They call me the Angel of Noc City, but it's all a lie. The cameras see what they want to see as my father spins half truths and dangerous propaganda.
Darklings are dangerous. Monstrous. Unholy. They're a threat to humans everywhere, and they need to be destroyed, despite the decades of peace.
But what happens when Noc City’s poster girl discovers she's one of the monsters they fear? I can tell you what happens.
Chaos. Fear. War.
I thought death was my only way out. Sweet, dark oblivion. But I was wrong. The way out might just be through a room of chains, blood, and cravings…of sex, pain, and betrayal. My way out of this hell might rest in the hands of the most dangerous creatures Noc City’s ever known.
This is a DARK reverse harem book. There's a LOT of blood, sex, MM, and swears, not to mention references to suicide, abuse, and trauma. This is your fair warning, so if you say you like dark romance...please understand that this is a DARK ROMANCE.
I spend 95% of my life huddled in my little office, at my little desk, vividly hallucinating about characters and scenarios that don't exist. Then I write it all down for you to enjoy!
I ate this book up in like 6 hours. It was so flipping entertaining.
Merrick, Faust, Atlas, and August? Yummy. I can get behind this RH 😏.
Serenity was such a badass strong woman. I loved how even though she struggled mentally she wasn’t portrayed as weak. This touched on suicidal thoughts and depression pretty well, it was very relatable.
The story was interesting from beginning to end, and now I’m immediately reading the next because of that bomb-ass cliffy!
How in the world does this have so many 5 star reviews?! I never leave reviews but I've never read a book that has pissed me off quite like this one did. I get that this is supposed to be a "dark" book but that's no excuse for how annoying and infuriating these main characters are. The bi- erasure (which I'm seeing more and more of in the RH genre) was insulting and the way these men (who are the romantic interests) treated a victim of abuse was upsetting. I pushed through to the end to see if there was any redemption and found none.
This was cute. I didn't really like the male characters, heck I don't even think I liked the heroine. I wanted more from her especially since she had the power to channel her inner beast and at least wreck some havoc, instead she was always there just letting anything happen to her. Got tired of it quickly.
I was able to finish it and the second book so I'm curious to see if she eventually gets a back bone in the next book.
While the last chapter was the most interesting in the entire book, it didn't account for how much filler the rest of the book contained. I literally skimmed/skipped entire chapters and didn't miss anything. I understand the need to "set the scene" and give us a background for our characters, but it shouldn't take THAT many pages.
General gist (contains spoilers):
--Rating - 2 stars - lots of filler, I started reading only the dialogue parts and even those were boring at times. --Steam - 2 stars - there's a few scenes, and while they are spicy, they are very short and very spread out. Definitely not the pull or focus of the book. --Storyline - 4 stars - very cool storyline. I like vampire/werewolf/witch type stuff, but I have to admit...I need a little steam to go along with my stories, and this just didn't cut it. --Plot Twists - 2 stars - nothing unforeseen --Emotional Pull - 0 stars - nuff said --Writing - 2 stars - sooooo much filler, unnecessary background stuff, too much inner dialogue, and even the parts that I was interested in kept slipping me up while reading...just in general, the story could've been accomplished in a lot less words. --Denouement - 0 stars - bc it's the first book and nothing has been resolved yet --Cliffhanger? - Yes --HEA? - N/A
*Also, if you jumped into this series bc you are a fan of reverse harem, this series will be a disappointment. The entirety of the series is spent spotlighting the individual relationships of the characters (well, some not really even being relationships)....alllllll the way up until the last 10% of the third/last book. So, if the reverse harem aspect is what you were craving, this isn't the book for you.
Paranormal RH with characters you can't help but fall for.
Great storyline. Phenomenal characters. Excellent attention to details. Perfect pacing.
Love the twist on supernatural lore that this is based on. Love the whole premise of the book, even the whole kidnap situation cus - yeah, I like it dark.
Serenity is a halfling daughter of a prominent senator and after her brothers brutal death is awakened when she ends up with a month full of blood.
This girl goes through so much from her boyfriend and then her father who really isn't. She ends up kidnapped, meant to be used against the senator, but that doesn't work out.
Her abductors realize she's their best hope at getting their demands met, but they have to work together.
