A love without dimension...

After a devastating car crash leaves him in a coma for nearly two months, seventeen-year-old David Abbott finally awakens one night in a hospital. Miraculously, he seems to have made a near-complete recovery, except in one crucial area: his memory. Nothing about his life, from his hometown to his own parents, seems familiar.

Desperate to fill this void, David visits the scene of his accident. Instead of answers, he finds a young girl, near dead and alone in the woods. The mystery around his own memories only deepens when she awakens and makes a series of unbelievable claims-including that she has been searching for him across time and space.

David dismisses her stories as crazed fever dreams at first. But the more time he spends with this enigmatic yet enchanting stranger, the more he starts to question his so-called reality. If what he feels for her is real, could her fantastical vision of their alternate life together be real as well?

Thank you so much to Patrick Morgan for providing me with a copy of his book in exchange for this honest review.

Realms is a sort of science fiction romance with a couple supernatural elements thrown in. The otherworldly parts are fairly subtle so don't worry this isn't hard sci fi or fantasy, more of just a sweet romance between two young adults.

Realms starts very slowly with a vague dream. David wakes up in a hospital room but has no memory of who he is or how he got there. The first third or so of the book follows as David attempts to reconnect with the family and life he is told is his. But he has no attachment to these people calling themselves his mom and dad or any of the things he's told he used to love.

He's feeling very lost and out of sorts when he has a strong urge to visit the site of the car accident that put him in the coma he woke up from. Upon visiting the site he happens upon a young woman about his age, nearly dead on the ground off the side of the road.

This is when the book starts to get interesting, it's unfortunate that it took 100 pages to get there. I understand that it is necessary to establish how uncomfortable David is in this body and this life but it honestly felt way too slow of a pace for my tastes.

He feels a connection to this girl but doesn't understand why. His parents don't remember her, they didn't go to the same school, and her parents are highly antagonistic towards him. But they are drawn to each other in ways that only make sense when you really trust your gut and your heart over your brain.

The rest of Realms deals with David trying to determine if this girl is telling the truth about her traveling across dimensions to find him. How they are already married in another realm and how they have to get back there. Is she crazy or are his feelings telling him the truth?

I must not be a very romantic person at heart because I really think that I wouldn't trust my gut on this one. My brain would talk me out of it no matter what my feelings said. It was hard for me to root for a romance that is so uncertain. It was also hard for me to care about David as a character since he's basically a blank slate. He has no memories and no personality, it's hard to find him relatable.

I honestly kept wondering if Realms would be better if it was told from the girl's, Kirsa's, perspective instead. I think following her through the dimensions and her quest to locate her lost husband would be more interesting to me than reading about how David doesn't really like mashed potatoes anymore.

However, if we were to follow Kirsa through her journey we would know she's telling the truth. Their love would not require a leap of faith on their behalf or the behalf of the readers. This book requires faith that I think I just don't have. It's not in my nature. But if you are the kind of reader who loves big romantic gestures and diving head first into a chance then you might find Realms to be a lovely story of two people finding each other against all odds.

I recommend this book to those readers. Please let me know how the other side finds this book.

I was thrilled when Patrick Morgan reached out to ask if I would review his sophomore novel. I thoroughly enjoyed his previous one, Apparent Horizon, although it didn’t necessarily line up with my worldview very well. Luckily, I felt Realms was fundamentally much more accessible to the average reader. It was heartfelt and genuine, even while having some more fantastical elements.

David awakes after spending two months in a coma. The doctors think it’s a miracle. Yet it isn’t all happy news; as hard as he tries, he cannot remember a single thing about his previous life. Things just get stranger when he finds himself inexplicably drawn to a girl who claims to know him and has some impossible beliefs.

Easily my favourite aspect of this book is Morgan’s writing style. It’s very introspective, and leads to a slow-burn when it comes to pacing, yet contributes to his relatable characters. As I often say, dialogue can make or break a book, and it was excellent here. It caused each character to come across as unique, and contributed to a ‘showing’ not ‘telling’ atmosphere.

There was a small but well developed cast of characters, giving the book even more of an intimate feel. Each one got enough time to feel developed, and many of them felt like they changed throughout the course of the novel. Although none more than David, since at its heart, this is a story about his personal development. I found it easy to connect with him simply because we get so much time inside his head, even if, looking back on it, he isn’t the most novel character.

