I really must read more stuff written or edited Ivan Roots. The original edition was published in 1981 so the ideas expressed in it have long passed into the history of the history of the civil wars and interregnum, but even now the powerful cases each essay presents still ring true, and hold true.

In particular it defends Cromwell against Hugh Trevor-Roper’s attack on him as incompetent parliamentarian unable to understand how parliaments worked, or to get them to work for him. Peter Gaunt pres
