When Scottish man, Dean Nicholson, set off on his around the world bike ride in 2018, he had no idea where it would take him. After his friend Ricky left Dean to travel on alone, it was his journey through parts of Bosnia which changed everything for him. The tiny abandoned kitten on the side of the road that Dean named Nala (from the Lion King) would become his great companion, best friend, and conscience. Dean’s small Instagram presence suddenly ballooned to hundreds of thousands of followers. ...more
I started following the author in Instagram some time ago because who doesn't want to see photos of a cat travelling the world with her rescuer! Now that this book is out I was able to read the story of Nala's rescue, and the impact she had on Nicholson's life, and the lives of the people they've met. I've got a whole new respect for the author after hearing about his passion for environmental and animal-related causes, and I'm so happy he's been able to make positive changes in the world around ...more

Dean Nicholson is a bighearted Scottish bloke biking his way down the coastline from Bosnia, when he and his buddy have a spat and part ways. At a rest in Montenegro, he sees a scrawny, malnourished kitten crawling on some rocks and decides to save her. Of course, they become inseparable almost immediately, and have some scary adventures together as they travel south to Greece, spend a summer in Santorini, and start crossing Turkey before routes through India and Iran and Russia become too chall ...more

I loved it. I have followed them on Instagram since the Dodo video and it was fun to relive their adventures but also find out more about the what was going on behind the scenes and more about Dean’s thoughts on things.

Amazing story! I don't know why I hadn't heard of them before reading this book, but you better bet I'm going to keep up with it now.

This is one of my favourite books of this year by far. I was pretty disappointed when my own three month bike trip in Europe was cancelled this summer, and this story has given me a fix of it so that I can hold off until it is safe to do it.

I won this book through the Goodreads giveaways so thank you to goodreads and the author for providing me with a copy of this

An absolute joy to read, and I honestly could not have picked a more perfect time to read this. During COVID times when travel is discouraged, I was able to journey with Dean Nicholson and Nala through Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary (one place that I actually really have been) and these two could not have been better companions. As you can see from the title, it's a bike ride around the globe. Dean'

Nala means “gift” in Swahili. I believe all animals are gifts and having them in your life will transform you.

I followed on my personal IG for quite awhile and when I saw this in , I immediately borrowed it. I didn’t know that pets have passport and I love Nala’s antics and I really hope for the opportunity to visit Greece when COVID-19 ends. There are lots of pictures in the book with cute illustrations. Go check out Dean’s instagram page and you will be bowled by the cuteness of Nala and the l

I’ve been a big fan of Dean and Nala for quite some time now.

When Dean said he was writing a book about his journey I was thrilled!

And this book did not disappoint.

I absolutely loved reading about all the things I saw Dean and Nala do on Instagram. But now with more details!

I just love them so much.
I have been a follower of Dean and Nala’s instagram account (@1bike1world) and his Youtube channel since early 2019 and it has been such a joy to see their posts. I am an avid animal lover and traveler so their account was especially a great one to follow. When we all learned that Dean had written a book retelling his journey since he rescued Nala, I was ecstatic to read it. Reading this book made me respect Dean so much more. The way he admitted how much he has grown since meeting Nala was real ...more

If you've been following Dean and Nala's story on Istagram or YouTube or you discovered it through the Dodo video (like I did), then you might enjoy this book. You get to live vicariously in Dean's lifestyle of just biking around Europe with no schedule, worries, or responsibilities. His biggest issues are when he needs to wait around in a scenic villa for several weeks to get the proper immunizations for his cat or recover from his latest injury that was made worse by him not listening to any d ...more

Had come across this book a while ago and borrowed and forgot completely about it. Started it and enjoyed it so much that I had finished reading it by the next day. I don't generally read non-fiction, but this is a cute story about a Scotsman who set off to ride around the world and after parting from his mate, came across an abandoned kitten in Bosnia. Nala and Dean joined together and are travelling across Europe and hopefully after COVID the rest of the world, sharing their adventures via You ...more

Some time last year, the video from The Dodo that introduced Dean and Nala to the world popped up in my Facebook feed. Guy travelling around the world on his bike with an incredibly adorable cat in tow? What's not to love?
I really enjoyed reading about their adventures thus far, about their travels, the uses Dean has put their unexpected internet fame to, as well as what his experiences on the road, the things he's seen and the people he's met along the way have taught him about himself and abou

This completes Task 24: Read a book featuring a beloved pet where the pet doesn’t die, of the Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge.

