Rate this book
Simone Warner is a mom, a perfectionist, and former CEO. She’s spent her life living up to the expectations of others—which is why she decides to have a one-night stand with a gorgeous tennis player eight years her junior. One wild night of reckless abandon, right?

Not exactly.

After she quits her job as CEO of Warner Hotels, Simone agrees to help notorious tennis player Julian Smoke coach a new top-secret player. Tennis has always been her passion, and Simone eagerly takes the plunge. What she doesn’t expect is for her steamy one-night stand to waltz through the doors with a smirk on his face and a racket in hand.

Alex Wilde can’t seem to get a handle on his game. Obsessed with besting his vile tennis star step-brother, he turns to Julian Smoke and his training center for help. That’s when he sees her—the only woman who has ever left his bed without a goodbye. Simone Warner is his new assistant coach…and his only hope at getting back into the game.

The problem? Alex can’t stop thinking about the woman who holds his future in her hands. And now, he has to play a very different kind of game, one where he has to win the girl.

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Trope: forced proximity
Angst: 😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥

Simone Warner gave up her high stress life as a hotel CEO to find her passion - helping to coach tennis. The newly divorced mom has the surprise of her life when her first student turns out to be the wild one night stand she had left behind. Alex Wilde can't seem to get out of his own head, but with some help from Simone, the one woman who seems to get him best, he hopes to get his career (and his love life) on track.

Cute, feel good story. Simone and Alex were both well developed and very likable. With the exception of a bit in the middle, the storyline moved well. The chemistry between Simone and Alex was off the charts and I loved the relationship between Alex and Simone's daughter. This isn't my usual sub-genre, but I really enjoyed it. It is my first book by Ashley R. King, but I'll definitely be looking for the next book in the series which looks like it'll be fun!

The Wilde Card is the second book in the Ace of Hearts series by Ashley R. King. It is a standalone, but would probably be best enjoyed after reading book 1. The story is told in 3rd person, but from dual perspective.

I'm so lucky to have been a beta reader for this wonderful book. I adored Ashley's debut novel, Painting the Lines, and I am in shock at how much she had developed as an author in such a short time.

The characters in this book are so sweet and their connection is so so genuine. I cried and I laughed and I laughed until I cried. My heart is so connected to this story and I'm honestly blown away.

I can't wait for y'all to read it.

The humor in this book was so well-written. I found myself alternating between chuckling, snorting, and giggling from all the one-liners and cheesy jokes from the characters, not to mention some of the ridiculous situations that they got themselves into.

Simone and Alex’s dynamic varied from sweet to professional, romantic, and sexy– most importantly, though, was the fact that their relationship was based on respect and healthy communication. Nothing irks me more in a book than when a couple doesn’t speak to each other and clearly spell out needs. This is the contrary with Simone and Alex (or Simex, as their celeb couple name was dubbed hahah), who spend the entirety of the story getting to know each other on many levels of intimacy, and then building upon this trust to become one powerhouse of a team on and off the tennis court.

I enjoyed the steamy scenes in this novel, as they were appropriate for the context of the story. These moments shared by Simone and Alex served to strengthen the fondness they had for each other as the central plot progressed. And the way Alex sprinkled bits of French in his everyday conversations?? Mon Dieu, that’s a whole separate reason all on its own for why you should read this book hehe.

I liked that the story never went over-the-top or became too dramatic, and stayed relatively light-hearted. Simone and Alex were well fleshed out individuals, and I also enjoyed reading about the multiple supporting characters who play important parts in the protagonists’ arcs. I just loved all the sweet, honest, and raw moments between the main couple. While this is my first introduction to the author’s works I’ll be sure to keep her on my radar for future books!

*Thank you so much to the author, City Owl Press, and Storygram Tours for the gifted ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

I was incredibly lucky to have the chance to beta read for Ashley. She is so sweet and her writing is amazing.

This tension filled steamy romance will leave you with a full heart. Both characters where so loveable and had great banter.

The pace/flow of the book is amazing and every minute keeps you hooked and wanting more.

If you haven’t read book one Painting the Lines I would definitely order it so you don’t miss out.

