All enemies of the Empire must die. But not her, she is mine to claim...
JAYNE: I've dedicated my life to defending clients against injustice, but the imposing alien male that's captured me doesn’t believe in innocent until proven guilty. All Commander Rexitor cares about is his precious Empire and I'm its biggest threat.
This alien is going to make sure I pay for my crime. Haalux justice is swift and brutal, just like him. But I believe in justice and I'm prepared to do anything to survive, even if it means defying him or the Empire.
But the one thing I'm not going to do is ask for his help, because what I see in his eyes means I'm going to have to give up far more that I bargained for if I do.
REXITOR: I didn't want anything to do with the criminal. She says she's innocent, but so do all the rest. She insists she understands justice, but what could a human know of justice?
The evidence speaks for itself - she's the killer. Jayne faces execution, and I'll lose the soft curves and quiet voice that calls to my primal side in a way I never thought possible.
Marked Haalux warriors like me don’t deserve a mate, I accepted that.
But she's here and destined to be destroyed in front of me.
Unless I claim her first.

Taken: Alien Commander's Captive de Hattie Jacks Serie Haalux Empire libro 1
Argumento:
This is not a bad story, but the writing style of the author isn’t really the type I love to read. The storyline itself was good, plenty of action. But at times I felt a little lost in what was going on. Others may love the way the author writes.
This is one of the better sci-fi alien romances I have read-- and I have read many of them. Taken: Alien Commander's Captive follows Jayne and Rexitor as they navigate Jayne's abduction from the earth, Rexitor's reclamation of his rightful place in the empire, and all the cultural/political drama that ensues.
I love the fact that the FMC is 38 years old and not an 18 or 19-year-old child... I hate it when romances have teens as the MCs in adult romances, but it's hard to find FMCs over 30 no matter what the genre is. All ages deserve to be represented in literature, but to people over the age of 25, an 18-year-old looks and acts like a kid, so it's weird to always have them as hyper-sexual MCs. The FMC also does not struggle with her fertility (an annoying trope that seems to affect anyone over 35 in books) and there is no big deal made about her age or childbearing ability. The fact is that a 38-year-old is not a child, but they are also not old yet either. It's a relief that this author understands that and gives actual adults a chance to shine, be smutty, and find happiness. (I'm only 30, but I love seeing all ages represented.)
Next, I really appreciated the fact that one of the prominent species in the book, which is much more ancient than humans, has not evolved all that much beyond human silliness. For example, there is still a clear gender role expectation (The women are expected to breed, but otherwise can do what they want), and political strife and manipulation are at play. I think the author delved into a deep truth that some people don't like to face: We may have mostly tapped out on our potential to evolve in a positive sense, and almost everything runs in cycles. Evolution, contrary to mainstream understanding, is not synonymous with improvement, and Hattie Jacks hit the nail on the head as she acknowledges that. It is not cynical to suggest that a species will never be perfect or that it takes millennia to move just a fraction of an inch forward. Our collective narcissism as humans makes us believe that we're the best things in the universe and that we've come a long way mentally when we're actually experiencing many of the same social issues that occurred 8,000+ years ago (SA, cheating, jealousy, political power plays, etc.). And in fact, we are not that different cognitively from the Neanderthals! I love that the author has enough human social experience and sci-fi knowledge to recognize that perfection isn't possible, even for fictional cultures. (And neither I or the author are saying that improvement ISN'T possible. I think we would both just agree that development is painfully slow and messy. It takes millions of years just for small genetic things to adapt... It makes sense that social refinement would take its time as well. And Jacks makes it clear that the true-born leader of the old Haalux line WILL bring healing to the empire, so we still get our HEA!)
The author also busts up the DNA modification trope by explaining that meddling with genetics actually held an entire culture back in this story! I am not for the demonization of cutting-edge science or genetic mods, but it's nice to see that scientific progress does not correlate with benefits all the time.
