USA Today bestseller Caitlin Crews returns with Summer Nights with a Cowboy, another emotional romance in her stunning cowboy series Kittredge Ranch…. He doesn’t believe in love…
Traveling nurse Janie Atwood has come to Cold River to uncover old family secrets and maybe, if she’s lucky, find a new home. That the gorgeous, glowering sheriff next door thinks her caring for his elderly neighbor is a nefarious scheme is a bonus. Having never been anything but a good girl, Janie finds Zack Kittredge’s simmering suspicion an excellent reason to try being a little dangerous instead…
She doesn’t believe in squandering it…
Sheriff Zack Kittredge is okay with being… intense. He takes his loner status as seriously as he takes his responsibilities to protect Cold River. And he thinks cheerful Janie might be a threat to the town. But the more he gets to know her, the more he faces the truth―she’s brighter than sunshine and he’s like a moth to her flame. When Janie suggests he could use a few charm school lessons, he surprises them both by accepting. He doesn’t need help. But it’s clear he might need her…
Because the only thing hotter than the summer sun in the Rockies is the forbidden passion that burns between them…
Caitlin Crews discovered her first romance novel at the age of twelve, in a bargain bin at the local five and dime. It involved swashbuckling pirates, grand adventures, a heroine with rustling skirts and a mind of her own, and a seriously mouthwatering and masterful hero. The book (the title of which remains lost in the mists of time) made a serious impression. Caitlin was immediately smitten with romances and romance heroes, to the detriment of her middle school social life. And so began her life-long love affair with romance novels, many of which she insists on keeping near her at all times, thus creating a fire hazard of love wherever she lives.
Caitlin has made her home in places as far-flung as York, England and Atlanta, Georgia. She was raised near New York City, and fell in love with London on her first visit when she was a teenager. She has backpacked in Zimbabwe, been on safari in Botswana, and visited tiny villages in Namibia. She has, while visiting the place in question, declared her intention to live in Prague, Dublin, Paris, Athens, Nice, the Greek Islands, Rome, Venice, and/or any of the Hawaiian islands. Writing about exotic places seems like the next best thing to actually moving there.
She currently lives in Oregon with her animator/comic book artist husband and their menagerie of ridiculous animals.
This is my favourite cowboy series and I was so looking forward to this third instalment in the Kittredge Ranch series by Caitlin Crews and it was every bit as enjoyable as I expected it to be.
This time we finally get to know what made the eldest Kittredge brother, Zack, leave the ranch, which he as the first-born son was supposed to inherit and pour all his soul and hard, sweaty, backbreaking work in. There's no doubt that reserved, broody Zack loves this land and people living on it and he actually loves taking care of horses and the ranch, so why did he decide to become a law enforcement officer and a sheriff? Rest assured, all the secrets will be revealed with the help of a certain red-haired nurse, Janie Atwood, a newcomer to Cold River, Colorado. Ever since she tripped and spilled her snow mocha all over Zack's shirt, he knows she is trouble with a capital T and to his trained lie-detecting eyes she is hiding something and can't be trusted.
Janie has been friend-zoned and relegated to an honourable kid sister status numerous times, so when she comes on the gorgeous sheriff's troublemaker radar, she is so nervous she can't stop talking total nonsense in his presence. The easiest thing would be to tell him the truth- she took up a position in Cold River because this is the best place to she is look for her family roots, but this is the first time anyone actually thought she was a dangerous, sensual woman, so why not go on with it for a bit?