She ends up with some smoking chemistry with them.
I'm in love with this story. It's has it all. Definitely recommend this to fans of paranormal romance.
August - wolf alpha, mate Bastian - warlock with the French accent Atlas - Head of Nocturne vampire coven, r'ship with Faust Faust - the surly, damaged, feral vampire, r'ship with Atlas Merrick - sexy vampire with so much heart
While I did find many parts of this predictable I did enjoy this book overall. It was a crazy mix of supernaturals and politics that I did not see coming. For most of the book the heroine is kidnapped so in some ways this makes the book feel short and is if not much is achieved. The heroine figures out the situation she’s in (eventually) and even sheds her deepest secrets to no avail. I enjoyed her character but she didn’t evolve as much as I’d have liked. Often times Serenity lacked any fight in her which I could understand if she wasn’t hiding a secret that could protect and save her. I don’t get this complacency about her character at all yet but I’m thinking it may have something to do with her brother. By the end I was still kind of hoping and waiting for her inner badass to come out, maybe it will in the next book? My hope is now that she’ll finally have the support she needs to remove herself from her fathers clutches that she’ll take him on bring him down. Not to mention before shit this the fond she finds out she has an even bigger reason to help the guys in order to save her family. I wish the end had been more impactful or surprising but I think there were too many hints dropped (even subtly) that just made it too obvious where things were headed. A few editing mishaps gave me pause but nothing that really bothered me enjoying this. I’m hoping the heroine will stop being a walking book stereotype, completely dim witted when a hot guy is even in the vicinity. I’m all for woman owning their bodies but I really did want to smack her a time or two when she had the puberty levels of a 13 year old boy. As for the relationship aspect I’m thinking Serenity will end up with a harem of 4 but time will tell. I think this writer writes some crazy shit and I’m always here for that. Note this will certainly not be for all so keep that in mind. The book deals with some heavy shit but I wouldn’t really say the book overall romance is dark, rather think more along the lines of horny vampires with a passion for blood. Some of the topics in the book though can be rather dark for some as it alludes to kidnapping, assault, sexual assault and experimentation as well as many mentions of suicide.
There’s a lot to like here: smart twists in the classic paranormal tropes, hot, broody guys, and a war between humans and non-humans that ups the stakes. The book is well written and although there are a few typos, they were not too distracting. But the heroine has a magic, ahem, box. All the hot guys find her irresistible. She doesn’t have much else going for her - she’s a victim but it’s not her fault (never is, poor thing). She has no particular skills or smarts. She makes poor choices and puts others at risk. But she’s beautiful and has a magic box, so it’s all okay, right? I find this sort of heroine wholly unlikeable and even if she claims her power and becomes a “queen” in later books, I’m not engaged enough to read on.
Damn this book exceeded my expectations (well... technically I went in with zero expectations)!
Trigger warnings - talk about suicide, suicide attempt, blood shed
So I didn't even realise that this was a supernatural series. I did see the term "darklings" in the blurb, but I'm not too familiar with supernatural terms and I completely skipped the tags stating how much of a supernatural series this actually is!
The story opens with Serenity, a dhampir (half human half vampire), in the city of Noc, ruled by her father, a role model for the humans and a nightmare behind closed doors. She lost her brother in an unidentified terrorist attack a year ago and soon after its found out that she isn't a human, leading to pain and suffering for both her mom and herself at the hands of her father, who is angered by her mother's infidelity. Noc city has agreed for humans to coexist with supernaturals, but humans being humans, want the position of superiority, with Serenity's father as the leading forefront in their madness for power. Soon enough she finds herself in the midst of a war between the humans and the supernaturals..and struggles to understand her full capacity as a damphir.
I loved the build up so far! The guys were pretty amazing..I mean sure it's just the first book but damn, I'm enjoying everything so far! The sudden inclusion of the certain someone in the ending was pretty cool. I was hoping to see the book end the way it did and I wasn't disappointed!
Pick this one for a slightly darker read (nothing hardcore so far, but pay heed to the trigger warnings!)
This is my first book by Penn Cassidy, and definitely won't be the last!
It's been quite awhile since I've read vampire books, and I didn't realise I was missing it until I opened this book.
