In this book the authors share their insight into refereeing soccer. Modern techniques of soccer officiating are exposed through the eyes of these seasoned professionals. Referees at all levels will benefit from this practical resource. Here are some of the helpful - The Art of Refereeing - Preparing for the Game - Setting the Tone for the Game - Recognition of Fouls and Misconduct - The Mysteries of Offside Revealed - Use and Misuse of Advantage - Free-Kicks - Control of the Game - Movement of the Referee - Preventive Refereeing - Fitness - The Mental Factors
This is a bit dated now, as there have been some minor changes to the Laws, but this is likely still the best book around about being high level soccer referees. It is full of practical advice for referees, especially about how to think about the game and the players. Of course, it is not a substitute for the current Laws and official advice to referees: it is a supplement.
Its one major weakness is its usefulness for referees, especially new ones, doing youth matches. Some of the advice given here is bad advice for the younger matches, which I infer the authors have never, or only rarely, reffed prior to writing this.
Solid treatise that could use some updating. It is geared to higher levels but some good bits on the psychology of the game and pride of the profession.
