Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair, popularly known as M. T., was an Indian author, screenplay writer and film director. He was a prolific and versatile writer in modern Malayalam literature, and was one of the masters of post-Independence Indian literature. Randamoozham, which retells the story of the Mahabharata from the point of view of Bhimasena, is widely credited as his masterpiece.
At the age of 20, as a chemistry undergraduate, he won the prize for the best short story in Malayalam for Valarthumrigangal at World Short Story Competition jointly conducted by New York Herald Tribune, Hindustan Times, and Mathrubhumi. His first major novel, Naalukettu (The Legacy), written at the age of 23, won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958. His other novels include Manju (Mist), Kaalam (Time), Asuravithu (The Demon Seed), and Randamoozham (The Second Turn). The emotional experiences of his early days went into his novels, and most of his works are oriented towards the basic Malayalam family structure and culture. His three novels set in traditional tharavads in Kerala are Naalukettu, Asuravithu, and Kaalam.
Nair was a screenwriter and director of Malayalam films. He directed seven films and wrote the screenplay for around 54 films. He won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times, for: Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992), and Parinayam (1994), which is the most by anyone in the screenplay category. In 1995 he was awarded the highest literary award in India, Jnanpith, for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature. In 2005, India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, was awarded to him.

M.T. tells us the story of an old Nair family and the problems associated with the matrilineal system in Kerala. The story is set in a beautiful Valluvanadan village. M.T. tells the story through his protagonist Sethu. This novel was first published in 1969. We can easily connect with all the struggles that Sethu had to face in his life due to M.T's extraordinary narration. This is one of my favorite novels written by my M.T.

Book Set against the backdrop of a crumbling matrilineal ''tarawad'' system of the Nairs in Kerala with its petty rivalries and jealousies, its sambandhan system of contractual marriage, its conflicts and problems, and the changes in land legislation which sharply erode the feudal order.
Kaalam is the story of sethumadhavan Nair who starts out as an ambitious and confident adolescent - but in his journey towards adulthood, where material and social success go hand in hand, he is faced with an overwhelming sense of disillusionment. The river of Sethu's village, a mute witness to every crisis in his life, mirrors this journey, its sensuous beauty transformed to dry sand. MT’s lyrical prose captures the changing moods and seasons of the landscape of his own childhood in a novel that, though not strictly autobiographical, shares some of the emotional experiences of the protagonist. In a finesse characteristic of Nair's profound, yet minimalist sense of expression, the starkness of reality found in this story is touching and insightful.

What sets legendary writer MT Vasudevan Nair apart? I would say it’s his stories that stand the test of time. Stories that speak of heartbreaks, passions, despair, and all those feelings that connects all of us.
In “Kaalam” (Time), MT’s Sahitya Akademi Award winning novel, we first meet Sethu, the protagonist, as an adolescent who brims with dreams and hopes about his future. He lives in a joint family in his ancestral home, which has seen better days. His academic excellence prompts him to leave his home for further studies and we follow Sethu’s growth into adulthood, witnessing the many changes and experiences he goes through in time.
There are so many things to write about in this book. The crumbling ‘tharawad’ or ancestral home that stands as a testament to the changes in society as modernity creeps in, sweeping young men like Sethu off to cities in search of better jobs and more money.
Sethu is like the Everyman of the time – a youngster caught in the economic and social transformation that Kerala was going through. He cringes at his family’s poverty-stricken state, flinches with embarrassment when his friends come home. And every time his resolve to acquire an affluent, comfortable life strengthens but, like many others, faces innumerable barriers and struggles.
And like others he searches for love. There are 3 women who influence Sethu’s life – Sumitra, Thankamani, and Lalitha – in each of his significant phases. He gets involved with Sumitra before he leaves for college. But after he reaches the city and joins college he gets drawn towards Thankamani. And later he is infatuated with Lalitha, his boss’ wife.
Sethu’s mind drifts, just like his life, as he tries to find a footing in the world with a stable job, a girl, an identity. He wanders, carried along on the river of time. Just like the river back home in his village, he has his ebbs and flows, his winding paths.
MT’s brilliance shines in many ways – be it the quiet descriptions of Sethu’s picturesque village or the sharp pinpoints of loneliness and frustration that he goes through – and is preserved beautifully in Gita Krishnankutty’s translation.
A must read.

