the sort that need to be relocated for one purpose or another and she feels its her duty to oblige.

With a prison record, her sister Roberta hires her to help clean houses and when working at one of the clients, Nickle is called by a ragged copy of Dantes Inferno and pockets it. When they travel to a new client, she deposits the book there without her sister's knowledge. When Andrea, a high strung affluent pharmacist discovers it, things become unhinged. We then learn Nicole 'relocated' $20K in cash from Kent and it 'found its way' to a woman in need while at the Goodwill store.

Angered about the missing money, Kent hires Hawk, a private investigator to keep tabs on Nicole. And that's when the story gets soapy. As the plot drags along, soap bubbles rise and soon the melodrama becomes overwhelming.

Put simply, this is about as predictable as they come with the minor exception of the relocation element. Characters are flat, plot tries to be unique, but fails due to predictable romance, drug overdoses and a ridiculous court scene I saw coming half way through.

I realize I may be in the minority since sappy romance stories fail to engage my tastes. But for those that enjoy them, this could be right up your alley! As with all art, we're each drawn to something different, and the Rolling Stones would call this 'brown shoes'.

Ever since discovering Kerry Anne King with Whisper Me This, I have enjoyed all of her books. This one started slowly, but by the end I could hardly put it down.

Nicole (Nickle) moves things. Most people call this stealing, but she never keeps anything for herself, just relocates whatever she feels needs moving, whether a teddy bear, mobile phone, $20,000 or an old tattered paperback. Because of her compulsion, things happen, but mostly to her, like spending time in the lock up.

There are many colourful characters involved in this well paced romp, just when things look really bad for Nickle, she discovers there are people who care. I did and was enthralled on this journey. Great stuff.

I have read a lot of books this year but so far this one tops the list of my best reads for 2021! I don't know if I can pinpoint exactly why I enjoyed the book so much, in fact so much that I stayed up until nearly 2 AM finishing the book. I had to know what happened next and how the story might end.

The book alternates POV between Nicole, Hawk, and Andrea. Nicole is called a thief and a kleptomaniac, but that really doesn't define what she does with the objects she takes. She actually relocates the items. It is sort of magical for Nicole because items "speak" to her to let her know they aren't happy where they are but she doesn't always know where they want to be right away. Take some money she took from her husband, $10k to be exact. All she knew is that the money needed to be somewhere else and she needed to safeguard it until such time that the true owner would be revealed to her. I like the fact that she never lies as long as you ask her the right question. You don't ask her if she stole anything, you ask if she took anything for relocation.

Hawk is a PI that is hired to follow Nicole to find out where that money is and how her husband could get it back. Needless to say, Hawk isn't wild about the husband and is suspicious of his intentions. It doesn't hurt that he is intrigued by Nicole and perhaps a bit enamored with her.

Andrea is running from her past and is afraid of what she might find should the truth come out. She lives in fear of those around her and being discovered for who she really is. As the story unfolds, Andrea learns a lot from Nicole and that perhaps trusting people is not a bad thing.

I really enjoyed following the story and seeing different angles of what each character was going through and how it was perceived by others. Nicole's husband is a jerk and it is a shame that her past leads her family to trust him more than her. The story is also about family, forgiveness, and truth, and that without these things, there is no relationship that will ever work out the way it should.

This book dives into the lives of the three main characters in a way you might never imagine. I highly recommend picking this book up and escaping for a while.

We give this book 5 paws up.

I devoured this book! It was such an interesting read and I couldn't put it down. There were times when I wanted to scream at some of the characters for how they treated the main character, Nicole.

I loved how the author linked all the characters. I believe this is what had me hooked to the book. The little twists here and there were perfectly placed in the storyline.

If this book hasn't been on your radar or TBR list, make it a point to read it!

This is not my first book by King. And I hope its not my last she is a clever author. Who would have ever thought to write a book about a kleptomaniac and make it fantastic. This book is on the top of my lost to share with all my reader friends. I was so engrossed with it I never put it down.
5 stars and I highly recommend it. I hope you get to read it.

“What. Did. You. Do?”
This had such a cute, engaging and unique premise. Nicole likes to ‘relocate’ objects - to others she is simply a kleptomaniac. This is not my usual genre, but I loved the main character and her ‘gift’, it was surprisingly heart-warming and enjoyable. A story full of family drama, suspense, flawed characters and a touch of magical realism.

Thank you so much to Lake Union Publishing for providing me with a copy of this book, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review!