Note: Thank you to Netgalley & publishers for allowing me access to this arc in exchange for an honest review! Please note that all opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I'm trying to read as many romance novels as possible in February, so I was happy to see that I was given access to this cute romance!

I was first drawn to The Wilde Card because of the cover and the name. I mean, look at it; it's adorable! The book started off with an intriguing scene and just kept going from there. I read it in two sessions but forced myself through a portion past the middle (hence, the three stars). I also felt like there were a few moments where the character's interactions weren't genuine and seemed forced. However, I think that overall the story has a lot of funny moments, and it's a cheesy, slow-burn romance. I just didn’t LOVE it, but that doesn’t mean you won't!

"I can't help your game if i can't get into your head"

"Oh you're in my head, ma chérie. Believe me."
The book started off incredibly well, with the chemistry between Alex and Simone being off the charts. The first chapter immediately draws you in and you just HAVE to know more, you know? I absolutely love sports romances and tennis being a sport that's not usually written about, definitely made The Wilde Card stand out.
The one night stand? the dual pov? the chemistry? a single parent with an adorable 8 year old? a coach-player romance?
I was definitely sold and was pretty sure it was going to make my favourites shelf. Unfortunately, it fell a little short for me due to some parts in the middle.
Here's a few thoughts:

Setbacks-
✶ Simone being Alex's coach and Alex's current game was more than enough reason for them to not act on their feelings and add to built-up tension from the night of the ball. The tension would've been a fun addition to the plot and entertaining to read. I feel like most readers like the build-up to when the characters actually get together, which in this case was non-existent. The protagonists are only confused about being together in a relationship but sleep together whenever they want to anyway.

sleep together, question feelings, do we date? repeat. x 3
yep. that's the plot summed up for you in terms of relationship dynamic. it was a little repetitive and I was expecting it by the third time anyway.

✶ A few dialogues and interactions seemed forced and unnatural.

✶ While this is a slowburn because they don't get together relationship-wise until the very end, all their confessions and sleeping together don't make it feel like one.

Things i really liked-
✶ I LOVED the tennis aspect of it. I knew nothing about the sport and haven't watched any tennis matches as such but the book had me looking up stuff anyway.

✶ I think the author did a great job at the side characters because I really wanted to read the first book, Painting the Lines about Amalie and Julian as soon as she mentioned them. I decided not to read it because I was short on time and regretted it the whole time because they're such interesting characters.

✶ The found family dynamic with everybody at the end, was also a great addition and nicely done.

✶ I loved Lula! kids in books make me happy and she was such a sweetheart:)

Overall, while the start had me hooked, the book went significantly downhill for me after that. However, I did like how easy to read and fast paced it was. just because i didn't love it, doesn't mean you won't. you should definitely give The Wilde Card a chance:) and add it to your tbrs.

I can’t tell you how in love I am with this second book in the series! Ok, I will. Every second captured my attention, to the point I was annoyed when I had to put it down to do life tasks! What an easy book to love, full of relatable dreams of love and success. If you’ve ever felt you needed a change in life, that you need adventure, or you need to get in touch with your true self or an interest you had in the past, this book is for you. It’s not only romantic, but inspiring. And, I laughed OUT LOUD at times. That’s how much this book pleased me as a reader- it’s the whole package. I also have to say that I felt comfort in being in the world of these characters again too, with a brand new shiny story. A must read. Cannot wait for the last in the series!

I’m not sure how Ashley R. King manages to do it, but she got me, a person who has never watched a game (a match?) of tennis, to become deeply engrossed in a book featuring tennis again. She must be a wizard or something. 🎾

I absolutely freakin’ loved PAINTING THE LINES, and THE WILDE CARD, Book 2 in the series, is an excellent addition. I really liked that the heroine is a single mom. That's not something I've read much, and I really enjoyed that. Like her previous works, King's writing style pulled me in from the jump. There are very few authors I can say this about, but King is an auto-buy author for me. Is it a 50 page essay on how to watch paint dry? If she wrote it, I’ll buy it.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, Ashley King, and City Owl Press for the opportunity to receive a digital ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and review!

