But I Flourish: Learn to Thrive in Every Season
Do you ever feel stuck? Does a life of meaning and purpose feel like it will have to wait for another day-for when the demands on you are less, and time and resources abound? Aimée Walker understands this struggle. She spent years waiting for such a day, believing that only then would the thriving life she'd imagined for herself be possible. That's when God arrested her attention with a statement King David made in the midst of "But I flourish." These three words made her realise she didn't need to wait for circumstances to change-she could flourish now. And so can you.
Interweaving David's story with the attributes of three trees referenced in the Psalms, this book is Aimée's own journey of stripping back her preconceived ideas of what flourishing looked like in order to understand it from God's perspective. A Biblical guide to a life of growth and lasting fruitfulness, you will learn
- Embrace where God has you - Overcome hindrances to your growth - Understand your identity and purpose - Find strength through connection
You'll discover you don't have to keep waiting for 'another day' to live the life God purposed for you, and be equipped to start growing and thriving right where you are-regardless of how barren or fertile that place may feel. By God's grace, growth is always possible and purpose can be found in every season.

About the author
Aimee Walker
2 books14 followersA former pastor turned writer, Aimée lives by the beach in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband Dave and three of their four children. These days you’re most likely to find her writing in the margins, with a cup of strong black coffee in hand as she juggles the beautiful chaos of family life and tries to keep up with her kids who range in age from five to twenty-six.
A total word girl, but most of all a lover of God’s Word, Aimée is passionate about helping people understand and encounter the truth of the Scriptures so they can live in the fullness of all God has planned and purposed for their lives. “But I Flourish” is her first book. She has also written nine Bible Studies (and counting) that have been released
through The Joyful Life Magazine, and writes for the magazine while overseeing their online communities in her role as their Community Manager.
She's not as organized as she'd like to be, usually has too many books on the go (which is evidenced by the MANY piles of books around her house), and even though she professes to be great at multi-tasking, if you want her to make you a cuppa and talk to you at the same time, the conversation will win every time!
So pull up a chair, and join her in conversations about life and faith and loving God with wholehearted devotion--you'll get the coffee eventually!

Aimee reached out on Instagram about sending me her book, as it spoke EXACTLY to the season of life I’m in, and I am so, so grateful for this one. It was so encouraging, full of biblical truth and sound wisdom, warm and honest, and full of beautiful analogies that spoke right to me (olive trees! like my olive branch tattoo!!!). I hiiiiighly recommend this one if you’re struggling to know how to find hope and thrive in your current season of life, and I’m so grateful this one found me when I needed it.

If you are someone who has struggled to grasp God’s call on your life while in the midst of life’s ups and downs, then this book can help immensely.
Aimee is honest about her own personal journey as a writer, pastor, mother and wife, and shares some deeply moving moments from her life in an effort to paint a picture of God’s woven tapestry in her world.
Her use of trees throughout as both example and truth from the Bible were beautiful, and I truly resonated with her descriptions of the Lebanese cedars. I still can’t get their stunning images out of my mind, and how representative of our growth with Christ and one another! They grow “close together, forming vast forests that stretched for hundreds of kilometres. Often when trees grow close to other trees, their branches stretch out in the opposite direction and all their growth ends up on one side, but the cedars of Lebanon extend their branches toward one another, becoming entwined together as they grow.” (Pg 137)
Aimee weaves biblical truth together with personal experience and evident research as she offers her readers a chance to explore God’s love for them, God’s call for them and God’s provision for them. Many times throughout the book, it was as if Aimee were writing my own story or speaking directly to me.
I have never found myself so drawn to the Psalms, particularly those that speak of the trees she writes about, but with Aimee’s book I have learnt more about that book of the Bible and the imagery used within.
At the end of each chapter, Aimee also includes a handful of helpful journaling questions to reflect on the words that have just been read, and to encourage the reader to dig deeper into their own story & journey with God.
I found the book stunning with the imagery used, wonderfully personal and open, well-rooted in the Word of God and a useful tool for me to use in discovering how to flourish the way God intended in my own life.