Nicole, ‘Nickle’, has a problem. Well, it’s a problem with the law, because she feels compelled to relocate certain objects. She can feel when they are not meant to be where they are, and where they should be moved to instead. She can’t help it, but unfortunately, to the rest of the world, it looks a lot like stealing. Like the battered paperback book that needed to be taken from one client’s house to another, when she was working as a cleaner with her sister. It seems harmless enough – it’s just a book. But Nickle’s ‘relocations’ start to have more of an effect than she ever imagined. While her family desperately tries to intervene, to stop her from stealing anything else, her ex-husband will do anything to get back something she stole from him. PI, Hawk, has been hired by her ex to track Nickle and the stolen goods down, but even he starts to let his curiosity about her ‘gift’, and Nickle herself, get the best of him.

This was such an interesting premise for a book! I absolutely loved watching the multiple mysteries unravel and discovering the significance of the relocated items. Both Nickle and Hawk were fascinating characters and the ex-husband, Kent, was infuriating. Nickle’s family’s insistence on believing Kent over her at every turn made me want to slap them all 😅. This one had my blood boiling and my heart melting all in one.

If you love quirky and unique books, with a touch of magic, that are difficult to put down, I’d highly recommend picking this one up!

I have to admit that this book had some good twists in it. I was going into it thinking one way and then it flips and I am like "what just happened". From that point I was really hooked.

The way that Nicole dealt with her kleptomania was interesting. She did not steal items for the sake of keeping them but she took the items and "relocated" them. The reason Nicole relocated the items is because they do not belong in the original destination. So when Nicole relocates her latest item at a client's house, it sets off a chain of events that Nicole can not stop.

This was a very fast read for me. I read it in two days. The first half of the story was good but the second half was a bit better. This is where the twist happened at the half way point and the intensity went up as well. I will be checking out more books by this author. Other People's Things by Kerry Anne King is not to be missed.

📚 Hello Book Friends! Some books end in a way that you wish it would go on; OTHER PEOPLE’S THINGS by Kerry Anne King is one of those books. The writing is beautiful, the plot is awesome, and the ending is perfect. Ms. King weaved a story that is full of emotions and magical moments. The characters are extraordinary, and I will miss getting to know them better. I wish there was a second book to see their life is taking them all and have in reserve for them. Although, I am sad that I finished this beautiful book, I am happy that I discovered a new author (to me) and I am looking forward to reading more books by her in the future. I recommend that you pick up a copy of OTHER PEOPLE’S THINGS soon and enjoy an awesome read!

This was another delight to read. It has a little bit of everything. There’s family drama, quirky characters, mystery and suspense , romance, unlikeable characters, strategically placed twists and very well done magical realism.

I loved the interaction with all the characters, everything falls into place. There’s always something happening. I’d advise you to read the synopsis below it won’t spoil your reading experience.

Kind of a laid back and cute story about a young woman who has “object relocation” tendencies. What, you may ask, is that?

She is not a criminal. She does not steal things. She just finds the right place for items. She Adamantly Re-homes them to where they are supposed to be in this universe.
It Is funny how these things “speak” to her on where they truly belong. There are assorted wayward items she gets exposed to and she picks up a sense of where they need to actually, finally be.

A good story to pass the time and make the reader smile.

4.5 stars rounded up!!!

Wow, what a unique, creative, special book! This was the kind of book that felt like a big, warm, cozy, embracing hug! I loved this!! (Not biased because the main character has my name, ha)

Was this a romance? women's fiction? light mystery? I am not sure, because it had a little bit of everything. Mostly, it was a feel-good book! It was one of those books that just makes you happy and warm inside as you read it. I loved the concept ("moving things"), and loved how the author executed everything, including the ending.

If you are looking for a feel-good book - pick this up!

Other People’s Things is an intricately woven story that is an amalgamation of intense family drama, some mystery, a bit of romance, and a wonderful dose of magic. There are so many layers to this book—the more I read, the more I uncovered, with revelations that were startling, surprising, and often took my breath away. Each of the characters—Nickle, Hawk, Andrea, and all of the rest, were complex and genuine—real people with real problems, with physical and emotional scars, people who have built walls to protect their hearts while also preventing them from truly living their best lives. My heart was engaged from the very beginning, through all the ups and downs, twists and turns, an emotional journey that I felt deep down. This captivating book was constantly surprising me, with its original and unexpected plot that was as entertaining as it was heartfelt. I was so thoroughly involved in the lives of the characters, that it is hard to say goodbye to them—they are going to take up space in my heart for a long time!

