If you are like most solopreneurs or small business owners, the desire to make your dreams come true at a bigger level requires a team that can understand your vision and get stuff done. Unfortunately, it can seem impossible, especially with the cultural differences between Gen Xers and Millennials, to ever get people to effectively do what you want.
This book reveals the reasons why it’s so hard to build a team and a work culture that get results. In it you will learn: Exactly where you can find great employees who know how to take action and get it done The magical formula to writing job descriptions that generate just a few high-quality applications from only the best candidates How to conduct an interview process to make sure you don’t ever make an expensive hiring mistake The key to saving staff members who aren’t working out and for navigating the right timing to let go of an employee who isn’t a fit The biggest mistake most employers make with compensation plans which leads to high turn over and low happiness (hint: it isn’t about paying more) An eye-opening revelation about how long-established systems are falling apart at work, this book picks up where classics like Rocket Fuel and Good to Great no longer connect with the realities on the ground of building a team largely of millennials.
While I found a few helpful nuggets in this book that guided my hiring process, there were numerous spelling and grammar errors, including some that actually conveyed the opposite of what the author meant (i.e. “The candidate should say “yes” to these things” when she actually meant they should say “no”). This made it hard to follow at times.
The middle chapters would be valuable to a business owner when hiring a quality employee but overall the book was not my style and lost some credibility with the errors.
If you judge a book by how hard a pill it is to swallow, then I'm Alice in Wonderland & Angela just gave me a whole bottle that says Eat Me! This book confronted every fiber of my soul. It challenged me at every turn. And that makes it the winner.
Great stories. Great lessons. And great material. I'll be digesting this material for a long, long time. There's a million good lessons & a beacon of hope that hiring & firing can finally be a force of good on this Earth. Thanks for the wonderful story of hope. I learned a lot.
A friend of mine recommended this book when it was a Kindle freebie, and I jumped on it. I do love that this book is very much of the modern age and speaks of hiring issues people today, not twenty years ago face when hiring. The advice was interesting, easy to take onboard and broken down into easy to digest chunks. The principles are very much in alignment with how I like to hire and it was wonderful to find extra tips, and guidelines around the process to help clarify the steps.
My only flaws were the editing, one section was duplicated in my copy, and I wasn't a big fan of some of the slang which made me a double take to check I was not indeed just old.
