Cort “Sick Heart” Van Breda is lethal with his hands. As an underground fighter, there are few rules where he lives and that is where he meets Anya Bokori. A prize for winning his latest fight...a fight he should of lost. What will happen when fates change course for these two unique souls? This is hard to review without spoilers but I will say it has a futuristic, almost “apocalyptic” underground fighting world feel to it with the rules and rituals that happen within. “When you li

Sick Heart was a constant battle between love and hate. It has been ages since a book has left me so conflicted about not only the story but the characters. Cort and Anya were a force there is no doubt in my mind about that but if you pick up this book thinking that you are going to get your perfect little happily ever after, think again. What these characters had to do to get their ending was nothing short of tragic, especially for the children. That about sums it up for me, if you are going to ...more

SICK HEART by JA Huss is a contemporary, adult, dark, romance stand alone set in the author’s work of Rook and Ronin, and The Company. This is twenty-seven year old, underground MMA fighter Cort van Breda aka Sick Heart, and Anya’s story line. SICK HEART is a stand alone but as yet, has no direct connection to the other series.

WARNING: Due to the graphic nature and content of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Cort a

This is one of those books where it’s easier to read it than it is for me to summarize it. This author is queen of the unexpected, unique story lines, and all around plot twists. Well done

My head hurts
My soul hurts
My heart hurts, I'm heart sick.

There's so many bad things done to babies, toddlers and children that made me so sad.

That little relief in the end was not enough!

I am not sure where to start. I loved Sick Heart by JA Huss, but do not want to give too much away. This is an original story, but this is true for everything this author writes. It was emotional, dark, and completely captivating. Cort is an underground fighter where he literally fights for his life. Anya is part of that dark world. They are both broken and lost and will steal your heart. What they have been through is unimaginable. Even so, their journey does have hope and I devoured

Sick Heart is a well written, fast-paced, action-packed, dark, emotional romance read with a unique storyline that will grab you hook, line and sinker from the very beginning. Secrets, violence, suspense, plot twists, and sexy scenes will keep you turning the pages in this MMA romance story.

I volunteered to review an advance reader copy of this book.
The beginning dragged me in. This does have a feel of a dystopian/apocalyptical genre built in. Majority of this story, real life scenarios are happening, but I do see a bit of the "fantasy" slightly pulled in. Cort and Anya's story is graphic, dark, brutal, but they have to drag themselves through the mud to get their HEA. I would suggest going in blind as there were a lot of surprises for me. I can't wait what's next.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased re

Sick Heart is the latest release from JA Huss. My first thought after “The End” was what a beautiful story this is.

Cort van Breada is an MMA fighter in a league where the ultimate prize is your life until the next fight. The fighters begin training at a young age; knowing early on that their tournament fights are to the death. Cort has been around the league for a long time, and he is still alive. That alone is a feat few have achieved. He just needs to win one more fight to buy his way out

This is not a romance. I wouldn't even call it a dark romance.

There is barely any romance or "couples time" in this book. When there are sex scenes, it's with her, the hero, and the hero's best friends. They have sex alone a few times.

The focus of the book is on her past and his past and the little kids who are stuck in the death camps training to die or survive in the their next fight.

Was it a dream? Was it a nightmare? Whatever it is, the time I spent in the pages of Sick Heart by J.A. Huss was more real that anything I have read in a while. She pushed me deep into this twisted, beyond dark and soul shattering world. Complicated doesn't even begin to cover the depth and brilliance of this story. I am shocked. I am dazed. I am struggling with the waves of raw and gritty feels.

J.A.Huss always writes the most unexpected stories. Her mind works on another level. I am always left

I was blown away by Julie's latest release! Sick Heart has all those great elements of the Huss books we know and love as well as layers of emotion and vulnerability. Find a comfy chair and call out sick because you won't want to put this book down!