This was exactly what I needed to read, but at the same time, horrible, because I can't travel to any of these countries. Dean also reinforces my ultimate dream to have an adventure cat to take on hikes and bike rides and boat rides. My next cat will be an adventure cat; my husband thinks it's wishful thinking.

I loved the story of how he met Nala and she became his dau

Well, this is as adorable as I expected! I follow Dean and Nala on Instagram, so I knew some of their backstory already, but I appreciated seeing their journey unfold in greater detail. Dean is vulnerable here, sharing his fears and anxieties about not only biking around the world, but also taking care of an abandoned kitten. (I could have done with less of how many "stupid" things he had done over the yea

Incredible story! Not just an adventure with a cat passenger on a bike, it’s a really reflective story about choosing your own route through the world at your own pace. Friendship with a cat, travels round the world on a bike - no bad points in this book!

I've followed Dean and Nala ever since their Dodo video went live.
It amazes me how these little cute furballs can have such an impact of out lives. As a cat owner myself I was deeply touched by this story.

I have followed Dean and Nala for quite a while on Instagram and loved being able to read Dean's account of their adventures in depth. You can actually feel the love between them through his words. Like so many others, I'm one of the followers who discovered Dean and Nala after The Dodo featured them back in April of 2019. I'm an avid traveler and a huge fan of cats in general, so his story spoke to me and I've followed their journey online every day since then.

This book is way more than just cute pictures (although there are definitely plenty of those), as it tells Dean's story of why he set out on this journey in the first place, what he's learned along the way, who he's met, what he's

Absolutely loved this book. It's an easy read and although I've followed Dean and Nala from very early on in their journey, there was still much to learn about their journey together. Highly recommended and, in fact, I've recommended it to several fellow cat lovers already. One friend is buying it for her 82 year old mother for Christmas. Dean is one cool dude, a hardy soul who takes life's ups and downs in his stride, albeit with a few scary and thought-provoking moments. He's caring and giving ...more

Giving 2 stars because of the charity and generosity, the read however just didn't do much for me. Not a fan of social media and if I would have follwed this journey on Instagram before reading maybe it would have been better. However I didn't and it wasn't. Props on the journey, all very cool and admirable l, but as a literary journey not for me. ...more

‘I had always been good at fixing and building stuff, but I hadn’t built much of a life for myself ... I felt that by hitting the road and spending time in another part of the world, I might somehow find myself. Or, at least, find a way of being myself. Someone said to me once that I hit the road to find a road. That seemed about right.’

I have been an avid follower of Dean and Nala since they were featured by The Dodo video. Every morning I need my ‘Dean and Nala’ fix to get me through the day.

Wow! This book is my favourite book this year. I knew I would enjoy this book, but enjoy is an understatement. It was absolutely incredible! The world needs more people like Dean. What a kind and generous person.

The whole book just melted my heart, I felt so happy that he found Nala and kept her as his own, cared for her and went above and beyond for her. Having rescued four cats myself, two of them which were left in a box on Blackpool beach... to read about Dean rescuing Nala and also rescuing

This is a great book for the time: an endearing, uplifting, and enchanting tale about a cat and her human. I've been following Nala and Dean on their journey since last year and when I heard this book was coming out, I just had to get it. And it did not disappoint. In addition to being a lovely story about a man rescuing a kitten (and, let's face it, she rescuing him), it's also about seeing the world, finding the goodness in people, and learning that maybe -- just maybe -- we're all a bit more ...more

So what did I think of the book?