It captured me from the very start, and was dark enough (and bloody enough) to keep me happily turning the pages, neglecting everything else around me.
It's dark. It's bloody. It's hot AF. And I can't wait to read more.
First and foremost, I'm not a fan of reverse harems. That being said, the storyline was still pretty decent. The spicy scenes were also pretty well written. Overall though, the writing was immature. For all I know, it could have been written by an excited 16 year old. The love interests were under developed, which we could pass off as being that there weren't that many pages. Serenity read like an 18 year old heroine thinking she was an adult. Is that intentional to show how sheltered she was, or just a really young author's doing? Moving on from the writing aspects of it. The world building had phenomenal potential. It was really the only reason I kept reading. So overall, not my taste, but kind of worth reading.
I took a bit too long to write a review for this so I honestly can’t remember much of it now which kind of says a lot about the book in itself I’d say. There wasn’t much plot and the main character Serenity isn’t super likable, but I am trying to get through the second book. It was a fun short read though.
Interesting start. I'm irritated with the way that the Hs great Serenity, though. They need to.improve on that. I'm looking forward to seeing her stand up for herself even more, too.
Noc City is the first book in Noc City series. It tells the story of a place where humans and supernaturals co-exist, but civil wars between the races have dire consequences. We follow Serenity, a young woman daughter of Noc City's most important anti-darkling politician that discovers she isn't totally human after all, and suffering greatly at the hands of both sides, humans and supernaturals. It is told by multiple PoVs.
I really liked this book, even if it's not entirely perfect. Serenity has flaws that some readers will probably be bothered by, but I understood her reasons not to fight for herself. When the people you love and trust the most lie, backstab and abuse you, sometimes something inside you might break, and it's difficult to dig yourself out of that deep hole. I sympathise with her, and was glad to see that she discovers a small fire within herself during the book.
So far we have four potential love interests for her, four strong, old and powerful supernaturals that find themselves enthralled by the hybrid girl. Three of them are vampires, and they are essentialy assholes to the FMC at first. They want something from her, and go to great lengths to get it, even knowing the abuse she suffered. This might make it hard for people to connect with the male characters, but at the end of the day they are in the middle of a war and their choices are perceived as sacrifices for the greater good. The fourth guy only appears late in the story, so we don't get to know a lot about him as of yet.
Overall, a nice surprise that I'll definitely continue reading. It isn't nearly as dark as it could be, but it does leave a nice taste of blood in the reader's mouth. Looking forward to see where it goes.
Literally had to pry my eyes off while also trying to convince my eyelids to stay open so I can accomplish reading the entire thing. I had just downloaded it an hour and a half ago....
But when I glanced at the clock..... 530AM. Ooops.
Lol, that statement alone should tell ya exactly what I think already. This book has got thrill to it, I think I’ve come to a conclusion that the RH category is just that, thrilling. Leaves you wanting more 🤤
Serenity lives in a world with vamps, Jacob's, and our boring human race(boo). I imagine she lived an okay life up until the death of her brother(rip) and not so daddy dearest becoming her tormentor. It seems like a cliché storyline, but the author obviously did a fantastic job adding her own style to it and it worked out really well. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, I kept telling sleep to fuck off so I could finish this treasure but, I am only human(boo), a weakness but sleep is a must. I highly recommend adding this to your library, I mean there’s hawt sex, abuse(if you're a little biatch who can’t handle the make believe, bless your heart. You don’t know what you’re missing out on LOL), and the story is legit captivating.
Onto book #2 for me. Kudos to you, Penn Cassidy! 🥰 A series added to my favorites, I'm sure of it.
*Edit I got too excited, looks like I’ll be moving onto book 2 in two months 😳
A bit meh really! I don't understand when authors say something is dark... But then it's about as vanilla as they come but with some abuse thrown in. The only thing that made this dark was the whole vampire, drink blood shtick and the love interests being dicks to the protagonist over her abuse at the hands of her father.
The love interests were just soft boys, not even remotely frightening or intimidating. Also how can super-old vampires who are supposed to be powerful/intelligent also be so dumb and clueless. Or does the author genuinely think people are so dumb they can't pick up on her extremely obvious hints?