I can’t say much about the plot, as it takes a while to come into its own, other than it was an interesting concept. It was a different take on a very common sci-fi trope that I thought worked quite well. Similarly, it had a different look at the instant love trope that often plagues romances, that impressed me quite a bit. However, there were some places where it felt like there was a disregard for some of the characters' lives, which was hard to reconcile with the empathetic view I had of most of the characters.

Overall, I thought this book was great. I think it’s probably the perfect fit for me, in terms of how it is written. However, it did have the couple of issues I mentioned above, as well as Morgan walking a fine line between very introspective and the pacing being too slow in places. Therefore, I’d rate it 5.5 out of 7. I’d highly recommend it if you are looking for something quite intimate, where the characters feel strongly. I would say it’s also hard to pin it down to one genre, so if transcending the regular genre boundaries is your thing, you might like this.

Many thanks to Patrick Morgan for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

"Across stars and moons and galaxies, through time and space, light and dark and everything in between, I scoured infinite realms of the universe until finally, I found you here."

Daniel … I mean David Abbot wakes up after a two month coma to realize he's lost in a world he doesn't recognize, in a body he doesn't recognize. After visiting the site of the accident with high hopes of it bringing any memories back, he encounters this young girl by the water and as soon as she opens her eyes, David's feeble reality becomes shattered once again to ironically gain a new sense of unexplainable connection to this girl. David must now make a tough choice to either believe this girl's claims or continue to figure out his unfamiliar reality.

Morgan does an excellent job at taking the reader by the hand and making them go through the roller coaster of emotions that David, the MC goes through. You feel confused, scared, desperate, hopeful, suspicious, heartbroken. This story is about trusting your gut and taking the leap of faith into what you know what's right in your heart, and most of all: About love conquering all. Realms is a romantic journey from start to finish that doesn't disappoint and will probably make you shed some tears. I know I did.

And on to one of my favorite quotes in the book:
"From the very beginning, she represented a magnificent paradox: a soulmate wrapped inside a stranger."

Realms is a psychological fiction novel by Patrick Morgan.
Initially when I started reading the book, I was annoyed with the writing style since it was very descriptive and that's not something I usually go for because I am like my writing to be a little bit more respect to the point. However as the story continued I understood why the author decided to to be so descriptive in his writing and the context in which it is written gives it a very unique feel. This book definitely took me by surprise as it's something a lot more different than what we usually read. It is is a romance and psychological thriller but the way the story is told about the characters is marvelously genius as it takes a whole new perspective. Add that to the twists and turns and you can see the creativity just oozing out.
We learn about David's character with David through what he learns from the people around him and his dreams. They feel so real, and that was the moment where I understood why the writing style was so descriptive because it felt like the dreams are happening around you and are present there with him as he experiences it, no matter how emotional it was.
Overall, very impressed with this book which I finished in one sitting. It's a quick and effortless but page turning read.

This book in 3 words: Different. Alluring. Exceptional.

Realms is my third book by Patrick Morgan and, it's clear, this author is underrated. I can't believe there's not more buzz about his books. No need to fear, the Realms hype girl is here! Swipe for the synopsis. 👆🏼

This writing is great with strong pacing, structure, and descriptions that mesmerize and transport you at the same time. The opening pages are sticky with feeling and heavy with atmospheric energy. One of the strongest introductions I've read in a long while. The writing excels all the way to the end... right up until you realize you're holding your breath during the last few pages. 👏🏻

Realms has a toe in quite a few genres... romance, sci-fi, mystery, YA, adventure, realistic fiction (and I could go on and on). I love how this story feels like it could be for such a diverse group of readers. ONE OF MY FAVE READS THIS YEAR!♥️

A delightfully unique love story and view of soulmates. This is exactly the type of book (and author) I hoped to find when I started this account. It's fun to rave about the authors everyone knows about BUT WHAT ABOUT ALL OF THE HIDDEN GEMS? Patrick Morgan is one of those gems. ✨👏🏻

Here's one of the most beautiful lines from Realms. "Across stars and moons and galaxies, through time and space, light and dark and everything in between, I scoured infinite realms of the universe until finally, I found you here."

You know when you’re wearing your favorite cozy sweater, snuggled up under a blanket, with a candle going and a hot mug in your hand, and it’s gloomy and rainy outside, and you just want to read the perfect book to fit that mood? Well this is that book.