There's so much lovely tension, good, old-fashioned flirting and banter when Janie announces Zack needs a school of Charm. Fair enough, even his loud and interfering siblings think he is gloomy, intense, and is suffering from a Saint Zack/ hero complex. Nobody has ever seen him date anyone in the county and it's true, he hasn't...by choice. Janie, on the other hand, despite all her blend-into-walls, sensible clothes and practical shoes, is considerate and easy-going. As a travelling nurse, specialising in geriatrics, she has had to fit in in all sorts of families and deal with various conflicts. Janie is excellent at what she is doing and not only because of her medical qualifications and her experience- her heart is in the right place and she really cares for her patients. Janie is a curious mixture of sanguine and emotional, experienced and innocent. Needless to say, when she falls for Zack, she falls hard...And then she also finds out about her notorious ancestor and this adds a new layer to her relationship with our gorgeous sheriff. What I loved about this book the most is first and foremost that everyone is kind and decent. There's no cheating or malicious gossip. At the heart of the book is the eternal question of parent-children relations, changing expectations, communication and miscommunication- something we can all relate to. Fans of the series are going to be delighted with the story and the ending that does tie all the loose ends. This is my sixth book set in Cold River and of course I was delighted to see all the familiar faces, but Caitlin Crews doesn't overload the book with cameo appearances, it can be read as a standalone. You might be surprised at an unusually high number of happy couples (and pregnant women), but it is first and foremost Zack and Janie's story, and a very enjoyable one. I know I'm not ready to say goodbye to Cold River...Hope Caitlin continues the series - there are so many characters that Caitlin's fans can't wait to read more about! Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin’s Press for the review copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Summer Nights with a Cowboy by Caitlin Crews 3rd and final book in the Kittredge Ranch series. Contemporary romance. Can be read as a stand-alone. Nurse Janie is in Cold River to take care of a patient that wants live in companionship. Sheriff Zack Kittredge is sure she has ulterior motives and he’s watching her closely. She bothers him.
Tender and sweet. Poetic writing in the sex scenes and beyond. Enchanting turn of a phrase. A story full of warmth, family and facing the emotional hurdles.
“You do what you have to for the woman you love, came that voice within him. Even if it’s charm school.”
This is a Cowboy Romance, and this is the third book in the Kittredge Ranch series. I have read and reviewed the other books in this series before picking up this book, but I do think this book can be read as a standalone. If you do read this book as a standalone you will just miss some of the backstory on some of the secondary characters. I enjoyed this book a lot, but there was a handful of parts in this book that I felt was a little bit to much. I did love the characters in this book. Janie's character was so great, and her character made this book everything. Zack needed someone like Janie because his character was so uptight. This book had a lot going on, but it was written so well that it was easy to keep up with the different story lines that was going on. The romance in this book moved really fast, but it was still super cute and fun. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's) or author (Caitlin Crews) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
ARC provided by NetGalley and St Martin's publisher for an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review.
Rating 3.75
Love Caitlin Crews books and this one was enjoyable and fun.
Zack is the towns Sherif. He comes from a ranching family and has decided to step back from helping running the ranch because of conflict with his father. The Kittredge family have a lot of baggage to rutter through. Zack in known as a more "serious" and stoic individual by friends and family. But really it would take a special lady to get past that wall to the heart of the man and Janie was it.
Janie is a nurse and came to town to live with and care for a Damaris, an elderly, sweet lady that needed assistance. Oh and she was also Zack's neighbor. Janie made the move to the small town after her grandparent died. Before they had died they imparted some critical information about her ancestry who were located in that particular town. Janie wanted some answers about her mother and her father who she never knew or met.
Zack is spacious of Janie and knows that she's here not just to nurse Damaris (Janie hasn't told anyone that she might have relatives in that town). There first meeting was a hoot, just makes you love Janie.
Janie is a sweet and strong woman wanting answers about her Mom and possible relatives. She just needs some closer. She is quirky, funny and has a heart of gold. I absolutely loved how she melted Zack's heart. He just couldn't resist.
The story entails the journey of Janie's family and finding her roots. Zack's relationship with his father and mother and some preconceived ideas he has of something he witnessed when he was younger. The relationship they build as they open up and share who they are and what each is fearful of and dealing with. They become friends and then it evolves into so much more. As they find answers and true love.
This is a more sweet and funny romance, less angst than normal for this author. I enjoyed the change and really found a lot of heart and emotion in this love story. The secondary characters are just a likable as the main ones too.
My main issue is I struggled in the beginning of the story. It was slow and found it hard to keep track of where the story or plot was going. But about quarter of the way through the story it picked up and became more enjoyable.
I love the small town "world" that Caitlin Crews creates. Her descriptions of the town life and characters truly are a joy to read.
Wow Zack… intense stuff and a lot of personal cleaning in this one. Missed the heat. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have been waiting for Zack's story all this time and it is finally here! With a character as tough and hard as he comes across, I was anxious to see how the author would balance him with the female character.
Janie is, in all accounts, a klutz that is totally out of her element around men and it shows. I had a bit of a like/dislike thing going on with her. I just wasn't sure she was strong enough for him.