Being the first book, I've read by iconic Malayalam writer M.T Vasudevan Nair, I wish I had, had the chance to read this book in Malayalam.
But being in El Salvador, where let alone Malayalam books, but also English ones being scarce to come by, I had to settle for the eBook version.
The book has suffered due to its conversion into this format - with typos galore. The translation is a little stilted as well.
But I still ploughed through, devouring the story of Sethu - a young boy in a joint family that follows the matriarchal system as was tradition in Kerala. He loves and dreams and studies and falls in and out of love. He matures and falters and makes mistakes and drifts through life as do the others around him like his first crush, his family, his first love, his employers and later his wife.
Like the river in his village, ebbing and flowing, sluggish at times and fast-flowing at others, Sethu meanders through his life not really achieving much and wondering whether the worst is yet to come or already behind him.
A short read rooted in stark reality.
I"d recommend reading it in Malayalam though, to enjoy the book better.

Let’s just cut to the chase shall we? This book left me depressed :( I think it was the wrong choice right after reading The God of Small Things, which is no picnic in the park either, although written in an interesting style. This one is just too languid and relentlessly oppressive. The characters seem doomed and exhibit an apathy towards battling and/or bettering their circumstances that is appalling. I can accept a couple of losers in a book – but a whole novel populated by them can get really dull and boring. Since you know nothing’s going to change because no one is interested, you begin to wonder why you should be!
This book is by renowned Malyali author M.T. Vasudevan Nair (for which he won the Kendriya Sahitya Akademi Award), and he obviously knows his subject inside out – a joint matriarchal Nair family in an obscure village in Kerala, poor, defeated and apathetic except when it comes to petty gossip. The story tells Sethu’s story from his perspective of life in such a household – where the women run everything, where his father is absent, where poverty is omnipotent, and a young teenager like himself can find no relief, no escape. He amuses himself with what little he has – mostly for a while – with the girl next door. But Sethu is no lovable teen, not someone who evokes sympathy. He is shallow, selfish and callous and although that can be explained to a large extent by his circumstances and lack of familial support, it is his choices at crucial junctures that disappoint; choices made when he should have known better. Money is scarce and jobs even more so, but while his friends and colleagues show a willingness to rise above circumstance, Sethu’s defeatist attitude and self-pity just irritated and frustrated me. He’s not a character I can feel sorry for and when in the end Sumitra tells him exactly what he is – I was screaming with relief and joy that someone finally did!
There’s a reason the joint-family system fell apart eventually – the petty jealousies, the interference, the burden of a thousand expectations, the fact that the needs of the family as a whole were always more important than the needs of its individual members, the gossip, poverty and resistance to change – none of these make for a fulfilling family life. The characters in the story are well etched – they’re just not very likable is all. Except for the three women that are involved with Sethu at different times in his life – nobody shows much spunk, least of all Sethu! They were my favourite characters! This is a translation from the original Malyalam and I get the feeling yet again that I’m missing out on something crucial, from not being able to read the original. It will be a while before I read a translation again.
Maybe my disappointment with this book is because yet again, an award winner fails to excite me! Or maybe it’s just a question of timing where I needed an uplifting story, not one where the journey seems futile and lessons stay unlearned. Or maybe it’s just too much of Kerala for this hapless Goan ;) I confess that towards the end, the narrative did hold more interest especially when Sethu appeared to finally be gearing up for a righteous confrontation. However Nair downplays the actual confrontation with his staid narrative style, which robs much of the joy of victory. As in many stories set in Kerala – there is a river! I guess the flow of water and the passage of time are so conducive to comparisons, that authors cannot resist the temptation of that particular metaphor! Nair doesn’t either. Although there are a few instances in the narrative when he is clever and sharp, using irony with great effect, the overall tempo and flow is a little sluggish for me, although I accept apt for the story being told. I think the best lines for me were the final lines in the book,
“The river, his river, dreaming of floods even as it grew dry, lay behind him like a lifeless body drained of blood and movement.”
A great line, but such a depressing thought! Although I tried to imagine that Nair is telling us that the worst is behind Sethu...I just can’t bring myself to believe that’s true. Nothing happens throughout the story to suggest a change in Sethu’s attitude or approach. He is still as self-pitiful and selfish as ever. Always dreaming, never doing! A weak character is our Mr. Sethu and I don’t have patience for the likes of him. I would love to hear if any of you out there have read this in the original Malyalam? Would be interesting to compare notes! I quite liked the cover on my copy though – a painting by one of India’s foremost artists Anjolie Ela Menon entitled Shapurjat.
For me a disappointing read and rather anti-climatic after a great run of books in the past few weeks. I truly think this is a great time to take a break for reading the List – too much reading ‘outside the box’ has left me jaded I think :P Time for Ms. Christie – YES! A return to their roots never hurt a soul ;) Murder on the Orient Express it is in the company of the inimitable Hercule Poirot :D