I have never read a book like REALMS. Ever. It’s so different from the books I tend to gravitate towards, and I am extra grateful for this story that made me think and question what I believe. Like—

Do I believe in soulmates?
Do I believe in the string theory?
Do I believe in love that transcends time and space?

To be completely honest, I am not quite sure how to review this book without giving spoilers or details that would detract from the plot. Teenager David wakes up from a coma and doesn’t remember anything about his life, until he meets Jessica, a girl he finds unconscious in the woods. What follows is an unconventional story about love between two people who find each other again and again.

The descriptive imagery the author uses is so vivid, it almost reads like stream of consciousness. As a reader, you are so inside the main character David’s head that it becomes almost a visceral experience.

Read this book!!!!!

“Across stars and moons and galaxies, through time and space, light and dark and everything in between, I scoured the infinite realms of the universe until finally, I found you here.” ❤️

One of my favorite things about Bookstagram has been discovering books and new authors that I probably normally wouldn’t have known about. In this case, it’s Realms by Patrick Morgan. It’s unlike anything I have read before and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. On one hand, I couldn’t wait to get to the end to discover how it all fit together, but at the same time, I didn’t want it to end. Each chapter ended in a way that I just couldn’t put it down because I had to know what came next. I loved the writing, I loved the story, and I genuinely cared about the characters. I was hooked from the beginning, and I think you will be, too.

I still have things I want to know about that ending, but I loved it.

“Realms” introduces David Abbott, a seventeen year old waking up from a coma after a terrible accident. He’s made an amazing physical recovery but his memory is completely vacant. He doesn’t remember his old life, his parents, or even his own name.

Overall, I enjoyed this tale of lost love. The two main characters are well developed and believable. Their emotional arcs were clear and easy to connect to. It did not take long to become invested in their plight. I also found the way the author described David’s awakening from his coma to be intriguing. However, there was sometimes so much intensity behind the introspection and emotion between the two main characters that the story seemed to slow down. One of the sweeter, feel-good, books I have read. How far would you travel to bring the love of your life home again? You can tell the author has a profound pure love for his parents and the story well encapsulates this feeling. It’s a love story so sugar sweet and refreshingly descriptive of every detail going through the main character’s mind while the story unfolds. I have to admit it was a new one for me reading a teenager-perspective! There are SO many beautiful lines in this book I had to highlight my favorites to return to. Well done Patrick Morgan. (My wish is for all to find a love like Kirsa and Daniel in this lifetime). So cute!

Realms is a beautiful and romantic journey that I could not get enough of! The author does a fantastic job of combining breathtaking imagery and incredible detail that gives us a deep longing to be a part of the worlds he creates. This book flows with eas, but still is able to maintain the element of a mystery. A deeply gorgeous story with one of the most satisfying and emotional endings I have ever read! It is truly devastating, soulful, and suspenseful. I highly recommend this read to any and all books lovers!

One of the hardest things to do as a storyteller is construct something that feels both fresh and familiar at the same time, but Patrick Morgan has found a way to do just that with Realms. This was a fun and fast read that kept me guessing how the story would end up until the climactic chapters. I really enjoyed it and look forward to his next book.

A mesmerizing novel that compels the reader forward with each chapter. The descriptions and imagery of his surroundings and emotions are exemplary of this author. It comes full circle as the characters attempt to grasp their divergence in time and space. A must-read mystery and love story combined into one that transcends beyond “realms”.

Realms is thought-provoking and written in beautifully intricate detail...seriously, the vivid imagery is executed so well. While it is not my typical genre, I was thoroughly invested in the MC's life from the first page and found myself rooting for him while questioning everything.

Gave me some serious DARK and INCEPTION vibes at times. A solid read from Patrick Morgan.

Seventeen-year-old David Abbott wakes up with amnesia after being in a coma for several weeks following a car accident. His relieved parents attempt to jog his memory, but nothing feels familiar to him.

One day, David convinces his mom to drive him out to the scene of the accident. There, he finds a teenage girl unconscious in the woods. When she awakens, she is hysterical to see him and calls him Daniel. The more he interacts with her, the more she shares her belief that he is not who they say he is. In fact, the two of them are in the wrong bodies and have to find a way to get back home.

Realms is a novel that I’d recommend to those who gravitate towards love stories with a little paranormal, sci-fi element sprinkled in and who prefer more thoughtful, character-driven rather than plot-driven books. It tends to get bogged down in its narration and wraps up a bit abruptly but isn't overly complicated and explores interesting ideas about unconsciousness, love, and identity.