I don't take this opportunity lightly, and as much as I would love to give every book I read a 5 star review, sometimes I just can't. I wanted to like this book - a HEA rom com featuring a tennis pro and a single parent with a charming 8 year old? I honestly didn't think it could possibly miss the mark for me.

Overall this book was fine, hence the 3 star review. There were things I disliked about it (I think King and I have different ideas of how "donned" should be used in a sentence, and most of the conversations between Simone and Alex didn't feel realistic and authentic to me), but there were also things I did like about it (the tennis aspect, the relationship Simone has with her sister, the found family Alex ended up with). They all kind of shook out in the wash and it ended up as a 3 star read for me.

While it was romantically a slow burn, it definitely wasn't in terms of the lust aspect. Other reviewers have mentioned how much they loved the tension between the characters,

I do genuinely think there are people out there who will love this book, I just didn't end up being one of them.

The Wilde Card is such a heartfelt and tender story. It’s a light & quick read book with a storyline & flow that didn’t feel stretched out.

Simone is a CEO, a mom, and a divorcee. She attends a Tennis event in Canada with her sister, Amalie. Wanting just one carefree night, she decides to have a one-night stand with Alex Wilde, a rising tennis player with a reputation. Fast forward a bit, Simone gets a job as an assistant coach for Tennis and Alex is her trainee, the absolute last person she’d expect.

Alex Wilde has got me on the hook the moment he started talking. English or French, that man has a way with words that will make you swoon every single time!

It’s in dual POV and the innuendos and banter between Alex & Simone were just too funny and adorable. This book checks off almost every single thing I want in a romcom: sport romance, witty characters, SPICE, mature & healthy relationships

Another delightful tennis romance from Ashley King! I adored Painting the Lines and was eagerly anticipating the second installment of the Ace of Hearts series. The follow-up does not disappoint, bringing to the table sparkling writing, lovable characters, steamy and sweet romance, and just enough tension to keep things interesting. Simone and Alex's story is sure to delight both fans of sports romance and anyone looking for a heartfelt, sexy read set in a high-stakes world.

Thank you to @ashleyrkingwrites for the eARC copy of The Wilde Card

The Wilde Card is a different read to what I've been reading the last month and it is a nice welcome change.

It is based on Simone a 37 year old divorcee, who has a narcissist for an ex husband and a child to look after. Fed up in her big corporate job she decides a change must happen and turns to tennis coaching.
Things take an interesting turn when it turns out that her player she'll coach is none other than Alex Wilde - A hot single French tennis player, down on his game.

I loved the story of The Wilde Card, it's relatable in the respect of the single mother and having to deal with the narcissist ex, It's almost fairytale-ish with the happily ever after aspect.
The writing was good and descriptive and there's some French words too!
Each character brought the novel to life, I felt like it could have really played out in real life - it didn't seem exaggerated for a fiction novel but it still worked.

I'm a big fan of Ashley R King and really enjoyed The Wilde Card.
I look forward to reading more of her work

Thank you to NetGalley, City Owl Press, and the author for the opportunity to read an ARC of this title. An honest review was requested but not required.

I was pretty excited to read this because I love sports romance (tennis was a bonus, since sports romances are so often football or hockey), I love a May/December story, and the overall description was very appealing.

Despite a HOT start, this book just kind of fizzled out for me. Simone and Alex’s initial attraction and night together was really steamy and cute. I had high hopes. But once Alex moved to Atlanta, I just didn’t feel that spark anymore. Simone and Alex had ALL the reasons to stay separate: Simone had literally dumped her previous career to be a… coach, despite a total lack of actual qualifications. All she had was her reputation. Paul was right, a relationship with Alex was the height of unprofessionalism and irresponsibility. If Alex had TRULY valued her, he should have kept his distance, and so should Simone. And yet they literally gave in to temptation at every meeting.

On the other hand, Alex truly needed two people, it seemed: a coach, and a sports psychologist. Simone was qualified for neither, and Julian and Paul should never as tennis center owners have endorsed her for those roles. Frankly, I could not mentally overcome those issues which prevented me from fully enjoying Simone and Alex’s love story.

