As Clan Wolf launches a daring campaign of reprisal against The Republic, three warriors will find their destinies intertwined on the field of battle, and in the fight for their futures...
Alaric is a living legend among the Wolves: fearless, ruthless, merciless. But his own lust for victory may mean his undoing, unless he learns to see beyond himself - and recognize what a true warrior fights for.
Anastasia is a former Clan Wolf warrior, now leading a band of mercs against her onetime comrades. She knows that to lead, she must prove not only her ability but her complete separation from the Wolves. And there is only one way for her to do so - in combat.
Verena is the new commander of a ragtag merc force. Her desire for greatness will uncover her own superior abilities and draw her ever closer to a final confrontation in which mercy is unheard-of - and only death awaits the unworthy...
This is the twenty fifth book in the Mech Warrior Dark Age series. This series is a continuation of the Battletech series. The books in this series, like the books in the original Battletech series, are by various authors. This one is by Michael A. Stackpole. The Republic of the Sphere has known a long period of peace and prosperity. Then the interstellar communications network a.k.a. the HPG net is destroyed by terrorists and many planets in the Republic find themselves cut off from the rest of the galaxy with communications taking weeks or even months. Unrest leads to several factions on several planets trying to overthrow the local governments and seize power for themselves. In this one Clan Wolf launches a campaign to make the Republic think they are trying to take control of Terra(Earth). In fact it is an elaborate ruse to cover the move of the entire Wolf Clan to the Lyran Commonwealth. Opposing them will be former Clan Wolf warrior, Anastasia Kerensky, and her Wolf Hunters and also Verena, leader of the mercenary Dijinns. They will face Alaric Wolf and others of Clan Wolf for a winner take all battle in the former IX Prefecture. This is another great book in this series.
Michael Stackpole has been writing great works for decades. The first works were for a role playing game called Tunnels and Trolls. Every solo dungeon Michael wrote was fantastic. I own them all. I am happy that Michael is writing books about another one of my favourite games. I really enjoyed this book. Character development was fantastic. You really get to see how the characters evolve and change, over come their insecurities, and become better leaders. The story is extremely well written with interesting twists. It definitely leaves room for a sequel, but also ends well. I am looking forward to reading more work from Michael Stackpole.
One of the last good ORIGIONAL Mechwarrior writers
Another great novel as expected. Its unfortunate the "new" authors don't understand or figure out how to write good Mechwarrior lore. Twists and turns but always battle. Its what those of us who have been followers since the 1990's expect.
The first 2 chapters of this book were painful to read. I almost gave up on the book but stuck with it. The story really started going in Chapter 3 and the rest of the book was fine after that.
Great read ,great story about the rise of Alaric ,Verena and there nemesis Anastasia Kerensky . I look forward to more books in this New Dark Age / ilclan era.
Obviously part of the overall history in the Mechwarrior universe, I picked this up simply because it was a Michael Stackpole book. I did enjoy it, but nowhere near as much as some of his other books in the series. Worth reading, but probably only if you're reading the entire series.
