I'm currently teaching this book which has just been updated here in KISH LANGUAGE SCHOOL; quite incessantly the book provides a load of grammar exercises which is out of the patience of either the leaners or the teacher,... the book has got a very intense syllabus on the slangs and phrasal verbs and teaches the British culture quite well ,as HEADWAY did!
After so many years of teaching I've come across the idea that a learner should not produce the target language like a zombie , the spirit of a language comes through the correct intonation and pronunciation ....speech and the value of it should be taught as we teach it to our children when they're learning their mother tongue , if TOTAL ENGLISH emphasises on the use of correct stressed patterns , I do agree with it ! ... Well it should be English and beautiful English and not the one which is just acceptable in the communicative method! What the book has accomplished is teaching the natural and native-like English!
After all ,the subjects are quite interesting and new,...fresh ideas really.... though I wonder why it sometimes examplifies quite a peculiar life style , most of my students really freaked out when they read a text like "Jungle Bug" or the one on page 48,....!