This book is a great balance of smut and plot! The character development is good, though I wish I could learn even more about Jayne's earth life! =) This is only the first installment in the Haalux Empire series, and I am definitely a fan! The deeper social commentary combined with all the *steam* was just what the doctor ordered for me!
I made it to Chapter 20 so it gets 2 stars. Two main issues - one of which should be brought up to the reading community for discussion IMO. Namely, there is a difference between the genre “Alien Romance” and “Alien Erotica”. Not having a separate category does both a disservice especially for Alien Erotica which will always be given (should be given) lower ratings in the Alien Romance category. It is a different descriptive method of telling a story. Unfortunately, this book falls under “Alien Erotica”. Second issue I have I captured an example in my last highlight. The story finally demonstrates some realism and seriousness in support of the underlying plot, when idiocy, usually in support of pending erotica, is interjected. It’s emotional/mood whiplash. Not something I enjoy.
I gave up halfway through the book after Ms Damsel in Distress was once again abducted (really bad, because the aliens this time were super ugly). Only hot aliens have the right to kidnap lone maidens after all.
Various strings of political intrigue tangle together to bring at attorney running away from disgrace (Although if in the US, she didn't do anything that would result in any sort of sanction or anything) with a Haalun commander fighting to prove himself against a perceived physical birth imperfection.
The Haalun culture is well developed. It isn't advanced or backwards - it's a mixture of both, and there is a continued fight over which direction is the right way to go. High fertility rate is valued due to their colonialism, but genetic tampering has limited things, and sexual cycles and sexual reproduction are handled in horrible and often painful ways. The culture is high tech, but men perceive women as being the means of reproduction. In practice, women run the scenes as much as anyone, it's just not something recognized by all of the men, and the women are perfectly content to let the men be idiots as long as they can go about their lives.
Genetic history becomes a political issue and fertility is empowered to be the deciding factor between the continuation of an eons old species (and plot twist, it doesn't just come down to an argument between 'purity' of genetics, though that is one argument presented.)
The relationship between our main characters is perfectly awkward at first. They are both rigid in their own ways, both having always been focused solely on career as a replacement for being undervalued by family or society. Being abducted and accused of murder is enough to shake Jayne lose of those habits, and veneer of Rex's culture and his assumptions falling apart is enough to shake his.
And there are sweet friends helping them along the way, and an even sweeter cute critter named Fitz who come to the aid of the couple during their trials to win the day. (Fitz deserves all the credit though. And snacks)
Jayne was kidnapped from Earth beaten and drugged until she was taken from the merchant ship by the Haalux. Now she’s on trial for murder. Rex is assigned to guard the prisoner, but soon starts having lustful feelings. Just as she’s trying to prove her innocence she’s kidnapped again and Rex is declared a traitor. There’s lots of action, betrayal and surprises as they both fight their way to the heart of Haalux to save the empire.
I am currently reading this series. Book 1, Taken, with Rex and Jayne was very good. The Empire is under attack by The Unseen, which are the proverbial bad guys throughout the series. Rex and Jayne's love story is an excellent beginning to the series, which has good character development and great world building. Jayne was abducted by The Unseen and made to look like she was an assassin. This first story is centered around proving her innocence. Thankfully she is an excellent litigator from earth. No spoilers but Rex is not what he seems! This is a good fated mate story with a HEA, and you don't have to read the next book, but of course where's the fun in that? I totally recommend this feel good book! Now on to book 2!
Kidnapped from Earth by Aliens. Evil aliens taking people from a place they shouldn't. Taking them for their own gain. Then taken again. These women find themselves in a nightmare of alien creatures who treat them badly.
This alpha scary beautiful alien is looking to be the best but always being told he is worthless despite fighting his way to the top. He finds himself fighting a war against those who don't want him to reveal who he is. It is amongst this hostile enemy that he finds his fated. A human woman who is accused of murder.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in this series.
I got the physical copy because this isn’t on KU unfortunately so I did force myself to finish this to get my moneys worth lol even tho I really just wasn’t invested in it.