Character-wise: Alex, despite his so-called “reputation”, was a giant cinnamon roll. Simone was sort of flat; I had high hopes that she would deal more definitively with Damien (the ex) but each encounter she had with him, she came across as weaker than I had perceived her to be. I guess Alex and Simone both needed lessons on how to stand up to their respective bullies. Arlo and Rhys seemed like an exciting matchup (and my guess would be, they will feature in the author’s next book). Lula, the “8” (more like, 12) year old daughter was cute and precocious but I have an 8 year old, and I definitely thought Lula read like a much more emotionally/mentally mature child than her given age. I did get some laughs from the oblivious Paul, especially during that cab ride in Cincinnati.

This was a cute book, and the beginning showed a lot of promise. Tennis romances are thin on the ground so I was really disappointed that I didn’t like it as much as I’d hoped. I’m sure this book would appeal to a lot of people, but sadly it didn’t do it for me. 😕

The 👏🏼 vibes 👏🏼 were 👏🏼 fantastic 👏🏼

Did you know it was possible to swoon for an entire book? I didn't either until I finished The Wilde Card a few minutes ago and realized that not once did the cheesy-ass grin get wiped off my face because Alex Wilde was just that damn good. There were tears leaking out of my eyes at one point and my dumb ass was still smiling.

To say I adored this book and these characters would be an understatement, but honestly, I truly truly did. Adored them. So wholly and completely loved them and this story to their core. And the fact that I even got more time with Julian?! I just ... what more could you ask for?

The Wilde Card gives you:
a 37-year-old heroine ✔️
a pro-athlete cinnamon roll stud hero ✔️
TENNIS ✔️
favorite characters from PTL ✔️
joy and happiness and feelings ✔️
supercharged tension x10894031 ✔️

Look, did I want more of Alex and Lula together (or more or Lula in general)? Duh. Do I think Lula acted slightly older than 8? Sure. Did I want slightly more satisfying resolution with Damian? Obviously. But none of this dampened how I felt when I closed my kindle so I am sticking with my gut and saying this was absolutely wonderful and fantastic and I didn't know Ashley could top PTL but I know better than to doubt her and I am so so happy. Simone made me so so happy, Alex made me so so happy, Julian always makes me so so happy, and I just, I had so much fun. I loved it. I can't wait to read it again.

I also read every line that came out of Alex's mouth in a French accent in case anyone was curious. (I know you weren't but whatever).

I love this book.

Synopsis: Thirty-seven year old Simone Warner is juggling a lot. As the CEO of Warner Hotels and newly single mom she needs a night off. She meets Alex Wilde, an infamous tennis player eight years younger than her and they spend a wonderful night together. Entering a new phase in her life, Simone steps down as CEO and becomes a coach at her friend’s tennis center where her new student has no other than Alex “The Wild Card” Wilde, who has a grudge against his step-brother. Will they be willing to risk ruining their reputations for another night together or will they focus on Alex’s endeavor to win and Simones crazy ex?

As a tennis player and lover of age gap romances I was super intrigued with this concept.

This book seemed to drag on a while. I never really got super invested into the plot. The romance seemed to just pop up in random places that it didn’t necessarily fit. I believe the book would have been much better in first person but they may just be personal preference. There were some lines that only would have been made if the book had been in first person. As a tennis player I was disappointed with the lack of actual tennis practicing, it is not as easy as the coach telling you what to do and you immediately get it. I wish there was more accurate and descriptive tennis playing and talk. I feel like the conflict was never really resolved, it just kind of fizzled out. This may be because the climax was at 80%. This made it a struggle to stay interested. The romance, tension and one liners were good though and that’s what I need from a romance novel.

to celebrate the lovely fact that it is valentine's day, here is a absolutely fantastic romantic comedy review

thank you netgalley and city owl press for the chance to read this in exchange for and honest review

The Wilde Card by Ashley R. King most definitely swept my off my feet!