I picked up Sick Heart with a little trepidation when I read author J.A. Huss’ description that the book was a dark romance featuring a MMA fighter, but I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Despite the dark scenes in a tragic story setting, there

I was immediately pulled into this story.
The characters “got to me” right away.. I was instantly intrigued. Then, I was emotionally invested.
It’s a very interesting storyline. It has a really unique vibe.
It is gritty, suspenseful, heartbreaking and deeply emotional.
AND- a reminder of the strength of the human spirit. The desire to survive. It hit a lot of emotions for me.
There’s a lot of “unpleasant “ things happening. And, what I mean is that there are seriously depraved and morally

J.A. Huss is a master at writing twisted stories that blow your mind. This was on another level. Sick Heart takes us on a twisted journey that grabs ahold of you and doesn't let go until the end. There are so many aspects and layers to this story and I was hooked, intrigued. It is violent, action-packed, disturbing (at times) suspenseful, heartbreakingly beautiful, gritty, raw, beautiful, and so freaking hot! But there is also has a soft, romantic, and inspirational side to it which is such a co ...more

Gahhh! The twist! Loved it. I really enjoyed this book. The characters were super intense and I devoured their stories. I had to know what happened to them. This book is set in a different type of world. One that’s sick twisted and to be honest a total nightmare. The book wasn’t meant to be a romance in my opinion. It was meant to bring light to a situation that’s happening all over the world. Huss nailed that part of it. Definitely a good read. Not for t

Wow!....just WOW! What an incredible book! I have been knocked sideways by it. Its intensity; its richness of plot and detail; its tension and depiction of cruelty, helplessness, vulnerability
and the spirit to survive, to overcome, to become a warrior and to live and love unconditionally and unapologetically. From the first to the last, this book has had me in the palm of its hand and has kept me completely enthralled.
I really don't know how to describe the impact this story has had as I have

This fictional world of MMA fighting, oil rigs, the underworld of owners, enslaved women, and all the intricate parts are scary. It's a sick and intense world that shutter to think what if this was more then just J.A. Huss' crazy imagination. This author always has a way of sucking you into worlds of conspiracies, companies and evil people behind the scenes running everyone's minds and lives and we as readers love it and devour every word she writes. ...more

Julie has done it again. She has created another messed up world. So many disturbing things happen - little kids fighting to death, while others are slaves. Cort and Anya have found ways to survive in this world, but can they still survive after meeting each other?

This is more than just a romance.... read it and get swept up like I did.

I'm not even sure what to say. I have loved the books JA Huss has written, so I often just pre-order and rarely read the synopsis. So I went into this blind, thinking it would be more mainstream MMA. But no, this is set in a sick, evil part of society (some part of The Company? It doesn't get a mention, but it would fit with their twisted way of world). The fighters fight to the death. No rules. Cort/Sick Heart has won every fight he's been in - he's made it to 27yrs old, and has one last fight ...more

I don't know where to begin

I am a person who most often purchases a book by it's cover and often after reading an excerpt. I have read books by this author before and thoroughly enjoyed them, for some reason I initially had a difficult time getting into this book. I'm not sure why because in the end I thoroughly this book. I like my books to be on the "dark side", I like books that tend to push the limits of what most are comfortable with, I like books that incorporate real world problems, and I

I tried to think of a title to this review that would truly describe what I felt about this book, boy was that excruciating. This book was sooooo much to describe in one word. First of all yes there is a major trigger warning for those that can’t even stand to mention child/sex trafficking and abuse. Although I will say that thankfully Huss does not go into any explicit details of the actual acts.. just mostly mentioned the words and acknowledges that they are victims of the abuse. Sh

JA Huss is one of my top five authors. She shoots up to the top after every book of hers that I read. This one is no exception.

This was a hard read. It took longer because my heart strings were pulled. I teared up, cringed, smiled, laughed, and wanted to throw up all throughout this book. But I was totally pulled in. It's a story I won't forget. The twists and turns are captivating, especially that last one. MY HEART! I was totally freaking out! Huss's descriptions made me feel like

Couldn't put this down.

So, I honestly swithered so much about reading this book. The whole idea of MMA based as a backdrop for the plot put me off, I just didn't think I'd connect with it. I had it on my to read list after reading Bully King and the Ruling classes. So I did really like the author. Anyway about 3pm yesterday I did download it and I honestly was so capitaved by the plot. It was such an amazingly well written book. I was totally engrossed in the story between Anya and Cont the rig

I always know that I'm going to go on a journey when I read something from this author. Her stories are intense and make me realize that I don't live in a fairy tale. There are always elements of truth to the backstory and this book was no different. Anya and Colts story as brutal as it was was still powerful. They truly were survivors. I think that's what drew me to the story. They survived and overcame. They were the same but different.

The ending felt a bit rushed to me with how every