അപ്പോൾ സുമിത്ര ചിരിച്ചു. വർഷങ്ങൾക്കപ്പുറത്ത് കേട്ട ഒരു ചിരിയുടെ മാറ്റൊലി മനസ്സിൽ ഒരുനിമിഷം ഒഴുകിനടന്നു.
'എനിക്ക്- എനിക്ക് നിന്നെ ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നു.'
സുമിത്ര വീണ്ടും വികൃതമായി ചിരിച്ചു.
'ഇഷ്ടം.' അയാൾ തിണ്ണയിലെ ചാണകമടർന്ന പാടുകളിലേക്ക് കണ്ണുകൾ താഴ്ത്തിയപ്പോൾ സുമിത്ര പറയുന്നതു കേട്ടു : 'സേതൂന് എന്നും ഒരാളോടേ ഇഷ്ടംണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു. സേതൂനോടുമാത്രം!-'
📌എം.ടി യുടേതായി ഞാനാദ്യം വായിച്ച പുസ്തകം മഞ്ഞ് ആണ്. വളരെ ചെറിയൊരു പുസ്തകമാണെങ്കിലും ഏറെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട ഒന്നായിരുന്നു അത്. പിന്നീട് വായിച്ചത് ഇതിഹാസസൃഷ്ടിയായ രണ്ടാമൂഴവും മൂന്നാമതായി ഈ പുസ്തകവും വായിച്ചു. എം.ടി യുടെ ഓരോ പുസ്തകങ്ങളും വായിച്ചവസാനിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോഴും അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ എഴുത്തിനെ കൂടുതൽ കൂടുതൽ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടുപോവുകയാണ്. മഞ്ഞിലെ വിമലയെപ്പോലെ ഇപ്പോൾ എൻ്റെ ഇഷ്ട സ്ത്രീകഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കാലത്തിലെ സുമിത്രയും കൂടി സ്ഥാനം പിടിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൻ്റെ വായനയുടെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ ഒരു ഒഴുക്കില്ലായ്മ തോന്നിയെങ്കിലും ഓരോ താളുകളും മറിക്കുമ്പോഴും നോവലിൻ്റെ ഹൃദയത്തോട് കൂടുതൽ കൂടുതൽ അടുക്കുന്ന അനുഭൂതിയാണ് എനിക്ക് അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടത്. വായിച്ചവസാനിപ്പോൾ സേതു, സുമിത്ര, തങ്കം എന്ന ഈ നോവലിലെ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിൽ തന്നെ ഉടക്കിനിൽക്കുകയാണ് ഞാൻ.
📌നോവലിൻ്റെ പേരുപോലെ തന്നെ സേതുവിൻ്റെ ബാല്യം മുതൽ അയാളുടെ വളർച്ചയുടെയും ജീവിതത്തിൻ്റെയും പല കാലങ്ങളിലൂടെയുള്ള ഒരു സഞ്ചാരമാണ് ഈ നോവൽ. വായനാനന്തരം നമുക്ക് ഇഷ്ടം തോന്നുക സുമിത്രയോടും തങ്കത്തോടുമായിരിക്കും. കഴിഞ്ഞുപോയ കാലം തിരികെ വരില്ല എന്നുള്ള മനുഷ്യജീവിതത്തെ കുറിച്ചൊരു തിരിച്ചറിവ് എം.ടി ഈ കൃതിയിലൂടെ പറഞ്ഞുവെക്കുന്നു. അത് സേതുവിലൂടെ നമുക്ക് മനസ്സിലാക്കി തരുന്നു. സ്വാർത്ഥനായ സേതു ജീവിതത്തിൽ അറിഞ്ഞും അറിയാതെയും ചെയ്തുപോകുന്ന പല കാര്യങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റിയും തിരിച്ചറിവുണ്ടാകുമ്പോൾ കാലം ഏറെ മുന്നോട്ട് പോയെന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവ് അയാളുടെ മനസ്സിനെ മരവിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ്. വായനക്ക് ശേഷം നാമോരോരുത്തരുടെയും ഉള്ളിൽ നമ്മുടെയൊക്കെ ജീവിതത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അനേകം ചോദ്യങ്ങളുടെ വേലിയേറ്റം ഉണ്ടാകുന്നുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ഈ കുറിപ്പ് എഴുതുമ്പോൾ പോലും ഞാൻ കാലം എന്ന ഈ മനുഷ്യജീവിതത്തിൻ്റെ ഇതിഹാസത്തിൻ്റെ കടലിൽ നിന്ന് കരകയറിയിട്ടില്ല. ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കലെങ്കിലും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട മഹത്തായ ഒരു കൃതിയാണിതെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് നിർത്തുന്നു.