Woven with suspense, family drama, magic, and just the right touch of romance, OTHER PEOPLE’S THINGS is an utterly compulsive read. With a compelling cast of characters and a delightfully imaginative plot, readers are taken on a journey of self-discovery as a young woman struggles to embrace her unique gifts and find her place in a world that has already made up its mind about her. King’s emotionally honest storytelling and wonderfully flawed protagonist remind us that people aren’t always who we think they are—and that some curses might actually be blessings in disguise

This isn't my usual genre; I tend to stick with thrillers and fantasy. When I do order a different choice on the menu (due to rave reviews or recommendations), I am often reminded why I stick to my favorites.

This book must be pretty special. Though not my typical read, it grabbed my attention from the very beginning and held on tight until the end.

The MC has a compulsion to move certain objects which other people consider stealing. It's not though. Those objects need to be moved and she literally cannot help herself without negative consequences. Needless to say, it puts a strain on her relationships and the bonus of a criminal record.

When she moves something that belongs to a bad man, things get complicated. And we get a story containing some action, romance, mystery, redemption, a tiny bit of supernatural abilities, and family drama. The pacing was PERFECT with events, character development and plot points unfolding throughout the book.

I am so happy I had the opportunity to read this book and would be even happier if the author would consider a sequel!

I switched back and forth between reading and listening. The audio was fabulous as well!

I really really really liked this book. Superb, unique idea for a plot. I absolutely loved the first half of the book. I found the idea of moving items with a possible psychic/6th sense-ness about it completely fascinating, truly a unique 5-Star plot. King’s writing was so effortless, fluent and easy that I got lost in the book right away. She had me laughing out loud when Nicole reveals the title of her own moving things’ problem. Terrific character development, pace and execution.

Something in my opinion of the book changed with the development of the Hawk character midway. The feminist in me really did not like the “man rescues woman” point of this character or the fact that Hawk himself nearly states these exact words. I also did not like most of the dialog with Nicole, finding it quite a bit cheesy and laced with cliches. The passion and development of the Nicole character really seemed to fizzle when Hawk was introduced.

Also, I found some of Nicole’s family dynamic to be unbelievable, in particular towards the end.

King hooked me with again with the last chapter. The internal monologues and subtle interactions of the main characters of that chapter were so well written. It was a pleasure to read.

This was my first book by King. Will be looking into others!

A loveably flawed heroine who destroys relationships and her own life with the best of intentions. A decades long family mystery. A nuanced cast of characters, and King's ability to have you laughing and crying within the span of a few pages. You're going to love this one!

This novel has heart, love, suspense, drama and magic all woven together into an amazing, really cool"story!

"Welcome to the world of Nicole, where nothing--- and I mean nothing---is ever normal."
I love Nicole! She has guts, determination and only tells the truth. She cannot lie.
She has a mystical gift that has always created a ruckus in her life and for those she cares about.
She relocates objects that need to find their rightful owner. Is this considered stealing?
However, this has often given Nicole jail time, and has traumatized others at times.
When she relocates something that her estranged husband has hidden, the world truly begins to unfold for Nicole and for anyone that she has come to know!
He will stop at nothing to get this back!

This is a great book that had me hooked from the very first page!
Excellent!

This fascinating novel had everything I love in a story that keeps me turning the pages: A deeply flawed character that I feel connected with and I am rooting for from the very beginning, a unique premise, I love story in the background, and interesting characters who leave a complicated story together easily and effortlessly.

One note for the author: in chapter 30 when Andrea comes home from the hospital, there is no mention of Sylvester the cat. As a cat lover myself, I felt like Sylvester should’ve been there at the door, meowing, to greet her! Or at least he would have jumped up on her lap the first time she sat down or laid down.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Nicole is a woman who feels the urge to "relocate" things -- not steal them, but move them -- and it's gotten her in trouble. Her family is at the end of their rope with her, her husband is divorcing her, and she's even been arrested. She tries to resist the urge, but without success. Is there any way she can halt the downward course that her compulsions have set her on? I found this book so original and so intriguing. The author's description of what Nicole feels when an urge hits was palpable -- I was right there inside her skin! And the way the story unfolds, the way the compulsions orchestrate the trajectory of her life -- it's so unexpected and interesting. This was a wonderful read -- so compelling, fresh and unusual. I really enjoyed it and was sorry to see it end!
