本书通过对于李卓吾和阳明学的阐释，对于中国前近代不同于西方的路向进行了辨析，认为“在中国思想中存在着不同于欧洲思想史的展开的中国独自的思想史的展开”，反对一般常见的、以欧洲的历史展开和价值观为基准的西方中心论历史观，从而在中国内在的思想理路中寻找中国的“近代”及其“屈折与发展”；他还打破了在日本通行的对于李卓吾童心说是个人主义表现的肤浅说法，把李卓吾晚期的复杂思想，特别是佛教思想在他身上的独特体现推向对于明代思想本身的解释。