'നിനക്ക് എന്നോട് വെറുപ്പുണ്ടോ?'
അപ്പോൾ സുമിത്ര ചിരിച്ചു. വർഷങ്ങൾക്കപ്പുറത്ത് കേട്ട ഒരു ചിരിയുടെ മാറ്റൊലി മനസ്സിൽ ഒരുനിമിഷം ഒഴുകിനടന്നു.
'എനിക്ക്- എനിക്ക് നിന്നെ ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നു.'
സുമിത്ര വീണ്ടും വികൃതമായി ചിരിച്ചു.

📌എം.ടി യുടേതായി ഞാനാദ്യം വായിച്ച പുസ്തകം മഞ്ഞ് ആണ്. വളരെ ചെറിയൊരു പുസ്തകമാണെങ്കിലും ഏറെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട ഒന്നായിരുന്നു അത്. പിന്നീട് വായിച്ചത് ഇതിഹാസസൃഷ്ടിയായ രണ്ടാമൂഴവും മൂന്നാമതായി ഈ പുസ്തകവും വായിച്ചു. എം.ടി യുടെ ഓരോ പുസ്തകങ്ങളും വായിച്ചവസാനിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോഴും അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ എഴുത്തിനെ കൂടുതൽ കൂടുതൽ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടുപോവുകയാണ്. മഞ്ഞിലെ വിമലയെപ്പോലെ ഇപ്പോൾ എൻ്റെ ഇഷ്ട സ്ത്രീകഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കാലത്തിലെ സുമിത്രയും കൂടി സ്ഥാനം പിടിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൻ്റെ വായനയുടെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ ഒരു ഒഴുക്കില്ലായ്മ തോന്നിയെങ്കിലും ഓരോ താളുകളും മറിക്കുമ്പോഴും നോവലിൻ്റെ ഹൃദയത്തോട് കൂടുതൽ കൂടുതൽ അടുക്കുന്ന അനുഭൂതിയാണ് എനിക്ക് അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടത്. വായിച്ചവസാനിപ്പോൾ സേതു, സുമിത്ര, തങ്കം എന്ന ഈ നോവലിലെ പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിൽ തന്നെ ഉടക്കിനിൽക്കുകയാണ് ഞാൻ.
📌നോവലിൻ്റെ പേരുപോലെ തന്നെ സേതുവിൻ്റെ ബാല്യം മുതൽ അയാളുടെ വളർച്ചയുടെയും ജീവിതത്തിൻ്റെയും പല കാലങ്ങളിലൂടെയുള്ള ഒരു സഞ്ചാരമാണ് ഈ നോവൽ. വായനാനന്തരം നമുക്ക് ഇഷ്ടം തോന്നുക സുമിത്രയോടും തങ്കത്തോടുമായിരിക്കും. കഴിഞ്ഞുപോയ കാലം തിരികെ വരില്ല എന്നുള്ള മനുഷ്യജീവിതത്തെ കുറിച്ചൊരു തിരിച്ചറിവ് എം.ടി ഈ കൃതിയിലൂടെ പറഞ്ഞുവെക്കുന്നു. അത് സേതുവിലൂടെ നമുക്ക് മനസ്സിലാക്കി തരുന്നു. സ്വാർത്ഥനായ സേതു ജീവിതത്തിൽ അറിഞ്ഞും അറിയാതെയും ചെയ്തുപോകുന്ന പല കാര്യങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റിയും തിരിച്ചറിവുണ്ടാകുമ്പോൾ കാലം ഏറെ മുന്നോട്ട് പോയെന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവ് അയാളുടെ മനസ്സിനെ മരവിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ്. വായനക്ക് ശേഷം നാമോരോരുത്തരുടെയും ഉള്ളിൽ നമ്മുടെയൊക്കെ ജീവിതത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അനേകം ചോദ്യങ്ങളുടെ വേലിയേറ്റം ഉണ്ടാകുന്നുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ഈ കുറിപ്പ് എഴുതുമ്പോൾ പോലും ഞാൻ കാലം എന്ന ഈ മനുഷ്യജീവിതത്തിൻ്റെ ഇതിഹാസത്തിൻ്റെ കടലിൽ നിന്ന് കരകയറിയിട്ടില്ല. ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കലെങ്കിലും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട മഹത്തായ ഒരു കൃതിയാണിതെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് നിർത്തുന്നു.

മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിന് നെറുകയിൽ ചാർത്താവുന്ന തിലകമാണ് എം ടി യുടെ രചനകൾ. കേരളത്തിലെ നാട്ടിൻപുറങ്ങളെ ഇത്രത്തോളവും മനോഹരമായി എങ്ങനെ വർണിക്കാൻ സാധിക്കുന്നു എന്ന് ഞാൻ പലപ്പോഴും ചിന്തിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഓരോ മണൽത്തരിയെയും അതിൻറെ അന്തസ്സത്ത ഉൾക്കൊണ്ടു കൊണ്ട് കഥാകാരൻ ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് ആവാഹിച്ചെടുക്കുകയും വായനക്കാരൻറെ ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് പകർന്നു തരികയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. എം ടി യുടെ ആത്മകഥാംശപരമായ നോവലാണു "കാലം". നിളയും, വിക്ടോറിയയും, ഒലവക്കോടും, നെൽപ്പാടങ്ങളും, ഇല്ലവും, അങ്ങിനെ ഞങ്ങളുടെ പാലക്കാടിൻറെ പച്ചയായ ചിത്രം എഴുത്തുകാരൻ തുറന്നുകാട്ടിയതിൽ അഭിമാനമുണ്ട്. നിഷ്കളങ്കതയും ഗ്രാമീണതയുടെ നൈർമല്യവുമുള്ള പല കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെയും ഈ നോവലിൽ കാണാം, അവരെല്ലാം തന്നെ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നവരാണ് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഇന്നും ജീവിക്കുന്നവരാണ്. ഓരോ യുവാക്കളിലും ഓരോ സേതു ഉണ്ടെന്ന് ഈ നോവൽ വായിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് പെട്ടെന്നു മനസിലാക്കാം. കാലത്തിൻറെ ഗതിവിഗതികൾ സേതുവിൻറെ ജീവിതത്തിലുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന മാറ്റങ്ങൾ നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സിനെ മറ്റൊരു തലത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കാൻ പോന്നവയാണ്. എവിടെ നിന്നാണോ തുടങ്ങിയത് അവിടെ തന്നെ സേതു അവസാനം എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു. അവൻറെ ഉള്ളിലുള്ള സ്വത്വത്തെ അവനെങ്ങനെ കണ്ടില്ല എന്നു നടിക്കാൻ പറ്റും? നോവലിൻറെ അവസാനം സേതുവിൻറെ ജീവിതം മറ്റൊരു തലത്തിലേക്ക് യാത്ര നടത്തുകയാവാം..

കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡ് നേടിയ വളരെ പോപ്പുലർ ആയ എം ടി യുടെ നോവലാണ് കാലം.
സേതു എന്ന സേതുമാധവന്റെ കഥയാണ് കാലം. സേതുവിന്റെ വികാരങ്ങളും വിചാരങ്ങളും മോഹങ്ങളും താല്പര്യങ്ങളും ബന്ധങ്ങളും എല്ലാം കഥയിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോകുന്നു. അയാളിലെ സ്വാർത്ഥത കഥയിലുടനീളം പല സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിലായി പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. കാലം അയാളുടെ പ്രതീക്ഷക്കൊത്തു ഒരിടത്തും നിൽക്കുന്നില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ പ്രതീക്ഷകളറ്റ് മനസ്സ് മരവിച്ചു പോകുന്ന കാലത്ത് അയാൾക്ക് സ്വന്തം നേട്ടങ്ങളിൽ പുച്ഛത്തോടെ മാത്രമേ നോക്കിക്കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നുള്ളു.
ആദ്യാവസാനം നൊമ്പരപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത് സുമിത്ര തന്നെയാണ്. സേതുവിനോപ്പം സുമിത്രയുടെയും ജീവിതം ഒരേ താളത്തിൽ സമാന്തരമായി ഒരേ അവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നതായി മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നു.
ഒടുവിൽ സേതുവിനോടായി സുമിത്ര പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
"സേതൂന്ന് എന്നും ഒരാളോടെ ഇഷ്ടേംണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ... സേതുന്നോട് മാത്രം....." ..
സ്വാർത്ഥത നിറഞ്ഞ സേതുവിനെ വ്യക്തമായി മനസ്സിലാക്കി തന്നെയാണ് സുമിത്ര അത് പറയുന്നതെങ്കിലും. കാലം മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുമ്പോൾ സേതുവിന് തന്നോട് തന്നെ ഇഷ്ടത്തെക്കാളേറെ പുച്ഛമാണ് തോന്നുന്നത്.