Jayne is just too back and forth you don’t really get to know her besides she was a lawyer that lost it all from a bad case. Literally nothing else.
Rex was just too alpha male for me like it was just sex sex sex and he’s superior bc he’s Haalux. You don’t get any details on him either besides he lost a crew he was a caption of and has to prove himself again. Besides that nothing.
I like a lot of hatties work so I was disappointed but they can’t all be a hit with everyone lol.
Steam- 3.5/5 lots of it. Basically all the do with each other lol
This is all my personal opinion, as somebody who doesn’t necessarily like alien romance. My review is made for the laughs and giggles.
I described this book as reflective on another review app because it made me reflect on my life choices. I am flabbergasted, and honestly completely discombobulated. I don’t know why I decided to read this, but I suppose it is because I needed content to traumatise my friends. I did not expect a pregnancy, or how little time it took for them to start getting it on. Please cease the spilling of your seeds in her, I have had enough with seeds; we are not planting trees, and please stop trying to make a family tree, thank you. I am sure my friends hate me for sharing with them my finds.
Writing-wise, it felt a little disconnected (her previous job/parents/life on earth to being abducted (which happened too often to keep track of)). There was no way he could possibly fit ‘like a glove’ inside her hoohaa. And how awfully convenient that his ‘defects’ turned out to be because he is royalty. Furthermore, it felt like it could’ve been split perfectly in half. It felt like two books in one, and perhaps that was why it took so long to read, when compared to my other reads.
Sometimes, I pray that she would just shut up. Every so often, she would say something witty and agreeable, but most of the time, she needs to keep her opinions locked inside that alien infested mouth. Also, why did she touch another alien’s crotch?
Overall, I am traumatised, but I suppose I brought it onto myself. I shall be sharing my pain with my peers, in hopes that I will not suffer alone. Thank you for this experience—I wish I could return to the person I was before I read this.

New author and series for me - Pleasantly surprised & highly recommend
This is the first story I have read by Hattie Jacks so I wasn’t sure how it would be. So many alien PNRs have a similar storyline, but they have become such a guilty pleasure for me that I continue looking for new stories / series / authors.
So when I found this one, I decided to give it a try based upon the fact that multiple stories are available to read now and the synopsis provided. I have now become a fan!
The storyline is strong, and while there is a common theme of abduction, the method and backstory is quite unique and enjoyable for the genre with a couple of surprises! I just love surprises in a story, but I have to admit that I don’t get to experience too many of them any more.
There are a few grammatical issues throughout, including: - missing words such as “that”, “a”, “an” - incorrect words such as “to” iso “do” - extra words that appear in a sentence that I believe was revised but the original verbiage not fully deleted
Warning: contains subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy intimate scenes and violence such as kidnapping / abduction, human trafficking, assault, torture, fighting with some to the death, treason, betrayal, etc.
To me, this is a story of the underdog that has been able to overcome everything thrown their way (from the circumstances of their birth, parents’ mating and perceived physical deformities). It is also about redemption and learning the importance of trusting again (both yourself and others).
Lots of other subtopics, but somehow Hattie makes them work in conjunction with one another to bring forth a strong start to a new series. Will definitely be reading the next story in the series!
If you like books where aliens abduct/come across women and then mate with them because they really, really need more progeny on their home planet... then this is the kind of book you will enjoy. Rex is a 'hot' commander alien who instantly has feelings for Jayne when they take her captive (she's been accused of murder). And, pretty quickly, she's pregnant with his baby.
Look, I love a good wild smut book, and this has some decent sex scenes, I suppose.
Where this loses star ratings: lots of plot holes. The entire "she murdered someone" plot is never actually resolved effectively. Jayne/the author just assert "I proved my innocence" and look, honestly, you really never did. You came up with good evidence to suggest you didn't but... that entire thing was never solved where the aliens would have known you were innocent (I mean, later we find out there's traitors and stuff and so like, yeah, guess she was innocent but... that's all shaky).
