This is an excellent deep-dive into the mythical “Spanish-American” identity that my family from the rural villages of Northern New México has clung to for generations. I enjoyed learning the complexities that existed and continue to exist concerning language, blood, and power. As a Nuevomexicano, I’m thankful that Mr. Nieto-Phillips took the time to write this important piece of literature. Viva Nuevo Mexico!
Nieto-Phillips argument becomes stale after the third chapter. You can tell this was a dissertation that was made into a book based the author trying to stretch to find arguments that are clearly not defined after Chapter three.