ആദ്യാവസാനം നൊമ്പരപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത് സുമിത്ര തന്നെയാണ്. സേതുവിനോപ്പം സുമിത്രയുടെയും ജീവിതം ഒരേ താളത്തിൽ സമാന്തരമായി ഒരേ അവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നതായി മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നു.
ഒടുവിൽ സേതുവിനോടായി സുമിത്ര പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
"സേതൂന്ന് എന്നും ഒരാളോടെ ഇഷ്ടേംണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ... സേതുന്നോട് മാത്രം....." ..

കേരളത്തിലെ 1940-60 കാലഘട്ടം... കുടുംബ ബന്ധങ്ങൾ... നാട്ടുകാർ... നഗരം... ക്യാമ്പസ്.... എല്ലാം വരച്ചു കാട്ടുന്ന ഇതിഹാസമാണ് എം ടി യുടെ കാലം....... പ്രണയവും വിരഹവും തൊഴിലില്ലായ്മയും ദാരിദ്ര്യവും കള്ളവും ചതിയും വഞ്ചനയും ആർഭാടവും ആഘോഷവും പട്ടിണിയും പരിവട്ടവും... അങ്ങനെയങ്ങനെ നോവൽ പ്രതിപാദിക്കാത്ത മേഖലകൾ ഒന്നുമില്ല... എല്ലാം ഒത്തിണങ്ങിയ മനോഹരമായ ഒരു ജീവിതം...... വായിച്ചു തീരും വരെ ഒരു മനോഹരമായ സിനിമ കാണുന്നത് പോലെ നമ്മളെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുന്നു.....

