Has an entire section about how to spot a liar and it's full of harmful stereotypes that lead to stigmatizing non-dominant cultural norms for things like facial expression, eye contact, gesture, and body language - meaning it teaches people to read Autistic or non-WASP cultural people as lying or manipulative.
Some of the other portions are less outwardly problematic but still working at a pretty basic level regarding media literacy and common financial scams.

This is a simple or introductory overview of some of the issues surrounding Manipulation and Brainwashing, and their active uses in what the author characterizes as Psychological Warfare. This ‘warfare’ is not so much military action, as the day to day activities which take place in personal relationships, the workplace, social settings, etc.
The book contains some interesting information but it is mainly descriptive, rather than evaluative, and descriptions were a bit basic in places. For example, we hear that ‘employing a vast number of troops with advanced weaponry will often result in low morale… for the other side’ (5%). Yes that is true but isn’t it rather obvious?
Much of the book is spent describing how manipulation takes place, as the book assumes that manipulation is one of the key elements of Psychological Warfare. But manipulation is always characterized in the book as negative, whereas in reality there can be positive examples of it. The concept of ‘Nudge’ (and the book of the same name) is an example of how governments try to change people’s behaviour, such as saving for retirement. Isn’t that a form of manipulation, albeit an arguably good form? So, one of the problems in the book is that it does not carefully define its terms and distinguish what it is refers to as the bad behaviour of manipulation, from possibly neutral or good behaviours which might otherwise share salient features.
Chapter 2 illustrates the problem. This chapter focuses upon Dark Personalities and works through a description of Dark personality traits. The assumption seems to be that those traits have a particularly important explanatory role in Psychological warfare. And yes, of course they are relevant. But are there practitioners choosing Psychological warfare as a deliberate tactic, who do not possess Dark Personalities? This is an important question to ask, otherwise the book is potentially misleading people to think that only those of a certain psychological ‘type’ will engage in Psychological Warfare. But the question is unasked, and so the books assumption is unargued.
The chapter on ‘Signs of Lying’ (Chapter 3) was a little worrying, as it asserts that lying can be spotted by learning the signs of it. But is that really true? After 9/11 Security Agencies spent enormous amounts of money training staff to spot potential hijackers by looking for ‘signs of lying.’ But there are some Psychologists who now claim that such training can never be fully effective, and so the concept of ‘signs of lying’ is one that must be taken carefully. Once again the issues are more complex and more nuanced that the book indicates to the reader.
Towards the end of the book religious issues crop up. The author asserts that ‘the term ‘cult’ was used to describe the rebels who opposed the more traditional beliefs of Catholicism’ (69%). That is not the case. At the time Catholic theology was written in Latin, so the key issue is how the Latin word ‘cultus’ was used. It certainly wasn’t reserved just for ‘opponents,’ as devotions and prayers for particular saints were often described as a ‘cultus.’ Once again the book is oversimplifying issues to the point of inaccuracy.
Overall, there are nuggets of interesting information in the book, but it is a little too general and superficial to be anything more than a quick overview of some salient points relating to Psychological Warfare.

Brilliant! Love the info 👌
I'm just starting to read books like this so i'm no expert but I did really enjoy this one.
I would think people know this knowledge dead down, or would hope, but sometimes needs dragging back to the front.
This is a good example and makes real good connections with past events to now, which gives it real credibility.
This will get you thinking for yourself

I expected this book to provide an in-depth review of psychological warfare, such as propaganda, media, government, political communication. Instead, it only briefly mentioned these topics, while the majority of the book talked about 1on1 communications with other people. And even these topics were only touched lightly. The book was reminiscent of a collection of Wikipedia articles.

I was shocked that there were zero citations. Apparently, this book is just one guy’s opinions on psychological phenomena.

Could've included more tactics, trainings and skills. But great book for people who want to learn about psychological manipulation and warfare
