In a powerful argument for free market environmentalism, Terry Anderson and Laura Huggins break down liberal and conservative stereotypes of what it means to be an environmentalist. They show that, by forming local coalitions around market principles, stereotypes are replaced by pragmatic solutions that improve environmental quality without necessarily increasing red tape.
The key to environmental stewardship is ownership, not regulation. Basically, tree owners are tree huggers. Greener Than Thou provides us with a support of free market environmentalism: an argument against stifling government regulation. The reality is that people will continue to degrade the environment for personal benefit as long as they have no incentive to be more eco-friendly. Free market environmentalism argues that the right mix of private property rights and incentives to use that property in an environmentally friendly way is a much better way to help our environ than imposing top down regulatory policies. People are creative AND self-interested. If you can give them an incentive to channel their creativity and self interest into being more "green," then everyone wins.
I really liked this book. It's a quick read, entertaining, and will get you thinking about how to do what's right for ourselves and our planet, without getting rid of all our cars and factories.