Such a relevant and inspiring read. The author says this book is intended as a guide for us to flourish in every season, and she has achieved exactly that- there are so many insightful nuggets that seem to not only meet you right where you are but encourage real, actual change.
Aimee masterfully draws together the stories of scripture and beautiful Biblical imagery with her own, often very difficult, experiences in But I Flourish- giving the reader a book so relatable, you think she knows your story, has lived your experiences too.
This book is filled with honest admission, wisdom and practical searching questions in an easy-to-read, gracefully illustrative style.
I will be returning to re-read it again and again as different seasons of life unfold. I highly recommend But I Flourish to every woman who has experienced, is in the midst of, or may one day go through a spiritual desert, which is, everyone.

But I Flourish is life giving! It came at a perfect time!! I love that each chapter ends with some questions to ponder and a prayer. It's perfect to go through individually, but I would recommend grabbing some girlfriends and some coffee and read through. You will not be disappointed!

Just finished reading this for the 2nd time and I know I’ll read it again in the future. Each time I got more out of it, it’s helped me realise I can flourish again, I can be the well watered tree now, in the season I find myself in. I highly recommend this for anyone who is wanting to get some nourishment, to be refreshed. It will encourage you to seek God again or deeper.

Love this book, full of wisdom. I definitely will come back and re-read over time. The reflective questions genuinely prompted some serious thinking for me

This was a lovely and relatable book! Aimee had so many well-written insights about flourishing as a follower of Jesus. Based on the life of David and her own personal story, the book is divided into several sections: flouring in your season, your heart, your calling, and your relationships. I appreciated her wisdom and highlighted so many parts of this book!
This quote especially spoke to me: "The simple truth is, I cannot receive all that the Father longs to pour into my life when I'm frantically running from one thing to the next, always busy, always striving. Abiding and dependence require a slowing of pace and of heart. If I want to live a fruitful, flourishing life, I must shift my emphasis from doing to being. I must learn to be present to God; I must cultivate intimacy with Him."

TL;DR If you’re frustrated by deferred dreams, a broken heart, and too many unanswered questions, this is for you. God means for you to flourish here and now, not “one day when.”
How do I condense everything this book means to me in a few brief sentences? From the very first chapter, I felt seen, understood, and comforted. After years of wrestling with restlessness, never seeming able to thrive in my season, heart, calling, and relationships the way Christ promised, to find not only my own inner monologue printed on the page but God-centered truth staring back at me was almost too much. Every chapter offered something soothing to my hurried, frustrated soul; by the time I finished, I can truly say I am not the same person.
Walker has written a book that is both incredibly vulnerable and incredibly powerful. She shares her personal tragedies, disappointments, hopes, and dreams alongside often-overlooked details from Psalms 52 and 92, using three special trees and examples from King David’s life to fully illustrate the design of God’s intended flourishing for His precious children. Little is held back and much treasure is given.
"But I Flourish" is a must-read for anyone battling thoughts of inadequacy, failure, or the lie of “one day when” thinking. God means for us to flourish in every circumstance, right where and when we are, trusting and abiding in Him as the great Father He is, allowing Jesus to cover our shortcomings and the Holy Spirit to empower us. If you’ve ever doubted that, this book will gently take your hand and walk to you to the other side.
A bit of advice: Don’t skip the reflection questions at the end of each chapter. It’s tempting, especially because Walker’s easy-yet-deep writing style makes it easy to get swept along, but they are powerful opportunities for transformation. Meditate on them, pray and write them out, let them get into your soul. You’ll be amazed what God reveals—and heals—in you.
10/10, will be buying multiple copies to give to people I know need exactly this: a short book that’s easy to read yet jam-packed with Scriptural truth, deep insight, and gentle strength.

Aimee writes with an open vulnerability, almost as if she's sharing her life over a coffee with you, instantly disarming me which endeared me to keep reading. She graciously exposes her personal life challenges, then explains in clear every day language how she overcame them - and here is the unique beautify of this book - it's not an autobiography of life stories, but a collection of stories illustrating how her belief in the Jesus of the bible and His power, helped her to not just 'get by' but to actually stand tall and flourish like a deeply rooted tree.
This book is hope filled, real and gritty, engaging and applicable. Aimee writes with a generosity as she gives the reader her tools and experience for knowing hope, peace and joy amidst no matter what!
I love that each chapter is paused with carefully articulated questions , which made me interact with the book and challenge myself. But I didn't pause long as wanted to read on! I will definitely be using this as a reference book to keep returning to.
I will be gifting my daughters (17 & 19 years) as well as sisters, friends and much older Aunties with their own copies, as I am confident Aimee's message is so needed in the challenging world we live in, as well as will resonate with readers of all ages and stages of life.