There's a lot of traitors. It gets a little silly with how many people are back-stabbing one another and such. I mean, the plot just needed to get cleaned up a little bit.
My biggest plot issue: Rex is described as being pretty alien, right? He has these claw like nails... and then in a scene he's got those "claw like nails" all up inside of her... I mean... he makes love like a human man when really he isn't (and that kills the alien vibes for me). We really should have had more fleshed out details about him, and then had those details match the sex scenes. No lady is going to be like... shove those huge claws up in me. Rub the pearl with claws. I mean... no.
Overall, it was stupid fun still. 3.75 stars. Just not quite 4.
This book was given to me as a free copy. DNF at 68% & I'll start with not my trope. I could not handle the amount of times they mention she was pregnant. Definitely couldn't get over the fact she said she didn't want children, but the doctor went behind her back and made that possible. Just a nope for me. Probably great read for others.

Fritz a pris l ! Mon humble avis :

**MEDIUM TO MAJOR SPOILERS** This book is the first book of the Haalux Empire series. It can be read as a standalone. Several characters from later books are mentioned or introduced. Jayne is a human and was abducted from earth. The reason for her abduction is never made clear, nor do you find out who did it. The book begins at a point sometime after it happened. She is accused of killing an ambassador. Jayne is injured by the aliens who have kept her before the Haalux rescued her. She is to be given medical care so she can stand trial. The drugs act as both a truth serum as she tells Rex how much she is attracted to him as well as making her lust filled or it intensifies how she feels. Both results seem like an obvious and unnecessary storyline. The lust and attraction are a constant part of the book. Jayne’s emotions and reactions are all over the map. It felt overly dramatic and unrealistic. Some things just seemed done for the effect. The Haalux seemed to be extraordinarily interested in her and it was not clear why. She was also treated better than one would expect by her captors. Jayne also does something painful to one of the men to make a point that, if the sexes had been reversed, it would have been poorly thought of. It probably was meant to show that she was spunky, and it might have been done for humor. I did not think it was humorous. Rexitor, or Rex, is assigned guard duty for her until the trial. It was unclear why a commander would be given this responsibility. Early in the story, he touches her without permission. He is immediately attracted to her and the medic suspects that Jayne is Rex’s mate. While he should have known better in terms of giving people their own space generally, I am not sure what he understands about male/female interactions. The empire has changed men so that they only get ready to breed every 5 turns (years?). Rex’s first breeding cycle was a failure, and he had spent most of the time on a machine for 30 days. Rex is considered low class and inferior by other Haalux. He is trying to overcome these things and get promoted. There are markings on his face which are very meaningful, but at the beginning of the book, no one seems to understand what they mean, and he is looked down upon because of it. Later in the book, it seems that many people know what they mean and it was not clear why the meanings did not matter sooner. In addition, some people did know about it but did not explain it to him. I did not think there was a good reason for him not to know. Towards the end of the book, an important raid happens. It was done with the sketchiest of plans. No thought was made about how to introduce vitally important information. There was little to no back up plan. Rex is a commander and I would have thought he would have been more strategic and tactical in his thinking. Jayne also does something spontaneous during the raid that did not seem fully thought out. She suspects a betrayal by someone who she thought was a good person. He wants to explain but she did not give him a chance. The result was that she causes trouble for herself. Supposedly, she is quite bright, but she did not always show it. Rex is defeated a few times in the book but continues to assert that he will always look after Jayne. I believe the intention is there and it is meaningful, but I thought the author could have made him a little more successful at it. There is not enough character development. There is also not enough relationship development. The book has a lot of s*x scenes, and it felt like some of the story was just filler between them. In the Haalux empire, women are thought of as breeders. Their society seems pretty chauvinistic. However, Rex respects Jayne’s intelligence. The author was inconsistent about whether patting Jayne’s pet would cause a reaction or not. Some word usage was incorrect. I do not plan to continue the series. I do not recommend the book.
