Deep Devil

Rate this book
Between the devil and the deep blue sea... is the last place you want to be.

Boone Fischer and Emily Durand have been through a lot in the past few years. A new beginning on the island of Cozumel is going their own dive boat, their own business, a new canine friend, and a room with a view. But a chance encounter with a staggeringly wealthy family and their luxury cruise line will bring pandemonium to this peaceful paradise.

In this fourth book of the best-selling Deep Series, Boone and Emily find themselves immersed in a world of wealth and privilege; where jealousy, greed, and deceit can lead down a dark path.

From drift dives in whipping currents to the claustrophobic confines of the infamous Devil's Throat; from the crashing waves on the "wild side" of Cozumel, to a massive mega-yacht on the high seas, Deep Devil will take you to fascinating places. Some beautiful... some deadly. "An exciting romp around the Caribbean with a cleverly twisting plot and action at every turn." - Nicholas Harvey, author of the AJ Bailey Adventure Series.

Boone-Emily is back! And what an adventure this one is! A billionaire Greek family with their fancy cruise ship, a diverse group of criminals hired to do someone's dirty work, drones, helicopters, Brixton the potlicker pup and more. It's non-stop suspense and action in the Caribbean, peppered with Emily's enthusiasm and laugh-out-loud humour and Boone's steadfast nature. Sullivan's excellent narration brings it all to life. All those accents: British, Greek, Caribbean, Russian and one from Wisconsin! What a great story with which to distract oneself from the drudgery of April 2021 life. Already looking forward to the next one!

Sullivan Does It Again

I absolutely love this series. There, now that that's out of the way, we can get on to the rest of the review. Nick Sullivan is an insanely talented author and narrator bringing to life two of the most unique and interesting characters (often referred to as a singular person "Boone Emily"). Boon and Emily are hilarious, interesting, and easy to follow to the ends of the earth (and I feel like with these stories we're going to keep going to beautiful places that I need to visit someday).

The cover of Deep Devil really intrigued me, I was trying to figure out how a drone and a huge yacht were going to be part of the story. Now, I won't spoil anything but they are major parts of it (especially the yacht).

I want to say that the parts of the book where Sullivan is talking about the different dives and the specific dive scenes are it's strength, but it's just one of them. Now, you can tell that Sullivan has a passion for diving and it floods into each book, but what these books really have going for them is their pacing and character building. In Deep Devil we're introduced to a rich family along with some goons that Boone and Emily keep running into. Each person is unique and adds their own flair to the story. And as I mentioned, Sullivan's pacing is top-notch. This story builds and builds and as you get closer to the end you're itching with anticipation.

Overall, I thought that Deep Devil was an excellent addition to the series and easily one of Sullivan's best books. The story and narration by the author were amazing and I absolutely flew through it.

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW. I think that with every book in this series, I keep saying that it's the best one yet. But this one really is the best one yet!

The tropical Caribbean destinations of each of these books make the stories even more engaging. Sullivan's descriptions take readers on a journey that includes sparkling ocean waters, underwater wonderlands, and of course, drinks and eats at a grass hut beach bar -- great for armchair travel. DEEP DEVIL takes us to Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, more familiar than the places in the first three books, but still exotic and exciting -- and full of intrigue and mystery.

The plot is great with divemasters Emily and Boone pulled into the world of the uber-rich, uber-messed-up people who dwell there. Twists, turns, and edge-of-your-seat action keep readers enthralled especially as the story ramps up to the big reveal.

Author Nick Sullivan's narration of the story is excellent. He's comfortable with his main characters and voices them perfectly. Particularly, I give him a tip of the hat for bringing Emily to life, in all her hilarious and sassy glory. He's been tweaking this character from the start and she's just right now.

With characters to loathe and love (including our favorite potlicker pup), an unforgettable setting, and a well-crafted story, DEEP DIVE is among my favorite books of the year. And I am thrilled that there are still two more books in the series that I can -- wait for it -- dive into right away.

Give me scuba diving, deception, and suspense all day long!!! I really enjoyed this high adventure tale on the sea by a new to me author, Nick Sullivan. A big fan of adventures around the Caribbean, I was glad to get the opportunity to read this one early!

Main characters, Boone and Emily, find themselves the guests on a high roller, luxury cruise from Cozumel to Grand Cayman. A wealthy Greek family, who owns the cruise line, has invited them to come along after a scuba diving mishap led Boone to rescue a member of their family. But there are others aboard the ship too - ones with ulterior motives. And that’s where everything goes awry.

Fast paced, suspenseful, and kept me turning the pages to figure out who “set it up”! Fun read! Now I need to go read Sullivan’s other books in the Deep series!