Aimee Walker in her new book, But I Flourish, brings forth wisdom from her own brokenness. Because of her openness on the pages, I felt like I was meeting with a friend or loving mentor who wanted to see me thrive and struggle less amidst my tumultuous circumstances. It was as if I had sat down with her at a coffee shop and had just been gifted a friend sharing her heart with me, revealing the goodness of God as she shared. I felt less alone as Aimee graciously shared victory amongst the trials. Somehow she eloquently gifted me to see the beauty of my journey as she detailed her own and wove in powerful truths from Gods Word. This book is a gift that blessed me greatly.
I highly recommend, But I Flourish, because it will be a refreshing read no matter what you may be walking through. It is a perfect book for your own time with God or in a group with ladies. She has journal questions at the end of each chapter which makes it easy and simple to apply each valuable nugget of Gods truth into your life. Whether you have time to fit in five or thirty minutes to read, Aimee designed this book to accommodate any season you’re in.
I received a complimentary book edition and these opinions are my own.

When I started reading this book my family and I were going through a huge season of change with a new baby and new church. It was hard, and we were all tired, exhausted, feeling worn with the waiting and transitions. My heart found so much encouragement in But I Flourish- gentle reminders that God sees me, knows my heart, has good things for me, more for me- even in hard places.
The three trees Aimee writes about are beautiful metaphors for our lives and journey with Christ, and though I loved all of them the Cedars of Lebanon were probably my favourite for this season as they represented community- what I really really wanted and needed. Reading those chapters has given me the courage I've needed to find new friends as we begin again at a new church.
This review was based on a complimentary pre-release copy and I have loved this book so much I am ordering some to gift to friends. It will definitely be one I come back to again in times of transition.

Aimee writes beautifully in a a way the most worn out, discouraged of us can relate to so easily .
I was both refreshed and encouraged by this wonderful book , being filled with the comfort and knowledge through God's Word and the wonderful analogy of these three very special trees, having my eyes opened, that despite all my circumstances, I could still flourish, just as the wonderful author of this book did herself, whist getting alongside us in such a warm, humble way , recognising we can falter yet still be able to flouish through these scriptural reminders .
I had, along with others, here in New Zealand, the immense added privilege of being part of the Book Club and being guided and with the benefit of sharing, learning with others who were reading this amazing book.
It is a book that I will read, refer to often. I have it visible at all times , seeing those words on it's lovely Olive Green Cover ....'' But I Flourish"
Thank you Aimee .

Do you ever feel like a book is speaking exactly to the season you are in? At times, I felt like Aimée must have been reading my mind, since her insights were so relevant to my situation and struggles. Centering her book on the story of David and the trees referenced in the Psalms, Aimée seamlessly weaves Scriptural truths with her own personal experience to illustrate how we can flourish in our season, hearts, calling, and relationships. With the tone of a trusted mentor, she gently convicts and encourages us to be fruitful and thrive right where we are— words that are life-giving to those of us feeling discouraged or disappointed in the season we find ourselves in personally, professionally, or in ministry. A must read for anyone with the desire to flourish but needing a gentle nudge in the right direction, this is a book I will certainly return to and reference over and over again in the changing seasons of my own life.

Aimee Walker's book is a gentle reminder that God is the source of my flourishing which means I can flourish in every season, good and bad. I loved the connection to olive trees, palm trees, and cedars. Those cedars of Lebanon left a lasting impression when Aimee pointed out that, "often when trees grow close to other trees, their branches stretch out in the opposite direction and their growth ends up on one side, but the cedars of Lebanon extend their branches toward one another, becoming entwined together as they grow. If you cut one down, there will be visible gaps in the remaining tree. They remind us of our own need for one another, and the gaps that exist in our lives when we try to go it alone." There are so many nuggets of wisdom like that in this book.

Love this book! Also massively love the opportunity to journey with the author via her book club and retreat spaces, what a priviledge! Wisdom, passion and dynamic learning and growth experiences flow from these pages and inspire me to lean into The Divine whispers as I read. The questions prompts take this from a beautiful book, to a transforming application suitable for personal meditation or a group discussion.
Looking forward to reading this over and over through each season of messy, hectic family life and finding roots in each of the tree metaphors to ground and teach me to keep on flourishing!