But the author won this round as it wasn't so much the toughness of Zack and the balanced needed, it was more of the breaking through to his iced-over heart and allowing him to feel love and acceptance. Plus he finally put to bed the issues with his parents. That was a trip...
One thing that this story lacked for me was passion - passion and burning heat for each other. The words were there. The actions and feelings were there, but something was missing. The intensity that we usually have gotten with the other brothers and their loves was a bit low-key.
However, the love of the cowboy ways, small towns, family, and sweet love pave the way for a fabulous story that leaves your heart just a bit more tender and your eyes a bit misty.
Crews is a fabulous author and a true artiste in cowboy romance. With intense stories and characters alike, she brings emotion and a unique flavor to cowboy romance every time. Love her!
SUMMER NIGHTS WITH A COWBOY was a great ending to the Kittredge Ranch Series. I really loved Janie Atwood's character and she was the perfect person to break through to Sheriff Zack Kittredge who was always so ummm how shall I say this...uptight, yeah that's it...LOL.
Believe it or not I actually liked Zack and all of his rough edges in his siblings books so I was looking forward to getting his story and seeing what type of woman he'd fall for. Janie was great, a complete and total klutz with the biggest of hearts, she's someone I could definitely see myself being friends with.
The Sheriff in Zack was on full alert whenever Janie was around but the man in him couldn't get enough of her, even if he thought she was hiding something...which she was.
This story had a lot of personal growth for Zack and it was a time of new beginnings for Janie, together they had great chemistry and we were gifted with everyone's happy ever afters...weddings, children, etc.
I would recommend reading this series in order to get the full effect of the series wrap-up but this can be read as a standalone if that is how you choose to read it. This book is perfect for those that enjoy Western Romances, Small Town Romances, or Girl Next Door Romances.
Summer Nights with a Cowboy caps off the Kittredge Ranch series with a bang and one of my favorite reads of the year. The highly anticipated story of the last single Kittredge sibling, Zack, is just one swoon-worthy dose of charm and sexiness all wrapped up in one good-looking sheriff. Zack is highly suspicious of the new day nurse Janie Atwood, taking care of his elderly neighbor Damaris, and has her in his crosshairs. Janie arrived in Cold River to take care of her elderly charge but has ulterior motives of finding her kin here in this small Colorado town. Zack’s attention makes Janie nervous and clumsy but they eventually find themselves attractive to one another and things really steam up between them.
This story may have been a romance between two night and day characters, but also has secondary storylines about family and old secrets that finally come to light. Damaris and her son have issues and how does one deal with an elderly parent. Zack’s relationship with his family is tense, but with Janie’s aid, he finds out what happened all those years ago between his parents. Smartly written with all three plots weaving in and out of one another, really brought this story to a wonderful conclusion. A delightful read of family, secrets and happy endings for the Kittredges of Cold River.

What a fantastic end to the Kittredge Ranch series. I loved each of these books and am so sad to see the series end. I absolutely inhaled this one. I mean who doesn't love a grumpy sheriff? I couldn't wait to get Zack's full story. As a reader, I always felt that something was missing to keep him so distant. This book helps to explain it all as well as helping him to muddle his way through a lot of heartache and come out shining as the true here he really is.
Then there is Janie. She's such a lovable character. She's insecure about everything and understandably so. There is so much about her own life that she doesn't understand fully. To complicate things, the sheriff of Cold River has done nothing but stalk her with his many suspicions from the minute she arrived in town.
Watching their romance gradually develop was actually sweet....as well as a little steamy at times. Zack is in denial that he can be attracted to Janie because he thinks there has to be something wrong with her. Janie is too insecure to believe someone like Zack is interested in her. Eventually they stumble into it and it was simply fantastic when they did. Their chemistry was spot on and their characters were the perfect compliment for one another.
These brothers and the women they love were wonderful to read about. It was easy to become invested in each and every one of their stories. I look forward to seeing what Ms. Crews gives us next. I'm hopeful that there is more to come from Cold River.
Thank you for NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
I had read the previous book in this series and enjoyed it, so I was absolutely here for another one.
I liked Janie and Zack. She's cheerful, loyal, and looking for family. He's stern, closed off, and wants to avoid his family. Together they have instant intrigue, a decent amount of chemistry, and some very fun button pushing. Of course, I loved Damaris, Janie's charge, who was feisty and so much fun.