Look, I finished the book so it can't have been that bad but I won't be reading any more in this series. I did just want to give the MC a hug and make her some soup so I suppose that shows she was compelling in some way.
Conclusion, this books isn't all that dark and the love interests and super bland and pathetic.
Noc City is where vampires, shifters, witches and humans live in an uneasy peace. Daughter of a bigoted senator, Serenity hides dark secrets that are forced into the open when she is kidnapped. There is a lot of violence, sex and blood. One suicide attempt, but it isn't gratuitous and a great cast of characters. Faust in particular deserves a mention because he's needing a kick and some redemption
I was new to Penn Cassidy and her work. And, omgah let me tell you book one was captivating. It sucked me in from the start. This story has a mix of creatures. So far vampires and wolf have started book of the trilogy. Penn puts her own style in creating her version for such creatures say example halfbreeds, vamp and human. I love her take on vampires and half bloods. I can't wait to dive in to book two! This book has taken away by book hangover!
Another shifter book that I loved. This one is a slow burn but completely worth it. I really hope to see the growth of Serenity in book 2. Hot Vampires and Wolves 😍 totally here for it.
⭐️⭐️/5 Stars This is book 1 of the Noc City series and unfortunately for me it will be my last. I felt like I was missing a lot of essential world-building information. Most of the time I tried and failed to get invested in the characters. I blame that on a lack of foundation. I found Serenity very immature and many of her actions were far outside the norms of the character the author portrayed her to be. As the Angel of Noc City her nighttime choices had significant repercussions, but she would have known that. That knowledge did not stop her from allowing, no encouraging, the paparazzi to photograph her activities the night of her little rebellion at the vampire club. These are the kind of details that can make or break a reading experience for me. I know I read fiction but it still needs to written in a way I can believe it. Let the reality fall away.
This just wasn't that for me. It wasn't bad and I believe that Penn Cassidy could write other great things. It had some spice but even that felt forced.
I accidentally left this review on book 3 instead of book 1 and I think it’d be more helpful here so I’m copying and pasting lol

So I was stuck in a reading rut. I was literally talking to a friend about my woes and she was sending me suggestions, but I swear I’d read them all!!
All I wanted was a book with a bada** female character that ALSO had a good story line. Is that too much to ask for?!?
Enter Noc City.
I went into this book about 99% blind. It’d been on a specific TBR list for a while; I remember finding it the last time I went down the “let’s download 8000 samples rabbit hole” so I knew it had a little darker and grunge feel to it, but that was about it. The cover is what did it for me tho. It just has that vibe that screams ‘kicka**’ so I one clicked it and..
OH MY LORDDDDD
I read it all in 3 days. I got everything I wanted +MORE.
The development and growth this story has from beginning to end is phenomenal!!! Truly.
You get: Vampires Shifters Witches Hot hot romance Mystery Plot twists!!! Insta love Friends to lovers Enemies to lovers Family drama Political drama
I mean I could have stopped a long time ago and it should still convince you to read this series!!!!!
I wish I could read it for the first time all over again!! & I can’t wait for the spin off!!! One person found this helpful
I never read a vampire book unless it’s JLA ( you know how it is) because I watched vampire diaries and didn’t want anything that would mess with my lovely show. Anyways I decided to gave this one a try and it’s really good. Despite the whole one star reviews which surprises me considering the plot I went on with it. I really liked Noc city. It’s kinda something new and there is not one but many heroes in this book. Yeah you guessed that right this is a reverse harem but it all starts in the second book in the series. It’s a short read but covers a lot. Can’t say world building but the plot is doing just fine. I didn’t like any of the characters except the heroine.
I didn't read too much into the blurb before I started this, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out this is a PNR dark romance. The secrets that are being kept have the power to ensue chaos and poor Serenity seems to be at the root. She has been beaten, bloodied, and broken several times over. All she wants is the pain to go away and feel nothing. This book is unlike anything I have ever read before, and even though PNR is not my usual go to, I am certainly hooked on this series.
This book had me hooked, I finished it in less than 12 hours. I had it in my kindle for weeks after stumbling across it and deciding it might make a interesting read between other book releases. I really enjoyed this though. Some parts were a bit predictable but it didn’t detract from the story. Overall I was entertained and I will be reading the rest in the series.