Until I read But I Flourish, I honestly didn't realize I was stuck in places where I should be thriving. With vulnerability and compassion, Aimee weaves her own story into the narrative of King David, who was determined to flourish in spite of the many difficulties he faced in his life. I took notes, paused to reflect on the questions at the end of each chapter, and came away understanding myself better and ready to flourish right where I am. This book would also be useful for a small group study.

Candid, Biblically sound, and Encouraging
Struck by David’s metaphor of an olive tree flourishing despite its circumstances, Aimée traces the idea of “thriving over surviving” throughout Scripture as she recalls her most difficult seasons of suffering and how God’s word moved her from withering to flourishing.
Does a thriving existence feel far out of reach? This book is for you, dear friend.
I received an advance copy of the book before writing this review, but I would 100% use my own funds to purchase it. I will be purchasing it to gift in the future.

As a part of the launch team I was lucky enough to read the book in advance of its release. It's content is so rich I am still reading in fact!! I am really enjoying taking it chapter by chapter and working through the questions after each chapter so that I can grow and learn. I am so grateful for Aimee's ministry and the way she communicates Gods plan for us to not just struggle through the days, but to flourish...in every season. You won't be disappointed by this book, I am sure.

Aimee's words will breathe life right into your soul and her beautiful message will be a light to guide you through whatever season you may be walking through. Her authenticity speaks through each story she shares and her relationship with Christ is so evident and simply woven throughout the entire book so that you can't help but draw closer to Him as well. For the weak and weary soul, for the bitter or broken one, for the tired, the discouraged, and the lost...this book is a must-read!

I loved the images in this book of the olive, palm, and cedar trees that all can teach us how to flourish in every season of our life. This book is filled with powerful truths based on Scripture, and personal stories that illustrate these key ideas. Reading the book as part of the online book club was a wonderful way of applying these ideas and lead to significant growth. Aimee is very gifted and wonderfully encouraging. Recommend this book and the online book club brings even greater value

I found Aimees' book to be very real, insightful and relateable. I particularly enjoyed the imagery and meaning behind the cedar and palm trees. Especially, in relation to how I can actually flourish in my life, whatever my age, where ever I am and despite everything going on around me . I found some great keys in this book as to how I can do that, whatever season of life I find myself in.

Aimée weaves a beautiful true-to-life tale of hope and restoration. It's a story of flourishing where you are, with what you have, whatever your circumstances. Her detailed research and teaching brings Biblical stories to life. This a book for all seasons, and I know I'll return to it—I couldn't put it down. I see myself in Aimée's stories from her own life and relate to many of her experiences, challenges, and joys. This book has truly been a gift. I also highly recommend joining Aimée's book club.

I've read this book 3 times in the last 18 months, and each time I've been in a different season, struggling with different things and thriving in different areas. Each time, this book has been a gift to my soul. I love Aimée's writing, her mother-heart, her timely encouragement, and the stories she shares are so relatable! Highly recommend.

Aimée manages a gentle and informative mix of challenge, biblical story/history, and personal testimony that helps to draw you to a place of understanding and feeling seen. I appreciate the words of encouragement and challenge features within these pages.
It was a lovely read for Christian women.

So beautifully written, honest, practical and relavent. I loved this book so much that I put off reading the last few chapters because I didn't want the book to finish.

Once you begin this book you won't want to put down. The pace is refreshing, giving space to process and find yourself in the pages. There are four parts, each one focusing on a different aspect of flourishing: In your season, in your heart, in your calling and in your relationships. It also includes a Bible reading plan to go along with each chapter.
Aimee weaves her own story throughout, but the real focus of her book is finding meaning and purpose through Christ. In each season of our life there is a way to thrive, no matter what may be swirling around us. The way she uses Scripture and theology is so refreshing-- with context and truth. She doesn't just slip a few verses here and there, but she wrestles with it, explains it, brings it front and center.
Not important, but nonetheless something I enjoyed, was Aimee's New Zealand twist on things. Whether a word, phrase, or story I enjoyed the way it made its way onto the pages. It was never confusing, just fun!
(This review was based on a complimentary pre-released copy, however, I enjoyed it so much I will be purchasing a copy with my own money!)

Aimee is a woman with a beautiful heart and a talent with words. You will be changed by her vulnerable, lived story of flourishing during the desert times of life. She brings part of David’s story into our own world and breathes fresh life into its meaning. Grateful to be downwind of her wisdom and faithfulness as I struggle daily with waiting for a perfect “someday” for God’s best in my life.