Plot wise, it was okay. There's loads of inner monologue, yet it worked (sometimes) as it was how the MCs showed their growth. I did love the Janie wasn't afraid to stand up for what she wanted, regardless of how it was going to hurt. The actual angsty times weren't too bad, but it is basically hanging over the couple the entire story.
Overall, it was a mostly fun read because this family is fun. And while I did enjoy the epilogue, I could have easily set this down unfinished and been fine.
**Huge thanks to the publisher for providing this arc free of charge**
Zack and Janie are complicated, interesting characters, and they challenged each other to see themselves in a different light.
Sheriff Zack Kittredge takes himself and his job very seriously. When a young nurse named Janie moves in next door with his elderly neighbour, he is instantly suspicious of her. Janie is finding some freedom in Zack's low opinion of her to be a bit more adventurous than usual. Normally she is seen as the cute, well-behaved younger sister, and she revels in the fact that Zack doesn’t see her that way. Sparks start to fly when Janie offers Zack charm school lessons.
Janie’s memories of her grandmother and the non-relationship with her grandfather after her grandmother’s death are all intertwined and complicated. Intermingled is the mystery of who her father is. She is hoping to find the answers in Cold River. And Zack’s entire personality was firmly cemented by events that happened when he was 18.
Right from the start this story was all emotion. Attraction, yes, but also all the big feelings that Zack and Janie had about themselves. They brought out the best in each other. Janie made Zack re-examine the reasons behind the animosity he has for this father. And Zack was the one man who saw beyond Janie’s adorable freckles to the amazing woman underneath.
I really enjoyed this book and I can recommend it to any romance reader. This is the third book in the Kittredge Ranch series. It’s not necessary to read them in order, each stand well on its own.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Summer Nights with a Cowboy is a fun, entertaining read about a traveling nurse, Janie, and a by-the-book sheriff. Getting to know the characters and setting made for a story that was hard to put down. I loved when Janie gave Zack charm lessons - had me laughing out loud. Great read. I highly recommend it.
Summer Nights with a Cowboy is an engaging, heartwarming tale that takes you into the life of the tough and broody Sheriff Zack Kittredge as he struggles with the demands of protecting the town, handling his familial responsibilities, pressures, and troubles from the past, and an unfortunate attraction to his neighbour’s new live-in nurse, the clumsy yet exceptionally pretty Jane Atwood who seems to be harbouring a few secrets of her own.
The writing is sweet and light. The characters are wary, kind, and endearing. And the plot is a charming, feel-good tale full of friendship, community, drama, family, chemistry, secrets, acceptance, intrigue, introspection, romance, and love.
Overall, Summer Nights with a Cowboy is another fabulous addition to the Kittredge Ranch series by Crews, complete with intriguing characters, an entertaining storyline, and a dreamy, happy-ever-after ending.
Thank you to SMP Romance – St. Martin’s Press for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
It was great to get back to the Kittredge Ranch, and it was nice to see a career for our leading lady that I haven't seen before - a travel nurse.
I really liked Janie and the mission she was on for herself. And then there is Zack. I wanted to hug him as much as I wanted to slap the back of his head Gibbs/Dinozzo style. I liked him for Janie, as much as I hated the way he was with Janie if that makes sense.
She is good for him though, and I liked the way she thawed his hardened heart.
I had forgotten a lot of what happened in the other books, but there was enough to jog my memory, and though book 3 in the series, it could be read as a stand alone.
I look forward to reading more of Caitlin Crews stories in the future.
What a fun read this proved to be A contemporary romance with a secret mystery And a family drama or two to add to the mix Along with cowboys - it could be just your fix!
Janie Atwood has come to Cold River to discover Family secrets and connections she hopes to uncover. She's working as a nurse carer and companion meanwhile And the suspicions of the Sheriff just make her smile!
Zack Kittredge just doesn't trust this new nurse in town He doesn't know why, but she makes him glower and frown. She's more used to being ignored but finds instead His attentions put thoughts of living dangerously into her head.
As Janie settles into town, making friends galore Zack finds his attraction to her he wants to explore. But Zack has a reputation of being somewhat dour Can her offered charm school lesson help stop him feeling sour?
This story had me giggling as everything starts to be told With her parents' past to discover and the drama unfold. Along with other family dramas and secrets to discover As Zack and Janie get to know each other.
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you, An engaging, fun read and this is my honest review.