As far as Jayne is concerned it is official. Aliens suck. Even insanely sexy ones like Rexitor with his intriguing markings. They are convinced that she killed someone. Even has a video showing her guilt, but they are going to have her stand trial when they reach the Haalux empire. With a bit of luck this entire issue will be sorted and she can go home.
Jayne wakes up on board yet another alien ship. She was so very done with aliens. At least these ones weren't keeping her drugged and out of it all of the time. In fact, the doctor in the med bay has been surprisingly kind to her. If only Commander Rexitor could see that she was not guilty of the murder they say she committed maybe he would take her home.
This book jumps perspectives from Jayne to Rex so that we can see the story unfolding in different ways. We can see how people treat Jayne and Rex separately and together. This is definitively an open door and there is a pregnancy in the book as well. I know that is an immediate turn off for some, so I wanted to give that disclosure.
While this is book one in a series this definitely seems like a series that will have to be read in order. We get to know the Haalux background and history in this book and without that and Rex's story anything that comes next may prove difficult. I am definitely not against reading more by this author in the future.
Let's travel out to space to the Haalux Empire. So here we have Jayne who was kidnapped, drugged and now going to trial against the Empire for a crime that was committed. The question is did she commit the crime. Well we learn a lot about Jayne and her story is interesting. Someone else who happens to be interesting is Rex. He is a Commander in the Haalux army. Now he has an extra mark on his body that makes him feel like an outsider. So he is always determined to be better than everyone. When a mission went wrong he was given a different post. He just happens to be the one to guard Jayne. Something stirs for both of them and I can't say that I was not steamy because good lord was it. However, he does try to fight the pull but it seems to get harder the more he tries to help Jayne and gets to know her. So do we have action in this book. Um yes, there is fighting and seems to be betrayal going on. Then we find out that some crazy stuff is going on in the empire. What the heck is going on. We need to know who this unseen is? Will Rex and Jayne get a happily ever after. Get ready for a few tears. I was not prepared for everything that happened in this book. I was totally invested and want more.
Taken: Alien Commander's Captive is the first book in The Haalux Empire series by Hattie Jacks. The series is made up of five steamy Sci-fi romances. I have enjoyed my first foray into Ms. Jacks work, pulled into all the action and adventure as these fated mates traversed all the ups and downs along the way to their HEA. With alpha alien warriors, politics, agendas, drama, angst, danger, tension, mystery, action, emotion, and lots of sizzle- this series certainly made it hard to put down for any length of time when the real world demanded my attention. The Series Contains: -Taken: Alien Commander’s Captive (Book #1) -> Commander Rexitor and Jayne’s story. -Crave: Alien General’s Obsession (Book #2) -> General Kylar and Tara’s story. -Havoc: Alien Captain’s Alliance (Book #3) -> Captain Bron, Lexi, and Rheon’s story. (MFM) -Bane: Alien Warrior’s Redemption (Book #4) -> Jak and Eve’s story. -Traitor: Alien Hunter’s Mate (Book #5) -> Terx and Stella’s story.
This has been a great introduction to Ms. Jacks work, and now I am looking forward to reading more of her books, asap. Happy Reading…
Jayne was abducted by aliens, and for the past while has spent most of her time alternately being beaten, and being drugged up. It surprises her to discover she has been blamed for murdering an important Haalux, even though she has no recollection of it, nor does she believe it. Rex, the Haalux sent to guard her, believes in Jayne’s innocence. And when they strike sparks off of each other, her realizes she is his mate. The murder charge is just the tip of the iceberg though, with a much more nefarious plot underlying everything that happens to them…
This was another enjoyable sci-fi romance from the author, with plenty of action and adventure. The characters are interesting, the background plot full of twists and turns as it took you deeper. I liked several of the side characters enough to look forward to their own stories being told!
A thoroughly entertaining read for sci-fi romance fans.
And for what it’s worth… I remember the Adventure Game, it was a favourite show of mine as a kid… especially the “avoiding the alien” on the web thing at the end!
