SECRET ORIGINS REVEALED.
For the first time ever, discover true stories of two of the most popular Power Rangers characters ever - the deadly assassin known as Andromeda and the mysterious hero bearing the name Phantom Ranger.
The shocking revelations about their pasts will forever change the futures of the Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers teams in ways no one ever imagined.
The superstar team of L.L. McKinney (A Blade So Black), Frank Gogol, and Simone Ragazzoni (Power Rangers: Drakkon New Dawn) reveal the secrets that no Power Rangers can afford to miss.
Collects Power Rangers Unlimited: Heir to Darkness #1 and Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of Darkness #1.
Two very good stories focusing on already established PR lore and new PR characters created for this run. Really would love more on the Phantom Ranger in this, but I’m sure more will come as I continue reading!
This collection contains the Heir To Darkness and Edge Of Darkness one-shots - the former focusing on Astronema, and the latter on the Phantom Ranger.
The Astronema issue is excellent, showing a different side to the character. She was one of the better villains in the original Power Rangers, and while this origin is a bit different to what we remember, it highlights her relationships with Dark Specter, Ecliptor, and even Divatox in ways that the show could only ever wish it could.
The Phantom Ranger one-shot is less impressive, promising answers about the illusive character and not really delivering on any of them. Unlike Astronema, he's one of the characters I hated in the original run (because he just doesn't do anything - he turns up, ponces about for six episodes, then leaves!), and this issue doesn't really do much to change that.
Half great, half not so, but still worth checking out. Just don't go into the Phantom Ranger issue expecting any kind of resolution.
Being unfamiliar with the Power Rangers comics, this collection threw me off a little at the beginning because I thought it was a two-part story and not two separate one-shots, something I could have easily solved by reading the blurb instead of diving right into the comic. HOWEVER... allowing each story to stand on its own, I much preferred Astronema's one-shot because it gave you a story within a story by exploring her past and what brought her to being the Dark Specter. I feel like I would have needed more backstory to fully appreciate the Phantom Ranger's story but the nod to who a character could have become was a nice twist that I did enjoy. Absolutely will go back and read the Heir to Darkness arc.
If love comic books but haven't picked up the Boom Power Ranger series, you should fix that. This volume includes two stories--The first is Astronema's training to defeat the power rangers and the second covers Phantom Ranger trying to protect a young Rita from her father. Both stories are excellently written and have amazing artwork.
This was a great series of stories that added a lot of background to the lore of Power Rangers. I loved getting more of Astronama's childhood and training. Getting to know more about the Phantom Ranger was cool too. Great addition overall.
I don't know how to start this review, but let me just say that this collection(?) was fantastic.
I'm not much of a comic book reader, but Power Rangers is like my favorite fandom, so I've been reading what I can get my hands on. So far, this is the fourth comic collection that I've read. The Time Force one was disappointing to me, so I was apprehensive coming in. I was happy to be proven wrong.
There are two stories in this book. The first is about Kay (eventually Astronema) and her mentor Ecliptor. Their dynamic was my favorite during the In Space season, and it was captured well in this comic. I loved seeing the parallels in their characters. I loved how their thoughts and feelings mirrored each others to show that Kay is his surrogate daughter, despite being raised in such a harsh environment.
Kay's rival was really cool as well. I won't spoil what happens with her rival, but the twist was awesome and I didn't see it coming. There's also a slow revelation that occurs within this story about what happens to Kay's trainee group. This book doesn't pull it's punches to showcase how bad the Empire is. I loved it. So often in the show the villains have to be softened because it's a kid's show first. These comics don't have to cater to that demographic so they can be edgier.
The second story was about the Phantom Ranger and his mission to save a little girl and her mother. The Turbo season is one that I haven't watched yet, so I knew little about the Phantom Ranger going in. This book was a great first impression because what a guy! He's so heroic and honorable. No wonder Cassie has the hots for him. I really don't want into spoilers for his story, because I enjoyed it so much especially going in blind. Let's just say I loved it so much I want his action figure now.
This was a much better set of stories than the Time Force one. I'm very happy and I picked it up and highly recommend.