I loved everything about this story! It had me laughing from the beginning and also rooting for Zack and Janie.
What is not to love about a scowly sheriff, who left his family ranch to go into law enforcement and takes his job of protecting the people of Cold River very seriously? He literally runs into the new resident, who is a traveling nurse taking care of his neighbor, and ends up wearing her coffee all down his shirt.
Zack Kittredge is the oldest and while he is happy to see his siblings paired off, he like his solitary life in town up on the hill of a dead end street. Then, Janie had to go and trip on her own two feet where he now has his sights set on her and finding out just what she is doing in his town, because he can spot a liar when he sees one.
Janie develops two left feet every time she's near Zack, she knows he doesn't like her, but it's a puzzle because she's used to everyone treating her like their kid sister. This is a new development.
It takes Zack's friend to point out to him that maybe his rude behavior is due to his liking Janie.
One encounter, Janie spouts off on him that he needed some help and she's just the one to teach him because she's opening her very own Cold River charm school. Zack takes her up on it.
Over time, Zack starts to behave differently, which has his siblings' tongues wagging at a Fourth of July event. Zack and Janie get closer, although both still have guarded secrets.
This is the third book in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone. I love Zack and Janie's story and how they brought out the best in one another.
I received an ARC from NetGalley via St. Martin's Press and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.
I think this might be my favorite Kittredge Ranch book! We’ve seen sheriff Zach as a secondary character in previous books, but here we get to know him better and understand more about his backstory. He is paired with traveling nurse, Janie, who is in Cold River for more than work.
I enjoyed the slow burn of watching these two get to know each other. The push/pull was entertaining and the fun really started when the pot of tension finally boiled over. The best part of this couple was not only did they have chemistry, they also challenged each other’s preconceived notions. Zach and Janie both had pretty significant character evolutions, but they felt organic and natural to who they are.
As with all books in the series, there is a significant secondary cast. Having read other books set in Cold River (and not just this series) would be helpful, but not necessary. Ms Crews does a good job of sharing enough information to feel like you know the players involved. Loyal readers will appreciate getting to see previous main characters pop in for updates and a long running mystery *may* be solved….. i am hopeful that this is not our last visit to Cold River!
The mysterious Zack's story is finally told! We get to see what makes this uptight, workaholic, rancher-cum-sheriff tick
Janie may be new to Cold River but she soon fits in. But she has some secrets too - ones that she's not keen on the Sheriff getting hold of. But with that red hair she's not exactly Ms Invisible!
Poor Janie, she is so used to being relegated to younger sister/best friend status that she can't help having a case of motormouthitis whenever she is around Zack - he just gets her all worked up. She has a few calamities around him - again not helping with flying under the radar.
Smexy tension, flirty repartee, and chemistry that is off the charts - Zack and Janie will capture your heart and imagination. I loved learning more about Janie's ancestors and you can't help ut love her and her huge heart.
I always enjoy my visits to Cold River, and Summer Nights with a Cowboy is no exception. As its a wonderful addition to the series that sees newcomer Janie fall for eldest Kittredge and local Sheriff Zach and whilst this story can be read as a standalone I do think there is something comforting about reading the whole series especially as the characters are so likable.
And the story is certainly an engaging one; with less angst than you'd normally find and plenty of sweetness it was easy and fun to read, and I genuinely liked the two main characters and the romance. Which is why I would happily recommend it to others.
**I was kindly provided with an ARC via St Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review**
Janie is a live-in geriatric nurse, looking after a sprightly eighty-something-year old widow called Damaris Gardiner in her big old house in Cold River. Janie has been resolutely friend-zoned by almost every man she's ever met and thinks of herself as an adult Pippi Longstocking, so it's a bit of a shock that the local sheriff Zack Kittredge thinks she's a femme fatale up to no good. Janie thinks she should be outraged at being judged so harshly, but actually she's thrilled that a woman wearing no make-up and sensible slacks with flat shoes could even be considered one iota dangerous.
Zack has always held himself and others to a high standard, when he was eighteen years old he left the family ranch and moved into his own home, leaving his inheritance for a job in law-enforcement. Ever since then there has been a coldness between Zack and his father Donovan, but that doesn't stop Zack from regularly going out to the ranch for Sunday lunch with his family, because that's what an honourable man does. When this flame-haired temptress with the bewitching freckles moves in with his elderly neighbour he's highly suspicious, especially since he can tell she's lying about something. Zack doesn't do relationships, even his flings are far away from Cold River and they are more like business arrangements with women who know the score. Yet every time he tries to shut down his feelings about Janie they just get bigger and messier.