Today, I have the pleasure of reviewing the latest audiobook in “The Deep Series”. Book four is titled “Deep Devil”, and you can be assured there is a diabolical character in this story. The audiobook, like Mr. Sullivan’s others, is filled with mystery, suspense, action and plenty of under and above water adventures. What more could someone want to listen to during a continued pandemic? The book continues the activities revolving around the two main characters, Boone and Emily who have a great new life in Cozumel. They have settled down with a new boat along with owning their own dive business. What more could they ask for? However, this duo seems to have a knack for finding trouble and this is what makes The Deep Series so wonderful. The story is both written and narrated by Nick Sullivan, not something I often look for in an audiobook, but I have never been disappointed with his work. On a side note, if you like this genre of book, you may find similar authors like it at tropicalauthors.com which Mr. Sullivan calls out in the closing chapter of the audiobook. I recommend you give this one, and Mr. Sullivan’s other audiobooks, a listen. Even with a mystery and diving focus, the story appeals to so many different audiences. Because of this, everyone will find something to enjoy about it.

One of the things I can always count on while listening to one of Mr. Sullivan’s audiobooks is a good opening chapter giving the listener some background details making the story that much more enjoyable. I always find the closing chapter fascinating because it usually includes some thank you messages along with additional insight into a few of the items or locations used in the story. Sometimes I wish the closing chapter was at the beginning of the audiobook, but I understand why he puts it at the end. It makes me think of movies that give you a glimpse into the making while the credits roll. I find myself thinking back and recalling what he mentions and many of the subtle tweaks needed so he could fit it in the story. Mr. Sullivan creates a means for the listener to escape into the story and forget about the “new normal” we are all dealing with these past two years, and I was truly sad when it ended. Thank you for taking me away and brightening up my life a bit. Congratulations on the new pup as well! Mr. Sullivan’s writing style is picturesque and fitting for such beautiful locations found only in the Caribbean. His sentence structure and vocabulary are rich and fulfilling unlike so many other independent authors I have listened to in the past.

As with the previous audiobooks in the series, this one opens with plenty of action and intrigue. We have a mysterious family that has wealth beyond most, and they are dealing with an aging father who founded their shipping empire. It does not take long for the pair and this family to collide which leads the listener down a dark and complex path. Unexpected events begin happening and the team must solve this mystery before others get hurt, including themselves. I found the use of flashbacks and other tie-ins to previous stories fun and interesting. These helped me recall important reasons why the characters are who they are today. I will even say there was a reference to a Bigfoot which made me laugh out loud. I find Mr. Sullivan creates his characters with personality and each one is believable. Many authors focus only on story and have bland characters, yet this author has both a great story and characters.

Boone and Emily are still the same we have seen from previous books. They often banter and joke between themselves as most couples who have been together do. Each is able to easily read the other, yet in this story a new character may come between them. The question that runs for some time is if they will tear the couple apart or not. We are presented with some new characters while maintaining a few others from previous stories. Being in the technology field, I did find the authors addition of crypto currency new and enlightening. I could tell Mr. Sullivan did his research on the subject and presented it quite well. This new currency added some complexity to the story. On that note, I would say this story was more high-end than previous ones. Boone and Emily at times were dressed up as we have never seen them before.

As I said earlier, I’m not a fan of authors narrating their own works, yet Mr. Sullivan started narrating other author’s audiobooks prior to becoming an author himself. His voice is clean and clear. He has an ability to apply distinct voices and accents to his plethora of characters, and in my opinion, can pull off a Caribbean accent rather well. There were no noticeable audio artifacts I can recall while listening and the production level was professionally done, a great job as usual. His in-depth understanding of the story’s characters (being the author) help him be expressive and add inflection were needed. If you enjoy solid narration, you will find it in this audiobook.

For parents and younger listeners, note there are a few places where more mature language and situations were presented. Nothing that I would consider excessive, and apart from these few places, I would say the story overall would be enjoyed by a teenager and up. There is some graphic violence, but this story seems tamer than others in the series. If you made it through all the previous books, you understand what you may experience in this one.

In summary, if you are one who likes action, adventure, beautiful locations, and even some diving, I believe you will really enjoy this story. I have found Mr. Sullivan’s writing and narration to be top notch and engaging. I enjoyed the inclusion of some new tech and even the focus of more high-end players in the story. The story had me guessing and the flow was well paced. I recommend you give this audiobook a listen.

This is the 4th book in the the deep diving series. I recommend starting from the beginning so that you’ll understand references to past events, although you could read just this book if you really wanted to.

Boone and Emily are back at it again. Six months after the last book Boone and Emily find themselves in Cozumel, this time running their own dive outfit with the asset they received from the last book.

The first chapter seems like something out of a spy thriller before we check in with Boone and Emily.

Of course it didn’t take long for “Boonem” to be at the wrong price at the wrong time for things to quickly spiral out of control.

As always he does a great job describing the islands and dive sites. I enjoy getting to relive some of the islands I’ve been to, explore some islands I’ve never been to vicariously through them, see what I missed out due to trips canceled from Covid. You can tell the author isn’t fond of cruise ships, throwing shade at them in each book. Again a fun easy read. The first half kinda drags out but picks up again. With these books, you know how they are going to end you know the editing etc but if you’ve already read the first few book you’ll enjoy this one too.