Star Rating- 4.5/5 stars

Characters- I loved the development of Simone throughout and how confident she got by the end, she's most definitely a badass women who can stand up for herself. Alex was the most cinnamon roll i think a cinnamon roll can get, he was so sweet and so thoughtful and i loved him. Also honorable mention Simone's child, Lula, was by far on my favorite characters, and we share a cereal obsession :)

Plot- Let me tell you, this started out hot, and spicy, i do think it dragged a bit in the middle but other than that, the ending was perfect 👌
(also sports romance! that's not football!)

What I liked- I loved the Dual POV, it really tied the characters together i think, and it something i love to see. I also loved the dynamic between Simone and Alex, and the small bickering, it was fun and light.

What i didn't like- I wasn't the biggest fan of the age gap, but it was okay enough that i didn't mind too much.

Overall Ashley R King writes a fantastic romance that's a part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone, and that really makes you happy.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

So I fully went into this book not knowing it was book 2 until I looked up the author, so thankfully the crossover isn't so major that it confused everything and anything from book one was loosely explained again. This book was so cute and not usually my kind of read, and I also know nothing about tennis so it says a lot that I enjoyed it! I love a good female character that can completely reinvent herself successfully all while finding love and raising a child. Simone was such a strong character and though her and Alex did exchange a few cringy lines, their romance was so sweet. Alex the playboy tennis player going through a rut and Simone the CEO turned tennis coach, what more could you ask for in a forbidden romance between player and coach. A very enjoyable read and Lula was definitely my favorite character, adding the comical relief as well as being the wing-daughter everyone needed in this story. Even if you know nothing about tennis, this was a super cute read and I can recommend it with or without reading book one!

OMG.

Ashley R King gets better with each book!!!! I loved Painting the Lines. I adored Forever After (different series).

I. Am. OBSESSED. With The Wilde Card.

This book begins HOT HOT HOT and Alex and Simone’s chemistry leaps off the page. But then, it dives in deep. I loved how with the coach/player dynamic, the characters were forced to focus on not just their chemistry, but their friendship too and you could see how sexy they were together, but also how sweet and genuine they were.

I loved Simone’s journey of giving her life a second chance, putting herself first, and starting new after her divorce and quitting her big CEO career.

King delivers a spicy but at the same time sweet sports romance that will make fans of tennis and (those of us like me) who know nothing about the sport will want to pick up their rackets and find a hot player of their own! She balances the two characters personal journeys, the sweetness of falling in love, and the spicy desire of a new relationship perfectly.

Simone Warner is a mom, a perfectionist, and former CEO. She’s spent her life living up to the expectations of others—which is why she decides to have a one-night stand with a gorgeous tennis player eight years her junior.

Later, Simone agrees to help notorious tennis player Julian Smoke coach a new top-secret player. What she doesn’t expect is for her steamy one-night stand to waltz through the doors with a smirk on his face and a racket.

Alex Wilde can’t seem to get a handle on his game. Obsessed with besting his vile tennis star step-brother, he turns to Julian Smoke and his training center for help. Simone Warner is his new assistant coach…and his only hope at getting back into the game. The problem? Alex can’t stop thinking about the woman who holds his future in her hands.

Both of them have a lot to overcome. They are so good for each other. Lots of chemistry and they complement each other so well. I don't think that it's a spoiler to say how much I love the ending. It's a rom-com... You are supposed to expect a HEA! :)

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This was a great book! Simone and Alex immediately got me hooked and rooting for their HEA. I loved Simone's character arc while she also navigated post-divorce life and motherhood and a major career change. She really grew throughout the book. It was great to see. Alex come into his own as well- he not only worked to turn his tennis game around, but his whole image and also goals and outlooks. The way he treated both Simone and her daughter, Lula, was wonderful. He was so caring and sweet.
Overall this book had a good mix of sweet/ funny and steamy scenes. Also, I felt the balance between tennis and non-tennis related story was well done. Sometimes sports romances get too bogged down in the details of whichever sport and it detracts from the love story- thankfully The Wilde Card did not have that issue!
This book was fairly low-angst. At times it got a bit confusing about can they be together? Are they not? which is why I didn't rate it 5 stars. However, reading this definitely makes me want to look up book 1 in the series and just find more by Ashley R. King. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys sports romances and/or age gap romances.