This feels like the end of the Kittredge family saga. We finally discover what has kept Donovan and Zack at loggerheads for so many years, and Zack finally takes that stick out of his butt. TBH I don't think anyone comes out of this well, but that's just my opinion.
I had been waiting impatiently for Zack's book, but as is often the way the great unveiling of the secret was a bit of a damp squib. Also, I've come to the conclusion that writing a series of books about brooding cowboys from the same family just means the family seems highly dysfunctional and in need of family therapy. Even the reasons behind Zack's mother's behaviour sound frankly like some kind of psychological warfare rather than the actions of a rational mature adult.
An enjoyable end (I think) to the series, perhaps those no-good Hills will be the focus of the next series? But didn't quite hit the highs I was hoping for. Closer to my feelings for the second book rather than the emotion-fest of the first book.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
What a wonderful, glorious, and super swoony end to Kittredge Ranch. The author managed to deliver a knockout in each of the three books. I absolutely loved this whole series, this family, these siblings, and the women they welcome into their lives.
It's no secret I love a brooding, grumpy hero, especially when my favorite cowboys in Cold River are Gray (Cold River Ranch-book one,) Riley, and now Zack. Zack was suspicious, overbearing, and too serious in the first two books, but he becomes a fully redeemed romantic hero in this one. Janie manages to pique his suspiciousness enough to catch his attention, but then it becomes something else. I was gripped from the first chapter and enjoyed the instant tension between Zack and Janie while it all built up to their first kiss and so on. The unfolding of their relationship was rather dreamy and I was right there feeling all of it.
As for Janie herself, it took me until nearly the end of the book to realize why I connected so well with her. I am Janie. Older orphan, finding her paternal family as an adult, and her clumsiness. Even when tripping over her own feet, nearly face-planting while missile-launching a coffee drink in front of a crowded room. I've done that!! And my son has never let me forget it. I also do the incessant talking thing when nervous. Janie has her cooler moments, though, and she is wonderful with Zack. I liked her calm characterization under pressure and the handling of her patients and family. She helps Zack see his world a little differently.
Summer Nights also had another fabulous epilogue, executed similar to Jensen's in the previous book. I loved reading the quick and sweet synopsis of Zack and Janie's future. While I'm heartbroken this series is over, I have a feeling we're still not done with Cold River. The Mortimer Sisters, anyone?
--- I was invited to view this ARC through NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it --- An entertaining read featuring two interesting, intriguing characters, “Summer Nights with a Cowboy”, by Caitlin Crews (St. Martin’s Paperbacks), is a story full of passion, sexual tension, secrets and even suspense, surrounding the leads’ families and Cold River history. Zack is such an intense hero, all that sternness, hardness and loneliness mixed together and then crumbling down when a clumsy heroine intervenes and slowly deconstructs his walls. There’s an innocence and authenticity about Janie that is very refreshing and appealing. She’s a truly genuine person and her generosity and compassion are remarkable. I really liked the suspense about each lead’s family issues and backgrounds. Zack’s stoicism becomes a bit unjustified when secrets are unveiled (and I felt he loses a bit of charisma in the process; he also becomes a bit sappy in the end). Caitlin Crews really knows how to write about passion, intensity, strong emotions and sexual tension and steam, and the book doesn’t disappoint in those aspects. A very satisfying read!
I enjoyed this book all the way through, but the resolution was my favorite. Janie is a travel nurse, who is caring for a wonderful old lady who is also the neighbor of the local sheriff, Zack. He is sure something about Janie is suspicious, but the, Zack is pretty much suspicious of everything - he lives in a very black and white world.
Some of the things I loved most were: Janie's insights about people and feelings. The old-lady - she was a character. Zack finally communicating with his family - he's been so distanced for three books! Although I think even just reading this book, you'd get that.
And my top thing I loved was how everything resolved.
Thanks to netgalley and the author and publisher for letting me read this book and series!
This was a nice end to the Kittredge Ranch series. Was it my favorite? No. But it was still enjoyable and a good finale to the series.