I always enjoy hearing more exciting adventures of Boone and Emily. I love this series! Boone and Emily are dive instructors who always seem to find themselves in a bit of trouble. They never stay in one place in this series, moving from one beautiful dive spot to another throughout the Caribbean. I love hearing the author's detailed knowledge of the area. I even went online and ordered one of the drinks mentioned in the book, Ting. Ting is a Jamaican grapefruit flavored soda. Can't wait to try it and can't wait to hear about the new locations and foods Boone and Emily will see in the next book. Hopefully there will be plenty more to come in this series. Nick Sullivan is one of only a few authors that I love hearing self-narrate their own books. He does an outstanding job and I couldn't imagine anyone else doing this series!

I have one complaint and I will get to that after my positive comments. I have been enjoying learning about scuba diving and islands of the Caribbean. My husband I have been to the ABC islands, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman so it was fun to recall our own memories.

I enjoy reading the "afterwards" comments and appreciate the research that has been done. I am now on the 5th book in the series and have even been paying more money for the books than I usually do on BookBub.

My one complaint is using God's name in curses or Jesus's name as an exclamation. I am grateful that they are kept to a minimum, but I cringe when they occur. It's a compliment to your story lines that I am continuing to read this series because I usually put authors on my do-not-read list who do not recognize that there are Christian readers who are offended.

I am also a huge fan of Clive Cussler.

Deep fun

It took me a little while to read this Emily and Boone adventure/thriller. I liked the combination of scuba, the Caribbean and the challenges our heroes faced. I was even surprised a bit who the villain was.

What was missing was the chemistry between the heroes - they are good friends that flirt … but the flirting never seems to go anywhere. Yet, they describe themselves as boyfriend/girlfriend, live together, but don’t seem exclusive. This part is really my only complaint.

Good story. I’d read more of this series.

Getting Richer by the Book

As an 88 year old non diver, but very avid reader, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the tales that you’ve spun in this fun (and educational) series. As a 26 year military veteran, I was a Serbo-Croatian linguist to an intelligence officer. Interesting duty. Although stationed in Hawaii for four years, I never learned to dive. Hanauma Bay was a wonderful place to snorkel, but one look over the reef into nothingness told me that snorkeling was my limit. However, your books have given me an appreciation of what I’ve missed. Booneemily are my alter egos.

Absolutely love the deep series books

Being a dive master and instructor, I’ve spent time in the places, Nick writes about. Love the stories, just fun to read.
Nick’s discription of Cozumel is very accurate and just adds to the story, for someone that has spent time there.
I recommend these books to all divers and even to people that love to travel the islands.
Nick, love your books, and let’s go diving!

Sullivan's a Master Story Teller!

Just finished this book. My 3rd Sullivan book I read in the last 3 days. I'm throughly addicted to his books. I highly recommend this book. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. A perfect mixture of adventure, thrills, humor, and the ocean. Buy it and read it. You'll be glad you did. I'm ready to read his next book as soon as I finish this review.

I think if you’ve enjoyed the first 3, you won’t be surprised by the way this one opens, runs, and ends. Then again you might. I had no problem, as I thought the plot was rather simple. I wish he’d spent more time with diving and less with the dysfunctional, wealthy family that gets wrapped up with Boonemily. Yet, that subplot was good up to the bitter end. Loved Brix and the introduction of the potlicker hound. I hope you enjoy it.

Intriguing

Loving this series. Another story with Boone and Emily that you can literally 'dive' into! What I love about reading is the amazing visuals that an author creates in your mind of a place that you have never seen. Mr Sullivan is a word master, creating that amazing imagery, intrigue and adventure to his books.

For me the devil in this book is the cruise ship dumping waste. It might be something else for you...

Terrific read

Reading this book was like escaping to a world before this silly flu everyone is panicking about. It started out not unlike other books in the E&B series, diving and recreation, then spun into danger, and survival, and suspense and ended with a great twist. Great get away.

Love the series

Great characters, great locations. As a scuba diver who has been to all four of the locations in all four books of the series, I really enjoy Sullivan’s descriptions of the islands and the diving. Are the plots a little over the top? Sure, but they’re a lot of fun. One complaint — I wish that there were more than four books in the series.

This is a throughly entertaining story. I loved seeing the uber rich side of boating. Funny how they have problems just like regular people. Boone and Emily are still delightful and going strong! I absolutely loved the afterword in these books. Telling me what is real, what isnt and how the idea came to be. Plus the new boat name? Awesome!

What a life

Sun, sea and adventure, what more could you ask for. Another fun installment in the enviable lives of Boonemily. My only grievance is that now I will have to wait for the next book to be completed before I can continue reading.

Sibling Rivalry

Exciting and intriguing, although it does have an exciting “gotcha” at the end. How could anyone not enjoy a book that has sea life, dogs, life saving rescues, Greek Billionaires, and male primogeniture within its covers???

This is a fun series to read, action packed by easy to read. I have read the series out of order and each plot does stand on it's own. There are references to earlier adventures but they don't impact the current story and are not too much of a distraction.