This is a great 1st story of the feather haired Haalux's warriors. Commander Rex is a Haalux who has Always had to prove himself. Looking different to others of his kind makes him feel as though he needs to be better then his comrades. Being Commander is a great accomplishment . He is on his way. Until he was assigned to essentially become a guard to a suspected criminal. An Alien female . A female that he has Never seen before in all of his travels.
Jayne has been abducted , and finds herself embroiled in a terrible situation. On an ALIEN PLANET !!!!!! Aliens exist !! Jayne has been drugged and beat and she doesn't know what to do . And then a tall , sexy , yes Alien, is supposed to make sure she doesn't ," escape ", justice !! Where is she gonna GO ???
This book was a great read for me . I found the characters memorable and thought that their chemistry was a slow burn that was sweet and I enjoyed getting to know the Haalux empire. Looking forward to the next book in this series !!
I thoroughly enjoyed this well written story about two very different people. Much as I liked Rex and Jane some of the other beings are downright nasty. Abducted and drugged for months then 'rescued' by other aliens Jane finds herself charged with killing Ambassador Roi. She is irresistably drawn to the Haalux Commander Rexitor and his gorgeous Hallen, while Rex is as drawn to her. Their mutual attraction is instant and powerful but how he can feel this way when it is not even his Zycle? As she learns her fate if convicted of the killing Rex does all he can to help her defense. The footage of the kill must be false because he will not believe his mate is a murderer. He soon learns people and events are being manipulated on a scope far beyond his imagination. The powerful 'Unseen' are planning something and it is all up to Jane, her mate Rex and a handful of others. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Jayne is a human kidnapped from Earth, drugged, and framed for the murder of a Haaluxan diplomat. It is Commander Rexitor’s task to hold her until the trial. Jayne is a lawyer and believes in justice as she tries to prove her innocence. Over time, he begins to see she may not be as primitive as he believed. This also opens his mind to perhaps accept that there is more to this murder than it had first appeared. With Jayne facing execution, is there a way he can save her?
I enjoyed this story since it had a different kind of story line than we usually see in a sci-fi adventure like this. I enjoyed the characters and the story line keeps the reader intrigued in the outcome of what may seem like a hopeless situation. If she can convince Rexitor that there is valid question about the diplomat’s true killer, maybe he can help her? Or maybe he will realize they are fated mates?
Jayne is going to be tried for a crime she did not commit (sorry to all those who now have the A-Team in their heads). She has been stolen from Earth, shot full of goodness-knows what, beaten and then somehow ended up on another alien spaceship accused of having murdered an ambassador. Rexitor, or Rex, has climbed to the rank of Commander despite his lowly start fighting to get where he is now. He is tasked with looking after Jayne to ensure that she makes the trial. In spending time with her he sees that she is not the "primitive species" that he expected and also that there may be more to the murder than anticipated. Is there also more to it all and could they be each other's means of escape.

The human female lead has been kidnapped from Earth and framed for murder. The male lead has been placed in charge of keeping her secure until trial when he realises that she’s his fated mate. As she, an Earth lawyer, attempts to prove her innocence, he tries to keep her safe in a world that is trying to kill them, working to uncover internal and external intrigues.
The character and relationship development is significant and the sexual interactions are hot and plot relevant. The story is dual POV, well written, and a great introduction to a world with the potential for many more stories. However, I did think that the final relationship conflict was resolved a bit too simply.

Such a great read. Full of adventure and emotion. This tells the story of a human lawyer, lost with her career - Jayne. She ends up kidnapped, accused of murder, bonded to the sexy Rex and then hunted still for unknown reasons early on. Rex is at first confused by his attraction to his prisoner, but as time passes they grow together. This is a full on adventure, with a lot of bad guys, politics, hidden good guys and old friends reappearing. They do get their HEA but what a ride to that point. Your emotions are up and down as each phase is met and worked through, but a wonderful story, all the same. I can't wait for the next one!