The one thing that keeps me from giving this 4 stars is Zack. He honestly wasn't that likable of a person for most of the book. He was judgmental and everything was either black or white with him. And once he set his mind on something, he stuck with those long-held beliefs. It took a clumsy red head for him to start seeing the world around him differently. But even then, we spend most of the book frustrated with his lack of give regarding his family and with his biases of those in his community (he was suspicious of Janie and her motives for a lot of the beginning chapters). The only thing he had going for him was he was hot and he was kind to Damaris, the elderly neighbor who Janie cared for.
Janie is a clumsy redhead new to town and in search of her biological family, or what she hopes is her family roots. She was raised by her grandparents after her mom died during childbirth, but her grandparents left her a letter after their death with clues to who her dad's family may be. She's an elder care nurse, so she decides to take on a client in Cold River, where her dad's family is supposedly from and while there, investigate her roots and lay down some while she's there.
Janie meets Zack in the diner in a 'meet cute' moment I guess, if you call spilling your coffee on the man cute. It was quite comical, that's for sure. After a while though, her tripping all the time became old. I get it, I am pretty clumsy myself, but after a while, shouldn't she just pay attention to where she's going? Then there's the constant blushing. Every.single.chapter. we have to hear about her blushing and turning beet red, or as the author liked to keep repeating, borscht (learned a new word though). I was about to turn into a Madea meme - "say "..." one more time." I did like Janie as a person though. She was kind, gentle, patient and non-judgmental.
I did enjoy seeing Zack loosen up and actually listen to Janie when she offered him some perspective on his family and life in general. Again, he was stubborn and it was quite painful at times watching him treat Janie in that dismissive way. But for the most part, once he got over his suspicions of her, he was quite receptive to her advice. And he played along with the charm school thing, even though it was a weird addition to the plot on the author's part.
Zack and Janie were hot together, so I'll give the author that for writing great chemistry between the two. I wouldn't have pictured someone like Janie loosening the unmovable Sheriff up, but she somehow did with her down-t0-earth honest charm. And I had to admire Janie for sticking with the Sheriff even when he didn't deserve her compassion and loyalty.
It was nice for the author to wrap up the Kittredge family drama and give us some answers into why the family dynamic was how it was. I also liked that we got to see the previous Kittredge & Everett couples make an appearance many times and provide us with an update to their story.
I'll miss this group of characters, but I'm sure the author has more for us...maybe (like the Halls)?
I want a cowboy just like Zack! 🤠🐴 This is the first book I have read in this series and after finishing the story I added the others to my TBR list! I enjoyed the opposite’s attract trope blended with a bit of love saving the world trope. Together it created a riveting romance full of emotion and sizzling chemistry between Zack & Janie ❤️🔥 This is the perfect book to read while curled up in a nice warm blanket.
🖋🤠He doesn’t believe in love…
Traveling nurse Janie Atwood has come to Cold River to uncover old family secrets and maybe, if she’s lucky, find a new home. That the gorgeous, glowering sheriff next door thinks her caring for his elderly neighbor is a nefarious scheme is a bonus. Having never been anything but a good girl, Janie finds Zack Kittredge’s simmering suspicion an excellent reason to try being a little dangerous instead…
👩🏼⚕️She doesn’t believe in squandering it…
Sheriff Zack Kittredge is okay with being… intense. He takes his loner status as seriously as he takes his responsibilities to protect Cold River. And he thinks cheerful Janie might be a threat to the town. But the more he gets to know her, the more he faces the truth—she’s brighter than sunshine and he’s like a moth to her flame. When Janie suggests he could use a few charm school lessons, he surprises them both by accepting. He doesn’t need help. But it’s clear he might need her…
Because the only thing hotter than the summer sun in the Rockies is the forbidden passion that burns between them…
I encourage you to give this book a try!
4 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | 4 Flames 🔥🔥🔥🔥
📚I received a copy of this book from the publisher and I chose to offer this honest and unbiased review. 📚
Cold River sheriff Zach Kittredge believes there is something not right about the town's newest resident, Janie Atwood. Allegedly, Janie has moved in next door to Zach to act as a home health nurse for his aging neighbor, but he doesn't buy that story. He has solid evidence, the back ground check shows that all of her prior patients are deceased.