Thoughts
Towards the end of the book, Sumitra says, ‘Sethu, you have always only loved yourself’. That is accurate in regards to this person. From the time he was a teenager, Sethu has always resented his family’s impoverished circumstances, yearning to escape their trappings.
Kaalam (Time) is a story of the life of our protagonist, as he struggles through life, swimming from one coast to another, desperately trying to find a final oasis where he might find some solace. But, by the end, he realizes that his life’s achievements are a series of failures and what-ifs. That he’s been swimming all life, only to end up back where he had begun.
Our protagonist Sethu is someone who is temperamental, Insecure and like a fickle bee jumps from one women to another, based to who catches him fancy at the time. Be it Sumitra, Thankamani or Lalitha. he chases after wealth and riches in much the same way, a man tries to keep his balance while having one leg each on a different boat. Circumstances force him to choose love or wealth, and like the hunter trying to catch both the birds, he often misses the mark.
His decisions, His decisions are what led to his final fate at the end of the story. And the writer goes to great lengths to point that out. Certainly circumstances and environment might've played a role. But it was Sethu who choses to leave each of his lovers for reasons which seemed reasonable at the time. In Sethu we see many of us, our dreams, hopes aspirations and failures when we first step out into life. If is incredible in a sense how a character written for 1950s India gains empathy in contemporary time. But then again, MT's words always had a timeless quality to them.
It encompasses this feeling of loss that everyone has felt at least once in life. The thought of ‘what my life would have been, have I chosen differently’? Or, ‘what if I had the courage to accept love, instead of running from it?’, or ‘Does my life and struggles mean anything in the grand scheme of things?’
The language is much more somber, and subdued and lacks the usual explosive prose characteristic of MT’s works. There is a profound sense of longing and loss associated with the human condition. That all we are is inconsequential. Towards the end, as we leave Sethu alone on the banks of the river, we empathize with him to an extent.
Synopsis
Sethumadhavan is the youngest son of an impoverished patrician family, living on the drying banks of the river Nila. Since he came of age, Sethu has resented the decrepit state of his family, as well as family members whom he sees as vulgar. Yearning to escape this existence which he sees as wretched, he, like any educated youth, attempts to concentrate on studies and get a stable government job.
In the meanwhile, he gets close to Sumitra, a girl of similar age from a family of close acquaintance. Their relationship progresses past romance, and develops into one of physical intimacy. When he passed matriculation and got admitted into the Victoria college in Palakkad, he bids her goodbye, and promises to keep in touch.
By scraping together savings and borrowing the rest, Sethu’s folks arrange for him to go to college. At his college and hostel lodgings however, he is quickly discouraged by his fellow students, many of whom hail from affluent families, and are not averse to brandishing their luxuries. Sethu on the other hand, has to tighten his belt every month, and pinch pennies to save enough for money and basic amenities. His feeling of inadequacy is further compounded, and he begins indulging in vices of smoking and booze.
His relationship with Sumitra had started to cool with distance. And partly because he had found another, younger object of affection, in the form of his distant relative Thankam, whom he had met during a family gathering. They had fallen in love, like the immature lovelorn teenagers they were, making grand promises of marriage and eternal love.
But on his side, the growing challenges of college life, an unstable financial situation, as well as the uncertainty of being a jobless graduate increasingly plagues Sethu. So, once he finished his college education, he cut off things with Thankam, instead focusing on an increasingly futile endeavor of securing stable government employment. His situation is not helped by the fact that his father, the sole income earner of the family, has just retired and returned home.
Desperate, he applies and gets selected for a lower end government posting, and reluctantly leaves for training. But at the training camp, he becomes averse to the spartan living conditions as well as the blatant favoritism, gets in a spat with his superior, and quits within the day. With no direction, and too afraid to return home once again jobless, Sethu leaves town, his destination unknown.
A few years down the line, Sethu has managed to get a job as a clerk in the company of the affluent Srinivasan, a man of many vices. The job is hard, and the pay is modest, but he tries to make the most of it. Yet, his inherent sense of inferiority creeps up, as he becomes jealous of the sheer fortune which passes through Srinivasan’s offices everyday, while he has to live in squalor.
Srinivasan in turn uses Sethu as a handyman, and ‘generously’ gives him rent free accommodation in one of his lodges. The caveat, Srinivasan gets to use the place at times, entertaining his several female companions. Suffice to say his boss is not the best role model.
Biting down his revulsion and resentment, Sethu continues his daily grind, and by chance gets close to Srinivasan’s missus, Lalitha. Both lonely souls, ignored in a monotonous existence, become close and start a secret relationship.
Fortune favors him, and Srinivasan becomes paralyzed due to a stroke and bedridden. With recommendation from Lalitha, Sethu becomes the de facto caretaker of Srinivasan’s vast assets. He skims off the top all the while keeping the affair with Lalitha, until the Boss gets wise and kicks him out. Lalitha files for divorce and the couple start a new life.
Several more years pass, Sethu has become a wealthy man, but he finds himself uncomfortable in the trappings of high class life. After catching Lalitha in a compromising situation with another man, he packs his bags and leaves for the solace of his home.
Back home, things have changed. Owing to their family members in better positions, the house is no longer in dire straits. But Sethu’s mother is absent to welcome him, having died years earlier, and cremated while Sethu was unable to attend her funeral.
As he ponders over his past life, what he accomplished seems like nothing but failures. He may have the money, but Sethu feels more alone than ever. Walking down familiar lanes, he comes across Sumitra, his first love. She now lives as an ascetic with only prayer and God to keep her company.
Desperate for companionship, Sethu tells Sumitra that he loves her. But she corrects him ‘You have always only loved yourself Sethu’, and leaves him alone once again, to an uncertain future.
Towards the end of the book, Sumitra says, ‘Sethu, you have always only loved yourself’. That is accurate in regards to this person. From the time he was a teenager, Sethu has always resented his family’s impoverished circumstances, yearning to escape their trappings.
Kaalam (Time) is a story of the life of our protagonist, as he struggles through life, swimming from one coast to another, desperately trying to find a final oasis where he might find some solace. But, by the end, he realizes that his life’s achievements are a series of failures and what-ifs. That he’s been swimming all life, only to end up back where he had begun.
Our protagonist Sethu is someone who is temperamental, Insecure and like a fickle bee jumps from one women to another, based to who catches him fancy at the time. Be it Sumitra, Thankamani or Lalitha. he chases after wealth and riches in much the same way, a man tries to keep his balance while having one leg each on a different boat. Circumstances force him to choose love or wealth, and like the hunter trying to catch both the birds, he often misses the mark.
His decisions, His decisions are what led to his final fate at the end of the story. And the writer goes to great lengths to point that out. Certainly circumstances and environment might've played a role. But it was Sethu who choses to leave each of his lovers for reasons which seemed reasonable at the time. 1969 ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ഈ നോവലിന് കേന്ദ്രസാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡ് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. സേതുവിന്റെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടിലൂടെയാണ് ഈ ലോകത്തെ വായനക്കാർ കാണുന്നത്. 16 വയസ്സുകാരനായ സേതുവിലൂടെയാണ് കഥ തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. കാലത്തിന്റെ കുത്തൊഴുക്കിൽ ജീവിതത്തെ കരയ്ക്കടുപ്പിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന ആളുകളുടെ കഥയാണിത്. ഇത് സേതുവിന്റെ മാത്രം കഥയല്ല. ഇത്ത ഓരോ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടേയും കാലാനുസൃതമായ മാറ്റങ്ങളും അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. സേതുവും സുമിത്രയും തങ്കവും ഉണ്ണിനമ്പൂതിരിയും മാധവമാമ്മയും ചെറിയമ്മയും അമ്മയും പരമേശ്വരൻ ഏട്ടനും ഒക്കെ മനസ്സിൽ തങ്ങിനിൽക്കുന്നു. ഇന്നലെകളെ തിരിച്ചു പിടിക്കാൻ ആവില്ല. സ്വാർത്ഥതയുടെ പേരിൽ നഷ്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയതിന്റെ മൂല്യം പിന്നീടാണ് സേതുവിന് പോലും മനസ്സിലാകുന്നത്. കാലം കുറെ തിരിച്ചറിവുകൾ കൂടി സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. എംടിയുടെ മഹത്തായ രചനകൾ ഒന്ന്.