I was really hoping for something better for the second book in this series. I loved the first one, and this one started strong, but somewhere in the middle it fizzled out. Alex was effortlessly sweet and gone for our heroine, Simone, and that might have been the problem? That works for part of a book, but maybe not the whole book? I can’t quite put my finger on it. I liked the individual arcs that Alex and Simone had, as they learned how to be their authentic selves, silence their inner critics and work the way they want to. They were super sweet together, and the little teases of forbidden romance when they couldn’t be together because she became his coach had a lot of potential, but they didn’t keep any sort of narrative tension around it. I really like single parent romance, and mostly liked Simone’s 8 year old daughter, but as someone who spends a lot of time with a precocious 8 year old, she should have been at least 10 based on her dialogue and reactions. An unfortunately lackluster read for me.

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley and City Owl Press. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is one of those books that make you realize why sport romance is supremacy. This book was just everything I want in a romance novel.

Tropes I loved:
✨Forbidden romance
✨Sport- Tennis playing
✨Single-parent
✨Cinnamon roll of a guy
✨Angst and tension x100

Unfortunately I haven’t read book one, but after this book I definitely will. This book had me swooning, laughing my face off at the situations Alex and Simone got themselves in. Just to add on how much your toes will curl, Alex throws in French in his conversations, and damn that got my heart throbbing. This was just so cute. It was so well balanced and never felt over the top, but so natural and light-hearted. This was an absolute treat to read. 100% recommended.

Also- that title- immaculate! All the damn stars.

I am such a sucker for sports romances, and this delivered on everything that I love about them! Athlete going through a rough time in his career? Check. Hot single mom taking the world by storm? Check. Just the right amount of detailed spicy scenes? Check.

In all seriousness, this was a super fun read that helped me push through some nervous anxiety I had about an upcoming job interview. Like other reviews have mentioned, there were times when the dialogue seemed a little off, but it wasn't enough to turn me away. The conflict was also resolved a little too quick and easily for my angst with a happy ending-loving heart, but I'm already planning to pick up a physical copy of this to add to my bookshelf!

This is the first book I have read by Ashley but it absolutely will not be my last . I can say with certainty that I am now a huge fan .when I first signed up for a arc of this cute sexy and fun book it was mostly because I thought the cover was super cute and the Blurb caught my attention. So I did go into the story with a pretty open mind and no expectations. What I was not prepared for was how quickly I was going to fall in love with the characters of how completely invested I would become in the story . What a emotional rollercoaster ride . It’s angsty and steamy and emotional, you will laugh , you will cry and will will find yourself rooting for Simone and Julian to get their happy ending

Painting the lines was an incredible debut and we all know by now I was and still am a huge fan of that book, but the Wilde Card just took the ace of hearts series to a whole new level! The steam is off the charts, the romance is swoon worthy, the comedy is top notch belly laugh stuff, and we definitely have a new romcom Queen in the mix with Ashley. This book had me laughing so hard I cried within the first chapter!

This book can be read as a stand-alone but I love both books so I’m going to recommend both!

I received this book in exchange of honest review all thoughts are my own.

This such a cute HEA book! The characters are so lovable and the banters so fun! I love the fact that it focuses on the two main characters at turning points in their lives.

Simone, a woman in her late 30's that didn't even know who she was anymore. Someone that has ALWAYS done what was expected. Someone who has lived her life up to the expectations and needs of others, never her own.

Alex, the "bad" boy that hid who he was because of his past. The one with no family. The one his father forgot. The one that was tormented by his step-brother.

They both found each other at a pivotal moment in their lives. It was really heartwarming to feel the change that they both had to find in themselves, as individuals, before they could build that foundation as a couple.

Newly divorced mom, Simone gets a night she will never forget and that will change her life forever... oh my gosh, this was so much fun.
I love tennis so as soon as I read the description of this I knew I had to read it and oh my... it was fantastic!
This was steamy and fast paced but also so cute (with the bits between Alex and Lula!) And so sweet!
I really liked this one and now I'm definitely looking forward to read more of this author.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