Traveling hospice nurse, Janie Atwood does have ulterior motives for moving to the small town of Cold River, but she is not ready to share those reasons with the sheriff. She is enjoying too much being a woman of mystery to the sexy lawman. The truth is that Janie has come to this sleepy town in Colorado to learn more about her family. She believes herself to be a direct descendent of the town's founding mother, bordello owner Madam Minerva, and all her research into the matter only makes Zach more suspicious. The Kittredge family has a large closet filled with their own numerous skeletons. Can Janie and Zach get beyond their pasts to create a future?
I love an angsty cowboy story. Caitlin Crews has recreated perfectly what it is like to live in a small town, everybody knows everybody else's business, trust me I know from personal experience. The Kittredge family has problems but they stick together and defend one another when it matters. I enjoyed the interplay between characters. I had already been reading another of Crew's 'Kittredge' cowboy stories when the opportunity to read about Zach and Janie became available. I will most certainly be seeking out and reading the rest of this series as well as the Cold River Ranch series.
I very much enjoyed reading this book. An engaging plot, delightful characters and the usual excellent narration by Caitlin Crews.
We finally find out why Sheriff Zack Kittredge is so intense, why he left the ranch on his eighteenth birthday. Misconstruing something he saw and his equally stubborn father's refusal to explain himself have left them estranged for years. Zack a real stick in the mud as far as his family is concerned, wound too tight and too controlling, which is great for a sheriff, but the man has serious issues. And while his siblings have all found their other half, Zack is not interested, thinking a woman for him would be as elusive as a unicorn, until nurse, Janie Atwood, trips and spills her coffee on him. He finds her bothersome and now she is living next door to him. Janie was raised by her grandparents, so it makes sense that she became a traveling nurse specializing in elderly people. But her current charge, Damaris Gardiner, is a live wire. But Janie has an ulterior motive for being in Cold River. With her will, her grandmother had left her a letter, telling her about her father and his people in Cold River Colorado. Janie is a delightful character, excited with the idea of Zack thinking her dangerous, when she has always been "friend-zoned" by men. She has things to teach him and he her.

Caitlin Crews’ Summer Nights with a Cowboy, book 3 of her Kittredge Ranch series, explores the forbidden passion simmering between Traveling nurse Janie Atwood and next-door neighbor Sheriff Zack Kittredge. Crews’ opening scene gets the novel off to an intriguing start, making me want to know more about Jack and Janie and discover Jack’s issue with her. She quickly sets up the tension and vibe between Zack and Janie that works for a sunshine heroine and grumpy hero. Initially, Zack comes off as a jerk, stalking around after Janie glowering and scowling at her with suspicion and disapproval for no good reason, and treating her rudely, antagonistically. But because she’s not only unbothered by it but likes his attention, you find yourself not taking it so seriously. Especially when you realize it’s all for show. The barely leashed sexual awareness flowing between them makes him uncomfortable, so he hides his true feelings behind denial and feigned dislike. Crew develops Zack, Janie, and their relationship with vibrant description, lively dialogue, and humorous, snarky, and fiery banter and emotional interactions. Their scenes with Zack’s family and town folk also reveal and further develop their characters.
Trying to discover/uncover secrets about her family, Janie comes to Cold River. She takes a job as a caregiver for Zack’s elderly neighbor. Believing Janie might threaten his town with some nefarious scheme, sheriff Zack keeps a close eye on her. Zack is an intense, gorgeous loner, a serious control freak, and viewed by his family as a saint. Janie is cheerful, courageous, and tenacious. The sweet, friendly, quintessential good girl, Janie’s always been just the cute friend, one of the guys, invisible until Zack noticed her—even if for ridiculous reasons. He makes her want to be dangerous, bad, seen, everything she’s not. Janie believes love is too special to be wasted. On the other hand, Sheriff Zack Kittredge doesn’t believe in love at all. These two are complete opposites who help each other make peace with their families and pasts and become whom they’re meant to be.
Unfortunately, the pacing is slow, and the story drags at some parts. I had difficulty connecting with Zack for most of the novel, which affected my enjoyment. However, later we discover things that reveal more about who he is and why he became the man he is that help to soften his character. I’m not sure that it could have been written differently, but I might have been less frustrated with his attitude toward Janie and enjoyed the story more.
Exploring themes of discovering family secrets, searching for a home, reconciling the past, and opening your heart to love, Summer Nights with a Cowboy is a sweet, humorous, angsty, charming romance small-town romances fans may enjoy.