This is a good book that suffers from quality of ebook reproduction, and sometimes quality of translation. The book is sort of a coming of age type book for a young man in India. I would think of it as sort of a "catcher in the rye" except the character is a little less likable. It is short and I think there are some great literary devices being used, but it is hard to follow sometimes because of translation and languages. Plus referring to the glossary on a kindle is a pain.

I read the book with high expectations as it is written by an esteemed writer. But the book was boring although it has an interesting writing style. It is the story of Sethu who is an ambitious person who lives in a joint family. But the selfishness of Sethu is shown throughout the story. I like the female characters who appears in Sethu's life at different times

Okay - I struggled with this book. The protagonist was a selfish, self obsessed young man and all the other characters viewed through his narrative were not likeable or relatable. Covering a period of probably three decades the book takes us into Kerala into the life of a village in Kerala post independence with poverty, despondence, helplessness, greed, gossipy curiosity etc., etc.,
Growing up I always avoided Malayalam cinema because of its despondent realism. Of the struggles of unemployment, neeae poverty, death being slapped across your face. While the Malayalis might have decided a lot of the 90s Tamil cinema as timepass action masala, romance and overcoming adversity, atleast I used to think ,life has enough misery for me to read the fictional misery of others when there is no redeeming arc.
I've always heard of the matriarchal Nair community, but in this book, its depiction showed how it meant a lack of strong familial bonding.
Frankly the book was a let down for me. I ploughed throw it like a text book waiting for it to end, skimmed through pages too....but I also admired the writer for his writing and his portrayal of the main character. An unflinching, unpitying account of Sethu , his weak character and his lack of connection with family. It was hard, ugly and not something I like to read at all.

First read of 2025. This book first came out in 1969. It received the Kendra Sahitya Academy award in 1971. It isn't the accolades that would stand the test of 'time'. It is the ease at which the writer brings us close to the characters and transports us into the plot. MT stands tall and how! Sethu, in all his agony, joys, crude selfishness, and the constant battle with self hits close to home, even 55 yrs after the book has come out. The ecological beauty of Kollangode, the fall of feudal systems, poverty, ambitions, dreams, and the final disillusionment, all mirroring Nila! What a treat by the legend auteur.

This book fell into my hands when I was looking through the shelves at my home. And thank god for that. It has been a long time since I've delved into a book this much. As always, M.T. sir's books are miraculous in it's own way. I felt what Sethu felt, I reacted when he did and I cried with him. I travelled back into those times - പഴയ കേരളം. എന്തു മനോഹരമായാണ് ഓരോ വരിയും എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നത്! സുമിത്ര - she might be the one person for whom I still feel for. Her humble way of talking and her fate. A character who is sidelined yet, she holds a significant place in the story. The story shows how time and fate changes people along with it.
